Well, a lot of this would have made more sense if you had seen Star Wars before this but hey, crap happens, right? No big deal. LOL
The scene they first met Yogurt is a reference to the main character Dorothy first meeting the wizard in The Wizard of Oz.
The Vulcan neck pinch scene is a reference to Star Trek.
The scene with the people crawling out of Mega Maid's nose and the apes who say "There goes the planet." is a reference to the original Planet of the Apes.

So the reason for the merchandise scene is George Lucas gave Mel the Okay to Parody Starwars but he was not allowed to make any merchandise for it. He didnt want people confusing Spaceballs toys with starwars toys. So that is why Mel came up with the merchandising scene.

Consider that the special effects company that did Back to the Future was founded to make the first Star Wars film in 1977, and all of the modern techniques they invented were by necessity in order to bring the ideas to the screen. It's groundbreaking but also it's a timeless story of fall from grace and redemption.

When you watch Star wars you should watch it in theatrical order. So you want to start with episode 4 a New Hope from 1977. The original trilogy is episode 4 5 and 6. The prequel movies are episode 1 2 and 3. It's up to you how you watch the movies but most people watch them in the order they were released.

  • @BigGator5
    @BigGator5 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Hey, I'm glad that you are going to watch the Star Wars movies. If you are going to watch them, might I suggest the following Satisfying Order for your pleasure:
    Episode IV: A New Hope
    Episode V: Empire Strikes Back
    Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Episode II: Attack Of The Clones
Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith
    (Stand Alone) Rogue One
Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi
And from there, watch whatever you want.
Again, this is just a suggestion. You can take my suggestion or not. However you will greatly appreciate the order that I suggested afterwards. The plot twist in Episode III is more impactful and Episode VI makes a more satisfactory emotional ending, because it is the end of the story. This also solves the prequel paradox by making all these movies just one story. I can't say anything else or I would go into spoilers. Now some other people will suggest the Release Order. I can't stop you from watching that order, but the "because we watch them in that order" is a super weak reason. My "Satisfying Order" serves a narrative purpose (something the gatekeeping Release Order purists can't say) and you'll be watching all of movies anyway. If I could blank my mind and watch these movies fresh, that's the order I would love to watch them in.

    • @TSIRKLAND
      @TSIRKLAND 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I've seen this order suggested, and as someone who did watch them in release order because that's the only order you can watch them in when they're released, I can see some logic in it. I'm not opposed to it. It works, as a flash-back.
I still lean toward release order however, because that's how the story was told. Call-backs and flash-forwards work best when they're planned in advance; when they're ret-conned in, it can be more difficult to decipher, sometimes.
Also: for the purpose of understanding "Space Balls," the original trilogy is all there was at the time, so they work as a unit.
To understand the pop culture phenomenon, experiencing them in release order helps one understand what the movie-going public went through; how each new film affected pop culture; where each character came from; how the prequels coming later were their own experience.
So in a narrative sense: I can agree with your order. It does have a narrative flow to it that makes sense. I respect that.
As a film and pop culture experience, I still suggest release order. It packages the stories into cohesive units.
It depends on which is more important to you as a viewer; which kind of experience you're hoping to have, or what you want to get out of it.
      P.S.
I hope we can agree that watching them in episode order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 is a big mistake. Nobody should watch them that way.

    • @BigGator5
      @BigGator5 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

TSIRKLAND ...Thank you for looking logically at my Satisfying Order. I think that this order turns both trilogies into one whole saga, with Rogue One bridging both together seamlessly, and you can see my vision here.
I agree that the Episode Order is a terrible idea.
Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍

These multiple references are genius, but that people can enjoy the humor even without recognizing these references is absolute comedic genius.

Spaceballs spoofed a lot of movies.
On the desert planet, Dark Helmet was wearing a Pith Helmet of a sort. These were favored by explorers back in the day because they were intended to keep the head cool in hot climates.
In the Alien scene, the alien was spoofing Michigan J Frog, a Loony Tunes character. He was a kind of cursed frog who could sing and dance, but only in front of whoever found the box it was kept in. Always just before anyone else could see it, it would revert back to a regular frog.
The "what a world" Yogurt was saying was a throwback to the final words of the wicked witch in "The Wizard of Oz".

