    in 1897 Mark Twain wrote, “Benares is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together.” Varanasi is a Must, still. Another quote, by an unknown author: "After one week in Varanasi I thought, they were all crazy over here, - after 3 months I thought: the people in V. are the only sane people on earth. Very nice video!!

      Varanasi or Kashi is a very old city, partially destroyed by invaders and then again rebuilt. It is called the eternal city. The Shiva temple has the jyotirlingam. A lingam (linam + gamayati) means symbol or form. If one is receptive, it can activate one's spiritual process. Understand that although Hinduism first understood spirituality, it is not that spirituality is for Hindus only. It is for humankind. One's body is accumulation of food and one's mind is accumulation of ideas and impressions formed by the data collected by sense organs or extensions thereof (gadgets). But is that all or are we beyond our body and mind? Today quantum physics also thinks that all are not real and are just our interpretation and this world. as it appears is created by our collective consciousness. To understand that just not by inference like the scientists, but to know that in one's experiential level is spirituality. Also, in the place where you had your thali, there was a picture of goddess Kali with Shiva at her feet. The word "Kali" comes from "Kaala" meaning time. Time as we know destroys all. Our ego is too small infront of time. But Shiva depicts "Kaleswara" or dimension beyond time as we understand. All our physical activity is bound in the space-time dimension. Since Shiva depicts a dimension beyond that, he is shown sleeping (no physical activity). When Kali "touches" him, she stops, because time can travel only that far and no further. The liberation is not just because of Ganges. Varanasi has been thronged for thousands of years by yogis and enlightened beings. It is said that their effect on the soul departing from the physical body helps in liberation. So, people come there to die.

      A' Maze to travel to and spend time in India is a dream I’ve had and will one day be able to do. Learning about and experiencing other cultures around the world helps us cultivate empathy for others and if we all did so, I truly believe there would be no more hatred or wars. Namaste, my friend. 🙏🏼❤️

    • @JohnSmith-qf7yz
      @JohnSmith-qf7yz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly...it's raw coz spirituality has never been a commandments-for-masses thing here, it has always been a decentralised practice with all sort of school of thoughts. For eg you find everything from polytheism to monotheism to pantheism to animism to even atheism in Hinduism and all of them survived to this day. However, too much decentralisation sometimes makes it difficult for people to walk on spiritual path for eg that sage in the video who was smoking- that's corruption and lack of self-restraint.

    • @pbjsilverstudio4882
      @pbjsilverstudio4882 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Rajat Saini that is one of the key reasons I want to travel through India. The diversity of spiritual beliefs and practices makes India one of the most powerfully spiritual countries in the world. As a Buddhist, I believe we are each responsible or for our own spiritual path. Each of us has a personal journey through each life we live. How we live our life determines much of what will attach to us in a future life. We are born to be happy and to help others. That is my belief.

    Whenever we feel low or depressed we just go to ghats, sit there, watch the Ganga Arti and it feels like all the stress, worries have been heard by someone. It feels like yes everything would be fine.

    I live in Varanasi and this was by far the best video shot about Varanasi. Our Prime Minister has been elected from Varanasi and this is the reason for it be twice cleaner than what it was 10 years ago. I would suggest visitors to blindly follow the recommendations and reviews about Indian cities on tripadvisor as most of the content written by travelers there, is unbiased and authentic. Also, November-March are the best months to visit India.

    Well i am from varanasi( also known as Benaras/Kashi) and i have been there since my birth. The thing about benaras which you tried to show but you coudn't is that nobody can capture the feelings. What is special about benaras can only be felt, not captured. Its some spiritual energy & connection to the almighty and all the people, that you feel simultaneously one with all the beings. It overwhelms you. It always makes you wonder about life,death, afterlife, re-birth etc. Benaras can only be felt, it cant be captured or told. People must visit this place & try to stay for a week to get the vibe of energy and connection present there. There is a temple- Sankat Mochan Mandir. Visitors should go there & just sit there. Its always a magical experience. To all the people who plan to visit benaras/varanasi, i can only say that when you visit this place, try to see beyond materialistic things. You will have amazing experience.

Nowadays,A Hindu plans to have only one child and gives him/ her the best education possible ..whereas a Muslim doesn't even makes any plan ..because madarsachaap universities are there to help them out(...When a Muslim becomes a victim of mob lynching it becomes a headline if the same happens with a Hindu the reporters burry under the ground.. #Hindu_Tolerance

You mentioned near the end of the video that you weren't sure if you could convey through the camera what it feels like to be there in Varanasi but, I've got to say, I could certainly feel it. It's one of the few videos I've ever watched on TH-cam where the energy seems to radiate through the screen. Varanasi has been coming up in my periphery a lot lately and I think your video's a sign that I should go. Thank you, brother, for sharing your experience with us. Also I just love my varanasi bcz the aura and spirituality is unbelievable .

