Borderlands is exactly the kind of IP that fits a low budget action comedy, with a cast of entirely unknown young actors. Never should have been a big budget cash grab, with a celebrity cast.
Yep. Or possibly a mini-series so some running jokes and reoccurring characters can be built up. Either way going cheap and making the most of a limited budget would fit the vibe better than summer blockbuster.

Not every movie needs to be just an "all-star cast." When 90% of the budget just goes to paying like 5 people, that last 10% has to stretch incredibly far on sets, costumes, writers, directing, film crews, support staff, editors, etc etc. This is so top heavy that I'm not surprised it couldn't stand on its own
I agree with what Ellen was saying around 11:00, some adaptations are good because they follow the story, just adjusted for film or tv run times, but then you get really big games where you just can't, and you just set them in the same universe and have a bunch of cameos and easter eggs. I have friends who write fanfiction, and the way they put it is that they don't want to play with the authors toys, they just want to play in his sandbox. Id be interested in an elder scrolls movie or series, for instance, and there is thousands of years and hundreds of in game stories you could follow, without ever touching the main quests and having to hear people moan about canon. In Mass Effect you get barebones about the First Contact War, we know how it started, how it ended, and the occasional anecdote. That is a framework you can start with, that still has plenty of room to move around for the director to take artistic license, as long as they aren't deliberately trying to bone canon. Borderlands is a story about an entire PLANET of treasure hunters, mercenaries, bandits, profiteers, and rogue corporations. All looking for a rumored McGuffin of great value and power, each with their own personal motivation from good to bad, from simple greed to thrill seeking. And the only thing they could think to do in that sandbox, was to play with the creators' toys, and badly at that.
That’s the perfect way to describe what I did with fanfic writing when I was younger. I used the universe as a sandbox because the rules were good and pre-defined. For example the Stargate universe. The stargates, the races, the lore. I avoided SG-1 as much as I could because I created my own characters for my SG-3 team. I eventually created my own original universes but yeah that can work.
Ellen being so politically correct and worrying so much about offending people that she couldn't even give a coherent and honest review, if you cant even give your own personal view on the movie you shouldn't even be there for the review, even if people see Andy's reaction and review as abrasive or rude at least he's being honest but the majority of people agree with him on this movie!

I think it speaks volumes that I've heard Andy tear into dozens of D-Coms and none of them have earned the level of vitriol he's showing here. It's impressive, really.
This is one of the most miscast movies I have ever seen. It's a celebrity cameo presented as a movie. It's a PG 13 rated movie of an M rated game. The props look neat but the CGI looks horrible.

Same sort of logic that lead to movies of Street Fighter (2) and Mortal Kombat, which regardless of your opinion on them have pretty much the default fighting game level of story (ie the bare minimum needed to explain why a sumo wrestler and a US Army guy are punching one another in the middle of a Chinese street.)
This is yet another example of how getting "big names" means absolutely nothing if the script and direction are bad. Particularly when a lot of those names don't fit the roles. If you're so aware that the actress playing a character doesn't fit for that character that you have to make multiple references to her being too old, then get someone who's a better fit. This whole movie feels like a case where they got the cast first, then tried to write the whole thing around that, and their only info about the source material was a few screenshots and spending five minutes browsing the wiki.
I kept bringing up the lack of Siren anything in the trailers. To the point of Liliths tattoos which would still be seen on her chest being completely absent. And knowing they tried making her being a Siren the surprise at the end is outrageously stupid. What were they actually thinking with this? They could have done so much better with even a fraction of effort to the already established universe from anyone involved.
listen, I haven't seen it nor have I played the games, but even I understand that taking a well-known character trait for anything and turning it into a plot twist for a famous titled movie adaptation of a book or game, where the majority of people who more likely to see it are the fans of that book or game and know the characters inside and out is a bad Idea.😅
In our screening - which was pretty full - there was *zero* response from the audience. No laughs, no movement, no idle conversation, nothing. It was actually kinda creepy.

I feel like the formula for Claptrap is: Step 1: Claptrap is REALLY annoying Step 2: Something comically violent or humiliating happens to him that you enjoy Step 3: Claptrap is fine afterwards so you don't have to feel bad that he got hurt/humiliated. I don't think it works as well when you sub "Claptrap is REALLY annoying" with "Claptrap is an asshole"
Also, CL4P-TP was depressing as hell in the Handsome Jack saga. There were times where you did want to root for him just as much as you'd want to punt that annoying little glorified doorknob
I think that the people who made Deadpool, or the One Piece live action could have made a good Borderlands movie. The entire cast could have been good, but not widely known actors: Saving money for other things, like awesome wacky guns. Also it should have been rated R.
Going the Deadpool approach instead of the Guardians approach actually makes a lot more sense for Borderlands. They both have this childish funny/not funny humor to it and being able to go crazy with the violence would fit perfectly. Just imagine a cold open for the movie where a group of psycho's get blown to bits by a grenade with crazy effects in the same style of Deadpool blowing himself up on those red barrels.
I know that Jamie Lee Curtis was supposed to appear in the Netflix adaption of One Piece and they couldn't do it because of scheduling conflicts. And now I hate the movie even more because for some reason I feel that she was made to perform in this when instead she could have been a badass doctor training a reindeer...

