According to Mark Knopfler the guy on lead guitar this is a true story. One evening he walked into a pub in London and a pretty mediocre band were playing and they called themselves the Sultans of Swing. This is the story. All those things going through your head meant something different when this song was penned.
@@ImFrancis01 You get a shiver in the dark It's a raining in the park but meantime- South of the river you stop and you hold everything A band is blowing Dixie, double four time You feel alright when you hear the music ring Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down Competition in other places Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound Way on down south Way on down south London town You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing They said an old guitar is all, he can afford When he gets up under the lights to play his thing And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright He can play the Honky Tonk like anything Savin' it up, for Friday night With the Sultans We're the Sultans of Swing There’s a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner Drunk and dressed in their best baggies and their best Kings road They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band It ain't what they call Rock and Roll And the Sultans Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole Creole And then the man he steps right up to the microphone And says at last just as the time bell rings "Goodnight, now it's time to go home" Then he makes it fast with one more thing "We are the Sultans We are the Sultans of Swing"
The last 4 minutes of this song are straight Euphoric. It literally never gets old. It’s like the pinnacle of music to me, never heard anything that is as sonically pleasing as the build up to the end of this song.
Dire Straits is the best fricking band EVER. What talent!! Unbelievable. Sultans of Swing just grabs you like a tiger by the tail and you hold on for dear life as that song takes you from here to eternity. Mark Knopler is one of the best guartist in the world...hands down.
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗 What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making your living like that wouldn't suck. Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩
You are correctly overwhelmed with the massive talent in this band with Maestro Mark Knopfler out front. Perfect reaction!

