- One of the chicks brutally attacked and killed the smallest sibling. I've never seen such a vicious sibling attack. It was relief when the poor little guy died. There was no reason for it, a meal had just been delivered but it was ignored while the chick ripped apart his little sibling, treating him as prey and eating him while he was still alive. THIS IS GRAPHIC AND UPSETTING.

You can tell the largest is usually aggressive and they all instinctively turned away after the food was dropped off to show submission so they didn’t get attacked. Unfortunately it didn’t help the little guy 😖

The biggest sibling probably just figured in its primitive, primal mind that the smallest chick was simply unneeded competition. The other siblings could have fought back so they weren't viable victims, so the biggest sibling decided to eliminate the smallest one, to remove competition for food, to better ensure its own survival. Nature is cold, and cruel.
Sharks do this in utero..... Part of nature.... Don't forget NATURE IS GOD 🎉

But the aggressive one is the best of the lot. The one that has the best shot at surviving to adulthood. The one killed was weak and got killed for being the runt of the pack. It wasn't viable and nature has ways to deal with that.
This is a valuable lesson. Always fight back. Inflict some pain too. Let them know you bout that life too. I never understood how any living thing can let anything just simply destroy you.

It’s quite common for birds of prey to bully, kill and eat their smaller siblings. Often they will only eat one another if there’s a shortage of food which evidently there isn’t, so here I think it’s probably just trying to eliminate possible competition
Obligate siblicide: when some species will kill their siblings. No. Matter. What.

You can tell by how healthy they all look, it isn't about a lack of food.
They all acted like they knew as soon as mom left someone was in trouble and the other two didnt want to watch it happen.
They do not even fight back bruh
Did mom or dad just gave a feeding? It's rare for 4 or 5 chicks to thrive, especially if prey is not abundant, it's almost impossible for all to thrive, and many predator birds raid other predators nests as well, as it's impossible to both feed and guard the nest at the same time. Nesting, raising chicks is a time of very high mortality rates, high nest failures. More aggressive birds will take ALL the chicks of other birds to feed their own.

The one of focus is clearly the most dominant and extremely aggressive. Now I don't know much about birds, but I can recognize when an animal has made it clear that THEY are the boss amongst their siblings. When the food was dropped off, the one immediately turned and the others fled, which signals this isn't the first time something like this has happened. I presume the killing of the sibling from what I can gather from the comments, was an attack out of a bloodlust similar to the "excitement of the hunt". The other chicks turn away and avoid them because they'll be able to eat once the dominant one has had its fill.
Think of that one person with many dogs and they have that one dog they have to keep separate when feeding because it'll become so aggressive towards the others.

in fact it's super common in bird of preys that not all of the chicks will survive because of the rivalry among siblings, the oldest chick or strongest always will be agressive and dominant among the other ones
Even though it clearly took a lot of time and effort, it's still crazy that these helpless little things can do enough damage to kill each other

Thanks for not hiding the truth. Humans are often quite savage to other humans. Not all but some. I think when one is allowed to be a bully, they can reach d point of no return because they get satisfaction, pleasure, power, in going extreme because they can.
Human Bullying and War is just as disgusting. So is cold abuse and molestation. The remaining siblings did their best to turn away and deny what was happening. Did they do so because they were afraid of being attacked next? Or do their instincts tell them their sibling is psychotic and to defensively act as if nothing was happening?
Being blood relative isn't a guarantee of love, trust, in nature or humanity, sadly. Aggression and killing is passed to other generations in nature and humanity. A never-ending reality.
They act on instinct, aggressive chick is now feeding on smaller chick. I've never seen such determination and relentless behavior before. As for the others, there is no thought involved, they are not mulling this over in their head, they're not capable of these higher thought processes.

These goshawk nestlings aren’t capable of feeling sadness for the youngest chick. They have no concept of family or sibling loyalty. The very idea is laughable yet I see people doing this time and time again, especially in nest cam situations where watching a drama like this leads to all sorts of anthropomorphisms. These animals know fear and aggression and that’s about it.

I wonder what prompted the attack. Were they starving? He ate a little then quit. So I don’t know why it was so aggressive. I’ve seen this before and rarely does a sibling step in to help the one being attacked. It’s usually self preservation first.

They usually instinctively attack at the head and eat their way down the body. The little baby died of shock from skin and blood loss with catastrophic loss of body heat due to the skin loss. The littlest ones are at greatest risk. #1 chick off the hook in blood frenzy/lust, with a nice full crop when done. Goshawks are among the most aggressive of the bird of prey raptors.
No catastrophic heat loss involved, it's head and neck were being torn away.
@@thomasmleahy6218. Exactly, the nestling was scalped. That kills most animals including humans. Even though this behavior is normal in certain raptor species it’s still hard to watch. The attack seemed to go on forever, the chick’s death was horrific.
The agresor eaglet had a full crop when it started annihilating that poor little baby. It definitely wasn’t b/c it was hungry which is the most common reason for a sibling to kill another sibling.

