- Join me in as I make one of the biggest hammers i've ever made. This was an epic build and im super stocked with the end result. The hammer is for a customer based in Perth Scotland and is 27Lbs in weight! With the help of some good friends I think we made an exceptional bit of kit. The hammer is not meant to be swung but hit not sure why its so big but sometimes bigger is better.

Paul Beisler's a good guy, and that A33 alloy is really wonderful as a punch/drift/hammer because it doesn't need to be heat-treated like you expect. Making a stone-cutting tool is tough because the stone is so abrasive. The stone being soft, you'd think you could get away with a softer heat-treat, but the abrasive quality really eats away at the steel. If they're doing a lot of stone walls, I could easily see that hammer coming back to the shop in a year so it can be re-pointed after they wear an inch off the end!

So basically you're using Superquench in the heat treat.
Also, I *hope* they're using it more like a big stone chisel. Swinging that thing for a few hours would be "Hello and goodbye, Mister Rotator Cuff."

Man oh man is that a lot of work! Great job on the hammer but I can't even imagine how long it took to make that hammer. Well done sir!!!! And to your helpers too.

Hey Daniel, it's an awesome little piece of steel!
Don't worry about it's hardness, C45 is hardened to around 50-52 of Rockwell scale and files are usually up to 62 HRC, so the file would always bite a little into the C45 stuff.

Hi Dan. Your power hammer just has flat dies and seems to do fine with drawing out steel. Would there be any advantage to using combination dies with one half curved for faster (l assume) drawing out?

Splitting hammer...usually strike it with another hammer...
I used to have a 28lb Mundy Hammer. It had a Hammer face one end and a blunt wedge shape on the other. It was on a handle about 2 foot three long and was used by swinging underhand, to break up castings in a foundry. Not the sort of thing anyone in their right mind would swing overhead - other than youngsters displaying macho tendencies - A handful of swings and they were knackered, while old George would plod on with a 14 all shift and not break sweat.
