I Spent $3,000 Building a Doghouse with a POOL

I went all out for this one! I built this modern lean-to style doghouse like a human home...it is full insulated, with insulation in the walls and insulation in the roof and floor. I used laminate plank flooring, and made my own plexiglass window. I used Trex deck boards for the pool deck, and a stock tank for the dog pool. The stock tank pool will serve double duty, since I can fill it with ice, and use it as an ice trough for beverages when I have parties up on my rooftop. I also built a green wall with a custom LED neon sign, which was the biggest splurge of the project ($400!). I also added solar wall fans and silver exhaust fans to help with ventilation and keeping the dog house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. All in, I spent about $3000 building my dog Tex a dream doghouse with dog pool. What do you think - was it worth it?

8:30 if you want it too stay cool in the summer you should've painted the outside white. The interior color doesn't really matter, since there wont be much light there to reflect or absorb anyway

Suggestion: If you can put up a couple of tall plants to increase the shade of the area that dog house is placed it will help keep it cooler. That brick wall + Dark colors on the dog house are going to absorb/reflect heat all day and for most of the night. A temporary solution would be a deck umbrella.

I agree. The pool needs shade. It's a shallow tub, so sunlight will keep it warm. No fun for Tex.

Wow 😮, I just watched Drew Builds Stuff building his dog’s house and then your video popped. It’s really nice to see how caring pet owners are. The pool was a great addition to help your dog cool down. Drew mainly focused on keeping his dog warm. I don’t have a dog, but when I do and depending where I live, I’ll follow your building plan or Drew Builds Stuff’s.

It can be tough to get a dog to sit in the perfect spot for a good photo. Let alone get them to look at the camera. I’m impressed with Tex’ modeling skills

My aunt has a so called “perfect dog” I didn’t know dogs could be spoiled brats until now she has about 10 pictures of him per day he does agility, he goes to the hospital for therapy sessions, everybody but me loves him, and he doesn’t like me because he’s jealous of me because she loves me more. Like wow. That dog poses for any picture if he sees a camera he poses

Suggestion: you could make gutters and the rain water would go to the pool it would be tough but awesome btw love the vide

Love your build! I would add some sort of protection maybe a plastic cover to those electrical bits inside the dog house just to be on the safe side in case your dog gets bored and decides to chew on that.
I might have considered is two layers of insulation since it looks like it would have fit, and that would have upped the r-factor a good amount. I think I would have also placed an interior ceiling to prevent any possibility of foam getting chewed, or falling and getting chewed.

The most entertaining building video ever.
While this was more of a "for fun" project, you have all the basic techniques used in building sheds pretty well nailed down. About the only thing I might have done differently was to build the window in the shop, as a two layer pane with weather sealing. Not a true insulated window, but significantly more insulated than a single pane.
It looks like Tex is enjoying it, which is the end goal. So, good work.
I agree, this is certainly more than enough for one good boy :) I think you got all the main points of concern, about the only thing I would add, is to consider adding insulation in to the voids at the corners before adding the exterior, but it shouldn't make a huge difference.

It definitely will. It'll cook the interior hotter than the actual air temp outside.

Great job - I did a similar one, except for access I hinged the roof on high side to be able to easily get into it for getting the bedding out for cleaning. The roof was pretty heavy, but in case of high winds I put a small latch on the roof. Made things a lot easier...
Loved the design overall, I'm glad you could fit in there, otherwise for someone like me I'd have had to hinge/hatch the roof to open it up in case I had to clean up in there. Also glad to know this was a challenge for charity
That's a great idea. I guess you could do some kind of deal along the top of the wall with latches to keep pressure on and keep water out.
As a four-times-per-week volunteer at our local animal shelter, can I just say WOW! Congratulations to Tex on winning the jackpot in doggo daddies! I hope Tex gets lots of use out of his swank pad.
Are you at all concerned about cleaning the inside the doghouse, considering it's a bit difficult for a human-sized critter to get into? Maybe hinge the roof for easier access? Or perhaps Tex is a very clean gentleman and it's not a worry.

3 of my 4 rescues came from really bad situations, the first 3 are so thankful. The 4th was deaf and pulled into an amazing shelter right away. I’m forever thankful she’s never known the hardship the other 3 have had to endure, but her attitude is completely different than the rest, takes everything for granted, not a problem, just amazing to see the difference. No, it’s not because she’s deaf, she’s my second deaf pup, one of the three was deaf, we use sign to communicate. Rescues forever.

This is an awesome idea. It's so nice to see how much you care about tex. Its great that you have lots of grass however on the decking and particularly in the penthouse, it's quite a slippery floor for dogs. This could result in Tex having quite significant joint pain in the future. Maybe some kind of memory foam mattress or carpet in the dog house to make it more comfortable for him and reduce that joint pain.
8:35 If you had wanted it to stay cool in the summer, you might have painted the outside a much lighter, reflective (i.e. white) color.

