Ferris had a knack for having a good time. He was known all around town. This is a great one. The principal is funny. Kind of like the coyote in the Road Runner cartoons. It is well worth the in time you spend.
Fun trivia: the Beatles version of "Twist and Shout" heard in this movie is not only a cover, but it's a cover of a cover. A group called The Top Notes did it first, then the Isley Brothers did a slower rendition, and **then** The Beatles did a version based on the Isleys' version.

To just call it "an extraordinarily valuable car" is to _detract_ from its value, a bit. I also see a much _older_ model car, there, in the garage that strikes me as probably a good deal _more_ valuable. Now, _museums_ keep inventory this valuable in stock, but not just under lock and key. Even in the '80's, with the most sophisticated alarm system in the world, they took it a step further. They secured it by keeping it under 24-hour _watch._ To do less than that with inventory this valuable is to _beg_ for it to be stolen.

With a mother like that, it's no wonder Jean turned out the way she did. When she did the emergency stop near the end of the film her mother didnt think that maybe she had done it for a genuine reason, in fact she didn't even bother to look up to see if there was a genuine reason. She just immediately started berating her daughter. If this is an indication of what the Bueller home life is usually like then no wonder Jean feels second best to Ferris. Now that he has sorted out Cameron's life, Ferris's next project shoud be getting better treatment for his sister and through that, helping her loosen up a bit.

I was 15 in 1986 when my friends and I saw this on a Saturday afternoon at the mall, then snuck into the next theater to see "Back to School" with Rodney Dangerfield. Oh the memories of hangin' out at the mall as a teen in the 80's. I'm 52 now and remember it all like it was yesterday. WOW!!!!! There was a small theater maybe 1.5 miles from my house. A couple kids would buy tickets then open the back door for rest of our friends. (about the same age, born in 1972) Those were the best days of my life. Not that things are bad now the '80s were just a magical time to be alive. 😁

The '80s were a very special decade for so many of us who lived through it. Amazing music, amazing movies and more, with none of today's nonsense. It really was the end of an era and I sure do miss it.
With a televised baseball game and jumbo screen, Ferris Bueller certainly counts as a warm up for baseball films Amelia plans to watch. Always need a good warmup game before the season starts. Delightful reaction and home run by Amelia!
I grew up in Wilmette, the south end of "The Shore" aka the North Shore. I've been to all those places they went. Looks like Ferris and Co. lived in the high-end part of Kenilworth or Winnetka, just a few streets back from Lake Michigan. I lived just west of the tracks. The ravine that swallowed up the Ferrari at the end was part of a feature we kids fondly called "the ravines." I'm not sure how far they extended parallel to the lakefront. You could hang out in the ravines, and no one could find you or ever know what you were doing all day. Fast Times at New Trier High. Fifty years after I moved away, I still have dreams set in that area. It's usually about trying to get out but I can't find a way.
So _Ferris_ lived in Shermer, Illinois (the fictional town where most John Hughes movies are set) but in reality the house, high school, water tower etc. were in Northbrook, Il (where Hughes lived as a kid, basically the real-life Shermer). You're pretty close in other words :).

But I do remember the trees near the shore were much bigger and formed a canopy that blocked most of the sky, so yeah, it must have been further west than where I said. Northbrook bordered the Ravines too I see on the map.
First reaction with Amelia. I came over from Criminal Content where Coby is hogging all the action. You are adorable and charming.😍 I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. John Hughes' movies meant a lot to young people in the 80s. He just seemed to "get" us. Also, he cranked out so much quality material in such a short time, both as a writer and director. All his characters were very human, and he obviously loved his adopted hometown of Chicago.
The outfit that Ferris was wearing, disguised as Sloane Peterson's dad, was similar to what Matthew Broderick wore in the live action version of Inspector Gadget. At least to me, thet looked similar.
Many people don't get the subtle subtexts in this movie. Ferris lived a charmed life. Partly perhaps luck, partly just plain initiative and intelligence and clever, but mostly confidence in himself he never doubts himself or his choices, he's just go go go. Perhaps a touch of the sociopath. Lol my favorite scene is the wicked smile.he gives the camera at the end. But then you have Cameron who has zero confidence, zero boldness, and struggling with mental illness because he was seriously depressed. Possibly on verge of suicidal. Ferris tried to save him in his teenage confident way, a day out. It was all for his bff. This movie still resonates too bc I literally saw a billboard somewhere a month or two ago saying in a world if Camerons,v be a ferris.vbe bold.
31 Flavors is indeed Baskin Robbins. I'm always surprised to hear it called that in those movie. Maybe a copyright thing but they call it 31 Flavors in Japan.

Having been a manager at Gino's East Pizza in Chicago, and also eaten deep dish at Uno's, Giordano's, and others in Chicago, I suggest you eat deep dish at Gino's East. I do believe the serve the best product. And, visit The Museum of Science and Industry. It sounds, on the surface, that it might be boring and specific, but I assure you it is neither.

