Rugged Ridge XHD Snorkel Review: Watch Before You Buy!!!

  • Eight months ago I installed the Rugged Ridge XHD Snorkel for my Jeep Wrangler. The Rugged Ridge snorkel has many issues and I wished I had gone with the AEV snorkel instead. This video describes things like mud clogging the drain, heat exchange with the exhaust manifold, problems installing light bars, and the purpose of a pre-filter. I have a 2013 JKU Rubicon with the 3.6L engine. The snorkel took me eight hours to install. I had to remove my fender, fender flare, rock slider, and fender liner. The snorkel pieces didn't line up properly and a metal tube rests against my exhaust manifold (which rattles like crazy and heats the air).

    Cutting the hood sounds much easier and better than this. No one has actually gone into this detail about this style snorkel. Everyone on TH-cam just says “All you have to do is take off the hood cowling and easy peasy” thank you so much for the detail and honesty.

    This was one of the best reviews I have ever seen, great job. I was looking into this model for my Jeep because I liked the low profile part that you are able to run but I will be rethinking that plan now. Again great job for being so real and honest.

    Really nice review! Appreciate the candid thoughts on the pro's and con's. So often people just rave about their purchase because they don't want to admit that their money could have been spent more wisely and justify the purchase by only talking about the positive aspects.

    Well, what can I say? that was a very honest and very informative review, you hit on all the points why I decided not to purchase that snorkel. I was looking at different brands of snorkels for my 2016 Jeep JK and saw the Rugged Ridge and was considering it, but the over complicated tubing system really put me off of it.
    I went with the Injen snorkel. You have to use their dedicated cold air box with it that, that almost put me off deciding on it as they list for something like $375 on their web page, I found it on Amazon for $250 shipped new so I jumped on it. I purchased their ram air scoop for $119. My son-in-law cut my hood to install it. I am more than happy with it, The engine noise from under the hood is now gone, the jeep is now very quiet inside the cab, and the throttle response is definitely better. The ram air scoop is interchangeable with their snorkel so that is a big benefit.
    The build quality of the Injen snorkel system is of very high quality so I am sure it is going to last the lifetime of my Jeep.
    Thanks for a great review.

      Thank you for being a longtime subscriber +Matteo D. I enjoy doing reviews like this because I'm not motivated by anything other than my thoughts and experiences (meaning, not endorsing a product because they gave it to me). How is the wheeling in your part of the world? Does your Jeep have the 2.8l diesel?

    • @mgnever
      @mgnever 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, my JK it's a 2.8 VM Diesel. It's a great motor, it has a lot of torque and if you chip tuning the car it goes easily to 220/230hp and over 500Nm of torque. I heard you're gonna get the diesel in the new Wrangler (JL). We already have the 3.0 in to the Gran Cherokee and it's really a beast. Too bad you never got any 2.8 CRD JK in USA.
      Wheeling in Italy it's the same kind of off road you show in your video, except we've got really narrow trails (our most used vehicle used in off road it's the suzuki samurai) so it's sometimes it's a little trickier to pass an ostacle. And also, in the north of Italy, where I live, mud it's really bug..Mud Terrain are only dangerous (it's like going on ice) and during the winter we have to use tires like Silverstone mt177 or Simex tires. Loud as hell, really bad on the road but amazing on the mud.
      Anyway, since FCA started Jeep became a really strong brand here. Every year we make an offroad event called "Jeepers Meeting" in the north of Italy. It's 4 days off road event only for the Jeep brand and this June we break the record of signed up car for the event. Over 600 Jeeps. It's a record in europe. People also came from France, Germany, and other countries.
      Thanks for all you're helpful review and your awesome off road footage.
      A big Jeep wave from Italy.

      I almost got a Sami last year when I traded in my '07 JKU. Those are cool little rigs.My plan was to get a cheap beater crawler and then a tow rig. Instead I upgraded to a '13 Rubi that I'm building for overlanding, because the Mrs. got involved and she's not into crawling. Jeepers Meeting sounds like a cool event- are there any videos or websites about it?