Just remeber to watch Star wars in the order they were made. 4,5,6 1,2,3. You can watch Rogue One it's basicially 3 and a half. But you can forget the rest. Don't worry Star Wars has only been around since 1977. So you're not late to the party or anything😂😂😂

This isn't my favourite Mel Brooks film. It's very 80s, but I find a lot of it funny being born at the beginning of the 80s and the theme song, written by Mel Brooks and performed by a 60s do-wop/Motown group called The Spinners is great and perfectly placed in the movie. Mel writes all the songs for his movies.

I understand your skepticism about Star Wars. In 1977, despite being an avid Star Trek fan, Star Wars held no interest for me until I saw it for the first time *3 months* into its first run in the cinema. The promotional cast interviews at the time did not bill the original movie as "good" but rather as "fun". I remember Harrison Ford saying "How much fun? (Holds arms out wide) THIS much fun!". The movie was a really good time, I watched it several times, and I've seen most of the subsequent films on opening day ever since (sometimes spending the prior night in line with friends). The story is great; the original special effects using models and matte paintings were spectacular in the day, and they're far better in the later editions with modern CGI.
If you decide to watch the Star Wars movies, I recommend seeing them in the original release order (episodes 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9) but you might also consider watching Rogue One before episode 4. If you decide to watch them in episodic order, consider watching Solo, then Rogue One, between episodes 3 and 4.
Spaceballs also parodied other movies. One that some may not recognize is the original 1968 production of "Planet of the Apes". Also an excellent story and movie, highly recommended. (Rated 8.0/10 on imdb, compared to 5.7/10 for the 2001 remake. The Rotten Tomatoes ratings of the 1968 movie are also much, much better than the remake.)

I would totally watch your reactions to (most of) the Star Wars films. I would start with the first film of the first completed trilogy ('Episode IV: A New Hope" from 1977) and see if you want to continue.
The chances are high that you both would really like Star Wars - for the same reasons that you enjoyed Spaceballs. While Star Wars isn't a straight-up comedy, it does have a large number of funny moments. It also has characters that you'll "recognize" from Spaceballs, and these same characters are created from classic fairy tale tropes: The outlaw hero who is 'rough around the edges,' A princess who doesn't fit in with who she's "supposed to be," a wizard who mentors the hero, a powerful gangster who dogs the outlaw hero, a farm boy longing to go off to seek his fortune, two iconic robot characters who function as an 'Odd Couple'...
I think people who haven't watched any Star Wars FILMS, can be intimidated for two reasons: 1) there are a lot of SW films and other TV shows now, so it feels intimidating. The trick is to avoid "either/or" thinking: "Either I ignore everything Star Wars, or I have to do it all..." and no, you don't. In 1977, there was just this one film - and its main creator, Writer/Director George Lucas, projected that the film would be "not all that successful" (Not because it wasn't good, but because it was so different from what people were used to then.) Pretend that there's only one film, see it, and see if you want to continue. ...The second potential 'turn off' is the "space" setting. The thing to realize is that the Star Wars stories have a number of levels. The 'Space' setting with amazing tech, aliens and so on, is very cool, but it's only the top, most superficial layer. The layers 'underneath' are things that most people can strongly relate to. :)

