Jonathan...........I've been a teacher for 50+ years and I've gotta say you are truly an excellent teacher, a master instructor of the cello which I"m learning late in life. Too bad I didn't begin playing years ago under your care, but at least I can now watch your fine point instructions here on TH-cam.......Thank you , thank you, for showing me how to learn the basics of playing. First in all aspect.. so you simply inspire and make it easy to grasp the logic of playing the cello this and that way. Im an old cow, but as they say its never too late to learn a new language. I come from a classical guitar background, picked up the cello a couple of months ago, (you just can't tell a guitarist not to try vibrato on another string instrument), at the beginning I was trying to do the vibrato as if it was the guitar, no vibrato happened at all lol, till I eventually got the vibrato hand movement on the cello which is a bit different, now for some reason I can't technically describe in words how they are different, but never underestimate the human muscle memory I guess.
Also in my humble opinion, it's not a bad idea starting to train for the vibrato early on, but along with training for a clean and in-tune sound of course.
When I was a young girl, between 9 and 11, one of my teachers would reward us at the end of a good lesson, in which we had demonstrated that we had practised well, by playing this for us at the end of the session. Loved Mr. Grindrod. He was the best teacher ever.

I’ve only been playing cello for a few months and I’ve learned a whole lot in those months. I naturally learned how to do vibrato but it still needs work. I’ve also learned a little bit of jazz and it’s pretty fun to do

Too late, I tried it as a beginner.😂 And I found out real quick why it's an advanced technique. Separateness of hand, proper bowing, finger strength and agility, knowing where the vibrato motion is carried out (the elbow, not the wrist) etc etc etc. So for now, I'm content with learning the foundational fundamentals.☺️
and today, have you tried it since??
@@CelloCoach ha ha ha...yes, of course I have continued tried vibrato in these last 6 months, I can't help myself 😂! Sheesh, it's been that long already?!😫 I'm determined to master it!☺️ I've since learned the motion actually starts in the shoulder and that has helped me, but I'm not there yet. Thank you for checking up on me!☺️

After 3 years I'm beginning to add vibrato. My husband - ever the critique of everything - always says "add more vibrato. I'd write my response...but it's usually obscene :-)

Playing guitar for 15 years i picked up a cello a few weeks ago and i keep wanting to vibrato like guitar and it just doesn't work lol
Yup, guitar vibrato is different from cello vibrato. Think like Spider Man, fingers in the fingerboard, and rotate like a fulcrum on the place.
Played violin for 6-7 years picked up the cello two months ago, already ready to preform lol
Played guitar for 10 years! Found no problems after 2 months. Now I am in the third month, and I still have some difficulty only using the pinky. Confident in a month I will pass even this step.
For us guitarmen/woman life is not so complicated on a cello!!!

You're welcome, Kleiton. First, learn the shifts, with a single fingering, and a good bowing. Only then, should we add vibrato. :-)
makes sense; no vibrato while learning form and intonation. I actually wondered, a priori, whether hiding intonation under vibrato was a technique??! Ug... thanks for straightening me out on that.
Thank you for this info, I am guilty as a beginner to try and do this. Now I understand the reason why I should not. I am a guitarist and vibrato on guitar is different technique and I have been trying to run before I can crawl. PS. I loved you other you tubes regarding the relationship of the 2nd finger and thumb.... now to arch your better cello bow..... I am having such difficulty holding the bow with good balance.. amoungst other things. Hi from New Zealand.

Finally someone spoke about the thumb during vibrato!!!!
I feel like I'm getting it right with second and first fingers, but.... the thumb must go below the first finger in order for that finger to vibrate smoothly. And I knew it could not be right! (also the aching thumb tip hours later isn't a good sign either).

And what do you say is the movement for vibrato? Is it simply up and down, as most on youtube say, or is it good to think as an arc around the fingertip, as my former teacher once told me to start practicing?
Anytime, luablau. Frequency wise, we play juwt above and below the targeted note. To better explain this, I will show what vibrato looks like using my DAW. Stay tuned and keep those precise comments coming! :-)

Challenge accepted. The Swan is now my personal test to see if I'm ready for vibrato.
i started music late, late for the musical world, at 10, 6th grade, and stopped in 8th, our teacher didn't teach the newbies at least until year two,
a continuous and rounded vibrato would contribute to the smoothness and continuity that performing this beautiful piece requires..
You vibrate one note and the one after it is rather deadly plain and flat. You also accent each note, specially after shifting positions, is that intentional?

