I was given a snail back when i was just a little kid, by a blacksmith i was watching at a festival we have called the Yankee peddler. I still have that to this day, and I credit it with being my inspiration to pursue this craft.
Found the video inspiring enough to give it a try. As expected, nowhere as easy as you make it look. The forge weld failed when I tried to cut the end off by the stalks. So the shell went flying. Got that put back together and finished it off ..... sort of. Have a lot of clean up to do. Not to mention my wife's assessment that his stalks look demented. Apparently that's possible. Lol. Awesome video!
As a suggestion, maybe make the shell from a fishtail taper, where one side is parallel with the parent bar and the other side flares to the side. Then, when scrolled, creates the sideways spiral that snail shells have. Wouldn't need to be a wide fishtail, just enough to get that sideways flare out. Although, pushing it out as you did does give a nice little rotation to the side of the overall shell that works also. Very nice figurine to add to your repertoire!!
Nice snail. Was one of the first things I'd forged. One thing I did tho was to make a really taper fishtail then scroll that up. A few taps on one side to get it flush makes the other side pop out nicely. They are fun little things so make.
Excellent video, good ratio of work sounds, music and explanation! No fancy style, it's all about the forging. Subscribed! I came from Torbjörn Åhman channel ;) greetings from The Netherlands
Pretty nice! Love the forge welded tail, looks very clean. Although, the impressive part to me is how you kept the thicker bit at the end of the antenna. Definitely shows a TON of hammer control.
Awsome snail ! ...you could make two more smaller ones like a little snail family with a wee slug at the back of all of them all climbing the gate following the big one ... are you adding leaves along the bars of the gate as well ? looks gate though always a pleasure learning new ideas .

I like this kind of video. Straight to the forging, let the work do the talking. Looks great, and am looking forward to seeing the gate!

I would have done a fishtail scroll for the shell, to make it the same on either side :)
