Regarding the cover crop area, you should use part of it for a 3 sisters' type experiment. I've seen people do the traditional Corn, Green beans and squash, but some do watermelon instead of squash. See if there are any other variations out there you like better. This is my submission; Three Sisters garden.

This video almost made me cry when you got to your pond! All the forethought, care, and execution is exactly what I've been wanting to do for my own property. The permeable flagstone patio on top of the aquablocks, the rainwater refill, the pond water for irrigation, and the thoughtful plantings that contribute to water quality/fish habitat/water retention/food, is just *chef's kiss*. Can't wait to see how it, the rest of your property, and you evolve over the years!

AMAZING!! Its crazy how much you have accomplished in just 18 months. I get excited to see your homesteading updates. Its not something i can currently do, but it would be nice to be able to do one day. Its a lot of work just to maintain the beds i currently have with my limited knowledge. Haha.
Im putting in an irrigation system right now and it broke me today. I think i finally figured it out but the sun was going down and i decided to take the night off. Im hoping i can finish it tomorrow if it doesnt rain. I dont want to lose this momentum.
The chicckys are getting so big! I am in love with lavender. Are they producing eggs yet? Or what age do they start? I know nothing about chickens.
That mural IS EPIC. Love that you added that splash of color in the back drop.
Keep up with all the hard and amazing work! You got this!

Everything looks so amazing! Once again this is my dream but here in the north. :) One thing Id like to suggest is to get solitary bees instead of a hive. Solitary bees are native whereas honey bees are not. And a cute little painted up solitary bee house would fit right in.

For the front yard, you should put solar lanterns on every other post. I think it would look nice and would light up your front.
also for the solar! Hurry! It's taking them forever to get it connected to SDGE or the Community Power. We got Solar in San Diego city in February and it's still not online. I think everyone is trying to get it done before summer.

You could keep that old, large grapefruit tree with the established roots! Look into grafting the main stems of young fruit trees onto thinner branches of the existing grapefruit tree, and doing careful and gradual pruning of the old growth. The multiple new young fruit tree grafts will grow much faster, using the established root system of the old tree!

  • @nicolasbertin8552

Wow that's a crazy amount of work those driplines... Regarding the cover crops, the answer is easy : squash down the lot instead of chopping it, and mulch it. You can direct plant in it about 2-3 weeks later, provided it rains on it or that you water it. Sadly in San Diego you'll probably have to water it so it decomposes. You can then plant tomatoes and stuff directly in it. If you want corn or squashes, add some manure, grass clippings or compost underneath the mulch, half that half wood chips, and it works great. If your cover crop has done its job, you shouldn't need to till it. Growing stuff in your native soil is much much better than in raised beds. Also, you should do a flower patch in this cover crop area as well. Some perennials, shrubs, herbs, that kind of thing. The diversity of microbes that it provides will actually helps your veggies grow (if they're planted not far from them). And in case you didn't know, in hot summers like yours, tomatoes and squashes prefer to grow in part shade. In the South of France, people will add a shading cloth to their greenhouses or even do strutures outside with shading material. You get a better crop yield.