The image Andy painted of the entire audience grimly watching the mid-credits scene and then trudging out of the theater sounds funnier than anything in the film itself.
13:10 that could work. imagine the scene in the middle of a firefight, against dozens of people shooting at them, and everyone but 1 person is shooting and then they notice one of them is back there, just checking guns, and shooting at a wall before picking another to try. that could be a funny bit about the min maxing in the game. and as a one off, it would be a weird way to show how the diverse the guns are. but the movie would need to be smartly written to pull it off.
Look without even watching it. The movie was gonna be horrible the moment the actor for Tiny Tina publicly said she didn't give a shit about the game or the fans, but wanted to give a good performance for who she thought the character was. Which wasn't TIna. She willingly chose to not do any research.

I mean, they also changed Tina a lot it seems. Honestly, Tina was a character that felt like you needed protection from her, since she was such a chaotic character throwing around explosions. And now she is a character that they need to protect in a way? But I do agree that you need someone who understands the character and appeal to play her. Thats something I had to give the Wednesday show. Ortega did respect the character and tried to do her justice - seemingly against the will of some others connected to the show, which is insane to think about it. If you want to try to put the finger on the thing that the movie failed to do: Understanding. Nobody connected to it seems to understand or respect what Borderlands was, why it had appeal, and because of that they misscast most characters, writing doesn't fit the tone of the good games in the franchise, and moving it to PG13 also was a big disservice because you could not include gore or the humor. Even if they nailed the action part of the movie it would have been a rough sell - but they didn't even manage to do it anyway.

I work at a theater and I have to wait outside of the auditorium until the Claptrap mid-credit scene's over every time I go in to clean up for the next showing - after the two generous chances I've given to listen to it, it makes me irrationally angry, and I'm simply grateful that so few people are going to see it so that I can get done cleaning before the rest of the credits are over

They got a director known for NOT making comedies, the execs insisted it achieve at worst a PG13 rating ('cause rated R movies can't possibly fill theaters *cough* Deadpool & Wolverine *cough*), and apparently there wasn't a single laugh in the test preview but they decided that wasn't a problem.
Lmao, I haven't played any borderlands games so the only part of it I really know about is when that guy asks you to shoot him in the head and it's funny. That is such an indicator for the tone of the games, how would anyone think this is anything other than a recipe for an R rated comedy??
@@littlefurnace That's the quest where the bloke want's to off himself and tries to get you to do it for him. The first 2 aren't bad, the 3rd one falls a bit flat. Though the humour is quite particular it's not as bad as the jokes from "Funny" hollywood movies and tends to have at least some thought put into them.
Honestly, I think Borderlands would have been better as an animated movie/show, since the comic book aesthetic and cartoon violence are staples of Borderlands. As for the story, the first Tales from the Borderlands proves you can tell a wacky and goofy but meaningful and impactful story within the Borderlands universe. It could have been similar to Arcane and even used the voice actors from the games.
It’s wild to me that with all the acclaim Arcane and Edgerunners got, studios are apparently still dead-set on the idea of animation being second class, or a last resort if they can’t make live action work.
I feel like an animated Borderlands movie would have absolutely slapped. The stylized animation used in Spider-Verse, Arcane, and TMNT has become so popular as of late, and it would ABSOLUTLY compliment the video game's art style. This would have been a no-brainer, but instead, we got actors that don't resemble the characters at all, shotty effects that often look cheap, and an absolutely uninspired visual direction. That's not even to mention all of the other glairing issues with the movie.
I remember seeing Jack Black as Claptrap in the first trailer, and immediately thinking "Oh, they do not understand Borderlands" and lost any fleeting interest I had in the movie. Glad to hear that this assessment was spot on.

