"Was he threatening anyone?" The dispatcher should educate the caller and let them know there is nohing wrong with someone having a firearm. Even FL allows people to open carrry in certain situations. If the caller lies, they should be charged. This legally blind citizen was doing his civic duty and reporting for jury duty. When the jury was cancelled he was walking home. The thing that outraged so many people was not the fact that he was blind and had a cane folded in his back pocket. The thing that got us was that he was simply walking down the street like any one of us could have been. They wanted to investigate if the cane was a gun, fine, he showed them it was a cane. That should have been the end of it. Then he asked if the cop was a tyrant and she cheerfully said, "Yes, I am a tyrant, why don't you turn around so we can put the cuffs on you." He was arrested for nothing, zero, zilch. Any of us could have been walking instead of this blind man. The female cop was all smiles and happy as she took away this man's freedom and put him in a cage. The chief might just as well have said, "Why are you so mad? We're just enforcing the law."
Yes, but still, really not ok to investigate if that was a gun. No way it looked like one. Detaining a citizen for a stick in the back pocket is insufficient grounds.
Even further, retraining these tyrants about civil rights is BS. That's just to cover their own asses, not to protect the people. @@McCucumber Well, I've been following police corruption for a long time. Behind the desk of the police watch station is security that is equal to the pentagon, maybe more secure. Once the police have jurisdiction over a person, they are at the mercy of justice or injustice, and it is a gamble. Police have "sovereign Immunity" under the 11th amendment. Google "police hiring and low IQ," and you will find the courts upheld hiring of officers whose IQs are limited at a lower point. So, later they modified immunity to "qualified," yet it is still a constitutional right created in 1795. So, in 1795 Congress legalized corruption by granting immunity to the accused, "unless the state consents." This is a perversion of the divine right of kings, and James Wilson pointed this out in Chisholm v. Georgia, I'd recommend reading that opinion. So in essence, sociopaths recognize this opportunity and they join official state employment, and they get this get out of jail free card. This has gone on over 200 years and has cultivated our politicians and law enforcement to hire sociopaths and sociopaths can handle the harsh campaigning of politics, where decent people are not built for such psychological warfare. This has resulted in the destruction of any utopia that could have been gleaned from a bill of rights that was limited and utterly destroyed by the 11th amendment. So, now they can arrest political parties on technicalities, and nothing can be done. They really control their own entity without checks and balances. The Grand Juries are not independent and controlled by them. The police have too much power and they have created an industry that seeks to create and manufacture more crime to support their autonomy.

I was a Probation and Parole Officer here in Maine for 35 years. What I saw was the relationship between police and the criminal element has changed very little over the years. What has changed is the the relationship between police and the law abiding community has sunken into the pits and it is not going to change until cops like this are driven completely out of police work.
So true, the young generation is being trained to forget the constitution and treat the law abiding citizens as peasants if they are not totally conformed to how they think a lawful citizen should look and behave.
I couldn't agree more. It seems the majority of cops these days do not understand the law they are paid to enforce or understand the people they are sworn to protect and serve.
@@TheBooban No. I don't care who called them or what the caller told them, the first step in their "investigation" is to go speak to the caller and get more details and see what "evidence" the caller has, or at least get them to sign a "witness statement" first, before contacting the person being reported on. I say this because I believe that when an officer says, "we got a call of a suspected person...etc.", is really just a bogus statement they make to justify them just stopping someone to ask them what they're up to.

I don't know....the two day suspension isn't much, I agree. But demoting a sergeant back to regular deputy and barring him from advancing for at least 2 years is a bit more harsh than just a slap on the wrist. And it's warranted. He's going to lose a big chunk of pay, his management/supervisor position, and have a permanent black mark on his record that is going to come up the next time he's up for promotion.
I'm pro law enforcement but this crosses the line of acceptability to me. The female arresting officer was obviously on a power trip. I think they both need to seek new employment in other fields.
This was willful, blatant, even malicious, abuse of power and bastardization of the oath sworn by both these officers. No further conduct or testimony from these officers can be considered free from taint.
People’s outrage and pressure are the only things that can make these morally corrupt policemen in a power trip change something and actually charge them with a crime. They belong in jail.
In any other job this level of incompetence would be ground for immediate termination. In any other job if you'd do something like that to anyone, you'd get jailed. Watching this from over the pond, it boggles the mind that people such as these get such slaps on the wrist instead of actual punishment. Incredible.