    This is a pretty good review however the only issue I have with this is that it feels a little bias. What I mean by that is that a few times you mentioned that the air intake is now alot lower then the stock mount however, provided you've installed it correctly it shouldn't matter what the lowest part of the snorkel is as, again if installed correctly, the intake is now above the windshield. On the plus side, pointing out the few mou thing issues, I.e. air box is now lower and causes the air to not be able to mount on the radio properly and the fact the new tube also touches the manifold was a real insight. All in all, I did appreciate the honest review.

    I installed this in my JK are your review is spot on. I agree. Knowing what I know now I would get the AEV however I can't run the AEV because my Smittybilt SRC Roofrack is in the way! That's why I went with this option. A buddy of mine Fozroamer found a prefilter sock that can go over your snorkel intake that prevents debris from coming in. Seems you can only find them in Australia so he had to special order it. It was called Unifilter or something like that. Thanks again!

    • @Berserkeroffroad
      @Berserkeroffroad  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Other people just turn the head around. But I'd rather have the pre-filter. Another problem I ran into is because the snorkel runs between the fender and sub frame, it's in the way of brackets for steel fenders. Also, I'm getting ready to do a dual battery tray install which requires me to remove my airbox. But it's all siliconed together because of the snorkel. Huge PITA to have to re-do all of it.

    • @masterfuiji
      @masterfuiji 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Berserker Offroad yah I just installed the genesis off-road dual battery kit and yup I had to remove it and resilicone it. But I'm glad I did it. I found some other issues. I also noticed that A newer rugged Ridge or slightly modified aluminum tube exists. I saw one with a big dent already put into it to avoid the issues we are having with it sitting in the heat shield. I may figure out something else for a snorkel in the future. Too many cons vs. the pros.

    So I have installed this snorkle on two diffrents jeeps with no issues. The first one took a bit to install. Both jeeps have been in multiple deep water situations, crossing and stuck. The snorkle has performed great. Most metal inner liners will not work without some trimming and bracket fab work which is fairly simple. The rattle noise he mentioned, I have never had. I made sure to really work the heat shield for the exhaust for clearance. Use marine goop on all connection. This snorkle has some design flaws, but with a little ingenuity can be solved. I like the clean look and the fact that your jeep can be returned back to stock condition without having to purchase a hood. But great review its good to see a product from all sides.

    • @Berserkeroffroad
      @Berserkeroffroad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. The largest issue I had with this snorkel occurred well after I made this video. On a 10-hour drive through Kansas, I was entirely in rain. The prefilter sucked water up that struck my windshield. My air filter was dripping wet like I'd left it in a bath. The resonator chambers attached to the air intake tube to the throttle body were full of water, which likely was sloshing through the throttle body. Who knows how much water went into the engine.

    • @petehayes9497
      @petehayes9497 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont have experience with the pre filter but with the stock head, if I know I'm driving through alot of rain I turn it to the rear. This keeps the splashing rain water out as well as leave the drain open as long as I'm not doing water crossings.

    I installed the same snorkel about 4 years ago and it’s worked great ever since, didn’t have any of the issues you’ve had. perhaps you received a bad quality snorkel that slipped through QC. I have the 3.8 engine not sure if that’d make a big difference, I’m really happy with mine I just switched to the low mount recently for a fresh look

  • @djjasonceol9611

    I love the look for the price of the Rugged Ridge XHD High Mount snorkel with prefilter, but I agree with other snorkels that have a straight shot to the intake of true cold air. Although, I have been searching long and I have only found a few prefiltered snorkels like AEV and such. I love the Injen Deep Water Snorkel but you have to also buy Injens evolution intake which buying both is about $150plus purchase. I love the AEV snorkel but the ONLY thing I raise an eyebrow to is the prefilter. I like the clear prefilter basically so you can visually monitor the dust collection. Now I looked at the Q&As on Extreme Terrain website to see if the rugged ridge prefilter fits on other snorkels and they replied no. Suppose the dimensions don’t work but I’m sure there’s a way to make it work like a gasket to fill the space or something. I don’t plan to do any deep water crossings so my mindset is all about obtaining true cold air that’s dust free and the ram air tips seem like a gateway for heavy rainy days to make me nervous of water collection.

