I have a strong interest in sound quality of studio over live performance. This concert along with a few other exceptions turn that thinking upside down. The work that was displayed here (drums especially) outshone the studio version tenfold. Notice the touch of Brothers In Arms that Mark added at the end of the set. The faster pace drove it better as well. Great choice Mike!
Love Dire Straits! I love a group or artist that has a distinct/unique sound. When you can instantly recognize them when you hear them on the radio! This takes me back to when music was good!
There is a fascinating video on TH-cam of Mark explaining his finger picking technique and that it goes against everything being taught in music schools everywhere.
I used to listen to this on the way to school when my Dad drove me (I'm British) and thought he was so uncool (I used to duck when people saw me as back then he had a soft top car). Now at 26 I listen to the music he listened to and love it, I realise what amazing music is. My Dad now has MS and is immobile almost and moves in a wheelchair, I've just asked him to fly to France with me and see Dire Straits to see their experience live one last time, and put our differences aside.
They've been one of the most iconic rock band abound 80's. Mark Knopfler the lead guitarist is an excellent compositor and song writer. Up the straits 🔥
Please, PLEASE, do "Telegraph Road" from the Alchemy tour....the outro solo will make you sweat. Follow that up with "Brothers in Arms" from the same tour - if it doesn't bring a tear, you have no soul.
The Recorded Version is beautiful being my Favorite of all time songs in my 70 years of life. The Live performance which is the Long Version is just too awesome to be real, but Truth is before our eyes. They all played a role in this music, so I will not single out any single player yet I do have my unspoken favorite Drummer and Guitarist.
U were right on the money about sounding like a banjo style- he was influenced by country and folk fingerpicker's, like Chet Atkins etc. I think he was mostly self taught- which created his unorthodox style, and sound- which worked out pretty good I think LOL!
This is just acrobatics on a guitar, i see them making salto's flying in the air and they go faster, and faster and faster.... ps. you really nailed the description on how Magic Mark plays the guitar, its like he plays it like the Banjo, that is so true and so wicked.
you've hit gold with the Alchemy record. It is amazing from start to finish!! In my opinion their best work was done before this. Alchemy sort of caps it up. Their work before this is one of the most inspired in rock history, specially if you like an elegant bluesie sort of sound. Like nothing else.
You might also like Dire Straits song "Brothers In Arms". This band is off the chain with ability & execution. Mark, the drummer, that bass line is killer too. Thanks for doing this sweetie... 💜💜
The 80s produced some of the best music. Every genre has its era but the 80s put out some great music. I’m bias of course going on 41 lol. Pop, rock, metal, rap, and yes real country. Michael Jackson, Prince, Motley Cru, Stevie Ray Vaughn “ 🎸 GOAT”, Metallica, Megadeath, Sugar Hill Gang, Slick Rick, NWA, Young MC, Tone Loc, the 80s was a great decade of music.
Love this one. I actually learned my first dancing moves and rythm thx to dire straits. When i was a young boy my dad used to put make me put my feet above his feets and he would dance around ro Dire straits. I cherish those memories.
Ahh! Another sound of my youth! Love Dire Straits :D Loved Skateaway and Private Investigations was my favourite track for a very long time! Thank you for sharing
Love the band song and performance!!! That drummer was straight fire!! Is his name Terry Williams? I’ve heard that and Withers? 🤔🥁🥁🔥. Just a magical performance by all! 👍👍🎧😎🎸🥁🕺🏻😂
Another great reaction to a great song. They are The Sultans of Swing. I'd like to hear your reaction to The Ventures. They started in the 50's and had a long career first in the US then in Japan. Listen to Wipeout from their Japan tour. I think around 1966. Ventures was one of the groups that paved the way and influenced a lot of guitarist. Walk Don't Run was one of their first hits. No singing, just instrumentals.
Well done as always my friend. An often underappreciated Dire Straits song is " Skate Away". Its what i call a total chill song. Stressed? Put on Skate Away.
