She's one of those characters that you really have to read her whole kit.
This is exactly why I wish Mihoyo would give us DPS dummies so we can test overall team DPS numbers from a rotation..
@SharinganSakura not really the same. You can test numbers but not really get true stats like total dmg on a dps window. This is why streamer will do damage showcases on the Bosses for common reference.

Shenhe is probably the first character that I actually got confused on how her skill works(eventually I did understand how her icy quills works though)

i was thinking it was a base attack boost but it was after the multiplication of the base with the scaling.
my first confusion was Raiden. had no idea she was to be built for ER.
Shen He is a buffer Mihoyo has complete control over, imo.

This explanation of how Shenhe kit works was the best I've seen. Not exactly a buffer but more like dealing most of her damage through her teammates' attacks/skills.
A neat interaction i found (very useful if you have c1 and up)
characters can use the icy quill even if theyre not on the field.
this means you can drop ayaka/diona/rosaria and venti/kazuha/sucrose (cryo infuse) ult, swap to shenhe, then make quill stacks so they basically consume it the moment its given.
standard combo:
shenhe press e for cryo application
kazuha hold e into burst (cryo swirl, res decrease, cryo dmg bonus)
shenhe ult (res decrease, dmg bonus)
ayaka e+ult. then immediately diona ult
shenhe double e (delay the second one to align it with diona ult tick rate)
Depending on what you’re running on Diona, couldn’t it be even better to put her in before Ayaka? My Diona is on 4 p Noblesse, so Ayaka’s burst would do even more damage if put in after Diona’s burst.
Better combo is ayaka dash to apply cryo.
Kazuha e then q.
Shenhe e then q.
Kokomi e or mona q e.
Ayaka dash q e.
then shenhe e again.
Kazuha again.
What about a chongyun, xinqiu, and qiqi

Reverse melt on Shenhe is actually pretty good from what I've tried out. My Rosaria did much bigger numbers when reverse melting xiangling's pyro application, and Bennett enables Shenhe to give bigger buffs to Rosaria as well.

worth noting, if you don’t have enough ER subs you can use 2 Emblem pieces instead of 2 glad/shimenawa. especially if you have really good extra emblem pieces. the loss of 18% attack could be made up with good subs from the emblem pieces. (I have one that 5 rolled 3 crit subs 2 att% subs and had ER 4th sub). i feel running like 140% ER is a sweet spot for my shenhe
I'm planning to run her 2p Shime+Glad with Main DPS Kaeya (4p Blizzard), Chongyun (4p NO) and Kokomi/Kazuha depending on what I need. Thanks so much for the guide, it was very much worth the wait :D
Something to notice, that may not be that important, is that Shenhe's A4 passive applies to every type of damage not only Cryo attacks, so that will help you decide to go for a tap E or hold E depending on your team comp and what character benefits the most for the passive buff even if it is not cryo.

i feel like this video should have included royal spear(starglitter weapon). It has the same base attack and attack percentage as lithic and is not locked behind gacha.

Right now she doesn't really fit my teams super well but I'm sure there's gonna be future characters that work well with her. I've tried both and I prefer running freeze Ayaka with thrilling tales Mona, the damage is slightly less but it's super comfy and the healer slot remains flexible. Never thought I'd day that but I kinda want Kokomi so I can combine both playstyles xD

Making do with my team comps, since I just stuck her in my already decent team comps, I use Hu Tao, Ayaka, Shenhe, and Zhongli, so I can swap Ayaka for Xingqiu in my Raiden National team(XQ was in walnut to balance damage and cooldowns between the two team comps). By sticking her in my Walnut comp, Ayaka isn't just hanging on randomly in my Walnut comp since I don't have Albedo or anything decent to pair with Hu Tao + Zhongli that isn't Xingqiu. She's actually decent with Hu Tao since when I don't have her burst up, I use Shenhe's charge E to buff HT's charge attacks, otherwise, burst and tap E when both Hu Tao and Ayaka's bursts are up. Ayaka's just there for her burst and E to melt and get buffed by Shenhe.

I use her as a DPS right now. Fairly good I should say together with YunJin and Chongyun. I run a freeze comp together with Kokomi as well and it wrecks enemies. 20-30k NA per hit plus the hold E in the end that deals 60-100k depending on the stacks (if have c4). I don't have a cryo DPS as of the moment and will switch to a full attack setup once I get an Ayaka. Currently running a 2pcs Blizzard/2pcs Shimenawa with 2.7k ATK(3000 with Calamity Queller passive), 65 CR, 169 CD.