Terry Williams on the drums just nailed this from the start and held the tempo - there is a point when Mark looks at him in the video checking if he was OK to go for the solo - they gave him some breaks in between and now legendary
Honky-tonk is a bar that provides mainly country music to its patrons. Honky tonk is also a style of music played in such establishments. It can also refer to the type of piano known as tack piano used to play such music. Many big names began their careers as amateur musicians in honky-tonks as it is easier to enter but with some symbolic small pay.
Definitely one of the greatest live performances of all-time!!! The drummer is Terry Williams, and Mark Knopfler, the lead singer, is one of the top 5 greatest guitarists of all-time as well!!
Thats the thing with mark Knopfler and his band dire straits, they dont think theyre good, THEY KNOW THEY'RE GREAT and can give those cool little grins ss they know it. And a Honky tonk is like a little dive bar with live music. You should do Dire Straits. Telegraph Rd Alchemy Live.
What your dealing with here, is one of the greatest songs ever written, by the singer, and guitarist Mark Knopfler, one of the greatest guitar players and song writers ever. The band performance here was stunning, Mark was untouchable around this era. Listen to any song from this Alchemy concert, try Tunnel of Love next.
"Swing" in this context refers to a style of music popular in the 1940s, typically performed by the Big Bands: Glenn Miller, Harry James, etc. Nothing to do with "swinger" lifestyle.
Also - I think I know why the crowd wasn't going wild. I was a pretty typical Dire Straits fan back in the day so I think it's safe to say the audience were stoned out of their minds, too mellowed out to go wild, just vibin; and feelin' the music. I know I would have been that way at that show :-)
A couple of things for you as a first time viewer to your channel. First, I would suggest going to Google and researching the song you are going to react to prior to listening to the song and reacting to it, that way you understand a little bit of the history and meaning of the song before listening. Secondly, and probably the most important thing as you continue to build your channel, I would highly recommend that you do not pause the video so frequently during your reactions! This is especially true when you have an artist like Mark Knopfler in the middle of a guitar feature like you did at the end. Finally, the band is named Dire Straits, like the word straight, as in a straight line, or actually in the context of the band name, the term dire straits means to be in a very bad predicament or situation. After saying all of that, you picked a great song to react to and I will certainly be checking out more of you videos in the future. Best of luck, God Bless
Hola!! Vi otra reacción que hiciste y no me gustó, dije que no me suscribía 😢... ahora, desfasada en el tiempo veo ésta. Gracias, gracias!! GRACIAS 🙏
"Honky tonk" is a musical style dating back a hundred years or more, mostly based around a style of piano playing similar to ragtime with more emphasis on rhythm
In 1988 Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert in London, Mark Knopfler invited great guitarist Eric Clapton to play with the band during this song.
2nd reaction i see on your yt and sub . You are very normal person. In good way. If you will be in Poland one day give me a messege. Cold beer and good music.
I love that you went straight to the legendary Alchemy Live performance of this great song, but I do recommend listening to the studio version as well. It's not as epic, though it's still great. But the main difference is that you can better understand the lyrics and the story that's being told. If you'd like to know about the history of this song and the band, I recommend Professor of Rock's great video, "The AMUSING Inspriation Behind Dire Straits CLASSIC 70s Hit". Thanks for the fun reaction. Glad you had such a good time listening to this. In case you were wondering who's who, Mark Knopfler is the one killing it on Lead Guitar, Terry Williams (who replaced original band member Pick Withers for this performance) is the one going absolutely crazy on the drums, John Illsley is the excellent bassist you pointed out (other than Knopfler, the only original band member playing here), Hal Lindes (replacing original member David Knopfler, Mark's younger brother) is guitar and backup vocals, and Alan Clark (not an original band member, but close to it) is on keyboard.
His singing is very reminiscent of Bob Dylan, ,that kind of talking/singing. And the band is phenomenal. I thik I read the "George with all those fancy chords" is the singer's brother. A honkytonk is both a bar that provides country music for its customers and that style of music. It can also refer to the type of piano used to play such music. Bars of this kind are common in the South and Southwestt United States
I think the only thing that would be more annoying to me is a TH-cam advertisement at every pause. You should try to get the interruptions down to every 30 seconds of video playtime before you pause the video and start talking. At least the viewer can plan on knowing it's going to be interrupted. I'm glad you liked it. I've loved it since it was on the radio. Please check up on pausing every time a thought crosses your mind.
13: 40 No! It's not the tempo that's changed, it's the dynamics that have changed! It goes quieter, not slower. So many people nowadays do not recognise the difference because all music now has no dynamics. I am not dissing you but I am trying to educate you (as a piano teacher myself). I love the video, but more people should recognise the difference between tempo and dynamics, it's a big deal. PS also Chelsea follower.
Sorry but you're pausing and talking too much, it puts people off watching you, you have to think of your viewer's and not so much talking, it just spoils it. If you were watching it as a viewer you'd feel the same. Give the video a chance please.....
i grew up with them i was 13 in 1980 when i brought this alboum and listen to it and my father said who are this drug users hahahahaha. after 2 days i caught him listening to them and he apologise hahahahahaha he said that mark is the best quitarist he ever listen in his life
Pausing a hundred times just to say you love it, is huge irritating. Especially the interruptions in the middle of Knopflers’ guitar solos are like insulting his genius.
You obviously enjoyed Dire Straits ? … but you interrupted too much … and stopped several times in the middle of a solo - fine for you but people are listening.
Honky Tonk is a hole-in-the-wall bar. Not typically a place as a musician where you are going to become famous. It can also refer to a type of music and or general feeling of a place or person. Typically kinda laid back and funky.
According to Mark Knopfler the guy on lead guitar this is a true story.

Oh okay, that's an interesting story.
@@ImFrancis01 You get a shiver in the dark

A band is blowing Dixie, double four time
You feel alright when you hear the music ring
Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down
Competition in other places
Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound
Way on down south
Way on down south
London town
You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords
Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
They said an old guitar is all, he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright
He can play the Honky Tonk like anything
Savin' it up, for Friday night
With the Sultans
We're the Sultans of Swing
There’s a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best baggies and their best Kings road
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band
It ain't what they call Rock and Roll
And the Sultans
Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole
Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
"Goodnight, now it's time to go home"
Then he makes it fast with one more thing
"We are the Sultans
We are the Sultans of Swing"
You cant stop something like this every minute or two that's criminal
The last 4 minutes of this song are straight Euphoric. It literally never gets old. It’s like the pinnacle of music to me, never heard anything that is as sonically pleasing as the build up to the end of this song.
Perfectly said.
So true! I have listened to it 100’s of times. It makes me happy! 😊
To blow your mind further...he is left handed, playing a right handed guitar, and he doesn't use a pick, he is plucking that music out.
Unreal!
Dire Straits is the best fricking band EVER. What talent!! Unbelievable. Sultans of Swing just grabs you like a tiger by the tail and you hold on for dear life as that song takes you from here to eternity. Mark Knopler is one of the best guartist in the world...hands down.
For me the greatest band in the world , Bob Dylan said they were the best live band he ever saw , that's good enough for me

