This was awesome to see and makes me think about when I had my Great-grandfather's pocket watch fully serviced a few years ago. It was in rough shape and not working and it ended up costing more than the value of the watch itself, but it was worth it to know it might keep running for another 70 years. My Grandmother gave it to him as a gift when she got her first paycheck after turning 18 and he kept it in his front pocket until the day he died. It had the same level of wear and tear as this watch and I would have never considered getting it replated and covering up that history, just like you were saying. Thanks again for sharing this!

Mine is a similar story, as two years ago I had my grandfather's pocket watch serviced for more than its monetary value; although of course it has lots of sentimental value to me.

I just pulled my great-grandfathers pocket watch out of my safe and found out more about it. It's a Hamilton 912 made in 1933. It's Nickel with a gold chain and a knife fob. Still works. Had this watch for a few decades after my grandmother gave it to me but never thought much about it until I started watching your videos. It's not railroad quality nor is it very valuable, which isn't a big deal to me. Makes me want to start wearing waistcoats so I can wear it all the time. Thank you!

This is amazing- I bought a couple of early 1900s elgin pocket watches movements that are in remarkable shape. I bought the pocket wat movements because of your advice on your videos, and then I learned about how there are different sized pocket watches, and the ones I bought were size 0 LOL. So they aren't alexactly larger and easier to work on, but they are unique and I love them and have enjoyed troubleshooting the issues like a broken pallet fork jewel! Thanks for making the amazing videos and for getting me into a new hobby and obsession!

Great choice, I think I'll end up doing the same as soon as I've got some freetime; I've already have a "patient" it's a Waltham 8 days clock from the 40's but it's pretty much a big pocket watch with a quite strange setting crown, and it comes from an 1948 RCA transmission electron microscope which became mine after a lab couldn't keep it anymore and it was destined to landfill fortunately i saved it, it would've been a shame to lose that marvel of vacum tube electronics

Got a similar pocket watch Elgin 303 grade 7 jewels non-working off Ebay as my first foray into this hobby. I followed along the video to take it apart and put it back together. (don't have the cleaning stuff) At 16:04 gave it a test wind as well and the movement moved! YAY!! Then realized made the same mistake with the keyless and had to take it apart. The 303 (??) has a different keyless works. On the face there is a lever on the side for that curly spring. The pieces at the 18:00 mark was not present. This was really fun!!

The blue on the hands is a temper, or a heat treatment at low temps for longer duration. This temper follows an oil or water quench that hardens steel. The temper relaxes the steel giving pliability back to the steel, otherwise it could break like glass. The effect is beautiful I agree.

I collect and restore 19th century pocket watches. I use an old trick to clean porcelain/enamel dials by suspending the dial over a small container of distilled/processed water (paper clip on a peg wood stick). Drop in a common Polydent denture cleanse tablet and let sit overnight. You will be wonderfully surprised to see how clean and bright the dial has become! Hope this helps.

Fun fact, the reason soldiers started wearing watches upside down, that is the watch face on the same side of the arm as the palm of your hand was because as they were holding their rifle waiting to fire their weapon at an exact planned time, as they were holding their rifle in the firing position the watch face would be facing them so they could the exact minute or second to fire. Especially in WWII when they had center second hands.

I have an old joyas wrist watch and the spring would not wind up. I took it apart and spent ages trying to find where it, and other bits flew off to. I believe I also tried to unscrew the top but because it was threaded the other way I have probably stripped the thread. I know how to get the spring back in, but the wheels have got jumbled up. I did enjoy watching this and the Omega one. Excellent instructional video and camera work. I realized my tweezers are magnetic as well ! Thank you. I have a box of watches to practice on now.

There are ways of restoring metal without wearing it down or causing any damage to the metal, I forgot exactly how it's done but I think it involves a complicated electrical and chemical mixture with a metal coating in the water to refill microscopic holes in the metal and replacing the rust with a new metal coating

"the more of these pivots it covers the more you have to get lined up."
Tell me about it! I overhauled a cheap wind up alarm clock where it was a plate movement and ALL the arbors, including the alarm clapper and spring arbor and the balance staff, had to be pretty much lined up at once. At least the balance had it's own bearings for endshake and I could do that last.
And I did it all with nail clippers, tweezers and an eyeglass screwdriver.
It worked better than when I started though 😁 fixed it running 5+ minutes per day fast.