Thank you for explaining how her e damage fundamentally works. I'll use her more crit optimized artifacts on other supports, and find the most atk% with a bit of er that I can
First, great guide on providing clarity on Shenhe's kit! One thing I would like to know is besides ele % and crit stats, do artifact set modifiers (IE Gladiator's Normal %, EOSF Burst %) apply after Shenhe's Icy Quills flat damage, or do they apply before Shenhe's Icy Quills get added? Thanks again!
After; all such buffs are stacked with your elemental damage bonus where relevant. Her quills are added just after skill multiplier but before damage buffs and crit.

I think 2 emblem+2 shim is also an option, since she needs ER to get her burst off cooldown.

I love her tbh. I don’t regret using my guaranteed to get her instead of Zhongli at all. But I do have Ayaka. I wouldn’t recommend getting her unless you have a cryo DPS.

@@Vizible21 I highly recommend you get Ayaka. She is amazing. She was my first 5 star and I didn’t even want her, I wanted Ningguang. But now I am really glad I got her. She’s carried me every time I’ve needed to build any character. And Shenhe is good for non-cryo characters (she gives my Shogun 2k extra damage on her abilities and doubles Bennett’s ult damage), so it’s a win anyway that you got her. And, well, Cryo supremacy tbh. And you’re lucky you got her constelation early, I always go to soft pity 😪
@@wraithuwu5317 it feels like kazuha plus zhongli = Shenhe for ayaka and ganyu in terms of supporting, so better get her than zhongli, shield is not necessary in the game there is dodge there is pyrp lector, twin Bathysmal Bishop, Wolflord, Bleed, Doggos who ignores shield snd the resistat shred is nothing to count on since VV set do 2x shredding it

Hmmmm....I'd consider spending my 50/50 to try for her if she didn't favor cryo so much. I'd love to run her with two other off field DPS for even more free damage procs. Oh well.
Kinda looking like Zhongli will be who I throw the 50/50 at for Albedo + Zhongli construct shenanigans. That or I do the smart thing and keep saving for Yae.

Me after watching Xlice for summoning videos: how's this joker gonna do a proper guide lmao.
Me after watching this video: well I'll be damned
since pulling shenhe and her signature weapon I've not once regretted it. I only use her on 1 team, with ayaka, mona and kazuya. She only really buffs 1 character in that team, but the numbers i get on my ayaka in this team rival that of a c6 ayaka without shenhe.
3 Cryo + 1 Anemo will do more damage than 3 Cryo + 1 Hydro, but you'll lose that 20% Crit rate from Freeze
I'd only go with Anemo if your dps' crit rate is high enough

Really great video! I can tell a lot of thought went into this one, very well layed out. I was hoping the strong guides would take a bit of time before they came out, yours did not disappoint.
The team damage calcs were really well done, idk if I'm the odd one out, but I really liked the math. Plus the realistic team comps and the graphics, great section.
Was curious what others would build or recommend. Initally tried noblesse, but didn't really have the right pieces leveled, so went glad & shim. But I may try for a good atk-nobless set.
For weapon comparison, where would vortex sit?
I'm thinking it kinda frees up either crit hat or ER sands, or just all in on atk. Either seems good; but fav and lithic(r4) are appealing too, but not personally leveled. I think I was looking forward to your weapons test, but I totally get that would have been long vid.

the one thing i wanted to learn from this video was energy management. how to use her with ayaka/ganyu + hydro + anemo. the only actual showcase of rotations was the abyss run at the end ... where he couldnt get the burst up in time with 3 cryo characters ... and in fact didnt even finish that floor and from the editing making it seem like he just gave up after failing to do the chamber in 1:30 :/

Shenhe is kinda insane in the fact that just today I cleared abyss 11 with Shenhe Mono cyro...
What's the big deal? the catch is.. I actually forgot that I equipped her lvl 90 Favonius spear to YunJin.. so she's there with lvl 1. default Iron spear and 1200 atk as opposed to the usual 2800 atk. Whichi is why I thought it's weird why Diona E damage dropped drastically from usual 8k per missile to 3k per missile.
She literally carried the whole team only using her resistance shred and passive bonus! My DPS is f2p Amenoma Ayaka BTW.
In mono cyro I found the best rotation for her is actually tap E to Q to any other character E and Q to either Ayaka or Ganyu Q to her Hold E then auto attack. The sequence of quick swap are always longer than 10 second making it possible for you to gain the bonus from both her passive in sequence.
I'm saving from now (Yae Miko banner) primogems to get shenhe C6 and her weapon R5.

Edit: meaning the quills don't get used up in one go when Ganyu hits multiple enemies in AOE.

Does your judgement of skill > burst vs burst > skill for her rotation also account catching particles? Or should we try to build enough ER so that we can swap without catching them on her?