You knew it was going to be shit when you look at the cast list. The only person who fit the role in theory is Jack Black, all the others were just SO far away from their characters.
When I went to see Deadpool and Wolverine I saw a lot of trailers for movies I am genuinely excited for (Alien: Romulus and Beetlejuice 2 for example) but when I saw the newest trailer for Borderlands I lost even more faith than the miniscule amount I'd had before that point. The depiction of Tiny Tina alone told me no one with any sense of the games was behind the creative force of this film. Anthony wrote her based on Ash which is why she is such a perfect fit, and to see her turned into someone who freaks out when gloop hits her is just sad. Tina is a chaos gremlin, Roland goes from cocky kid to honorable leader, Claptrap just wants friends but is woefully incompatible with people; these traits are why we love them. (Especially Roland in BL2, they took the least favorite character to play as in BL1 and made him someone who everyone was sad to lose by the end.) I had no plans to see this movie and will definitely be staying away from it.
That's a good point. Alien: Romulus, Ergh those Facehuggers still creep me out. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Looks quite interesting and has vibes of the first one. Borderlands, no one seems interested, Claptrap is a bit meh, Tiny Tina looks Tame? Unenergetic? and Kevin Hart sticks out like a sore thumb for some reason.
this should've been an easy slam dunk R rated guardians of the galaxy with the crew just fighting their way to get the vault treasure. A bloody thrill ride by Eli but of course the studio came in and did half the movie themselves (always a great idea)
As soon as I heard they made the film pg-13 I knew it had no chance lol. Also, hot take probably but tiny Tina has always been my least favorite character and I see her as a main reason for the fall of the game series in general because the moneybags keep forcing her into borderlands media/ creating clones of her because she’s “popular”. I felt like they made borderlands 3 with her character trope in mind specifically for a lot of characters design philosophy, so when I saw her being forced into this film too I also knew it was doomed.
As soon as I heard that Anthony Burch (the lead writer for Borderlands 2) wasn’t gonna be involved, I knew it was dead in the water. He just posted a tweet saying “lol” and everyone knew he had just seen the film. Idk why original creators aren’t included more in the production process. Like all the good adaptations they gave examples of all had the original creators involved. It’s just the classic problem of the big heads not getting that things are good for a reason.
The casting choices were so weird for this film, everyone seemed just like 10-20 years too old for the role, Kevin Heart playing Roland, the straight man character, is just bizarre as a choice. Least now I know that I don't need to see the film ever, so thanks for that folks!
@@VeRG1L_47 Casting is more than just the director's choice (most times). Roth isn't listed as a producer or casting. He probably gave suggestions though. Regardless, Roth did write the film. That probably doomed the movie before they even started filming, even if it was perfectly cast. I can tell just from the plot and lines in the trailer the film isn't a faithful adaptation.
Borderlands 1 & 2 had some great gameplay and gunplay and a satisfying loot system. I've never thought of them and been like "Man, the plot was so good. I want to just watch all the characters for almost 2 hours." This movie was just a stupid idea from the get-go.
You guys know about what Randy Pitchford did to the original voice actor of clap trap? Dudes name was David Eddings, and Randy bullied him constantly. Ending with Randy attacking David in a hotel, then firing him. David apparently asked if he could voice clap trap again, to which Randy said sure but that they wouldn'tpay him. That's why clap traps voice changes in the commander Lilith dlc.

I've never played the games, but even I understand that Tiny Tina is not a child that needs to be protected. That's like the next batman movie, revolving around keeping Robin safe at all times.
I expected Jack Black to have SOME idea what Borderlands is about, since he has a pseudo-gaming channel, after all. Turns out that's not the case. I guess he has a channel just to stay relevant and the movie is just another payday for him and for the rest of the cast.

But because the writers like to human centipede themselves to huff their own undistilled farts, they wouldn't let that happen. So given we how we haven't heard anything, and shoot, not even a press interview, I highly doubt there was anyone who played the games, and was passionate to speak up.
Ellen's example about the most recent Tomb Raider could also apply to the Uncharted movie. They crammed storylines and themes from every game in the series to create an ungodly amalgamation
Hollywood typically doesn't understand why a game works so well and they don't care enough to listen to its creators. Nathan Drake as a character is so iconic, because he is essentially a muscular Indiana Jones that looks like an action hero that makes a lot of bad decisions that his girlfriend needs to fix which creates funny drama. What's even more important: He looks like a guy, who can do the stunts he does - because he has this physique and it works. When Tom Holland does these stunts and has these fight scenes in the Uncharted movie, it feels weird, because he looks like a teenager. And he behaves like a kid. He doesn't even know how to flirt to a girl and comes over super innocent - that doesn't fit Nathan Drake, who always had a side-chick before he settled for Elena. Uncharted was also a little bit of a bizarre movie, because Mark Wahlberg plays Sully, but looks more like Nathan Drake which confused the hell outta me :D
It's funny, I just so happened to be playing Borderlands 3 at the time when the first trailer for this film dropped. And my immediate reaction was: "Oh, the people who made this film have completely misunderstood the tone and humor of these games and these characters. This is not a Borderlands movie, this is a different movie wearing a poorly-fitted Borderlands costume." And then I promptly returned to playing Borderlands 3 and never looked back.
A Marcus opening narration to give exposition at the start followed by a stylised intro with music works as opening credits would transplant so well from game to film but its obvious no fan worked on this.
Randy Pitchford is probably just going to gaslight the Borderlands fans, saying they just 'didn't get it.' There's no way he didn't think this was his magnum opus or something.
Yeah thats many CEOs formula those who arent tough enough to protect their brand just their paycheck. The best thing to do is reward those who have a backbone and would make sure to do everything for the fans best interest. This movie should have never happened at all in this way.

