That's a pretty ingenious idea Phill! Personally I dislike edge paint but not quite good enough for turned edge , so I will try this. I'm really surprised no one came up with this before. Perhaps the glues weren't as strong back in the day so the technique would have not worked.

Thanks for the edge tip Phillip. Your channel is what got me interested in accessorizing products with goat leather. It really is quite good where a supple touch is required, and less expensive. I've been using it for liners ever since. More than likely I'll try this out where edges come in less contact first. Interior edges perhaps. ~ 🍺👍 Cheers!

The concept looks interesting for a low wear area. When do you think you might have more info on the edge paint you were developing?
The edge paint development has come to a halt unfortunately. Too expensive to have produced

I see the prices leather workers will (and have) paid for tools/products, and think that the world would beat a path to your door for that product despite the price. Please let us know if you ever license the idea to a manufacturer (Seiwa, Fenice, Uniters, et al.)

Really cool idea never seen anyone do anything like this before. I bet it would look great if you folded and glued the flaps down assuming your also lining each side hiding the flaps and stitched it down. Useful for certain projects I'm sure.

Hehe. Me personally whenever a strap or belt gets the sides damaged, i fine sand it with paper around 2000 grit and then give it a couple of rubs with saddle soap, seems to finish better than any of the products i have. Greetings

It look nice ona 3mm edge but i wonder if this work on slimer edges.
By the way what are you using to split leather ? Do you have a industrial splitter ?
I am really considering buying a mechanical splitter but i am no sure of the reliability of it.
Not too sure, I haven't had a chance to try out slimmer edges yet. I use a bell knife skiver to split a strip of skin.
I have a craft tool 806 hand splitter from Franklin.co.uk, under £200. Iv had very good results up to 4 inches wide.
Nice idea and no doubt useful - did you try using water based contact eg Ecostick 5019N or Reina or even one of the Japaneses white PVA based adhesives although unsure if any are waterproof?
Rubber based adhesives like the ones you listed didn't work well. I wouldn't use anything that wasn't waterproof personally.

Seen it before. It is pretty much the same as wood vennering. A lot of wood techniques carry over to leather well.

how do you misuse PVA glue in leather work?
A number of ways. Not mating both parts while the glue is still wet. Using it like a contact adhesive by waiting for it to become touch dry. Not clamping thick pieces together. Not applying to both surfaces on dry or absorbent leathers. Not pre-priming on highly absorbent leathers. Not abrading surfaces on smooth leather to allow for penetration etc etc

how are you just finding this out when every single leather product manufacture has been useing this technique for centuries
Could you please provide examples of this exact technique in use by a product manufacturer? By the sounds if it, your list should be extensive.

If you're happy slapping one layer of edge paint on and calling it good, I agree. But tell me that after the 4th layer of edge paint with an hour in between for drying time and sanding. Can you tell I don't like edge paint lol?
