I was on an offshore drilling rig off the coast of Angola the first time I heard this song. In 45 seconds I reduced to tears. Back in 2000, my father lost his battle with his demon and died of cirrhosis. Ever since that time, I stayed angry at him for the torment his alcohol abuse inflicted on his family. This song slapped my face and made me realize that nothing positive was coming from me holding on to that anger for decades and understanding that none of us is without imperfections. My family deserves better. I forgive you dad!
His hands shaking while playing the piano... good Lord. Shows that none of us are above grief. And he still gave a beautiful performance through his pain. Just amazing, thank you James
Yes the song sounds like his dad died. His emotions are real from when he was preparing to say goodbye. The father miraculously got a kidney transplant and survived. But the song hits with people who have lost a loved one. It's beautiful.
My dad was an imperfect man, with an imperfect son. The line "I know your mistakes and you know mine" hits me hard. My dad died in hospice or cancer, and I was fortunate enough to be by his side when he did, and this song speaks to me like nothing else, like it was written just for us. I love you dad, and thank you James.
When he got to the part where he says don't be scared, my heart cracked. My dad died suddenly and I wonder if he was scared as we tried to help him. I'm sorry for your loss.
I was brought to tears when i first heard this, my father passed away from cancer and few year before he died we were getting really close, so yeah this was hard to listen to
Same for me, Lost my Dad 2wks ago to Cancer, The 4 days at his bedside hit me hard my hand on his heart then it stopped. I won’t forget those days, We talked & Reconciled. He’s at peace now
If it makes you miss him more it also makes you remember him more , for that we owe James alot. My go to song when I want to be close with my dad who left me a year ago .
James doesn't need auto tuning his voice is pure and raw. A pure talent he has not been given the opportunity he deserves. He writes from his soul and life experiences. Listen to no Bravery he was on the front line during the Kosovo war. How many singer/song writers have done that!!!
This song just shows how powerful a bond there is and should be between a father and a son. I will always get chills listening to this song thinking about my father and about my son.
Iam Tongi brought me here due to his emotional performance on multiple occasions so i was curious. I find this and i see James literally shaking while playing this live.... Whew! You don't have to be an empath to feel either the original or any cover, this is a powerful song...
You can see the pain in his face as he sings, clearly even though he has sung this song hundreds of times at this point, it even strikes a chord for him ! What a songwriter and story teller ! Truly just one of those once in a lifetime songwriters
A staggering feat of emotional control. I can't get through any version of this song, whether it be live, video or album, without being in bits. Mr Blunt you have my utmost respect and admiration for crafting such a beautiful and poignant song x
I don't know how he could sing this live. I can't even listen to it without crying and I don't cry. Ever. 😢 Absolutely beautiful song. Respect for being able to sing it.
Seeing someone put so much into a song not only vocally but physically seeing the emotion (the shaking) is just overwhelming. This is truly a song you can feel. THIS is how you connect with others by music and, cannot help but get emotional too. Love it.
"We're just 2 grown man saying goodbye", that phrase hit so damn dip, I used to have long conversations with my father about death, his last years weren't his bests, he distanced himself from the family and made some huge mistakes, but in the end, we were 2 grown man saying goodbye, farewell dear old man
This is the song we chose to carry dad from the funeral service to the hearse before his burial. I’m not emotional whatsoever (normally), I didn’t think I had a heart, but pretty sure the ache I get in my chest when this tune plays means something is going down…(spoke to Dorothy and I’m not the Tin Man…) Miss you Dad x
My brother is dying from cancer and each moment he is getting closer to the end of his life. Treatment has been stopped as he is too weak to cope with chemotherapy. It’s no longer months. I’m now standing guard and responsible for chasing the monsters away … toughest thing I’ve ever had to do but it’s nothing compared to what my beautiful brother has to do, accept and face everyday. Thank you for such a beautiful song, we both share a love of music and both love this.
Im a 50yr old who hardly cries, my partner is a professional singer of 40yrs so ive seen some emotional songs, but, my dad is ailing in his 80s now, i worry about him daily....this song turns me to blubber...amazing how he can hold it together..what a great song