I remember thinking that Hollywood had learned that lesson after they hired a mega-fan of Lord of the Rings to make the movie adaptation and it became a classic series of beloved movies that made billions of dollars. Then more terrible, cash-grabby adaptations of various fantasy IPs came out and I realized that, nah, they still haven't put 2 and 2 together. More recently, when "Last of Us" and "Fallout" absolutely slayed by sticking faithfully to the source material, I thought, "Oh, now they'll recognize the pattern and understand that appealing to the IP's core audience is worthwhile." And yet here we are again. Tbh, though, I'm not terribly surprised. I've worked with dumb, cash-grabby producers and I know their egocentrism and stupidity knows no bounds. I once worked as a designer on a game adaptation of "The Fantastic Four" and sat in meetings with producers who'd never read a single issue of the F4 comics and said things to us like, "Stretchy powers are stupid. Let's give Reed Richards twin AK-47s." One of the producers was so clueless about the IP that she kept referring to Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) as "she." At one point, we had one of the actual writers of the comics writing the game's story for us -- a big score that the team was very excited about -- but then the wife of the head or our studio decided she wanted to try her hand at writing, so they fired the Marvel writer and let our studio head's wife (who had no writing experience) try to write the story instead. I quit shortly after that. And good thing too; when the game finally came out about two years later, late and far over budget, the reviews were terrible (as they should've been) and the studio, after making a couple more terrible games, shut down.
To be fair, aimlessly wandering around mediocre gun fights while little to nothing really happens pretty much matches what I remember playing borderlands 1 to be like 15 years ago. Anyone with any sense would have just ignored BL1 and adapted the story from BL2 for use on the screen IMO.
I don't think you NEED to stick to source material to make a good adaptation. I think actually that's an important lessons that has made a lot of recent adaptations so much better. Don't worry about the material. Worry about the themes, the feelings it invokes, the vibes it puts off. If watching your movie makes me feel the same way the game does, then it did a good job. I don't CARE if it follows the same plot. Especially in a game like borderlands, which is not about it's plot. Especially the first game. It was a game defined by fun lovable characters doing crazy over the top bullshit with reckless abandon in a world with no value for the lives of anyone, yourself included. And NONE of that came across in this movie. If they'd stuck more closely to the plot but still didn't convey any of that, the movie would still be miserable.

If not that, then maybe focus on a new original group of Vault Hunters, and have it set roughly within the same continuity of the games. The games pretty much established that level of flexibility, so fans wouldn't question it too much.
This was delightful and a very enjoyable watch. Being less tied to gameplay/game structure and in a longer format really suits you all well and lets your 'improv ability' shine. More of this from to time, thank you :)

I'm 25 and I thought Lilith was younger than me... maybe it's just the way women are animated in video games and it was totally ambiguous. My bad. Now I feel guilty for being annoyed they didn't choose some young starlet to play her, I'm reinforcing Hollywood beauty standards..." Legitimately, all of that was running through my head when I saw the trailers. All of it. I felt bad & felt bad for feeling bad. But no, just turns out I was right and it was a colossal miscast. Wtf was going on with her wig, anyway? That's not even close to what it looks like when someone dyes their hair red. It reminds me of the most recent Descendants movie. Same wig quality as a children's film. Seriously.
If you're going for horror, my best suggestion would be to base it on the Borderlands 3 DLC Love and Tentacles. It's set on a Lovecraftian planet with possession and stuff
What I wish more people would acknowledge, is that "all star cast" does not = good film. Hollywood is really desperate to make us think so, and it's practically all they make these days. But tbh when I see yet another trailer for an unoriginal ip made into a "wacky comedy action adventure!" with an "all star cast!" my brain just shuts off. I cannot think of anything I'm less interested in 🙃

He can buy up the theaters himself. He should've been begging Lionsgate to hire better people and actually made sure the movie was accurate at best. From what I've seen out of the gameplay and researched from sites, it wasn't hard to adapt this correctly at all. His excuse about movies anf games being separate wasn't about it being a challenge, it was about him thinking he was better.
Things that were missing: Where was Rowan's turret? No reference to the corporation or their various guns. Was waiting the whole movie for someone to shoot an elemental Maliwan. It's a movie aimed at the same young generation that would go see Mario, yet it's a property that was PG 13 that came out several years ago.