For sure cover the wiring on the inside so he doesn’t chew through it and a nice plush bed on the inside so he’s comfortable to sleep. This was a dope build.
I noticed that during the summer, our dog ignores all his dog beds to sleep on the kitchen floor tiles.
Now, that’s a man that loves his dog. Obviously, he’s single. Or…his wife hasn’t given him his latest “Honey do” list, yet. All kidding aside, you did an amazing job!

Oh cool- you painted it black in order to cook the dog, put down fake grass so all his piss & shit has somewhere to soak in, a pool to use as an open cesspit and algae breeding ground, and exposed wiring and foam insulation for the dog to chew on inside the doghouse. What a thoughtful owner...

Hello there ! great video, you are really caring for your dog ! Nevertheless, I can't stop but wonder why you paint the interior white and not the exterior ! Black paint is absorbing all of the heat, unlike white. painting white inside will not change a lot I believe, isn't it ? Also, puting a small guter could be cool to do rainwater catchment, either to fil the tub or a small water funtain for your dog (after filtration maybe ? not a water expert). On whole other lever, you already put solar, why not adding a small box to put a cooling system for the tub ? you could cool the tub for your dog during the heat waves and use it to cool beverages when you intertain ! Good luck for the rest of your projects !

Good idea for the tub! Regarding the black exterior... It's a balance of aesthetics and function. With the insulation I crawled inside on a 95° day and the inside of the dog house was at least 10 to 15° cooler with the fans moving air nicely through there
@@modustrial You are always fusing usefull with beautifull with your videos, so I understand ! The simplest way to know if the insulation is enough is to put a thermometer, you will know easily if it works as you intended. Just FYI, a french company is painting commercial roof white and the results are pretty amazing: the roof can be 59 fareinheit cooler and the interior 44, so it can be worth considering, maybe only for the roof. No mater what, I will follow the rest of your journey :) Thank you for the reply !

The dog house looks awesome! I'm sure Tex will love it. Question though - won't the black paint make the doghouse hot? Maybe housing works different, but I thought a black box would just make it even hotter in there.
Yep, and painting the inside white has zero effect on solar heat gain. I know he's going for a certain aesthetic, but the entire outside (including roof) should be white. Closing in the window will help get the space warmer in the winter (greenhouse effect), but it's going to make it hotter in summer. Creating a removable framed acrylic piece would've worked best for all seasons.

I feel like either the roof or a wall should have been hinged, or slid in place on tracks. Would make getting a bed in/out easier, and should Tex ever get sick and hide, you could get him out.
I'm actually able to get myself fully inside the dog house... Not easy but doable, as I had to do it to install the LED controller and power supply inside the house

One Christmas we all bought coats and boots for my sister's dog. He was having none of it. This summer I bought him a whole gel bed to lie on to cool down. Wound up using it myself, the dog wouldn't go near it 😅😅

Looks awesome. What a cool build. Also I think this could be scaled up to make a sauna and hot tub/ice bath. You could have matching rooftop houses. Again great build.
A single piece of acrylic for the window works, but it's akin to a glass house. Infrared heat can pass through it. The way around this is either tinted glass or acrylic that requires the frame be removed, or a sun canopy to sit out over the window and cast shade over the window. This also has the benefit of shielding the window when it rains so the window doesn't become weathered...
Aside from that... just a few basic things to note about windows I learned from replacing my rotted shed wood...
Flashing tape across the bottom of the sill, before glass panel installation, and half way up the sides will deflect water that finds it's way behind the moldings if the seals fail. The sill at the bottom is usually angled to allow water runoff away from the structure, but requires a divot or cut along the bottom that forms the 'drip edge' so water cannot run backwards back against the structure.
In this case all that deflected water will fall down to the wood beneath, but it looks like it's easily cut out and replaced. A sun canopy might help mitigate the issue.

I am not a home builder but I have spent considerable time in modular manufacturing and construction. The only things that stood out as "wrong" were the lack of flashing around the window. It has nowhere near the amount of weatherproofing it should have. Another thing a house would definitely need to have is a vapour barrier and more consideration of the building envelope. For a doghouse with a door that does not close, I do not think this is an issue, still way over-engineered!! Awesome work, if I tried this it would be no where near as well engineered :)

Haven't seen the full video yet, but I'm a bit concerned about heat inside the doghouse. If you leave it out in the sun, it might heat up like a greenhouse. Especially if you paint it black. I'm a complete layman, though, so chances are I'm missing something important. *edit* Ah, I see. Solar-powered fans. That'll get some air circulation going, so it shouldn't be a greenhouse :)

The black looks good. I was little surprised about white on the inside for coolness in the summer when the outside is black though. I suppose it's really no issue with the fans and the open door.

Have you considered for easy access to Tex's doghouse making a hot-tub cover lifter, that hinges to fold the roof over and back? Maybe one that slides back a couple feet then rocks up and back. this may seem a bit complicated but how often do you think access will be needed, unlike a hot-tub that is accessed often? Hope this helps!
