Man, you've gotta get some rice growing in there! It's amazing how quickly new life just shows up when you have a water source. We're in the middle of Phoenix, but our landlord refused to fix our pool for about 6 months. At first, it was just mosquitoes, but shortly after, we started seeing dragonflies and all sorts of other insect larvae in the pool. Raccoons, skunks, coyotes and even had an owl for little while. Makes me wish we could create more greenspace in our cities

Very true we had a pool that sprung a leak halfway up once it drained to that point we ended up with thousands of tree frog tadpoles in the pool. And then thousands of tree frogs in the backyard as they grew up.

The energy Kevin gets when actually talking about his water plants after the build vs. the pond building experience is tantamount, I love it. I love this beautiful, EPIC pond, and Kevin knows how to leave different industry experts to do their thing. Instead of trying to deep dive ponds, he put a pond expert TH-camr front and center and that's game recognizing game. It's truly EPIC. Way to go, Kevin - this was SO worth the teasers and wait to see. PAPYRUS?? LETS GOOOO.

In the Seattle area I would go to new development sites that had wetlands and collect amphibian eggs before the wetlands were destroyed. I’d put them in my pond and watch them grow into frogs or salamanders then release them back into areas that were protected. It’s a lot of fun! Plus more biodiversity in you pond is always cool.

Hey Kevin, fun fact: if you wanna do some fully underwater gardening (mostly inedible plants but absolutely beautiful) you can go get some anubias or bucephalandra plants, tie them on a piece of driftwood or a rock, throw them into the pond and in a few months to years you will have a beautiful underwater bush! You can do the same with java fern (microsorum) as well. They can sometimes if they get big enough even grow their leaves out of the water and live like that no problem. Or if you want a more cold-water kelp-ish style you can look into some egeria densa or hornwort, they grow incredibly fast and propagate easily and you can feed the excess to for example chicken. Also as for me personally - I always LOVE to see some mosses growing around the waterfall - they need a lot of moisture to be happy and healthy but they are so beautiful and really decorative. I love everything about water features and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as us aqua nerds do!

Amazing pond! Plant some edible bananas in the basin to shade the patio/ basin! You might need a bib liner from where the final waterfall flows into the basin to direct water to it, but bananas can be planted in gravel as long as the roots can get into the water. Or maybe that moist corner you showed. Also nice that you didn’t do cliff hangers…

I love that when ed was explaining the filter your eyes just glazed over. It's great to see you noob out.
This pond was a bit of a wasted opportunity. You've already diverted your grey water into the garden, diverting it into a a submerged planted "wetlands" reservoir would have allowed you to divert your sink water as well. Essentially it would have turned your entire pond into a natural filtration and nutrient enrichment system which could then be used to water and feed your plants.
You wouldn't be able to sit on the filter, but you'd have a ton more plants, would look stunning and filling the reservoir wouldn't have wasted a drop of water.
Anyway, welcome to the aquatics community.

You know, I wasn't 100% sold on a water feature myself, as it seemed like a waste of power to keep a waterfall going and pumps and filters. But then you mentioned seeing beneficial insects and I realized it may be worth it, to provide habitat for some wildlife. Opened my eyes once again, there

That pond is GORGEOUS! such an interesting process to watch. Goodness it's magic what they did with your yard. Super excited to see the taro and how it grow/harvests.

You'll have to keep an eye on those plants in the pond if you don't have something to eat them eventually. I know the water lettuce looks REALLY cool once it spreads, but it can become invasive REALLY fast! My mom got some and it sends out runners (kinda like strawberries). She gave me a bunch to bring back to the farm with me for one of our ponds that needs some help. Unfortunately, something ate it all. (I suspect it was the cows.....they'll eat anything green!) But, I'll just get more from her again in the future. ;)
I loved that you used the bio-balls with the filter. I've seen those used with salt water tanks, but not with ponds. However, it makes total sense to use them this way. They will help build your ecosystem in no time!
With everything you've accomplished in the past year, it will be interesting to see what develops this year. You've already made mention of several things, so I'm looking forward to future videos. Bravo! EPIC project with an EPIC outcome!

Wow wow wow, the episode I have been waiting for! It’s absolutely beautiful! I can’t wait to see it mature, u definitely need to put some lights at the bottom of the pond so u can enjoy the view at night too.

It was so nice to see Laura mentioned :D I found your page through Mark, then you mention Laura.. my three favorite gardeners all knowing each other... :) Also, grow something fun that attracts dragonflies! I see them where I live randomly, but growing up in Northern California, they were a constant and I love them so much :)

This is just beautiful!! (swoon) I love the sound of the water. It sounds so relaxing. I know the birds are going to love it. The butterflies will too I'm sure. And the bees. The list of benefits you added by installing this pond is long. Would be the perfect way to start your morning and end your evening too. Love it! Great job. I hope you plant some flowers for color as a backdrop to add even more beauty.

Curious if you'll have to worry about mosquitoes laying eggs in any corners of the standing water? Did Ed have any insight for keeping unwanted insects at bay?

    • @evada4144
      @evada4144 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@epicgardeningWhat kinds of fish did you choose? You can actually hang nesting boxes for bats (and birds that you want to attract of course) local to your area, too. They swoop up a lot of mosquitoes and it looks so cool to see them flying. To provide nesting boxes at a suitable location as a substitute for further natural habitats to add to your truly epic pond is really easy.

I have a 2.5k gallon pond and it's 7 years old. Never have a mosquito problem. The fish eat a lot of the eggs and larvae and the pond plants attract dragonflies which means anything that *does* make it to adulthood gets eaten by them. I love being out by it during mosquito season because I never get bit (and I was always the mosquitoes favourite snack before).

    • @Nikki-mx5my