The trailers looked like the studio had pics from the game, and basic wiki descriptions for the characters, and not one person who actually played the games.
Jane ought not feel too bad. I did the same during the first Thor movie... Nope, I'm not sorry. I also got mega bored watching The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and was bugging the dude I went with, leaning over after the first time we see them walking a vast expanse, and started whispering,"Is this the end? Is it over?" As in the second time we see them doing so. I was bored enough, and that just sent me over the edge. We got to the end, and I was like,"Finally! I'm sorry dude, but I was bored most of the time."
7:03 Just a bit of rose tinting going on with your memories there chum. Borderlands 2 was vibrant and colorful... compared to the 2010 era next-gen beige and grime but it still had the characteristic dinge and muting of the era.
It's peak Randy Pitchford to hire Eli Roth (not noted for his aversion to gore) to direct a film of game that is kind of violent (albeit in a very over the top silly way but still) and decide it needs to be a family film. I suppose we're just lucky he didn't accidentally upload that one film he left on that hard drive in medieval times. It's the kind of walking car crash move he'd do.
Making Tiny Tina just a kid who needs to be protected is a crime against her character. I'm so glad I never thought this would be any good and didn't waste my hard earned money.
Man, the *first thing* I was going to say when you started saying how bad this was is “Does Uwe Boll still make films?”, but even those were sometimes loveably crap, whereas what I just saw in the trailer was everything you said & probably worse… 😭😅🙈 I think we just had to get used to the idea they can’t all be good, after being gifted so many gems (still have to watch that Mario movie, but we all know it will never beat Super Mario ‘93)…
This movie is a throwback to the early 00's comic/videogame movie. Jane nailed the point I was feeling, after so much media proving that adaptations can be done and feel spectacular this shitshow feels particularly egregious.
I think they did well on borderlands I like how they added more story to it that if you played the borderlands 3 dlc you can put together what happened with the psychos the psychos where created by Hyperion to drive out DAHL but the plan basically back fired and also forced away Hyperion initially until Helios space station came back to observe pandora
Borderlands is exactly the kind of IP that fits a low budget action comedy, with a cast of entirely unknown young actors. Never should have been a big budget cash grab, with a celebrity cast.

That's a harsh review
Not every movie needs to be just an "all-star cast." When 90% of the budget just goes to paying like 5 people, that last 10% has to stretch incredibly far on sets, costumes, writers, directing, film crews, support staff, editors, etc etc. This is so top heavy that I'm not surprised it couldn't stand on its own
I agree with what Ellen was saying around 11:00, some adaptations are good because they follow the story, just adjusted for film or tv run times, but then you get really big games where you just can't, and you just set them in the same universe and have a bunch of cameos and easter eggs. I have friends who write fanfiction, and the way they put it is that they don't want to play with the authors toys, they just want to play in his sandbox. Id be interested in an elder scrolls movie or series, for instance, and there is thousands of years and hundreds of in game stories you could follow, without ever touching the main quests and having to hear people moan about canon. In Mass Effect you get barebones about the First Contact War, we know how it started, how it ended, and the occasional anecdote. That is a framework you can start with, that still has plenty of room to move around for the director to take artistic license, as long as they aren't deliberately trying to bone canon. Borderlands is a story about an entire PLANET of treasure hunters, mercenaries, bandits, profiteers, and rogue corporations. All looking for a rumored McGuffin of great value and power, each with their own personal motivation from good to bad, from simple greed to thrill seeking. And the only thing they could think to do in that sandbox, was to play with the creators' toys, and badly at that.
It's why dnd movie worked well they understood the setting and worked with that without having drizzt and minsk being the main character
That’s the perfect way to describe what I did with fanfic writing when I was younger. I used the universe as a sandbox because the rules were good and pre-defined. For example the Stargate universe. The stargates, the races, the lore.
I avoided SG-1 as much as I could because I created my own characters for my SG-3 team. I eventually created my own original universes but yeah that can work.

Same sort of logic that lead to movies of Street Fighter (2) and Mortal Kombat, which regardless of your opinion on them have pretty much the default fighting game level of story (ie the bare minimum needed to explain why a sumo wrestler and a US Army guy are punching one another in the middle of a Chinese street.)
This is yet another example of how getting "big names" means absolutely nothing if the script and direction are bad. Particularly when a lot of those names don't fit the roles. If you're so aware that the actress playing a character doesn't fit for that character that you have to make multiple references to her being too old, then get someone who's a better fit.
This whole movie feels like a case where they got the cast first, then tried to write the whole thing around that, and their only info about the source material was a few screenshots and spending five minutes browsing the wiki.
I kept bringing up the lack of Siren anything in the trailers. To the point of Liliths tattoos which would still be seen on her chest being completely absent. And knowing they tried making her being a Siren the surprise at the end is outrageously stupid. What were they actually thinking with this? They could have done so much better with even a fraction of effort to the already established universe from anyone involved.

