From what I've heard and read, this song is about the love we feel for those who have passed on, and how we keep ahold of the good memories and experiences from their lives. Instead of grieving for those we have lost, this song helps us celebrate them and reassures us that they are still with us in the natural world around us. "I am the secret stream, moss beneath your feet"; "meltwater, scent of spring"; "petrichor: the timeless". Everywhere around us, they are still here with us, celebrating our lives, as well.
At 67 years old, I have never heard a song as beautiful song! My mother passed at 90 years old in November of 2023, and this song is full of emotions. It's a masterpiece!
I agree. Sorry to hear about the loss of your mum. My mum passed away in May and I so wish that this gem was available to play at her funeral. I've been coping well but each and every time I hear this song it destroys me as mum was my lanternlight. Keep listening to and enjoying this phenomenal band 🙏😊👍
At 67 years young, I have listened to all the greatest vocalists from the early 1960's until now...and Floor Jansen is the most talented vocalist ever! Tuomas is the Mozart of today! I can only think of one other person with this amount of talent....and that is "Sir Elton John!" The two of them are in rarified air! Thank you Nightwish for bringing all of us such magnificent music!
This is like the Finnish version of Halloween. We don`t do tricks nor ask for treats. In those dark times of the year we remember and honor our loved ones who are no longer with us. We lit the candels in the lanters at their graves. Tuomas has got that feeling in this song. Love it.
Just when you think that Floor and Tuomas have reached every part of you "Lanternlight" comes along. I'm 58 years old and turn to jelly each and every time I hear it. The album "Yesterwynde" as a cohesive collection of songs gets better and better with each and every listen with the three early single releases as great as they are not getting in to my top 5... that's how good this album is in my opinion. For me its the best work that this phenomenal band has conceived and produced to date. Thank you John. 🙏😊👍❤️
A dedication by Tuomas to his father. We can all reflect on someone we have lost. Floor’s emotion is so beautiful. The last song on Nightwish’s new album Yesterwynde. I knew you would appreciate this song John - great reaction. 👏
Tuomas's father passed away in 2021. To me, this appears to be a song from the father's perspective. The people in the background are from a bygone era and are no longer with us.
Nightwish and Floor doin' Nightwish and Floor things. WOW. Straight to your heart. I lost my wife almost a year ago. We're in our mid 70s and we both fell in love with Nightwish and as time moved on we fell in love with the talent that is Floor. Carol would love this song so much. I can't listen to it without thinking of her. Damn, it's just beautiful.
This song is written by Tuomas, as a ode to hes Father that passed away in 2021, Floor sings absolute beautiful on this, and Troy hoining at end, perfect!! I lost my Father 6 years ago, and my mother 5 years ago, listening to this, will bring me memories of them, and a song of sadness, beauty and hope at same time, its a song i would consider a masterpiece, love it!!
This song is deep and touches deep. It‘s about the ones we lost but who are not fully gone. I`m in the light and flood I`m in the four winds I am the waves shaping pebbles flawless gems I am the snow on your palm When even Floor has teary eyes while recording the video …
One of the most beautiful songs I have heard in a very long time. Floor’s voice is mesmerizing here. Toumas is a master composer and orchestrator it’s mind blowing.
You felt the story without realizing it. This song is about the people we have lost on our journey. No longer with us, but never truly gone. Take care John.
check out the interview with Floor on the Charismatic Voice. They talk about this song and how the first take for her was basically just her crying, and the band has gotten used to that. Not to mention that she recorded the whole album in 6 days, 6 weeks after giving birth...
Not able to listen to this with dry eyes, it goes straight to your soul. It’s so fragile and strong at the same time. What a gorgeous piece of music composed by Tuomas and so emotionally sung by Floor.
Starting deep and low... This sounds like her solo album, I think Tuomas likes the variety of her singing. Floor said that she chokes up too easily with this song, the band rewinds, during the sessions, to let her recover. Mmm, the warmth of her voice. Reminiscences, love of the souls that have gone before. Tuomas wrote this in memory of his father. The pocket watch to wind... The old style film projector, a "Magic Lantern". The old flickering movies, like memories. Floor soaring away. Did you get the Tuomas déjà vu references? I am the snow on your palm [Storytime] I am the secret stream [Sagan, Shudder Before The Beautiful, Endlessness] Moss beneath your feet [My Walden] I am you who climbed off of my back [Our Decades in the Sun] Petrichor [The smell of fresh rain on grass, Last Ride Of The Day, Song of Myself] To the meadows I go [Meadows of Heaven] Then Troy drifts in with his soft voice, he made up the word, so his pronunciation, is our guide, _right at the end_ of the album. :)
and again it´s Troy with the last words on a Nightwish album :) i love this album, i extremly love the songs in the 2nd half, this sounds so matured Nightwish ( yes they get older too ) and i am a listener from the 1st moment they dropped their debut. i don´t know why Nightwish has so many Audio Engineers in its fanbase, i can´t find anything bad about the mix. i love bass, i had to reduce it in my car to about 10% ;) and one sure thing is, once you heard the songs often enough so that your mind, your heart sings it internal and THEN you have the power of what should be how loud ! eat this, Audio Engineering folks !
Thank you, John, for this reaction. I love Nightwish, their music is so beautiful. I love symphonic music, it's wakes all my emotions. I love it. This one was very different, very soft, about memories 😊. Very emotional ❤❤❤❤
Pure Floor. I love this song. Btw, this song was Floor's pick for a single, it made her cry when she first heard it (I had the same reaction to this song, it's so touching). Tuomas lost his father a few years ago and he wrote this song out of that emotion. The message is to enjoy life, as it's beautiful and should be celebrated instead of grieved when it ends.
Gonna have to share this reaction with my boyfriend -- he's a Nightwish regular, so he'll probably get a kick out of seeing what you think of their most recent work!
This new album is number 3 in a triology. As I understand it, the first album was "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" from 2015, followed by "Human. :II: Nature." from 2020, and now, the last one: "Yesterwynde", released in 2024. And please, correct me if I`m wrong 👍😊 And please excuse my english, I`m norwegian 😉
Hey John, great reaction. This song stirrs up so many emotions and Floor is amazing in this. If you want one from the album that is as you say heavy, fast and cinematic check out An Ocean of Strange Islands 😍 I garantee you’ll love it. This is the last song on the album by the way. In further listening to the other songs, I recommend you listen to the whole album in order, then you’ll understand the concept so much better.
- Lantern light is heavy emotion. -An Ocean of Strange Islands is heavy music. I’d listen / watch a reaction / review of Yesterwynde album - from beginning to the end - John you will appreciate the lyrics / poetry / deep & meaningful emotion / layered music with orchestra, choir & band.
A genuine real pleasure to listen to this for the god knows how many times in your company. Thank you. Another masterpiece from Tuomas and a tribute and ode to his father who passed away between the making of Human Nature and Yesterwynde.
Cool Reaction. Tuomas wrote this song. Floor has said, more than once, that Tuomas always challenges her vocal capabilities. Something she welcomes and always delivers. They are both so amazing
Not at all what I expected when I first heard it, but so beautiful. I keep putting off listening to the whole album because I want to find time to sit and appreciate the whole thing properly.
I completely agree with your analysis. There is a lot of fuss about the mixing but i don't agree with it. These old school metal fans don't understand what Tuomas meant. it's all about balance. Balance between instruments and vocals. Despite the emotions that this beautiful , beautiful ballad evokes, according to Tuomas, the song is not meant to be sad. But because the theme is so universal and yet personal, it evokes a lot
Very good reaction John, good to see you back with this band. Full concert suggestion? Wacken 2013 might be the Holy Grail of concerts with how perfect that show was, but also consider doing the 20 yr celebration tour, Decades 2018 live in Buenos Aires. Also a perfect show imo. Be good! ☺️🤘✌️💙
Floor Jansen’s Solo Album, “Paragon” - (An Independent release. Floor intentionally sought a distance from metal and rock). - “Fire”, 1st single released (last single on her album). - “My Paragon”, last single released (first song on her album). ** Both great have great videos. - Invincible, was originally written specifically for the Invictus Games, (description from Floors website : “this uplifting anthem takes on the important topic of PTSD and its effects on not just veterans, but all of us. But "Invincible" is more than just a song about a difficult topic. It's a message of hope, of strength, and of resilience. The lyrics, "Out in the rain / Stronger now / Stronger than all of the pain / Broken but beautiful" are a powerful reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always the possibility of coming out stronger. The song encourages the listener to "Master the pain / The cradle of your story / Changed by disdain / Starting life once more" and to find healing and self-discovery”. - Storm. Beste Zangers TV show - “Phantom of the Opera” with Henk Poort Evergrey - “In Orbit” Epica - Live Retrospect Show - “Sancta Terra” featuring Floor Jansen And many more. Enjoy!
This song is so good that it should be up for some kind of awards at the end of 2024 - not talking about in the US as they only know who Taylor Swift is