And the other two siblings (wisely?) just go to the edge of the nest and stay out of the way. Also, is that another dead sibling already in the nest? Maybe this aggressive sibling has two bodies killed.
I think the aggressive one has been bullying all of them and imprinting it dominated that the other immediately turn their back from it..

No, that was prey that momma brought to the nest which inspired the oldest chick to do a bit of killing of its own.

Basically ... I have heard that the oldest chick has his survival genes kicked in now, and the youngest one looks the same size as the dead bird in the nest.. But alive and fighting... it triggers the older one.. to start to train on its hunting instincts... The 2 middle chicks are a bit larger and not as tempting to the older one.. But THEY do hear and see the older one on a rampage. And try to distance themselves a far as possible and lay low... If the parents came back 3 mins. earlier. The parents would not notice much and would not intervein. It only makes it better for the other chicks to have more food during feedings... And the mother may end up feeding the dead chick to the others... I have seen it done before... It is survival of the fittest... it is not any human feelings here...
The attitude of the 2 other chicks who turned away and go "none of my business, i dont see anything" is so similar to what happens in human cities around the world - someone gets mugged or stabbed and passers-by just look on, walk away or take videos instead of beating up the perps.

Look at the very beginning of the video - originally the dominant chick start attacking another one who was bigger than final the weakest target. So the choice for other two chicks was either him or one of us.
This is diffusion of responsibility. People are selfish. Everyone is the same.
The videoing is a new behaviour humans do when they would normally turn their backs, walk on or just observe. I am sure there are different reasons why we do this.

Amazing how thy can become cold blooded killers as infants unlike humans. They have this deep desire to kill and to show aggression, and selfishness. Fighting to become the dominant sibling. Why? because they are wild animals.
Yet people still believe that Animals are superior than humans in the terms of morality & Sanity, which is sad, considering this kind of attitude is what led to many brutal animal attacks on humanity.

I have seen young and juvenile Goshawks do this to Osprey chick's, even an entire nest full. I think they are beautiful raptors but I don't like them for their brutality. 😢

She (likely) has been attacking the little one increasingly of late, with increasing degrees of violence. The prey drop clearly influenced the timing of the killing, but probably more an assertion of dominance and innate drive to reduce competition for food. To your point though, it wouldn't be the first time confusion ensued after a prey drop.

I saw that with some bald eagles recently on the knf nest where the older one would actually instinctively attacked the ceiling before it even tried to eat or secure the fish

Parents are not feeding them regularly so He is big and needs to eat very often. Usually both parents bring food frequently.

They aren’t turned away because they don’t “care” about the youngest nesting, they are simply trying to survive. There’s no evolutionary advantage in fighting back. I know it sounds cruel but this may be how Mother Nature works. Eliminating the smallest/weakest extra mouth to feed, just increased the survival of the living siblings substantially. Even if the mom returned suddenly, I doubt that she'd intervene to break up the bullying to save the smallest chick. Sibling rivalry in the nest seems to be common amongst a lot of bird species.
God created all living things.. Glory goes to Him and Him alone. There's is NO mother nature. We did not create ourselves, nor did we create animals or any living creatures of that matter. We're able to procreate only and solely because of God. PERIOD.

Healthy chick? All other chicks there looked more developed than the two that died. I think they may have been sick.

Is that other one towards the edge of the nest the food mom/dad brought or is it another sibling the bully killed? I feel so bad for this poor little guy and he did try to fight back which I’ve seen other videos and the weaker chick kind of just takes it. Yes I know it’s nature but still doesn’t make it less upsetting.

There were four chicks in all including the one that was killed in the video. The mom had just brought in prey(bird) just as the video started, it was towards the middle of the nest

Honestly I’ve been waiting for the video that actually makes me not want to see a baby bird die, still haven’t found it… but this came close to it.

This is a quetion known as cainism in birds of prey. It usually occurs when there is a shortage of food and so the chick populations regulate themselves with respect to food. In this case it seems that they have food and it may be a simple question of aggression, very typical of the goshawks character.
The bigger sibling saw the smallest chick as a waste of resources. Its common in nature for the smallest bird to be killed off or abandoned simply because animals naturally assume its weak and won't survive. So to the older, bigger sibling it likely sees the smallest chick as unecessary competition, competition that can be removed easily