Also, CL4P-TP was depressing as hell in the Handsome Jack saga. There were times where you did want to root for him just as much as you'd want to punt that annoying little glorified doorknob
I think that the people who made Deadpool, or the One Piece live action could have made a good Borderlands movie. The entire cast could have been good, but not widely known actors: Saving money for other things, like awesome wacky guns. Also it should have been rated R.
Going the Deadpool approach instead of the Guardians approach actually makes a lot more sense for Borderlands. They both have this childish funny/not funny humor to it and being able to go crazy with the violence would fit perfectly. Just imagine a cold open for the movie where a group of psycho's get blown to bits by a grenade with crazy effects in the same style of Deadpool blowing himself up on those red barrels.
I know that Jamie Lee Curtis was supposed to appear in the Netflix adaption of One Piece and they couldn't do it because of scheduling conflicts. And now I hate the movie even more because for some reason I feel that she was made to perform in this when instead she could have been a badass doctor training a reindeer...

The movie was gonna be horrible the moment the actor for Tiny Tina publicly said she didn't give a shit about the game or the fans, but wanted to give a good performance for who she thought the character was. Which wasn't TIna. She willingly chose to not do any research.

Thats something I had to give the Wednesday show. Ortega did respect the character and tried to do her justice - seemingly against the will of some others connected to the show, which is insane to think about it.
If you want to try to put the finger on the thing that the movie failed to do: Understanding. Nobody connected to it seems to understand or respect what Borderlands was, why it had appeal, and because of that they misscast most characters, writing doesn't fit the tone of the good games in the franchise, and moving it to PG13 also was a big disservice because you could not include gore or the humor. Even if they nailed the action part of the movie it would have been a rough sell - but they didn't even manage to do it anyway.
Walter Goggins said the save thing about Fallout and he’s nominated for awards because of it. It’s not necessarily a bad thing.

I work at a theater and I have to wait outside of the auditorium until the Claptrap mid-credit scene's over every time I go in to clean up for the next showing - after the two generous chances I've given to listen to it, it makes me irrationally angry, and I'm simply grateful that so few people are going to see it so that I can get done cleaning before the rest of the credits are over

The first 2 aren't bad, the 3rd one falls a bit flat.
Though the humour is quite particular it's not as bad as the jokes from "Funny" hollywood movies and tends to have at least some thought put into them.
Honestly, I think Borderlands would have been better as an animated movie/show, since the comic book aesthetic and cartoon violence are staples of Borderlands.
As for the story, the first Tales from the Borderlands proves you can tell a wacky and goofy but meaningful and impactful story within the Borderlands universe. It could have been similar to Arcane and even used the voice actors from the games.

I feel like an animated Borderlands movie would have absolutely slapped. The stylized animation used in Spider-Verse, Arcane, and TMNT has become so popular as of late, and it would ABSOLUTLY compliment the video game's art style. This would have been a no-brainer, but instead, we got actors that don't resemble the characters at all, shotty effects that often look cheap, and an absolutely uninspired visual direction. That's not even to mention all of the other glairing issues with the movie.
I remember seeing Jack Black as Claptrap in the first trailer, and immediately thinking "Oh, they do not understand Borderlands" and lost any fleeting interest I had in the movie. Glad to hear that this assessment was spot on.

When I went to see Deadpool and Wolverine I saw a lot of trailers for movies I am genuinely excited for (Alien: Romulus and Beetlejuice 2 for example) but when I saw the newest trailer for Borderlands I lost even more faith than the miniscule amount I'd had before that point. The depiction of Tiny Tina alone told me no one with any sense of the games was behind the creative force of this film. Anthony wrote her based on Ash which is why she is such a perfect fit, and to see her turned into someone who freaks out when gloop hits her is just sad. Tina is a chaos gremlin, Roland goes from cocky kid to honorable leader, Claptrap just wants friends but is woefully incompatible with people; these traits are why we love them. (Especially Roland in BL2, they took the least favorite character to play as in BL1 and made him someone who everyone was sad to lose by the end.)
I had no plans to see this movie and will definitely be staying away from it.

this should've been an easy slam dunk R rated guardians of the galaxy with the crew just fighting their way to get the vault treasure. A bloody thrill ride by Eli but of course the studio came in and did half the movie themselves (always a great idea)
As soon as I heard they made the film pg-13 I knew it had no chance lol. Also, hot take probably but tiny Tina has always been my least favorite character and I see her as a main reason for the fall of the game series in general because the moneybags keep forcing her into borderlands media/ creating clones of her because she’s “popular”. I felt like they made borderlands 3 with her character trope in mind specifically for a lot of characters design philosophy, so when I saw her being forced into this film too I also knew it was doomed.
I lost all faith in this adaptation the moment I learned Eli Roth was the director.