Nice to see I'm not the only one who noticed the "Rerum Novarum" Pope popping up at the end there. The start looked like something blurry with a flying machine. Might be the first flight in 1903, Wright Brothers. Detail: Pope Leo XIII died in 1903.
Please, listen to Nightwish new album Yesterwynde from beginning from beginning to end in the order it has been recorded. This new album is a story about live and the beauty of it. th-cam.com/users/shortskQFEAiBmG6c?si=nfnLC-7nPDQz2PHM This is link from the Nightwish TH-cam channel. Tuomas is telling us that it is actually a love song.
Thanks. Love your reaction. Not able to listen to this with dry eyes, straight into my soul. It’s so delicate, fragile and yet strong, powerful at the same time. I like this soft composition and the nuance. What a gorgeous piece of music composed by Tuomas and so emotionally sung by Floor. Sincerity at Floors performance and joined by the fragile and beautiful voice of Troy. At this moment my most played Nightwish song. Well done NW, love you all. If you like the softer singing then listen to Sleeping Sun (Nightwish, Floor) Live 2016 th-cam.com/video/pVPTUEW1PEM/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared , Shallow (Beste zangers 2019) th-cam.com/video/M68pe4a_9zk/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared, I don't know a thing about love (Beste zangers 2019) th-cam.com/video/ahykaAPHhs8/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared, and with a personal intro of Floor 'Our Decades In The Sun' - Live Vienna 2023 - th-cam.com/video/pDxY8IvOCeA/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared.
personally I don't understand why they keep Troy singing he can't sing it's ok if you listen to him once in a while but putting his voice here at the end after that incredible and touching singing display from Floor is anticlimatic and I also think this is so touching not only for the writing but also because of Floor great ability to communicate emotions. this was written because of Tuomas father death I think the lanternlight represents the faint light of each life which is destined to be estinguished. Anyway this is the slowest and most melodic song on the new album you can watch An ocean of strange islands which is classic Nightwish.
From what I've heard and read, this song is about the love we feel for those who have passed on, and how we keep ahold of the good memories and experiences from their lives. We all know her talents, that she can do it all, but still amazes me at least just how beautiful her voice is. This is hauntingly beautiful. 😊💚💜