  • @robe.5502
    @robe.5502 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I had bought the AEV (knockoff) snorkel and had similar issues with the rocks, mud and water getting into the screened intake. The pre-filter seems the way to go to help that. Even AEV instructions advise that leaving the plugs open in the bottom of the box for water to exit, acknowledges it is not 100%. Heavy rain wasn't really a problem. An issue I ran into was a river crossing on ice, when I hammered down water would get thrown up pretty high and seemed to get sucked directly into the intake. I flooded my box (w/o hydro lock), which I later added a drain plug. Possibly reversing the head may have helped prevent some of the water from entering and would definitely keep mud out. I would get another snorkel without thought, but using discretion as to the skinny pedal will help to regulate the amount of damage you can inflict. Slowly approaching a hole and crawling through it is failsafe, but balls to the wall, and tire spinning can get you in trouble. I like also the design is solid, the only connection is at the air box and a lot of silicone seals it tight. So there are not any worries of air holes in the system. Cutting the hood only hurt for a few minutes. The end result was worth it. Thanks for the Video!

      +Brick Johnson Thanks for sharing your experience with the AEV snorkel. How hard was the install?

    • @robe.5502
      @robe.5502 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Easy. The hardest part is preparing to do the cut into the hood. More stressful than physical. The trim ring allows for some play in case you are not exact on the template. 2 hole saw cuts pretty much sets entire spot up to be cut. I used a regular jigsaw to cut the hood, it is very soft and cuts easily.

  • @jrkierstead2635
    @jrkierstead2635 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would make note one of the biggest PROS to this snorkel is that you don't have to cut up your panels. I think the biggest selling point is being able to go back to an essentially stock look, once you cut the hood you're stuck with it. I personally don't mind because I plan on running my Jeep until it falls apart but some people wanna have fun but also want to keep their resale value.

    • @Berserkeroffroad
      @Berserkeroffroad  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a fair point. But you do have to trim the cowl cover off the fender and notch the top of the fender.

    Excellent review. I bought this snorkel for the same reasons and have the exact same regrets. I'm an engineer by education and now an anesthesiologist. I thought I was pretty smart but showed myself a fool by getting this snorkel. It looks great up front but the install is ridiculous. No, I take that back. The install is RIDICULOUS. In addition to all the other shortcomings in this video I also think the long narrow airpath creates an air starvation problem. I am so dissatisfied I plan on tearing out the whole thing and replacing with an AEV. I will be hesitant to buy other rugged ridge products.

    Try insulating the metal part of the intake with header wrap to help with heat and vibration

      I've dented it enough that it doesn't rattle. I put strips of rubber tape inside the fender to stop the plastic from reverberating in the fender.

    Hey, nice review. Couple things, I have this snorkel on my 2dr JK. I didn't have the exhaust manifold issues that you had (maybe it fits better with the 3.8L?), but definitely agree that if you don't RTV the hell out of those connections, you're not going to have a good time at water crossings. I was super nervous about that, so I really sealed the crap out of it and I let it sit for 48 hours instead of 24 hours to make sure it was all set up nice and sealed up good. That was my only complaint, that there are a few places it could fail. I was having heat issues right before I installed it, passing over Altamont Pass on the way down to San Jose at about 110 degrees out this summer and my engine was getting just hot enough to turn the light on. I installed the snorkel and that problem was instantly gone. Every other trip this summer over Altamont Pass, I had no issues, even in stop and go on the huge incline up the mountain, no more heat issues. So I don't think the exhaust manifold (if it's as close to mine as yours), is causing any heat issues on the air. I think it's still cooler than it was with the stock air box.

      @Berserkeroffroad  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Vinny Gullotta thank you for the reply. I'm glad to see it's working for you and that you aren't having heat issues. I don't know how it mounts on the 3.8 but on in my case it's too close to the exhaust manifold. They even put a heat shield on the aluminum pipe because they knew it was hot there. As I said in the video it only ran hot like that in stop-and-go traffic in the summer (well, that and when I'm romping on the gas in a mud hole). My commute is an hour each way and it takes that long to get up to temp. Thanks again for commenting. What's your Jeep like and how is the wheeling in your area?