I dig the way you dug this music dude.
Kinda like I did on first hearing 40+ yrs ago.
Never pause so much during guitar solos especially this one!
This is huge. An absolute classic. An exciting band in studio and in live arenas
I'm not much for going to concerts but I would have killed to be there for this performance... Legendary.
I would have love to be apart of that

The band performance here was stunning, Mark was untouchable around this era. Listen to any song from this Alchemy concert, try Tunnel of Love next.
I enjoyed every minutes of it
I had to do it! He’s singing about a band he saw in a bar that was named “ The Sultans of Swing”
Love your reaction!
Great reaction! That's called shredding the guitar!
Mark Knopfler is one of the world's truly great singer/songwriter/performers. He's a genius. The drummer here is Terry Williams.
I tell you they killed it!
Mark Knopfler, one of the best guitarist in the world.
Telegraph road from same live is out of this world 😌🔥🎸

swing is also a genre of music

Thank you that means a lot!
Mark Knopfler uses no finger picks but plays similar to picking on a banjo ..
That wide smile on the last riff....great reaction. Subscribed! X
Awesome! Thank you!
Dire Straits played the whole set finger picking no Plecks.
Mark Knopfler outstanding why
Mark was playing a right handed guitar but was left handed
now that is talent!
Grandgrandpa 71 here: You no Honkey tonk. A Honkey Thong - you have to find out.🤣😝😋
You picked up on every little nuance. Great reaction. Subscribed!
Thanks for the sub!

Cool reaction Drogbajr
"you dont do that"???like breaking up the solo(s)
The key to this amazing performance was John Illsley's Wal Bass ;)
Wal's are like taking a Bazooka to a knife fight.
Top marks for the Chelsea scarf and name 👍.
I love that you love it. You stopped the vid too much. It can't flow along as it should.
Man, pls react to Telegraph Road Alchemy live, there're another great solos
I will try my best
El mundo lo ama !! Saludos desde Argentina

I will have to check out Bob Dylan
and Bob Dylan has collaborated with Mark Knopfler since 1979.
Handy hint... don't yak or stop a solo, dude.
noted I will remember that next time

A Honkie Tonk is generally a country bar.
Check out Telegraph Road - Alchemy ... just as good if not an even better jam session
I will try to
Forgive me, but try not to react in the middle of each solo (you are missing the true essence of the piece). Still, good luck with your channel

And little brother... who finger-picks a Fender Strat?? Only Mark Knofler! P.S. A honkey tonk is an American Southern neighborhood bar.
Swing is a term of the past that refers to jazz
oh okay
Why keep pausing let it play, then comment.
Just a recommendation for future videos - don't pause the video so much. It kinda ruins the vibe. Good luck with your channel.
Stop stopping so often. You ruin the solos.

You pause too much, way too much.
Look at the drummer don’t forget about him
Ted Williams👍
You may have found out by now, but a "Honky Tonk" is an upright piano often poorly tuned and played in a certain jaunty style.
that's cool!
Because they had respect for performers back then in my day, not like today where they yell and scream and act so badly they drown out the band.
Pausing every 10seconds.
No thanks.
noted
Interrupting the video so much is going to cost you subscribers.
Interrupt less, will get more viewers
noted next time
Wait until the end.
I did!
Honky Tonk - Piano !!
react to the song 16 times is a bit to much and never during a guitar solo
Young fella... check out Stevie Ray Vaughn
So many stoppages. Makes it so hard to focus
A "honky-tonk" is a dive bar where they play Country music or blues. Don't EVER stop a song in the middle of a solo, thumbs down.
makes sense thank you for sharing
Sorry but you're pausing and talking too much, it puts people off watching you, you have to think of your viewer's and not so much talking, it just spoils it.

Give the video a chance please.....
understandable and thank you for watching
Enjoyable reaction. Thank you.
Honky Tonk. Southern U.S. dance hall.
Gave up half way through far too many interuptions
Anybody ever told you that you're not supposed to stop during a guitar solo. You ruined it.

Great song to dance to!
I want what he's on.
haha who?
i bet you gonna listen it again so you can enjoy it instead of cutting the song all the time.
Yeah I did that
its so annoying when he stops after every 10 sec.
Shame about the football scarf behind you man. It was all OK till I spotted that.
haha it's a great football scarf
