I’m in 7b and it is awesome! We can grow a lot of cold hardy plants, and a lot of warm weather plants. But I still get jealous of San Diego year round gardening. :)
3 out of the top 4 soils in the soil tests were Miracle Gro. I’m still surprised by those results and happy that most of my plants are thriving in it. It was the cheapest and easiest to get. $13 for the 55qt bag of Moisture Control. Funny thing is, I looked down on my mom for using it then said screw it because of the price and the quality was better than the super cheap soil I originally bought 😂😂😂 ❤ I apologized ❤❤❤❤❤
Would be very interesting to see the bagged soil experiment done in different ways and see the results 1. From year to year just adding a small amount of the same type each year to top off, 2. Organic and unfertilized soils with a natural fertilizer added, and 3. All of the bagged soils sifted to remove as much of the woody bits as possible.

My suggestion that loads might already have done - nasturtium pesto is delicious 😋😋, use the same olive oil, parmesan, garlic and even a little balsamic glaze🤔, oh and pine nuts
I’m growing my peppers in bags. I lined them up along the fence on the west side of my yard, about 3ft away. The light is perfect and hot afternoon sun isn’t a problem. Hot here in south Texas 🥵

If you have a ton of eggs, I recommend making Angel food cake with all the egg whites and then you can make homemade ice cream with all the egg yolks. Or make a huge batch of custard and fill up a bunch of cream puffs. You lighten the custard by mixing with whipped cream and then you have amazing cream puffs that are just like Beard Papa’s. Dim sum style egg custard tarts are another way to go. It’s basically a mini custard pie. Ramen eggs are a great way to eat them for lunch/dinner. Just make a rice bowl and have tasty ramen eggs for every meal. Don’t have to just have eggs for breakfast. We make French toast and egg & cheese sandwiches for breakfast on the regular.
For egg recipes, please try looking at some asian cuisines! I find western style egg recipes so limited T_T 1. Egg curry is tomato based, similar to shakshuka, you might love that on top of rice as a dinner. 2. Marinated mayak eggs (korean) are great, and last in the fridge for about a week. 3. Thai style scrambled eggs is another tomato based recipe, and it's SO incredible, so full of umami. Also eat on rice (hotthaikitchen has a great recipe) 4. Not an asian recipe, but sous vide egg bites are incredible and make great use of garden finds. Plus you're getting mildly into canning category there.

The beginning of this reminded me of the concept of: good, better, best. ANYONE who is growing their own food is doing something good and I won’t judge them for using synthetic if that is what is getting them in the garden. Better is obviously leaning toward organic growing principles. Best is growing organically and working toward that self-sufficient closed loop circuit. I don’t use synthetic ingredients in my garden but I won’t hate on someone who does. The food they’re growing is just replacing other food that is also grown synthetically that they’re buying in the grocery store.
Carrots, get a Fullstar chopper to quickly cube them anD then blanch, freeze in 1 or 2 cup measures vacuum sealed. I love pulling them out to throw in soups and stews. Also, my Lee Valley 10 year garden diary is a life saver, it’s a serious game changer. Normally I would be freaking out right now because we have had such a cold spring that I think I won’t get a pepper or sweet potato harvest but I can see that in previous years I have actually planted as late as June 20 and had great harvests.
You just laid out what I did to make a mix to fill a low spot in my in-ground garden: garden soil, chicken manure, and homemade compost. If you could test what combo works best for doing that I would worship you as gardening gods.
Fully agree with some shade for peppers My habaneros, Serranos, tobascos are all doing well. But for whatever reason I have had trouble with bell pepper varieties. Not sure what the deal is but I am on my second year of not doing so hot with those (pun intended)

