birdsong engine room in rehearsal

A full run-through of Andy Narell's "The Last Word" by the birdsong Steel Orchestra for Panorama 2013 with KJ Marcelle on drumset. This is a pre-preliminaries rehearsal, still fairly early in the process, with a few players (most notably congas) missing along with a few errors sprinkled-in as players are still learning their parts.

Drumming in a steelband is in a class by itself and KJ is showing what it's all about. And seeing the scratcher man come dancing by at 4:16 into the video is priceless.

It's FUNKY LIKE A TRAIN!! Many assume that any world renowned drummer can play "Calypso Rhythm" with ease, not knowing the complexities involved, eg. the special connection between he and the conga man. It is far easier for a Steelband drummer to play in a reggae band than the reverse...
