Love to all. I'm a dad of only 41. Listening. I have stage 4 lung cancer in the brain. I have a 1 year and 3 year old daughter. I can't begin to explain. Hold onto everything and everyone xxx
One of the most underrated song writers of all time. One of the very few who are better live than on a record too. He sings to.somebody that's why he so amazing
My dad took his own life when I was 19, he tried when I was 5 too.. I feel so blessed for the extra 14 years. This song makes me think of him and smile.
My dad had a mental illness. We did not get along. Wished I chased the monsters before he passed with lung cancer. We never said goodbye. I cry every time I hear this song.
When my father was dying, my mother and sisters did not let me know. They were there with him, but I was not. I wish I had the chance to say goodbye. This song unleashed all of my feeling of anger, sadness, and betrayal.
Lost my dad 14 years ago and here I am, containing the tears in my office. I try to make my dad proud every day and in that way, I chase the monsters away.
My mom died 4 months ago 3 days before her 95th birthday. She was doing great, said something funny. Closed her eyes and died while I was singing Danny Boy. I come from a family of joke tellers. My sister and brother came to the hospice and my younger sister said mom was so desperate to get away from me singing she had to die to have me stop. Seriously being alone in the room while my mom passed the greatest and most personal.thing I've done. Farewell to my great Irish mom
My mum and dad separated when I was five and I never saw him again. Whilst in the army I told myself that once I was out and home I'd search for my dad. I left the army in 2000 and tried to find him, unfortunately he had died two years prior from leukaemia. This still guts me today as there were so many things I wanted to ask him. Don't put off what you can do today and love your family with all your heart!! Sleep well Dad and Mum too!! 🙏
we don't know each other but know that you are an incredible person, sorry to hear that, and know that he would be proud of you today, stay an amazing person and I wish you the best for the rest of your life.
I can’t think of a better example of art. Thank you, James, for sharing with us and allowing countless men especially to unbottle the deepest of feelings
Moved to tears. Lost my Dad last year, amidst recalling his mistakes, errors, failures and monsters he didn’t chase away which he eventually paid for, l miss him everyday and hope to make him proud by chasing the monsters and darkness he left behind and mine too away. Rest On Dad. Miss You Always.
I don't believe that he is underrated he has a very Hugh following people from all nations love James Blunt and that's the measurement of his ratings, its not the number of awards that make you a star it's the number of hearts that you touch with your gifts and he has touched many hearts in the most profound ways ❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
I lost my dad when I was 9. I never knew him as he left my mom when I was 2. The person I think about when I hear this song is my mother. She passed in 2018 from breast cancer.
Absolutley outstanding and touching lyrics. Don't think the world was ready for James when he first came on the scene as a performer. They certainly know now!
Any song is better with a choir. Fact. This song by itself its absolute perfection, though. It’s a message we all have a tough time swallowing… and it’s sung with ALL the emotion. He never short changes an audience.
Oh, before they turn off all the lights I won't read you your wrongs or your rights The time has gone I'll tell you goodnight, close the door Tell you I love you once more The time has gone So here it is I'm not your son, you're not my father We're just two grown men saying goodbye No need to forgive, no need to forget I know your mistakes and you know mine And while you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud So, daddy, won't you just close your eyes? Don't be afraid, it's my turn To chase the monsters away Oh, well, I'll read a story to you Only difference is this one is true The time has gone I folded your clothes on the chair I hope you sleep well, don't be scared The time has gone So here it is I'm not your son, you're not my father We're just two grown men saying goodbye No need to forgive, no need to forget I know your mistakes and you know mine And while you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud So, daddy, won't you just close your eyes? Don't be afraid, it's my turn To chase the monsters away Sleep a lifetime Yes, and breathe a last word You can feel my hand on your own I will be the last one So I'll leave a light on Let there be no darkness, in your heart But I'm not your son, you're not my father We're just two grown men saying goodbye No need to forgive, no need to forget I know your mistakes and you know mine And while you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud So, daddy, won't you just close your eyes? Don't be afraid, it's my turn To chase the monsters away
My brave ex-service father had a beautiful standard and bugle send off 1st July. I wanted to sing this to him but couldn't even as a trained singer. James, your words went with him. Thank you.
This song encapsulates the last 7/8 days of my emotions for my dad, who died in 2021. James captures my whole body and feelings with this 1 song. There are many lyrics that make me tear up, but it's the "don't be afraid it's my turn to chase the monster away" that renders me speechless with tears welling up as my dad chased plenty of monsters away while i was growing up 😢😢. It also makes me sad as my brother died in 2016, and his kids never had that experience of their dad "chasing the monster's away" 😢😢
i saw this on the night. My father was a loyal military soldier for over 41 years 'Mr Harrier' who passed away in March 2015 - This song was so poignant about our relationship in his last weeks of his life. It captures that period perfectly ...and as others have commented so emotional ...brings a tear to my eye
Amazing words that play on the heartstrings! I feel emotional and remember how my dad passed. He was taken care of very well throughout his aging and unfortunately spent the last hours of his life without me by his side. It disturbs me that I wasn’t there in his final moments as my mom did as well. Cared for both over 20 years but died alone.
Have no idea how he can sing this song when it’s clear how personal it was to him its a beautiful sorrowful song my soul broke open from this song while dealing with dad’s dementia
My dad died this year, I sure did.. Also "no need to forgive, no need to forget, I know your mistakes and you know mine" It's like a knife right through the soul...right where the knife needs to go...
Time to chase the monsters away,,thats what a lot of dads used to say at bedtime, and then to say its my time, what a incredible piece of music and lyrics,,it is a very sad song thats resonates through your loss of the man you called dad, RIP, all dads
“It’s my time to chase the monsters away.” This line of finality that takes you back to the memories of being tucked in my dad… to a time when you hoped things were eternal. I believe in eternity but regardless of what you believe in or do not, the effect is real either way. Love is real regardless of what you believe.. and love is something that nothing can touch.
Very single times I'm listening to this song I'm cry like baby, almost 13 years my father passed away, but I'm feel like it's happening yesterday tho, now your and my memory left behind, miss you so much daddy
James I love every song you do but this one really touches my heart I lost my dad when I was 14 years old and am a grandmother myself now and still wonder what it would of been having my dad a lot longer 👌👍🙏🏻
I’m sorry for your loss I lost my dad last year to cancer on the 15th of January. What’s crazy is I had never heard this song until a month after his passing and it was from Iam Tongi’s audition on American Idol. And to make the story unbelievable is that that episode aired the 19th of February well we had my Dad’s ‘Celebration of Life’ just the day before on the 18th of February. I feel like I was hearing it at the right time. And my brothers and our mom watched the audition too. Very emotional 💙
This only piano version of the song is absolutely beautiful!!! The song is touching, deep, lovely, sad and sweet at the same time. It makes you cry. You can perceive all the son-father love from it ❤. His performance is beautiful, with even the background choir voices in the final variation 🎶🎵🎼🩷
For everyone out there who has lost someone they love more than life I am so very sorry for your loss and I send you my absolute blessings and love for the future ❤️❤️❤️
I heard this Song yesterday for the first time at the NO BORDER FESTIVAL IN ITALY and I cried for the first time after my father died 10 years ago... THANK YOU FOR THIS EMOTIONAL SONG❤️❤️❤️
I lost my dad 6 years ago and am going to our village remembrance service to place a cross and a poppy for him, he volunteered at 18 to protect merchant ships in the Atlantic and then went to Burma, he only briefly talked of the war although he later went on to serve in the Army for 22 years, i miss my dad very much, i will also place a cross under a cherry tree he planted for me, thank you James Blunt for allowing me to feel,
My daddy closed his eyes today. Another two grown men have said goodbye, the time is gone. Sleep well Opa, love you x

