Thank you, Jen! I'm in my 60's and have been taking cello lessons off and on for over 10 years. I have struggled with vibrato because as a kid my parents decided I was going to play the viola but couldn't afford private lessons and I envied those that could. Also, the viola was very uncomfortable to play. I've overthought vibrato and watched too many videos and it just confused me. But your very clear instruction is just what I need. I have also thought that if I keep up with vibrato practice it will one day just click. I don't want a bad vibrato so I'm not rushing it. I watch your video almost every day. You're great!

Thank you! I'm picking up the cello at age 59 for the first time in 20 years. I only played for about a year then, and life got too busy. I had been working on vibrato when I stopped and was having a rough time. This is perfect. So much better than the way a teacher at a university where I lived was instructing me to develop it.

I'm 72 and began learning cello four months ago in Buenos Aires. I share my instrument with a ten-year old who has played two years and tried vibrato on her own during a practice session in my home. You provide the exercises she needs to prepare for playing with vibrato. I'm going to do them myself so I can show her. I have the best reason to trim the fingernails on my left hand. I need the curved hand position! Thanks for your excellent explanation.

Brilliant! I watched another video on vibrato and just wasn't able to do it. But, amazingly, I was just able to get a reasonable sounding vibrato on the first try after following your technique. I've only been playing cello for a few days (and probably shouldn't even be trying vibrato yet), so I'm pleased to be able to do this! Woops. Just lost it. Will replay that section of the video and try again. Ok, this will take lots of practice. But your approach is great! Now, if I can just be patient enough to follow all the steps.

omg i cant believe i just did a real vibrato. i always tried to use my forearm like my teacher said, but it was always super uncomfortable, so i used the fake vibrato technique which relied on the wrist. thank you so much omg.

The best teacher ever. You remind me of my paino teacher, Mrs Coetzee. She was so passionate about teaching the piano, all her students were A students. I wish you could be my cello teacher. Well done 🙌🙌

vee- BRAH- toe, please. This is an Italian word, not English: not "vibrate" with an "O" on the end. Glad to finally see someone teach about NO THUMB ! Thank you!

Very excellent video, and I will be using it to learn from! BTW I'm an instrument maker and repairman. I have 221 instruments in my collection now. I just got a cello for $150 that is worth almost $1000. I have a huge rack of violins and other string instruments that I have made. I normally play violin and guitar, but now wish to do cello! Thanks for making this video!!!

Excellent video. I've always used my cello for sound design, and samples when I needed to do a line. I feel like I could work on this and get good at it! Such a good explanation of the technique

Hi. That's great video, it really helps. I have a question though. Currently the tension of the strings on my cello strings is so high because of the fingerboard being lowered about half an inch (by the previous owner). I'm vibrating quite well with normal cello and normal string tension, but my cello is so hard, that I can't vibrate well on the higher positions (5th and above) especially with the 3rd and 4th finger. What would you suggest me do if I've got to continue with a cello with high string tension like the one I've got? Sorry if I made grammatical mistakes, I hope to hear from you soon. Thanks 😊

if you want to learn instantly, I'll save you all the useless time on this video.
    1. press down on the string with one finger
    2. move your wrist up and down
    3. move it fast but not too fast or fast enough so it sounds good to the ear.