    • @vgullotta
      @vgullotta 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an 07 JK on 35's (now with stock suspension =-O ) and flat fender flares. Too many mods to list em all lol. Wheeling here in Cali is awesome. There are SVRAs all over and we have the Rubicon Trail just a couple hours north, so we have plenty of awesome wheeling out here. Not nearly as much mud as you guys have though, it's definitely more of a rock crawling or sand dune state than a muddin state lol

    • @vgullotta
      @vgullotta 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      on my next break, I'm going to go out there and crawl under it and take a look and see how close mine gets to the manifold. Maybe I'll snap a picture if I can get a good one.

    • @Berserkeroffroad
      @Berserkeroffroad  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm envious that you Cali guys have so many cool places to wheel close to you. Besides a few local ORV parks it's an 8+ hr drive to anything respectable.

    Hi. Thanks for all the important details... I was leaning towards this one just because I like that you can go from hi-mount for trail to low-mount for regular drives... and get the cold air. Do you know of other types of snorkel that have both hi-low mounts options ?

    • @Berserkeroffroad
      @Berserkeroffroad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd go with the AEV. That's what I'm installing on my Gladiator. I've learned if you're going to change something on your Jeep, buy the best part you can. It's more costly re-doing it with inferior products.

    The only issue i had when installing mine was that the outer splash guard did not completely fit back in place. Also if you add some exhaust wrap to the aluminum tube you will not get any rattling.

    • @Berserkeroffroad
      @Berserkeroffroad  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brandon Koay the pre-filter restricts airflow. The standard opening does create a slight forced induction effect but overall my mileage didn't change. So it doesn't increase power.

    It sucks because in my opinion the Rugged Ridge looks the best when installed, but the AEV seems to be the most practical. I did notice on the JL version, Rugged Ridge goes down through that corner cowling and direct to the airbag without going down at all. I'll be installing the Rugged Ridge on a Gladiator in a few months and installation looks to be light years more simple.

    This took you 8 hours to do. WOW how many beers or smoke breaks did you take. I did mine Friday night before SEMA in 3 hours by myself. Install was very easy. Only thing id say is dont use the template for cutting the fender. Just line it up make by hand and cut.

    • @Berserkeroffroad
      @Berserkeroffroad  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad yours went smooth. Taking my slider off added an hour and I had fitment issues. Not a single part lined up. Everything had to be coerced into position. The upper snorkel wasn't lining up through the cowl, the aluminum intake tube was twisted too far against the manifold, etc. The plastic nipple that the drain plug attaches to snapped off in shipping so I had to melt it back into place. Like I said, my install SUCKED.

    • @Berserkeroffroad

      +Trace Cruz I had to bend the bracket that attaches to the brake line mount. Sometimes the plastic box inside the fender shakes as well. I slide foam pieces in there to stop that.

    What does the depth of the travel of the air have to do with the air intake? Good or bad thing? Why?

    • @Berserkeroffroad
      @Berserkeroffroad  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The point I'm making is if you get a leak in the intake it'll fill with water on a deep crossing.

    • @xinarin
      @xinarin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahh, gotcha. I guess I am not as concerned with that as I would be having a downhill channel running straight to the intake... get a good splash in the snorkel and it funnels it right to the air filter? I would rather have the s bend (kindof like how your sink works with the trap) to catch any water that makes it inside the snorkel (especially when running the low mount) and have that catch be away from the air box... afterall, assuming it doesn't get clogged with mud, that water will drain out of the valve, right?

  • @blackdiamondrob

    someone someday may come up with something similar to an exhaust bypass. cover your snorkel during rain, mud. then open for offroad use by turning a lever or switch so you can run between stock and snorkel. wheres sharktank when you needem

    You also get mud in your snorkel because you need to switch to the mushroom type top for the snorkel.

What happens if you’re on a long trail and a branch snags you’re air pipe and rips it off, wait did you already cut your Jeep up to install snorkel, nevermind everything should be fine

    I does not recommend the ARB Safari Snorkel for jeep JK, because you CAN'T use now or in the future the new ones Shocks with reservory, the space between front right Shock and plastic is very few, so it is really a big problem to upgrade your shocks such as RC Vertex or FOX, and others brands.. BE careful because this is an error or engineers of ARB in this snorkel design.
