  • In this candid interview, veteran watch dealer Matthew Bain discusses how the watch industry and collecting has changed over the past 40 years. Matt shares many fascinating stories including the entrepreneurial way in which he started his career while at college in the 1980s, when he would enlist his friends to buy Swatch watches (purchases of which were limited per person at the time), that he would then sell to the Italians. Also inspired by his father who was a collector, Matt continued his passion buying and selling watches after college until one day someone offered him a Patek Philippe World Time ref. 2523 which he and his father purchased and the next day he left his job at a bank - and the rest is a fascinating history! Over the decades, Matt has brought and sold many important Patek Philippe watches, several of which can now be seen in the Patek Philippe Museum. Find out which vintage Patek Philippe watches Matt believes are undervalued and worth searching for by listening to this wide-ranging discussion with John Reardon.

I‘m so delighted by this interview. As a junior watch-dealer from Austria in the Nineties I went to the IWJG shows many times. Matt was one of my role models then and he still is. It is always a pleasure to meet him now and then, as he is such a great guy.

Oh man, when he said he’s a watch buyer but hates selling, that hit me to the core. Same, Matthew. Same.

To me the best episode for far, I had such a great time while learning a lot. M. Bain is so nice and humble I wish I could offer him a drink and have a chat, he totally deserves to have fans following him 😂😅

nkuwan You are so well-informed about luxury watches. You've obviously done your due diligence and the comparison to the US is very informative...because of course, I live in New York. thank you very much

Great interview John and Matt. Even though I have known Matt for decades, it was great to learn so much from his account of his origins and highlights of his magnificent career as a collector and dealer.

A few years ago, me being a big guy but I love smaller watches, I swore I would laugh at everyone and get the 5026 Patek series in 34mm, I never had enough money to get any. Those watches were between 8-10,000USD and now, they are sitting at the older retail prices for previous gen calatrava. Money aside, they are just so beautiful and still well valued relative to new Patek prices as well as the state of the market in general.

Hey guys, I just want to say something because of what Matthew said; The dealer culture today that has now been transparent on youtube where you see the conventions, it has put me off dealing with most people. I do not see any passion, just guys handling these items like they are commodities, which in some sense they are but they were made with thought, intent and skill. I am very disappointed with the modern dealers and their hustler approach to the whole thing, I hope one day to bring something different to the table.

It used to be a secret world, they opened the curtain for clicks and ruined any mystique the watch world had.

@@TheDryDown I am not a pretentious guy or at least I try not to be. So, I have no issues buying watches from a trade show, what I do not like is the way some of the watches are handled, like they do not mean anything and to be honest, it's just a hustle for many and this is the aspect I hate.