I enjoy the freaky garden recipes. How do people think their tried and true recipes came to be? They were weird and freaky at the start. My squash has been suffering from powdering mildew as well. I have to stay on top of pruning them out. I think next share I will try and plant salvias or some other sulfur-producing plant to see if the fungal disease is mitigated.
the age old organic vs synthetic debate, which is actually just confusing terms and pretending things belong into one or another category. when humans just started modifying plants for farm production, there was not much choice of fertilizer. now we feed 8 billion people, thanks to more concentrated forms of fertilizer we developed, which need to be diluted properly for application and arent harmful to soil at all when done properly. so with "organics" you're just trying to re-create (but actually pretend) some imaginary utopian farming from centuries ago, that never was all that "organic" enthusiasts imagine. dumping massive amounts of dead wood matter onto soil is a recent invention that makes a lot of money for the sellers, but no farm grower in their right mind would be doing this to their soil, as they're not growing mushrooms.
Using wood chip mulch on your garden is not new. And it’s just mulch. And you can get wood chip mulch for free using chip drop so I’m not really sure what you’re going on about…
The reason why old farmers didn’t use mulch on their fields is because of plowing and not wanting to put carbon into the soil that would steal the nitrogen. But they did do organic forms of fertilizing by using aged animal manure which is compost.
@@francestaylor9156 : how much carbon is retained vs released as CO2 for say a 1 tonne of compost/mulch in 1 year? farmers are clever hard workers, and dont do work that has little if any ROI.

My first Grow Bag Potato harvest, I made the dirty smashed, Dark Red Norland Potato. Was wonderful. ^ more bags of Potato to go, plus, refreshed, then, replanted potato into the grow bag, for an October Harvest

I have found some commercial compost that had lots of chunks of wood with various colors of paint on it. (Blue, green,white) I was appalled & tried to take it back for a refund. The place where I bought it refused to refund my money & didn’t even offer a trade/substitution. This was during the height of the pandemic & some businesses felt that they could get by with practices like that because of the supply/demand dynamic.
I'm really curious about the difference in microbiology in a container vs. in ground. It's definitely not sterile. I do include compost. But am I wasting my time adding granular organic fertilizers? Currently I split the difference and use granular organic at planting and then carry on with water soluble synthetic.

It's interesting to hear about the different products available! I don't live in the US and here, everyone uses "garden soil" for containers, raised beds, and topping up in ground beds with or without extra additions like perlite, and it's very effective. I think the ingredients must be different.
With the fertilizer experiment, could you do a bag with just being topped off with compost as the fertilizer? I use homemade compost throughout the season as my fertilizer and my plants love it. It also helps with the raised bed shrinkage that naturally happens.
I understand different preferences, but I feel like the “American potato salad” comment was a bit hyperbolic. I haven’t found any store or homemade version that comes close to my family recipe, but I don’t believe the whole genre is deficient as a result. 😂
The carrot salad. Its a very very old way of eating carrots. When i was a child my mom would use a carrot peeler to slice them thin. She would then use lemon, salt and then put them in the freezer just a little to get that cold. One of the core memories of my childhood. ❤
I am in central Florida and it has been years since our last frost. I am Coastal so even 1 mile away they got frost. Sounds great but no frost equals not bug kill. White flies are my issue currently.
It’s crazy to me how little amount of experiments have been performed and yet we gardeners confidently say what works best. I’m in healthcare and research is the foundation of the entire industry, along with care itself.

I’m not liking the transition period either and plan on having more starts to fill in the spaces. My flowers were late coming up this year, but some of my bolted mustard has pretty yellow flowers 😂. Whenever I need to use up a lot of eggs (at least 5), I usually make Korean rolled eggs or the marinated eggs. Making rolled eggs is actually easier than it looks, so don't get intimidated when you watch how it's done.

In San Diego I like Native West their retail location is "The Little Barn", great local plants and fair prices. In the LA area Native West is amazing and their nursery is worth a visit if you are up there
If you want to do a test like you say here 6:39 you need to really think it through. Small variables may seem like you are going into the weeds but they matter. They would need to be clones from a plant that is know for consistency and cut the clone from the same section of the plant because the hormones in the plant do change a lot from old growth and new. Temperature of the soil needs to be consistent regardless of how hard it may seem to achieve. The vpd should all be the same as well as the DLI for each of the clones. You would need to do a ph and ec check for consistency for all of the soils used.

I bought one roll out layer nest and as soon as I can afford it , will buy another one