I have that model, passed down through generations, and it has quite the story. It originated from my great, great grandfather born in the mid 1800's. He came to Pennsylvania where Kansas marshals tracked him down for cattle rustling. They extradited him back to Kansas, where he was acquitted of the charges. His initials are engraved on the back of the watch. It runs and keeps good time, but I will likely have it serviced in the coming years.

Thanks Marshall for your video's. My dad gave me a 14ct gold pocket watch which belonged to his great grandfather. My dad had it since 1962 after his dad passed and was given to him.
I had the watch valued and serviced at Wallace Bishop (an Australian jewellery store). It needed the same work as you have done for your Patreon also with a new main spring at a cost of $1,200au.
My great great grandfather worked for Citizens Life Assurance Company Ltd and the watch is engraved with this, his name and 'excellence in field service' 'Queensland Branch'....1896........an employee appreciation reward I guess.
My dad told me travelling back then was with horse and cart and kids would chase my great great grandfather asking for a ride!!
Citizens Life Assurance Company Ltd of 1896 is now MLC Limited (Mutual Life Citizens) insurance company still going in Australia today..

If you want to go down a rabbit hole, look up "automatic screw machine" and check out the cam driven mechanisms. They are still used for production today, and most high quality US made measuring tools have components made on them. CNC Swiss machines cannot match the speed of a Screw Machine for many simple parts. Also look up Hydromat for multi-spindle machines.

I have a working, very rare, and unique (because of ornate dial) Elgin pocket watch from 1900 it's beautiful and in great condition; I think. I've had it in a museum for the past 8 years.
My Elgin is somewhat similar to the one in your video. I had no idea anyone could clean and service it.
I'm wondering if you would be interested in checking it out and showing it some love on your channel? I would like to know more about my Elgin and I enjoy having it on display.
You could probably tell me more about it than I even know.
    Cool video, thank you.

I have to wonder - might the crystal press tool have "re-domed" the case back just enough to clear the movement?
    Thanks for great videos!

Interesting, I didn't think of that. Maybe? I probably wouldn't try it for the first time on a watch like this but I would try it on something else!

Might want to cover the aluminum die with something just to avoid scratches, but an interesting idea

I’m really inspired to attempt a restoration on my great grandfathers watch. He was the treasurer of Chihuahua, Mexico when Poncho Villa was having his fun. My great Grandfather was Assassinated 3 times according to the NY and El Paso times. The watch is a “Mariner’s watch”?. It has the chimes for every hour and quarter? From what I understand. It’s not only a family piece but quite historical in the scheme of things. I want your help or at least your address. It may be the most elaborate thing you’ve ever seen. It was made in 1904 and has badges of the awards the watch maker received on the inside “dust cover” portion of the watch. It is a pocket watch. Your videos lead me to believe I can fix this myself.
My great grandfather is on the Mexican peso. It’s kinda a big deal in my family. Please help.

My ggma has an old Atlas watch. They are actually a sub brand of Elgin. Still works tho some internals had been replaced.

I'm sorry for sending you this message to general comments but I have a pocket watch that has been in. My family for almost a hundred years or posisbly since being bought from Tiffany and co. Not sure because the Tiffany records office in Chicago had a massive fire in early 1900 and they were lost. It's in not the greatest shape it runs, but it has no hands and the case is wicked rough. I could restore the sterling case my self but was hoping you would take the restoration over because the watchmakers near me,southeastern mass, only deal with newer wrist chronographs and things like that. . if you could help me with compensation I would appreciate your time . Thanks so much.
Btw it's a lognines movement and it has a secondary second movement both hand sets are loss but almost sure that both are originally the blue anodized coated hands. Thanks again for your time love your vids !

Top Job. Makes me think twice about opening old watches with the 8 ball though.... Hard to say if that damage was caused by the ball. Great restoration

i have a hamilton 974 size 16 pocket watch. still has its glass crystal. the case is worn though. non of the gold fill is left.
works like a champ. stem set. not sure what its worth though. serviced in 2016.
i still really like the non battery watches. something reliable should the power stop. very nice to look at.

Great work as always Marshall. I would love to know what kind of paper material is that you use to set solvent cleaned parts on. It looks so lint free and very absorbent.

Nice job. If you put your dial in the cleaner for a minute, it might clean the dirt out of the hairlines. It works great with ultrasound machines.. bounces the dirt right out of the cracks. You won't even see the hairlines.
