Tuomas' father passed while writing for the new album. This is a song of joy for a life well lived. Remembering all the everyday things in our lives that remind us of those we knew but still keep in our heart.
Lanternlight simply lights the pathway we are on. Not simply old, still used, will always be as a light. This is the last song of the trilogy of NW on the exploration of all things of LIFE, from a single grain of sand, to the snowflake on your palm as we all traverse the joy & pain of life. It, & we are timeless. The thousand days was an expression only! Never be literal in a NW song.
My personal song of the year 2024. Top 3 in my NW rating. Whatever guard you have up, when Floor's voice comes in she cut's thru it like a fresh sharpened butcher knife and get's you right into your soul and while your bleeding out you feel satisfied. When Floor goes into her emotional mode you can sleep in the finnish winter outside in the woods and still be warmed by her voice and feel comfortable. Much Love from Germany to you and your passionate reactions!
Lanternlight is breathtakingly gorgeous ❣️ Not able to listen to this with dry eyes, it goes straight to your soul. It’s so fragile and strong at the same time. What a gorgeous piece of music composed by Tuomas and so emotionally sung by Floor. Tuomas said that Lanternlight is a song of love to celebrate live of the people that passed. In this case mainly his dad. My favorite song from the new album followed by An Ocean of Strange Islands.
I have played the whole album many, many times in all its versions and this is my favourite song. It has become one of my top 6 NW songs. Watch David K's analysis of the video, for explanation of much of the videography. For info, Tuomas says the standout track is The Children of 'Ata. He also thinks the album is best heard from start to finish in order. I think I agree as it has what in classical music we might refer to as a cyclic architecture. One reviewer said: "Lanternlight" plays the role of concluding tear-jerker, but with a sincerity and finesse that gently reinforce the humanistic thrust of this whole record. Tuomas also says: "The whole theme of the album is time, history, humanism, mortality. And it has a really optimistic vibe going through it all." - I think that time and history element comes out strongly in this song. About Floor's voice: Personally I have always thought (unlike many) that Floor's lowest register, though she says it is most difficult for her, really shines as my favourite part of her range. It is like velvet. But when she first changes to the high register, after all that low register, it really hits and is a "tingle factor" moment for me. Troy is a perfect complement in this song, both in harmony and in his lead vocal at the end . Just a gorgeous, beautiful, heartrending song. This song is a love song to our forefathers - Tuomas started writing the album in Jan 2021 and his father died 6 Feb only a few short weeks later. This song is latgely inspired by that but the whole album is about our links to the past. So this one is full of references to past albums and other songs on this album. Its sbout all our ancestors still being with us: atoms and molecules recycled into the streams, the trees, the moss under your feet, the pebbles, the oceans In other words, the sort of lyricism I only find in Tuomas and in Jackson Browne.
Tuomas wrote this for his Father following his passing in 2021 - he said its not really a sad song but rather a tribute to and celebration of a life well lived, of those who lit the way ahead for us. I personally find it to be the most beautiful song I've ever heard, Floor conveys emotion ss only she can 🤘
Tuomas quote: "The last song on the album, Lanternlight, might fool you into thinking it's a sad song, but it's actually a love song and ends up on a very positive vibe. If you have somebody who has lived a very happy and a really long life, it's a moment of celebration and not of grief. This is the message we want to send."
Northward was an interesting one time project Floor did with Pagan's Mind guitar player Jørn Viggo Lofstad, most played song (very catchy Rock style): While love Died NORTHWARD - While Love Died (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) The band Pagan's Mind is also one of my favorites. This song would be a great intro, featuring singer Michael Eriksen (the Diplomat from Ayreon's "The Day That The World Breaks Down) Pagan's Mind - Eyes of Fire (feat. Michael Eriksen). Another great one is "Pan" the only time it was played live (at the virtual performance "The Islanders Arms" during Covid), 150000 tickets sold for this online green room show, revenues went to the Nightwish crew, about 50 employees that had no income because of cancelled shows during Covid. Nightwish - Pan (The Islanders Arms 2021) Or Floor at the age of 23 with her band After Forever during the (biggest Dutch) festival Pinkpop with "Beautiful Emptiness", the opening of their show, and what a voice at that age already After Forever - Beautiful Emptiness Live At Pinkpop Festival (2004).
Enjoyed your reaction! Final song from the final album of the trilogy (Endless Forms Most Beautiful, Human Nature, Yesterwynde) about humanity, science, and nature. It has bumped Shoemaker from the number 4 spot on my favorite Nightwish songs. This song feels to me like someone saying goodbye to family and friends as their life comes to the end. Loads of beautiful imagery in the lyrics of seeing the end, of reminding those we love that we will always be present, of lamenting the unfinished things we leave behind (as is always the case), and then walking "to the trees". Since Tuomas is famous for writing lyrics for multiple interpretations I could also see this song where the narrator is death personified, much like the way the lyrics in Music were. A third way I see it is that the lyrics aren't necessarily about a person but are instead a metaphor for humanity and our walk through the eons of our existence which would fit well with the themes of the album trilogy. A number of references to Auri and other Nightwish songs. "I am in the light and flood" and " I am in the four winds" IMO are shout outs to the Auri songs Light and Flood and The Name of the Wind, very beautiful instrumental that have a similar feel. For me the line "I am you who climbed off your back" gives me Decades in the Sun vibes and of course "To the meadows I go" is tapping into the same symbolism and meaning as Meadows of Heaven. Heartachingly beautiful song and a perfect bookend to the album and trilogy. Lore has that when Tuomas explained the lyrics and the meaning behind them Floor got super emotional and broke into tears. Floor has said it took several takes to record the song as she kept breaking into tears. If you look closely near the end of the video you can see Floor's eyes tearing up. I played this song for my 23 year old daughter and in the middle of the song she came over and hugged me so tight. A beautiful tribute to Tuomas's father and all that are the lantern light for our journey through life. I agree with Tuomas, if we have lived a life of joy and meaning then we shouldn't be sad at the end but celebrate a life well lived. I think this song and Epica's Tides of Time will be the songs for my funeral when I pass. Album starts with the sound of film projector starting up so fitting that the last song ends with it winding down. The Pope at the end is Pope Leo XIII. He is considered the earliest born person to be captured on film in 1896 at the age of 86. New bands you should checkout I would recommend Epica (Dutch Symphonic Metal Band) and Blackbriar (Dutch gothic/symphonic metal). Epica - Arcana their latest single. Music Video is great but I also love the official live release from the Symphonic Synergy concert in September from Amsterdam with a full orchestra, adult and children's choir. Their lead singer is Simone Simons, a beautiful Soprano, who is good friends with Floor. Founder of Epica was in Floor's first band After Forever before leaving to found Epica. Blackbriar - Arms of the Ocean, I'd Rather Burn, Mortal Remains. All music videos. Their lead singer Zora Cock has one of the most unique, haunting, and beautiful voices.
Pure Floor. I love this song. This song was Floor's pick for a single, it made her cry when she first heard it (I had the same reaction to this song, it's so touching). Nightwish is their own genre and no other band comes close to the level they are at. Never, in the history of music entertainment, have a set of skills and talent collided in such powerful manner. Tuomas is a true genius as a composer and with lyrics.

It's an ode to all of those that have passed on, and what they meant to us within our own family's.