This is very troubling for me. I routinely carry a folding cane much like Mr. Hodges carries for exactly the same reason. I have to wonder whether this could happen to me. The reason being is that when I showed up for jury duty here in Arizona, my stick was nearly confiscated as a weapon. I was also asked, as was Mr. Hodges, why I wasn't using it. However, they took the gutless way out with this action.
This isn't about training, this is about a fundamental change of attitude by police officers. Police officers need to be able to admit to themselves that they get it wrong sometimes and I think that's something innate in a person and not necessarily something you can train. This police officer's ego prevented her from simply saying to Mt Hodges "My bad, I made a mistake, I'm really sorry to have bothered you". Instead it seemed like a switch in her head had been flicked and from that point on she felt she had to get the better of him. Police officers need to leave their egos at home when they go out on duty.
People that want to have power over people are the most likely to abuse it. The sheriff allowing this and making it crystal clear that this isn't a firable offense is mind boggling.
"As Sheriff, I take full responsibility" Eh...no, you didn't, saying "I take responsibility" is not the same as actually taking "responsibility", you've clearly not trained your officers.
Not a training thing, they're kidnappers who knew what they were doing, and "taking responsibility" is not something he should be eager to do this close to the day of the rope

How about giving cops some actual CONSEQUENCES for abusing their power, instead of Paid Leave, or blackisting them so they can't be Cops in a different state or county?

He is a garbage sheriff. Vote him out! He could not have made this worse on himself. He's defending the officers when they clearly violated his rights for no reason. They knew he didnt have a weapon and he had no obligation to identify and they knew it. She even said "yes I am" when he asked her if she was a tyrant.
Her response to being asked if she was a tyrant came across like she was proud of it and she relished in an opportunity to demonstrate that she indeed was one.
@@stevesmith3199 she was absolutely giddy handcuffing that man and throwing him in the back of the cop car. Every arrest she has ever made needs to come under review.
How so you vote him out when no one ever runs against him
Are you a tyrant "yes I am" truer words have never been spoken. This was not about protecting and serving it was about power and ego. The community deserves better.
It seems ignorance of the law is just as rampant as the stunning stupidity surrounding vision impairment.
You gotta give this man credit for swift action
This is why EVERY single cop needs a cam. Were it not for the body cam, the story would have been that the citizen threaten law enforcement with a "cylindrical metal object." Therefore he was arrest charged and convicted of 1st degree assault on a peace officer. Things are bad enough WITH the body cam in that the officers gets 2 days suspension and "remedial training". If you encounter a police officer you MUST hit that record button on your phone.....remember
They need to be fired. They will continue to do the same thing to other citizens. Fire them now!
Fire those sheriff's and sue the sheriff department
Fire, Charge and Prosecute the cops. They violated many of that man's Civil Rights by engaging in retaliatory criminal activity. Termination, charging and prosecution of the offenders is the only acceptable outcome. Very disappointed in your lack of adequate handling of this matter, sheriff. Do the right thing.
Everybody was white in the altercation so it’s kind of like a double negative. It just sorta cancels each other out.
Agreed. Whether you support police or not, these ones disgraced everyone that wears a badge and stomped on our constitutional rights.
@@evanbrant9506 go away racist
@@mhcaffey120 how is that racist? Cops get locked up and prosecuted and get defunded to the fullest extent. These cops got a simple slap on the wrist? White on white crimes just cancels each other out because it doesn’t make good news. I’m sorry, it’s the truth.
Targets get looted and city’s get burnt. Tell me, who’s racist again?
She also lied in her report.
this is BS fire them both !! he had his cane and she said it was a gun and that she was a tyrant and her sergeant agreed with her actions !! how was this a mistake or accident ... this was a power trip and nothing else !!!
Not unexpected. This was ONLY a violation of his Mr. Hodges rights. I guess if he had been physically harmed they may have been fired. However, I would have suspended these clowns for longer than 7 days for the Sgt and 2 days for the deputy. They should have been fired, that would have been a bold move. However, they took the gutless way out with this action.
It is not just bad training. It is the culture of ego power.
That would be correct, here’s a link to what happened last year

He calls it a policy violation. It's actually called breaking the law.
Conversation with a cop can get you arrested, sent to jail, and even killed.
Now, that Sheriff needs to resign with the deputies charged with false imprisonment.
He isn’t deeply saddened. He’s embarrassed that the body can footage blew up
He takes "full responsability" but doesn't punish himself.
He investigated himself, and cleared himself of any wrongdoing.
As a Sheriff, he's a disgrace.
"As Sheriff, I take full responsibility"
Eh...no, you didn't, saying "I take responsibility" is not the same as actually taking "responsibility", you've clearly not trained your officers.
Damn straight!
Not a training thing, they're kidnappers who knew what they were doing, and "taking responsibility" is not something he should be eager to do this close to the day of the rope
The sheriff says he takes full responsibility. What's your punishment sheriff?
Conspiracy to deprive rights under color of law, deprivation of rights under color of law, kidnapping. Not policy violations.
As soon as she saw it was a walking stick and not a firearm, it became an unlawful detention. She should have said “ I see it’s not a firearm, sorry to bother you. Have a nice day”. And then left him alone.
Everything they did, after seeing the walking stick, is criminal and they should be charged for their criminal activities.
That's how people get shot. The Police escalate instead of cooling down the situation.
How about giving cops some actual CONSEQUENCES for abusing their power, instead of Paid Leave, or blackisting them so they can't be Cops in a different state or county?
If a Nurse of Doctor violated their oath, they wouldn't be able to go work at another Hospital, they would lose their license and have to find a different line of work.
Take any fines OUT OF THEIR 401ks
401k’s are for suckers. Cops have real pensions.
Crimes... Not policy violations