Man, he plays it so raw. James Blunt will be eligible for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2030. He has made several hits over a 15 year period, and still going strong. It would be well deserved!
One of the most emotion pricking songs ever written, simple and yet hauntingly beautiful, played and sung to perfection. A masterclass in song writing, executed perfectly.
I found this song after my grandfather died, i never met my father but he stepped up and raised me as his own. I wasn't his son but that great man treated me as his own and gave me the mindset and strength to be a great man god bless
Such heartfelt emotion in that performance. This is why James is such an utterly brilliant artist. He puts his heart and soul into every song and performance. Mesmerising.
My Father passed 2 days before this post. Nov. 24 I posted this to my FB the 23rd. We had bumps in the road of life but, we were good for several years leadng up to Cancer taking him. I love this song.
My father almost past away in 2014 he's still with us today but this song still makes me aware that life is precious and how important having a father is in your lifr
This song kills me every time. Went through this with my Dad. James has to have played this piece so, so many times, yet you can see his hands shaking while he plays. 😢
I love the fact that no matter how many times he sings that song he still gets emotional and his eyes to get watery. Which shows how much that song means to him.
I saw this at the time I have just lost my Dad on New Years Day just managed to listen too it in the last coupe of days…this is my song too you dad I Love You and hope I always make you proud….
It's been 20 years since I lost my dad and this song always makes me feel like that 13 year old kid who's world just imploded one summer morning out of nowhere, then brings up amazing memories I haven't thought of in years
You can see it in nearly every song of him. I believe every single word and note that comes out of his mouth. Never ever was a song enough to let a tear leave my eyes.... 1minute of james singing monsters and my eyes are kinda sweaty.
Lost my dad to colorectal cancer back in 2019...and I just came across this song through William Tongi of AGT. This song really hits me deep, but at the same time reassuring that my dad is at a better place...
One of the truest live performances I've ever seen. At the tip of breaking down by the overflow of memories of a loved one while you play the song you wrote about it all perfectly while emotionally performing it trembling. ❤ thank you James for sharing your talent.
How the hell can he perform this song like this over and over again!! every time I listen to it I feel like I die a little. I can't imagine how this impacts him 😥
Regardless of a man’s age they will always tell you how much their dad means. I’m lucky that my dad is still alive but I’ve never met his dad, my grandad and I can’t imagine how my dads life was growing up without a father figure. My dad is incredible and I couldn’t ask for a better one. I love him
Lost my dad just over two years ago. This hits me everytime I have heard it. The pain of knowing someone you love is fading away and there is absolutely nothing you can do to stop it. You can only be by their side and look after them as they did you.
One year since I lost my father, so much connection to this. I play and sing it on my own just for me and him to be back in the room together. Thanks to James blunt .
Heard this song just recently having lost my father to cancer almost 12 years ago this broke me in half. Such raw human emotion and the lyrics just wow
The sheer emotion coming from his voice, motion and heart makes this song so much harder to hear, every single time he sings this live the emotions coming from him never weaken. This song means so much to him and so many people listening
I don’t think James would ever be able to sing this song and not get emotional. Even though his father survived its nearly impossible not to relive the helplessness of believing/ knowing that a person you love is dying and trying to let them go in peace when everything in you is begging them to stay.
And ofc the inevitable has only been postponed. No-one lives forever. They, like most people, are going to have to go through it for real, and sooner rather than later.
Can’t stop listening to this song since my Dad passed away with Cancer 2wks ago 😢, British Veteran🇬🇧
RIP sorry for your loss ❤
🙏
Sorry for your loss.
Bless yous both bro🤜🤛
Sorry for your loss 🙏🏻
So emotional. He’s actually shaking while playing the piano. Amazing performance. So…human.
He is just unbelievable. He strikes the balance between a passionate performance and a fake one perfectly.
His honesty is so loud every time.. so pure
I have tremors and his shaking seemed liked a tremor. I wonder if he has something medically going on?
thats damage done by the vaccin.
@@johnshanklin5467 I know what yout mean, but I beleave his was just shaking, because this song is very personal and emotional.