Floor’s emotion is so beautiful.
The last song on Nightwish’s new album Yesterwynde.
I knew you would appreciate this song John - great reaction. 👏
So beautiful. 🤍
Boy can Floor deliver words into stunning emotions...
This song is officially my personal song of the year. Period.
Tuomas's father passed away in 2021. To me, this appears to be a song from the father's perspective. The people in the background are from a bygone era and are no longer with us.
Simply a masterpiece from Tuomas. And delivered on highest levels - attacks your feelings immediately.
Amazing...can't believe this doesn't get radio play in US. This band is a treasure!
Not signed to a U.S. label. Provincialism at its finest.
THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You feel the grief and also the joy of a life lived in this song straight from the first seconds. ❤
Bow Down to The Queen

I have watched and listened to Lanternlight many times since its release. It is emotional for me, but not for the usual reasons.
one of my favorite Nightwish songs. It hits me everytime and its a song i have to listen to everyday
This is a song I prefer listening to with my eyes closed. It's so beautiful and emotional.

What a way to close the album!
So good. Just beautiful.
🤘😎🤘
her voice and that piano really sets the mood reminds me of chopin or one of those classical composers
Great reaction. Floor is like a warm hug of love Cheers from a finn in Sweden
And that is called perfection
the fact that Floor is Dutch and singing in a Finnish band is so good and I am proud to be Dutch
a heartwarming masterpiece from Nightwish delivered by Floor’s brilliant voice … do you need anything more in life than that to feel sadly happy?
So sweet, so beautiful, so celestial... the best
Not able to listen to this with dry eyes, it goes straight to your soul. It’s so fragile and strong at the same time.

and again it´s Troy with the last words on a Nightwish album :)

Many Nightwish fans are over 70 years old (like me), so we certainly do.

I love this song so much!
if you like the way she sings here, you might wanna check out her version of "shallow" from the "Best zangers" tv show
Floor had to record all her vocals at home, lucy was 6 weeks old & Floor couldn't fly to Finland.
Tears, tears, tears that s al i can say.

If you like the softer singing then listen to Sleeping Sun (Nightwish, Floor) Live 2016 th-cam.com/video/pVPTUEW1PEM/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared , Shallow (Beste zangers 2019) th-cam.com/video/M68pe4a_9zk/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared, I don't know a thing about love (Beste zangers 2019) th-cam.com/video/ahykaAPHhs8/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared, and with a personal intro of Floor 'Our Decades In The Sun' - Live Vienna 2023 - th-cam.com/video/pDxY8IvOCeA/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared.
This was for Tuomas dads death
Thomas is intellect
personally I don't understand why they keep Troy singing he can't sing it's ok if you listen to him once in a while but putting his voice here at the end after that incredible and touching singing display from Floor is anticlimatic and I also think this is so touching not only for the writing but also because of Floor great ability to communicate emotions.
this was written because of Tuomas father death I think the lanternlight represents the faint light of each life which is destined to be estinguished.
Anyway this is the slowest and most melodic song on the new album you can watch An ocean of strange islands which is classic Nightwish.
Your mic is clipping, i can't enjoy your reaction as it hurts my ears each time you talk. Plz fix k thx.
Nice, but it's not the Nightwish I like.
Try to evolve with the band and don't get stucked...
Fantastic! Let’s be friends?