As soon as I heard that Anthony Burch (the lead writer for Borderlands 2) wasn’t gonna be involved, I knew it was dead in the water. He just posted a tweet saying “lol” and everyone knew he had just seen the film. Idk why original creators aren’t included more in the production process. Like all the good adaptations they gave examples of all had the original creators involved. It’s just the classic problem of the big heads not getting that things are good for a reason.

The casting choices were so weird for this film, everyone seemed just like 10-20 years too old for the role, Kevin Heart playing Roland, the straight man character, is just bizarre as a choice. Least now I know that I don't need to see the film ever, so thanks for that folks!
Tiny Tina looks horribly miscast. Cate Blanchett is a little old, but she's an amazing actress so I'd give that one a pass.

@@VeRG1L_47 Casting is more than just the director's choice (most times). Roth isn't listed as a producer or casting. He probably gave suggestions though. Regardless, Roth did write the film. That probably doomed the movie before they even started filming, even if it was perfectly cast. I can tell just from the plot and lines in the trailer the film isn't a faithful adaptation.
Borderlands 1 & 2 had some great gameplay and gunplay and a satisfying loot system. I've never thought of them and been like "Man, the plot was so good. I want to just watch all the characters for almost 2 hours." This movie was just a stupid idea from the get-go.
You guys know about what Randy Pitchford did to the original voice actor of clap trap? Dudes name was David Eddings, and Randy bullied him constantly. Ending with Randy attacking David in a hotel, then firing him. David apparently asked if he could voice clap trap again, to which Randy said sure but that they wouldn'tpay him. That's why clap traps voice changes in the commander Lilith dlc.

I've never played the games, but even I understand that Tiny Tina is not a child that needs to be protected. That's like the next batman movie, revolving around keeping Robin safe at all times.
I expected Jack Black to have SOME idea what Borderlands is about, since he has a pseudo-gaming channel, after all. Turns out that's not the case. I guess he has a channel just to stay relevant and the movie is just another payday for him and for the rest of the cast.

But because the writers like to human centipede themselves to huff their own undistilled farts, they wouldn't let that happen. So given we how we haven't heard anything, and shoot, not even a press interview, I highly doubt there was anyone who played the games, and was passionate to speak up.

Hollywood typically doesn't understand why a game works so well and they don't care enough to listen to its creators.
Nathan Drake as a character is so iconic, because he is essentially a muscular Indiana Jones that looks like an action hero that makes a lot of bad decisions that
his girlfriend needs to fix which creates funny drama. What's even more important: He looks like a guy, who can do the stunts he does - because he has this physique and it works. When Tom Holland does these stunts and has these fight scenes in the Uncharted movie, it feels weird, because he looks like a teenager. And he behaves like a kid. He doesn't even know how to flirt to a girl and comes over super innocent - that doesn't fit Nathan Drake, who always had a side-chick before he settled for Elena.
Uncharted was also a little bit of a bizarre movie, because Mark Wahlberg plays Sully, but looks more like Nathan Drake which confused the hell outta me :D

It's funny, I just so happened to be playing Borderlands 3 at the time when the first trailer for this film dropped. And my immediate reaction was:
"Oh, the people who made this film have completely misunderstood the tone and humor of these games and these characters. This is not a Borderlands movie, this is a different movie wearing a poorly-fitted Borderlands costume."
And then I promptly returned to playing Borderlands 3 and never looked back.

A Marcus opening narration to give exposition at the start followed by a stylised intro with music works as opening credits would transplant so well from game to film but its obvious no fan worked on this.

I remember thinking that Hollywood had learned that lesson after they hired a mega-fan of Lord of the Rings to make the movie adaptation and it became a classic series of beloved movies that made billions of dollars. Then more terrible, cash-grabby adaptations of various fantasy IPs came out and I realized that, nah, they still haven't put 2 and 2 together. More recently, when "Last of Us" and "Fallout" absolutely slayed by sticking faithfully to the source material, I thought, "Oh, now they'll recognize the pattern and understand that appealing to the IP's core audience is worthwhile." And yet here we are again.
Tbh, though, I'm not terribly surprised. I've worked with dumb, cash-grabby producers and I know their egocentrism and stupidity knows no bounds. I once worked as a designer on a game adaptation of "The Fantastic Four" and sat in meetings with producers who'd never read a single issue of the F4 comics and said things to us like, "Stretchy powers are stupid. Let's give Reed Richards twin AK-47s." One of the producers was so clueless about the IP that she kept referring to Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) as "she." At one point, we had one of the actual writers of the comics writing the game's story for us -- a big score that the team was very excited about -- but then the wife of the head or our studio decided she wanted to try her hand at writing, so they fired the Marvel writer and let our studio head's wife (who had no writing experience) try to write the story instead. I quit shortly after that. And good thing too; when the game finally came out about two years later, late and far over budget, the reviews were terrible (as they should've been) and the studio, after making a couple more terrible games, shut down.