My dad has had dementia for almost ten years and this song resonates with me. I’m no fan of James Blunt, but I’m so thankful he wrote and sung this.
When you are happy, you listen to the melody. When you are sad, you listen to the lyrics. Those lyrics will come one day. I will come back here then.
well said. see you then
You know its a sad song when you cry even though your dad’s alive and well!

Beautiful song ,sung by a wonderful singer songwriter , well done captain blunt, and I'm not a military person but this guy James blunt is fantastic.
I'm amazed he held it together so well. I can't hear this song without weeping like a baby, so there's not a chance in hell I could sing it.
Moved to tears.

Rest In Peace to my Father In Law. Fly Freely. You were like a Father to me. We'll meet again, someday. 😭
Oh, before they turn off all the lights
I won't read you your wrongs or your rights
The time has gone
I'll tell you goodnight, close the door
Tell you I love you once more
The time has gone
So here it is
I'm not your son, you're not my father
We're just two grown men saying goodbye
No need to forgive, no need to forget
I know your mistakes and you know mine
And while you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud
So, daddy, won't you just close your eyes?
Don't be afraid, it's my turn
To chase the monsters away
Oh, well, I'll read a story to you
Only difference is this one is true
The time has gone
I folded your clothes on the chair
I hope you sleep well, don't be scared
The time has gone
So here it is
I'm not your son, you're not my father
We're just two grown men saying goodbye
No need to forgive, no need to forget
I know your mistakes and you know mine
And while you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud
So, daddy, won't you just close your eyes?
Don't be afraid, it's my turn
To chase the monsters away
Sleep a lifetime
Yes, and breathe a last word
You can feel my hand on your own
I will be the last one
So I'll leave a light on
Let there be no darkness, in your heart
But I'm not your son, you're not my father
We're just two grown men saying goodbye
No need to forgive, no need to forget
I know your mistakes and you know mine
And while you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud
So, daddy, won't you just close your eyes?
Don't be afraid, it's my turn
To chase the monsters away
Sometimes a song comes along that simply means so much

This is a beautifully sad song. To all our beloved fathers who have passed 😪❤
I don't know how he can perform this song without weeping.
Doing theater, I can sadly relate… there’s a line I have “the inside of me is weeping, while on the outside I’m screaming”
His music is emotional. Where have I been, wish I would have been following him. Just love his music. Listening now.
What an amazing singer and what an amazing song. Thanks James!!! 👍❤️🥲
