New DIY Quail and Rabbit Cages For The Homestead

  • Here is what I call, the "Rabbit and Quail Tower". I have designed this after about a year of trial and error with my rabbits and quail, and tons of headaches! Both of these animals are what I view as the most efficient and most important animals on a small homestead, both for meat & egg production as well as creating fertility in the garden. I have been searching for the easiest, low maintenance way to house the rabbits and quail with the least amount of waste and I believe I have finally found it. It features pull out trays for composting, automatic feeders & waterers, and a sloping floor on the quail cage to allow the quail eggs to roll to the front of the cage and out.

Cool build, the only thing I’d suggest is to make small holes in the bottom of your feeders since the powder or crushed feed goes up their noses and that’s not good for them,! 🧚🏼‍♀️

It looks like you put a lot of work and thought into your build. I love watching different build vids and seeing how creative and ingeniouspeaple can be.
Well done !! The building and tweeking is half the fun.
    I love it.

Awesome looking cage. Wish I could get about 3 of them. Lol. I want a breeding trio of rabbits and quite a few quail. That would be awesome for breeding groups and grow outs. So you can keep a couple different types of quail.

That's why I use at least 3" tall lumber to attach the hardware cloth to for the floors. I also staple the hardware cloth underneath the lumber. The poop trays go at least an inch out on each side of where the floors end. This way, quail can't ever poop out the side or onto the lumber and the cage stays clean.

Very nice. I see you did your research before building this. I watched every video on youtube about cages before I built my first one (which is very similar to yours). I just built my second cage (3ftx12ft divided into 5 individual sections).
One thing I notice from the video is it appears the wire floor might be oriented the wrong way for the eggs to roll. The wire floor has wire strands running front to back and side to side. It looks like the strands running side to side are on "top". It would be better to have the strands running front to back on "top" to help the eggs roll better. But it seems you have your floor pretty steep so it might still work this way.
X2 on reducing wood around the edges My second cage has no wood under the wire anywhere so ALL the poop falls through. Nipple water's are the way to go. I have the same bucket /flaot as you. You have a very nice set up...

Thank you! Haha, I realized the wire was attached upside down after the fact and was really ticked off about it. I was like "oh well, fix it on the next cage". It is still working great, the quail have been in there for a week now. I'm surprised you were able to make that out on the video, and super impressed you caught it! I don't think many people are as "particular" as we are.

Had someone else asking about my cage so I just did a write up on backyardchickens. Maybe you might get some ideas for your next one. I'm planning on building another cage in a week or two, got some coturnix supposed to hatch tomorrow, my first hatch... I'm pretty excited...

How did you make a cage without wood floors? Can you send a picture of your setup?

I love the feeders specially the one made out of the garbage dispenser for the quails. Just wondering if the one pipe eating access will be enough.

Them rabbits will have fun chewing on the wood but you should get a year or two out of it.Next time put the wire on inside of frame work.

How will you stop the rats from getting in your quail cages? They will enter through your egg catcher and kill your quail and eat the feed.

    • @animalmansurvivor1452
      @animalmansurvivor1452  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Never had a single rat here before. All of the cages will be transferred into an out-building once it is complete, so rats won't have any access. This is not designed to be outdoors. Thanks for watching!

You stop that by making a cage lid to go over the egg basket/holder. That closes off entry into the cage.

There is too much slope on the bottom of the cage, you don't need that sort of slope to recover the eggs....

The rabbits are going to chew on that plastic and it will end up in your compost.

Very simply, put small board in rabbit cage for it to get off wire if it wants. Everybody seems to be raising rabbits on 1/2" x 1" mesh. Some coated, some not. Haven't seen an issue, yet.

That's so fcking cruel to not give these animals any option to get off the wire. If you don't want to put the work into it then don't get any in the first place.