Flashback! 🥳 Mark and Carlos were soooo good. Driving to a lake or on the Autobahn... Good times. Also Frank Zappa and The Eagles. The soundtrack of that time
Thank you. I love it, too. Dire Straits is my favorite band after Queen, but Mark Knopfler is my favorite guitar player. He's just fabulous, & his sound is unique, unmistakable. Oh, and Terry Williams is a beast on drums. I think he left the band after the Alchemy tour, don't know why, but wonder if his style was a bit heavier than what they wanted for their sound. He came on a you tube video recently & said he's "Still bangin' on the bongos like a chimpanzee." Did you know they played at Live Aid? Did a good job, with this song, Money For Nothing, (Sting joined them for that one) & I don't remember what else. Lucky for them they were on just before Queen. Have you heard Knopfler's soundtrack for Local Hero? That's one of my favorite movies. There is one song, "The Way It Always Starts" sung by Gerry Rafferty that is pretty wonderful. Maybe you would enjoy reacting to it. Maybe I've said all of this before. ;)
Much though I love Mark's playing in this, it's the part where David and and John Illsley get in sync together that just gets my head bopping and my lips grinning. So cool. And yeah, I agree, this is one of the best live performances I've ever seen.
@@masterchat1998 Thanks! I had no idea. I knew David left in 1980, but I had thought it was after Alchemy. I haven't seen much of him when he was younger, so couldn't pick him out that way.
Absolutely love your reactions. Keep it up mate! You would love some Bruce Springsteen ft Tom Morello with Ghost Of Old Tom Joad live @ rock 'n roll hall of fame! (the one with 5.5M views)
Dire Straits: where you think you're going! Phil Lynott (of Thin Lizzy)- Kings Call. Tribute to Elvis Presley. Mark Knopfler ( Dire Straits) on guitar!!!
You get a shiver in the dark It's a raining in the park but meantime- South of the river you stop and you hold everything A band is blowing Dixie, double four time You feel alright when you hear the music ring Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down Competition in other places Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound Way on down south Way on down south London town You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing They said an old guitar is all, he can afford When he gets up under the lights to play his thing And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright He can play the Honky Tonk like anything Savin' it up, for Friday night With the Sultans We're the Sultans of Swing Then a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band It ain't what they call Rock and Roll And the Sultans Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole Creole And then the man he steps right up to the microphone And says at last just as the time bell rings "Goodnight, now it's time to go home" Then he makes it fast with one more thing "We are the Sultans We are the Sultans of Swing"
I Guess you heard Dire Straits " Brothers in arms!!!!? Best Guitar solo ever! Beats Camel " Ice" live, Andy Latimer. Gary Moore: Still got THE blues for you. Genesis, Firth of Fifth, Steve Hackett. Guns and roses: November rain. Slash! Led Zeppelin: Stairway to heaven, or Kashmir!!
Alchemy and Van Morrison's It's Too Late to Stop Now are the only live albums I know of without overdubs. They are also numbers 3 and 1 respectively on my greatest albums of all time list.
Dire Straits are on that list of bands I wish I'd gotten to see but never did (The Clash, Led Zeppelin, Tool and Rancid live here too...) If you want to stay with Dire Straits...it's gotta be Brothers in Arms. Have you ever heard Wilco? Check out their song Impossible Germany... th-cam.com/video/WBpDs-BfwO0/w-d-xo.html
What you have copy pasted at the beginning of your video: "fair use such as criticism, comment [...]." This video cannot be categorized as fair use for a few reasons. You have not reacted in any way other than saying "ya, this good, it's amazing" at the end of the video for 15 seconds. You have not criticized the piece in any way. 12 minutes of your 14 minute video is just you playing the video with you silent. the first minute of your video is you promoting your channel. I'm sorry but copy pasting a "copyright dispenser"at the beginning of every video don't mean shit, there is barely any content in this video. Please have more substance when making a review. The song was fire tho, ngl.
Sorry! The drummer ruined the song for me. This is not the type of tune that requires Neil Peart type fills. Need to just chill in the pocket and let Mark go to work.
They never played this song the same way. It had a base rhythm and the band improvised the rest at each show to make the experience different for everyone that saw them (and those that saw them more than once). Think of it like a jazz jam session for a rock band. They had pre-planned timings, but a lot of the fill was on-the-spot...
You said it sounded like he was picking his guitar like a banjo, now I cannot unhear it.
spare a thought for the drummer...jesus....thats 100 workouts in one!....great job!
You can't get better than this.