It would have been helpful if you had given a bit more information about which parts of the arm are involved in producing vibrato. Near the end you seem to be intimating that it should come from the elbow - but no mention made of the upper arm/shoulder.

i am a cello beginner and have been finding your videos very helpful! what do you think about beginners who have previous experience with another string instrument doing vibrato? my main instrument is the viola which i have a lot more experience with but i decided to challenge myself by picking up the cello and i find it almost instinct at this point to want to vibrate long notes on the cello
Go for it, but remember to adapt your previously learned technique to cello. Also, I recommend playing a song cleanly and clearly with no vibrato, smooth tone and precise intonation, prior to adding vibrato.

When you have thoroughly learned the position you want to vibrate in. Hence, vibrato in 1st position will arrive sooner than in 5th.

Jonathan, love your work and video's. I have been having lessons for a year now.... I am sometimes disappointed and frustrated with the exceptionally slow speed of progress...... I love the sound of vibrato but don't think I am good enough with my intonation as yet to be able to jump to this technique.... when do you know you're ready to start trying?
When you are a confident with your bow control. The wiggle from our left hand will jostle our position, so build confidence in your bowing. Left hand wise, make sure you can return to any given position - all 4 fingers down accurately - prior to attempting vibrato. Good question and (I know it's been said ) I love your name! Saw her perform for the 4th time in my life in Paris just last month :-)
@@CelloCoach Cheers! I've been having lessons just over a year and I guess I'm doing pretty well considering. I'm studying ABRSM grade 3, hoping to sit this year...? I'm still struggling with consistent placement of left hand especially after shifting. Working between 1st and 4th mostly.... Thank you for appreciating my name, I'd love to be half as musical. Sadly singing I couldn't hold a tune in a bucket, if my life depended on it! Maybe one day with cello....?

Thank you for this video. I'm new to cello and I'm always stunned to see that other adult beginners on youtube come home from their first lesson already having been introduced to the first position. A year later they already play vibrato. Is that normal pace? I know proficiency is not measured by time but on average - is that reasonable or is it rushing? I wanted to track my progress with the others on youtube but since I spent my first six week on the open strings I'm already way behind ;)

A colleague went to The Conservatoire de Paris, after Julliard, and her teacher had her "re-learn" open strings for a month! I would rather hear quality tone on an open string, from frog to tip, than bad intonation masked by vibrato.
When I do vibrato the vibrato sound comes from the bow bouncing when I shake the whole cello 🤣

so i think the advise to avoid learning vibrato early is applicable but there are those who should start early, it depends. i started vibrato in the first week of cello practice and it has progressed rapidly, if you leave it too late, you will perhaps not allow your technique to develop as naturally
i should add that i have played a different instrument in the spiked fiddle family before cello but i am relatively new at that too and with both instruments i made efforts to improve vibrato daily, it strengthens your fingers and wrists if nothing else. now 3 weeks into cello practice i can almost maintain a full bow vibrato even with the first and fourth fingers..probably not smooth but still you really should consider pushing yourself early, btw i'm an adult learner.
We all want to fly like eagles, but one must learn to walk like a duck. The rotating of the arm is the hardest part, we tend to use the fingers only but it is not correct.

Just wondering . . . you are an experienced player and very helpful to folks starting out on cello and I agree with your suggestion to hold off on vibrato . . . your intonation is off on several notes - in more recent videos, you play much better than this - so was your playing in this video done intentionally so as to emulate the sound of a cello player in the first throws of playing the Swan and vibrato? It is NOT my intention to couch an insult in my observation - just wondering if you wanted to play this way so as not to intimidate new cellists with higher level playing? : )

You are right, but mostly wrong. At 1:24 the B is -18c, tuned to 440hz. Every high B is near perfect 👌🏻, while the rest of the notes (save for one -18c D) are well within the acceptable +\- 8 for advanced players. Intonation is my obsession, and I got this in lock, “bro”.