First, I'm not putting spoilers in here (well, other than to mention two people in a movie who have a conversation, which I'm not even going to say what the conversation is about).
"...we've gotta watch Star Wars series..."
Well given this movie is a spoof of Star Wars (mostly)... yeah, it'd have helped... a lot. In fact, this movie makes references to a _lot_ of other movies. If you want to get all the references in here you'd need to watch The Wizard of Oz, Planet of the Apes (1968), Alien, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Fortunately, all of those movies are good enough in their own right to be worth watching. You'd _also_ need to be vaguely aware of the original Star Trek (watching any Star Trek movie would do it, I recommend the even-numbered ones since they're the _good_ ones, and with 2 and 4 being your best bets), Rambo (a few memes would do it or the first movie), as well as see a poster of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
If you _are_ going to watch the Star Wars movies, first... do yourself a favor, if you can, and get the 'Despecialized editions'. These are fan reconstructions of the _original_ movies (well, from 1981 and on when "Star Wars" was relabeled "Star Wars: A New Hope") before the prequels came out. When the prequels came out, Lucasfilm _changed_ the original movies to make them fit in with the prequel trilogy better _and_ added 'deleted scenes' and other stuff which, in many parts, is just fine, but there are _several_ instances where the movies are made _much worse_ with the inclusions and changes. Also, maybe watch them in "Machete order" (named after an internet user who came up with it): A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi until Darth Vader and Luke finish their direct conversation, then you can decide if you want to watch Phantom Menace (not really needed, and it's the worst of the three prequels mainly because of one character), then move on to Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith before going back to where you left off in Return of the Jedi. (Basically treat the prequel trilogy as a sort of 'Very Long Flashback'). I might shift it a bit and watch "Rogue One" before "A New Hope". Outside of that, release order (the first three movies, then the prequels, etc) is good, or Rogue One, then the originals, then prequels. Whether you watch the sequels or not is up to you. I hate them. I hate them so very, very much. I find the main character is a total Mary-Sue, which makes her uninteresting.
"...I'm guessing you can get Star Wars everything..."
Quite a bit. Sheets, certainly, were popular, along with toys. Part of what allowed this movie to be made was that there would be no merchandizing of Spaceballs itself. That is, you _can't_ get Spaceballs toys, shirts, etc, unless someone makes them themselves. Additionally, they couldn't make the main character (Lone Star) too close to Han Solo in look, so they made him look like Indiana Jones instead (another creation of George Lucas).
"...but what if I don't like [Star Wars]..."
I'd actually be surprised if you didn't. I don't think you'll think of them as the greatest movies of all time or anything (the hype over them is overblown, because _nothing_ can be as good as the hype surrounding those movies). At the same time... they're fun. I think you'd like them. Just go in expecting them to suck _way_ more than the hype suggests and you'll be fine. They are, in the end, just movies. It's just that _when they came out_ they were something no one had ever seen before.
    "...not again?..."
If you go back to the original Alien movie (1979), one guy has an alien burst out of him. The actor who played that part (John Hurt) ... is the _same guy_ who plays it in this movie, so... it's happening _again._
    "...Mel Brooks..."
He did a number of funny movies. Blazing Saddles is, indeed, one. You might also like "Young Frankenstein", "Robin Hood: Men in Tights", "The Producers", "History of the World: Part 1", and "High Anxiety". It would help, before watching High Anxiety, if you watched a few Hitchcock films, specifically "Vertigo", "Spellbound", and "The Birds" (though a _lot_ more of Hitchcock's movies are referenced in it). I haven't seen Spellbound, but Vertigo is... okay... and The Birds is quite good.
    "...they're gonna be so mad..."
I'm not. You're right, it's hard to avoid spoilers.
"...because [Star Wars] is about space..."
It's really not. It's a fantasy movie that takes place in space. You liked _this_ movie, and it wasn't _about_ space, it just takes place _in_ space. It's a comedy.
One thing you might take from this, _and_ Lord of the Rings (which you mention), is that genres of movie (Westerns, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, etc) can't tell you if you'll like the movie. What makes a movie, a _story,_ actually _good_ is the story itself, not the setting. I'm not a big fan of Westerns, for instance, and yet I can name a few that are good enough to watch _even though_ I don't like most of them. What makes Star Wars good isn't the lasers, the lightsabers, the ships, the robots, or any of those sci-fi trappings, it's the _people_ and the _story_ that make it good, the _interactions._
"...people get so angry if you're not converted..."
I won't. Like whatever you like! I'm _suggesting_ Star Wars because, given what I've seen of the sorts of things you liked, I think you'll actually like Star Wars. Not that you'll think it's the greatest thing ever, just that it'll be fun. More the original trilogy than the rest.
    Great reaction!
    Have a nice day!