Thanks for sharing and nicely said mate.
Good on you brother, may he rest in peace, and it's good you found your peace.
Huge respect.
RIP to your dad, and long may you live in peace.
My condolences bro
Oh, wow ❤
one song - what a energy 🙌🏼
It sounds like you healed yourself as you saw a chance to let it go and forgive.
Thank you for sharing!
His hands shaking while playing the piano... good Lord. Shows that none of us are above grief. And he still gave a beautiful performance through his pain. Just amazing, thank you James
His Dad is still alive though.
Yes the song sounds like his dad died. His emotions are real from when he was preparing to say goodbye. The father miraculously got a kidney transplant and survived. But the song hits with people who have lost a loved one. It's beautiful.
Or it's just nerves
He put everything he had into that performance.
Such a CRIMINALLY Underrated artist. People got stuck in "You're Beautiful" and missed out on an amazing catalog filled with emotional masterpieces.
Very true. Such a well written song.
Absolutely agree I for one am getting caught up 🙏💙🎶
I totally agree with you. It's criminal!!
yeah man. so many wonderful songs!!
Yes I’ve always liked and respected James as a artist and as a man. He comes across so well in interviews with wit and without a hint of arrogance.
My dad was an imperfect man, with an imperfect son. The line "I know your mistakes and you know mine" hits me hard. Same for me, Lost my Dad 2wks ago to Cancer, The 4 days at his bedside hit me hard my hand on his heart then it stopped. I won’t forget those days, We talked & Reconciled. He’s at peace now
my dad died and yesterday was 5 years ago. he's gone. i stand beside him while his breath for last. miss him so much....
happy fathers day to all the dads we've lost along the way
He's definitely underrated as an artist, and his father must be really proud of him after hearing this song
Spot on ❤❤🎵🎶🎶🎶
No my friend, no one underrated james Blunt, they just keep him for self
@@truecrystal1747 not appreciated 😀
His father was with him at the time he recorded it
Think he was proud way before
Hes unbelievable
He feels every note. Every word.
Puts 110% in every time.
Powerful.
James stop making me cry !!!
I haven't once listened to this song without losing it. Makes me miss my dad even more
So true. I weep all the way through, every time.
If it makes you miss him more it also makes you remember him more , for that we owe James alot. My go to song when I want to be close with my dad who left me a year ago .
You are definitely not alone in losing it every time you hear this song! Besides, I think James is losing it as well whilst singing it;)
You are not alone.
Not 1 single time, in the dozens of times I've heard this, have I made it through without tears.
James doesn't need auto tuning his voice is pure and raw. A pure talent he has not been given the opportunity he deserves. He writes from his soul and life experiences. Listen to no Bravery he was on the front line during the Kosovo war. How many singer/song writers have done that!!!
Beautiful performace, how can you not love James Blunt?
Absolutely ❤
I defy anyone to get through this song without weeping. This is James Blunt at his best.
The raw emotion in James singing this song is remarkable. Miss you Dad!
To all the dads still with us and to those we're without.
To all the sons and daughters, never miss a chance to tell your parents how you feel.
The fact that he can perform through that much pain is incredible to me.
Pain? His father's doing fine 😆
@@nickpyecroft8750he is now but the song was written when he wasn’t, so it’ll likely bring out some strong emotions
My Father passed away 2 weeks ago. This song hits much differently now. I miss you, Papa.
This song just shows how powerful a bond there is and should be between a father and a son. I will always get chills listening to this song thinking about my father and about my son.

I think this man is some kind of Angel on earth 🌎. His music 🎶 🎵 is universal.
Vocally live he is perfect,no auto tuning here, just a great voice

Possibly the saddest song ever written. Beautiful.
A heartbreakingly beautiful song with a even more devastatingly beautiful performance…. My goodness…

Here in 2022, and continue to have chills everytime I hear this song. Absolutely stunning performance!

There is so much emotion in this James performance that his hands are shaking while he tickles the keys…

How can a song be so beautiful, yet hurt so much. James really pulled a lot of heartstrings with this amazing song.