Mark Knopfler plays without plectrum. Thus that Sound!!!
Love where Mark looks back at drummer with big old smile....like yeah!
I met George the other day. And he said he still knows alll the chords.
Effortless guitar playing n drummer is SUPER banging!
If you watch ⌚ 👀 sir mark he never plays a song the same way every time is so different but very magical ✨ 💖.
For 11 minutes that night... Mark and the boys truly turned into the Sultans of Swing...
THE DRUMER !!!!!!! WAUUUUU
Check out Telegraph Road
from their album Love over Gold
One of Dire Straits' very very best
Notice how after that little drum play they look at each other in awe😂
Mark Knopfler is one hell of a guitarist, but that drummer.. he's the shit right there.. that boy can play now!
WOW! Just another day at the office! What a RIDE! 👋👋👍👍
Glad you picked on the work that drummer was putting in.
I always thought the drum work on this song was underrated.
Mark Knopfler is one the most underrated guitarists of all time
And the rest of the band is bloody good too
Agreed. One of the best ever live performances.
Their sound just takes you to some other place, i can't describe it, but it's so distinctive and good...
I have a strong interest in sound quality of studio over live performance. This concert along with a few other exceptions turn that thinking upside down. Dire Straits was a band that really shined on live performances.
John Illsley on the bass, Terry Williams on drums amazing!!!
From the same show, Telegraph road. Alchemy tour, 6m views. Brilliant.
Great reaction :) more please

Drummer kicks ass in this vid.Two other great Dire Straits songs,Tunnel of love and Your latest trick.
Dire straits is one of my all time favorite bands with Mark knopfler being my favorite guitar players..
They've been one of the most iconic rock band abound 80's.
Mark Knopfler the lead guitarist is an excellent compositor and song writer. Up the straits 🔥
Drummer is Terry Williams . One of the best
Please, PLEASE, do "Telegraph Road" from the Alchemy tour....the outro solo will make you sweat. Follow that up with "Brothers in Arms" from the same tour - if it doesn't bring a tear, you have no soul.
I was there for this, Hammersmith Odeon, London - amazing performance throughout!
I've always liked this live performance of Sultans. I'm into live performances anyways.
Love this song and the feelings it evokes and the memories it brings. “That’s what a live performance is all about.” Yup.
The Recorded Version is beautiful being my Favorite of all time songs in my 70 years of life. The Live performance which is the Long Version is just too awesome to be real, but Truth is before our eyes. I have loved this song since I was a kid. This is the first time I have seen this live performance. Fantastic. By all members of the band. So good.
You might also like Dire Straits song "Brothers In Arms". This band is off the chain with ability & execution. Mark, the drummer, that bass line is killer too. Thanks for doing this sweetie... 💜💜
You're right; their sound is so unique. Feels like home to me (South Texas).
Love this performance...the drummer was killin it!!!
Good morning. Definitely spotlighted the instrumentals during the live in a way that the radio version couldn't.
I have been a fan for 30 plus years this reaction is the very reason I only watch your channels just fantastic my friend 👍
Wow, thank you
The 80s produced some of the best music. Every genre has its era but the 80s put out some great music. I’m bias of course going on 41 lol. Pop, rock, metal, rap, and yes real country. Facts!!!!
I left out some country singers of the 80’s. Willie Nelson, Keith Whitley, Hank Williams Jr, and Alabama.
Finger pickin' good - Mark Knopfler PREMIER LEAGUE !!!
‘Money For Nothing’ is a awesome song too. Thanks so much for doing this song.
Love this one. I actually learned my first dancing moves and rythm thx to dire straits. When i was a young boy my dad used to put make me put my feet above his feets and he would dance around ro Dire straits. I cherish those memories.
Wow! That was some 'stand and deliver' stuff.
Probably the best live album ever.!!
1 of the best driving tunes ever :)
Ahh! Another sound of my youth! Love Dire Straits :D Loved Skateaway and Private Investigations was my favourite track for a very long time!
Thank you for sharing
Yeah and "lady writer', romeo&juliet, iron hand, why worry, what it is, your latest trick, b.i.a. , going home and so on...👍🏼
Love the band song and performance!!! That drummer was straight fire!! Is his name Terry Williams? I’ve heard that and Withers? 🤔🥁🥁🔥. Just a magical performance by all! 👍👍🎧😎🎸🥁🕺🏻😂
Williams here , Withers on the original .