Next time you want to see the Ganga arti which you covered in the last part of the video, you can hire the boat just 30 to 45 mins before the Ganga arti starts and tell the boat man to take you to the front of the arti and stop your boat there. In this video you were on the back side of the arti. You will have to stay there till the end as there will be boats on all side soon since every one wants to cherish the view of Ganga Arti from the front. The boat guy will help you get an awesome view of the entire Ganga arti which will be just mesmerizing. You need to see it to believe it.

I've always been curious of India and all of its culture but I still kinda have this hesitation of going there, in case travels are allowed again, but hearing your unfiltered experiences gives a much clearer idea of how to travel the country. I find it so odd that so many westerners come to India and visit the various cities and sites, speak with people, hear the names of those places repeated to them over and over by the people who live there, the people who speak the languages the names arise from, those who know exactly how those names are pronounced, yet it never seems to sink in. It is as if the brains of westerners refuse to accept that the way they have always heard other westerners say the names are mispronunciations. Western brains refuse to accept that westerners can be wrong. They have this deep need to pronounce the names as they are written in English and pronounce them according to rules of English pronunciation, sometimes with a bit of French rules thrown in, just to make the words sound more "foreign", never mind that it is the wrong kind of "foreign".
    At 16:20 the young hand masseuse says the name of the city twice, just to make sure you hear how he pronounces it, correctly. Yet...here we are. The name Varanasi, which is spelled that way in English because some Englishman with limited understanding of Hindi wrote it down, sounding out his own private mispronunciation and passing it on to other English speakers who also didn't know Hindi. Varanasi is continuously pronounced incorrectly because the western mind and ego just can't accept the correct version as correct. Just like the word thali.
    I'm certain the waiter said the word correctly to you, yet it didn't take.
    By the way, the holy men are not wearing the color orange. It is saffron. Just like the top color on the tri-color Indian flag.
    Here is a bit of a hint on what that color in part symbolizes. The Hindi word is kesar ("kay/sir" means saffron. Keasri is like saying saffrony, or having an aspect of saffron):

      We really hope that Dan will disable you from commenting on his videos like we did with you on our channel. You are incredibly insensitive. We're pretty sure you can't pronounce all words in other languages perfectly. It's not possible when you have another tongue unless you live in a country for a long time. You're just one of them very bitter and angry human beings who gets off on criticising others, regardless of content. We really hope you can find peace within yourself one day and become a better human being. Shame on you! 🙏

      Chill out dude. We even mispronounce each other’s words and names. I’m sure the same is probably true within India. There are many languages and regions within India and I’m sure not all Indians pronounce everything the same...

      @@TimezoneJunkies, welp. It's been a year and he hasn't disabled me yet. He just might have realized that I was speaking the truth.
      Perhaps you can put your ego aside too and realize your own mistakes. Otherwise you are just another bully (or a pair of bullies), who recognizes that someone does not wish to be called by the wrong name, yet continues out of spite.
      There are no special muscles or bones required to pronounce words correctly. It is your own laziness and stubbornness that keeps you from learning. Be a better human being.
      Have you ever taken the time to recognize how much racism, hatred, larceny, and murderous rage it takes to dehumanize whole populations of other countries enough to colonize a country, drain it of its wealth for centuries, change the names of its major places to suit yourself, teach those improper names to your children, who then go on to flaunt that same unwillingness to learn simple correct pronunciations because it just takes too much work to honor the Natives?
      The shame belongs to you. Shame on you. Shame shame shame!

    Hi Dan! Thank you so much for filming india in such a beautiful way, thank you for seeing the positive energy even in the clutter. my parents and myself are native from Varanasi (i was born their) but moved to New Delhi for father's job and our schooling. But i myself have never fallen in love with Varanasi like this before. Kudos to your patience even in that chaos, since its very old city it wasnt planned and then built. Yes Ganga cleaning project has been taken very seriously by our current PM., In the end, I would like to invite you at my home for a lunch in New delhi, in case you happen to be here again. And yes, you have had a beautiful upbringing, only someone who is full of compassion and gratitude can see goodness in others! Keep up the good work! :) :) Love from India!

    Frankly speaking, people who live in cosmopolitan cities like Newyork, London, Tokyo etc, where everything goes within certain order may find uneasy to adjust with the chaos in varanasi. Not just varanasi but many Indian cities as well. As an Indian, I can't deny that. But trust me, if you stay around for a while, analyzing people and thoughts, you would certainly find a different sphere of life. Something, which would bring you more closer to yourself. And that is something which is amazing
