Al igual que otras especies de aves, en ocasiones las crías son parasitadas por una mosca que deposita una larva conocida como Philornis. "Es un género de alrededor de 50 especies de moscas de América Central y del Sur. Sus larvas son parásitos subcutáneos de aves enclavadas".
El Zumbador Verde es una especie endémica (única) de Puerto Rico. Mide de 11-14 centímetros. Su peso es de 6.6-7.2 gramos. Es común en los bosques del centro y oeste de la isla. La principal fuente de alimento del colibrí es el néctar aunque ingiere pequeños insectos y arañas.Un colibrí necesita aproximadamente de 6,000 a 12,000 calorías diarias en su dieta para suplir la energía que quema diariamente. Su metabolismo es el mas rápido entre todos los animales de sangre caliente. La hembra sola construirá el nido utilizando fibra vegetal, musgo, telaraña y su saliva; y lo decorará con musgos y líquenes. Pondrá de 1-2 huevos que incubará. Además se encargará de alimentar a los pichones. Los colibríes solo habitan en las Américas y existen alrededor de 343 especies. Grabado en Utuado Puerto Rico.

Estoy impresionada, nunca pensé q a las aves también se les pegaba esta larva. Pobrecito el pichoncito.
Lamentablemente muchas aves son parasitadas por esta mosca que deposita sus larvas en los cuerpecitos de las crias que aun estan sin plumas. Por lo general, las aves mueren debido a la gran cantidad de larvas que depositan sobre ellas. Afortunadamente logramos percatarnos del problema y logramos salvar ambas crias. acabo de rescatar un nidito abandonado de colibri o zunzun, que estaban llenos de estos parasitos, muy doloroso, uno murio y el otro tiene ya 7 dias, ya no tiene estas larvas... ojala se recupere y vuelva a su entorno.

Buen día ! Encontré un pichón de Benteveo de unos 15 dias de vida. En su jaula habia varios de estos bichos.
Lo revisé, pero no le veo ningún bulto, ni lastimaduras.
Estos bichos pueden hacer que el pajarito se muera ?
Una vez agarre un polluelo que se habia caido y lo deje en una caja cerca del nido, sin saber que tenia esas cosas, lo vigilaba a cada rato, y en un momento que me acerque a verlo vi como empezaron a salir, fue algo que hasta el dia de hoy no pude olvidar, todavia me siento muy mal cuando me acuerdo, y no pude hacer nada para ayudarlo

Estos pichones dada la gran cantidad de larvas con las que estaban infectados no hubiesen podido sobrevivir si no se les hubiesen extraído las larvas. Nuestra experiencia es que hemos encontrado varios nidos infectados y los que no fueron desparasitados, murieron.

Every time see one of these videos, I'm amazed. Amazed over the fat sice of these worms in those tiny creatures. I just don't understand how a tiny bird, or any other tiny creature can host that many worms, and survive. I agree, feed the "bastard" bck to the bird, so it can get its weight back 🐤🐥

mi pajaro murio por eso, no pude salvarlo es que nisiquiera sabia que tenia larvas hasta que murio, salieron todas instantaneamente, lo vi sufrir y morir. Nunca me olvidare de ese escenario

It survived most likely cause the larvae weren't fully developed. At full size they are thumb size and black. They would've drank him dry probably and afterwards hopped out and burrowed into the ground