This is awesome...Love this song but never saw it performed live.
Flashback! 🥳 Mark and Carlos were soooo good. Driving to a lake or on the Autobahn... Good times. Also Frank Zappa and The Eagles. The soundtrack of that time
Love this song too! Great performance!
FYI, if you did not know already...Mark Knopfler did the music soundtrack to Rob Reiner's movie, "The Princess Bride" 😬
Thank you. I love it, too. Dire Straits is my favorite band after Queen, but Mark Knopfler is my favorite guitar player. He's just fabulous, & his sound is unique, unmistakable. He stayed just long enough to do the intro for Money for nothing. That's Terry Williams in the intro, but not the rest of the song
Much though I love Mark's playing in this, it's the part where David and and John Illsley get in sync together that just gets my head bopping and my lips grinning. So cool. And yeah, I agree, this is one of the best live performances I've ever seen.
That's not David. It's Hal Lindes.
@@masterchat1998 Thanks! I had no idea. I knew David left in 1980, but I had thought it was after Alchemy. I haven't seen much of him when he was younger, so couldn't pick him out that way.
Mark and Lyndsey Buckingham had a unique sound because they finger-picked!
Check out Tunnel of Love, Telegraph Road or Romeo and Juliet by them as well. Amazing.
Believe me, your work is much appreciated
Appreciate the live version but dang the studio version just gets me giddy😃
Just subbed. Greetings from Norway
As always a great reaction✌❣🇦🇺
Thank you so much 😀
Amazing!!!!
I don't think I have seen this, even though I knew the song and band! Great reaction, thank you!💜
Great reaction. Thanks
Telegraph Road is my favourite Dire Straits song. Reaction to that would be great.
Absolutely love your reactions. Keep it up mate! You would love some Bruce Springsteen ft Tom Morello with Ghost Of Old Tom Joad live @ rock 'n roll hall of fame! (the one with 5.5M views)
He's just so smooooth!
Tunnel of love, romeo and juliet, and telegraph road are great as well
Ayyyyeeee!!! ❤🔥❤
'Why aye man' 🎸🎶is another beautiful song by Mark 🔥
Dire Straits: where you think you're going!
Phil Lynott (of Thin Lizzy)-
Kings Call. Tribute to Elvis Presley. Mark Knopfler ( Dire Straits) on guitar!!!
thanks for Cal
Love your unadulterated reactions. Yeah man!
Hard to stay calm when this is playing!
You get a shiver in the dark
It's a raining in the park but meantime-
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie, double four time
You feel alright when you hear the music ring
Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down
Competition in other places
Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound
Way on down south
Way on down south
London town
You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords
Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
They said an old guitar is all, he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright
He can play the Honky Tonk like anything
Savin' it up, for Friday night
With the Sultans
We're the Sultans of Swing
Then a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band
It ain't what they call Rock and Roll
And the Sultans
Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole
Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
"Goodnight, now it's time to go home"
Then he makes it fast with one more thing
"We are the Sultans
We are the Sultans of Swing"
Please do pink floyd on the turning away live hd blow you away man guitar solo is to die for
I Guess you heard Dire Straits " Brothers in arms!!!!? Best Guitar solo ever!
Beats Camel " Ice" live, Andy Latimer.
Gary Moore: Still got THE blues for you.
Genesis, Firth of Fifth, Steve Hackett.
Guns and roses: November rain. Slash!
Led Zeppelin: Stairway to heaven, or Kashmir!!
No overdubs on this album according to Mark. Doubt there are many artists that can make that statement.

I'll check it out
Brothers In Arms is a stone cold classic. Gives me chills every time.
Are you from Baltimore?
Check out Telegraph Road live.
Good but not as good as the studio recording love that drama love Mark knopfler's guitar in by the way from my hometown
That's called chicken picking.
This song is such a classic, but the studio version is infinitely better...

You obviously have judged me on one video, I'll take what you have to say with a grain of salt, In other words I dont give shit!!!!
Not only does DramaSydE not give a shit, neither do his followers. You need to stop tapping on that keyboard and find a life 🤷♀️
