But water and tall green grass is predictably not fires domain. I sheltered in place on my land, with two creeks around the house and no wooden structures [ I built it just for that day] ] 30 houses around me in a 3 mile radius burned all night. I was the only one left standing. Took breaks in the water.

You did the right safe thing! I was in the "Camp Fire" in Paradise, Ca. in 2018 and the word we were getting from town officials said "don't worry, the fire is miles away" and bang, it was burning on the edge of town. It was traveling at the rate of 300 yards a second. We drove out with flames on the side of the road and lost everything we ever had in the last 40 years! And we were lucky, there were others whose cars caught fire as they were leaving and had to run to safety. And 86 or more did not make it out at all and burned to death!

We lived off Dean, near Pentz, Dean goes down to the river. Fire touched Dean rd first. The fire didn't burn 300yds a second. that is 900 ft per second. It was consuming land 2 miles wide at about 2 miles an hour. the calculation shows about one acre per second. 10,000ft wide, 4ft per second....40000sqft per second an acre.... (our place survived)

I was in a forest fire in Montana. I was driving back into a narrow draw when I decided to turn around. The fire was on the other side of the mountain but I felt it could jump over and trap me. They can move at wind speed say 40 mph. I spent a couple of hours driving out and became fearful and paranoid. I believe I had CO poisoning. After driving away for a couple of hours my head cleared and I found a campsite on a road to Bannock. All sorts of people had piled into there after dark. Like everyone running from the fire. Spent the night and went to Bannock the next morning. No further problems.

I had an experience with wild fires in Coachella Valley. I had a friend with a multi million house in Palm Springs. I had my boss in Palm Desert with two dogs and a medium income house. I was staying in Palm Springs and picking the dogs up in the morning (brining them to work) and returning them in the evening.
Well one fire came over Palm Canyon, the other came over Pinyon Pines above Palm Desert. I brought the two dogs to Palm Springs, even though my friend didn't want the dogs there. The fire never reached either home but I spent that night with little sleep. Even at my friends house I would have to rescue not only the dogs but also two parrots and about fifteen lovebirds, much less the artwork throughout the House.

Ya forest fires are nothing to mess with, one shift in the winds or the winds pick up and the fire could race in your direction while you're sleeping. At night it's hard to see the smoke or the fire if it's over a ridge. Best to exit while you still can safely.

The temperature indicator you're using probably won't be accurate on clear water. It's best used on solid objects and is based on emissivity. (the ability to emit energy as thermal radiation) Just use with caution because it will give you wrong temperatures, unless you set the proper emissivity. Don't get burned!

It’s always better to be safe when dealing with wildfires. I was a young man traveling to a job over 1000 miles away from my home and I was stopped at a road closure because of a wildfire. The sheriff told everyone that they were looking for volunteers to help fight the blaze, as the little town was in danger of burning to the ground. I stayed there for the remainder of the day and left to continue my journey to the project where I was supposed to report to. It was a great experience and the town was saved when the wind changed direction and moved towards an unimproved area.

Sarah you remind me of myself SO much... Unfortunately, i think Virgos have a tendency to overthink...most times its really not a bad thing, bc we always find the most practical way out of a problem...but sometimes it can be burdensome.... But just want you to know i relate to you so much.... Down to finding songs to fit the situation...to ways of saving money... To deciding if i would want to take a chance burning up in the middle of nowhere 😂... You made the right choice as far as im concerned..

Sarah, you need a probe thermometer to get an accurate reading of the water temperature. You're only getting a quasi-surface temperature reading with your handheld thermometer. ❤

Another stealth camper uses his propane fire ring in the campfire pit when there are fire bans, possibly depends on regulations in the area.
Would a stick thermometer be better for checking below the surface temperature? Surface might be cooler I've heard.

I think you did the right thing by being careful with yourself. You never know which way the wind will blow. Much love to you dear one.

Yes but the wind can blow onto the escape route just as easy.

Girl, trust your gut. If the wind would've shifted, you were in a tinderbox. All of those burned trees, especially being Pines full of matured sap, I doubt if you would've been able to make it off that mountain. Wildfires are ferocious these days! I think you made a wise choice.

Wonderhussy, you probably made a good move by moving because these wildfires can be so unpredictable. It is better to be safe than sorry and you can make it to burningman to sweat.