To be fair, aimlessly wandering around mediocre gun fights while little to nothing really happens pretty much matches what I remember playing borderlands 1 to be like 15 years ago.
Anyone with any sense would have just ignored BL1 and adapted the story from BL2 for use on the screen IMO.
I don't think you NEED to stick to source material to make a good adaptation. I think actually that's an important lessons that has made a lot of recent adaptations so much better. Don't worry about the material. Worry about the themes, the feelings it invokes, the vibes it puts off. If watching your movie makes me feel the same way the game does, then it did a good job. I don't CARE if it follows the same plot. Especially in a game like borderlands, which is not about it's plot. Especially the first game. It was a game defined by fun lovable characters doing crazy over the top bullshit with reckless abandon in a world with no value for the lives of anyone, yourself included. And NONE of that came across in this movie. If they'd stuck more closely to the plot but still didn't convey any of that, the movie would still be miserable.
@@anthonybowman3423While I get what you are saying, and the least they could do was stick as close to the source material without taking too many creative libraries. If not that, then maybe focus on a new original group of Vault Hunters, and have it set roughly within the same continuity of the games. The games pretty much established that level of flexibility, so fans wouldn't question it too much.
This was delightful and a very enjoyable watch. Being less tied to gameplay/game structure and in a longer format really suits you all well and lets your 'improv ability' shine. More of this from to time, thank you :)
Yes, I know the actors were all big names, but I found the casting to be quite off. Most of the casting choices feel like actors picked for their popularity rather than how well they fit the role. The trailer alone was enough to make me realize I did not want to watch it.

Legitimately, all of that was running through my head when I saw the trailers. All of it. I felt bad & felt bad for feeling bad. But no, just turns out I was right and it was a colossal miscast.

If you're going for horror, my best suggestion would be to base it on the Borderlands 3 DLC Love and Tentacles. It's set on a Lovecraftian planet with possession and stuff
What I wish more people would acknowledge, is that "all star cast" does not = good film. Hollywood is really desperate to make us think so, and it's practically all they make these days. But tbh when I see yet another trailer for an unoriginal ip made into a "wacky comedy action adventure!" with an "all star cast!" my brain just shuts off. I cannot think of anything I'm less interested in 🙃

He can buy up the theaters himself. He should've been begging Lionsgate to hire better people and actually made sure the movie was accurate at best. From what I've seen out of the gameplay and researched from sites, it wasn't hard to adapt this correctly at all. His excuse about movies anf games being separate wasn't about it being a challenge, it was about him thinking he was better.
I'm not disappointed because I already got my ideal Borderlands movie. It's made by Telltale Games and it's both awesome and memorable.

The trailers looked like the studio had pics from the game, and basic wiki descriptions for the characters, and not one person who actually played the games.
Jane ought not feel too bad. I did the same during the first Thor movie... Nope, I'm not sorry. I also got mega bored watching The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and was bugging the dude I went with, leaning over after the first time we see them walking a vast expanse, and started whispering,"Is this the end? Is it over?" As in the second time we see them doing so. I was bored enough, and that just sent me over the edge. We got to the end, and I was like,"Finally! I'm sorry dude, but I was bored most of the time."
7:03 Just a bit of rose tinting going on with your memories there chum. Borderlands 2 was vibrant and colorful... compared to the 2010 era next-gen beige and grime but it still had the characteristic dinge and muting of the era.
It's peak Randy Pitchford to hire Eli Roth (not noted for his aversion to gore) to direct a film of game that is kind of violent (albeit in a very over the top silly way but still) and decide it needs to be a family film.
I suppose we're just lucky he didn't accidentally upload that one film he left on that hard drive in medieval times. It's the kind of walking car crash move he'd do.

Man, the *first thing* I was going to say when you started saying how bad this was is “Does Uwe Boll still make films?”, but even those were sometimes loveably crap, whereas what I just saw in the trailer was everything you said & probably worse… 😭😅🙈 I think we just had to get used to the idea they can’t all be good, after being gifted so many gems (still have to watch that Mario movie, but we all know it will never beat Super Mario ‘93)…

I think they did well on borderlands I like how they added more story to it that if you played the borderlands 3 dlc you can put together what happened with the psychos the psychos where created by Hyperion to drive out DAHL but the plan basically back fired and also forced away Hyperion initially until Helios space station came back to observe pandora