All the characters who have cars, (except for Cameron's dad whos car license plate says NRVOUS) have license plates that are abbreviations of John Hughs movies. His Mom’s car has a license plate that reads “MMOM” which is a reference to 1983’s Mr. Mom which Hughes wrote. His Dad’s car has a license plate that reads “VCTN” which is a reference again to 1983’s Vacation. His sister’s car has a license plate that reads “TBC” which is a reference to 1985’s The Breakfast Club. Lastly, Principal Rooney’s car has a license plate that reads “4FBDO” which translates to “For Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. As you may have detected by the soundtrack, John Hughes was really into new wave music back then. All the posters in Ferris' and Cameron's rooms were his personal collection. Also not sure it's been mentioned, but a Fun Fact about this movie is that the actors who played Ferris' parents met during the making of that movie and ended up getting married in real life. My interpretation in the end when the sister rushed home to catch Ferris before he could get home so he would get in trouble. Then she overheard the principal telling Ferris that he would have to spend another year in high school. Another year with the two of them at the same school was the LAST thing she wanted, so she covered for him instead. If she wanted to cover for Ferris as a result of her chat with Charlie Sheen, she would have driven slowly to ensure he got home first after she saw him in the street. Keep up the good work.
One of the many films that proves that John Hughes was the 80s. There's just something about his understanding of that era that's impeccable in almost every iteration, and Ferris Bueller is near the top of the list of his best.
I've been to Chicago. Four of the years I served in the Navy I spent stationed up at Great Lakes; I got down to Chicago every chance I could. I like your comment about wanting a red car. For me, my dream car is a 1968 Ford Mustang GT-390 Fastback, hunter green in color, because that is the same car driven by my favorite actor, Steve McQueen, in the 1969 film Bullitt. I loved your reaction to Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I was 15 the year it was released, and it is still one of my favorites.
I am a firm believer in the theory that Ferris Bueller's Day Off, the Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles not only take place in the same universe, possibly even in the same week chronologically, but the characters (Farmer Ted/Brian, Samantha/Claire, etc.) are virtually interchangeable film to film. I also believe Claire/Samantha dumped Jake for Bender, that Farmer Ted/Brian ended up with Caroline, and that Andrew and Allison are still going strong. I also subscribe to the ancillary theory that Weird Science might also be part of this universe, with Anthony Michael Hall being the dimension-traveling random element.
Apart from the chronology, you know this is true right (or "true" at least :) ? It's not your head-canon or a theory in other words, almost all of John Hughes' movies are set in the fictional town of Shermer, Illinois and the high school in all the movies you mention (including 'Weird Science') is Shermer High. That was Hughes' canonical intent.
When I was a kid? I loved Ferris Bueller. But I watch it now? And he see every relationship he has? He manipulate's and controls evey relationship he has. His family, his girlfriend and best friend. The movie is still classic? But people like that in 2024 are not my style. And this was John Hughes best movie.
I got lucky, I had a company send me to Chicago for a couple days for a conference. On the first day over the travel time from California we didn't make time for lunch, and then Deep Dish is so massive it took like 90 minutes for our order to make it to the table, I thought I was going to faint I was so hungry. The pizza was delightful. After the conference our VP took the whole IT Team out to rent and ride Segways. We rode them from downtown to Soldier Field, on the way passing the start of Route 66. It was one of my favorite touristy days ever.

GOOF: It's awfully late in the day to have a full bus load of kids. 10. That same school was also used for "Uncle Buck" and "The Breakfast Club".
Being able to afford the fancy restaurant: Ferris and Cameron both have rich parents ( we don't know about his girlfriend ). Ferris has an expensive sampling keyboard, a nice stereo system, and a nice ( for the time ) computer.
In 1991 there was a short lived TV version of Ferris Bueller, probably inspired by the success of Parker Lewis Can't Lose. While It's fairly forgettable, in it Ferris' sister was played by "success is just a year or two away" Jennifer Aniston.

The parade featured toward the end is the Von Steuben Day Parade. Baron Von Steuben was a Prussian military officer helped train the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The troop of choreographed dancers is a salute to another classic Chicago movie- The Blues Brothers, which featured a similar scene with people dancing in the street. The parade is filmed in the same area as the scene in The Fugitive which takes place during an actual St. Patrick's Day parade. The fancy restaurant Chez Quis, is a pun on California pizza chain Shakey's- also a nod to The Blues Brothers who featured another fictional restaurant Chez Paul. The scene where Ferris hacks into the school computer is sort of a callback to his earlier film WarGames where he does the same thing. The greasy guy from OK Parking Garage and Charlie Sheen appear in another Chicago movie together - Eight Men Out, about the 1919 Chicago White Sox.
I don't know if it was inspired by this movie, but you may find this interesting... Someone created a computer program to deal with telemarketers that's similar to the doorbell trick in this movie. They took recordings of an old man saying generic lines that sound like half of a conversation, and wrote a computer program to play them in sequence. It answers the phone and says "Hello, this is Lenny.", and as the other person speaks, it waits for silence on the other end of the line, and plays the next recording. Each one is generic and vague enough that it really sounds like "he" is responding to what's being said. Eventually it runs out of lines, and starts over, but since there's so many of them, most people don't catch on for a while, or they just think that "he" is senile. At one point, there's the sound of ducks coming into the house and "he" says to hold on while he deals with them. Sometimes the calls last long enough that this gets repeated 2-3 times. I once listened to one that was a five-duck call. The woman on the end started getting annoyed at that point, "Oh lord, he's playing with the ducks again!" You can find a ton of the recordings here on TH-cam if you're interested. Just search Lenny Versus Telemarketers, and you'll find them.
Not true. It’s all about Ferris. Ferris didn’t skip school and get Simone out for Cameron. He did everything for himself. The film is about a kid that manipulated everything around him for their advantage. The “helping” Cameron was just him imposing his beliefs on how you should live on another.
No. The film is unequivocally Ferris-centered. Cameron is a foil, which by definition alone is a character meant to help illustrate the character of the protagonist. I think what you're saying is a critical component to Ferris's character's charming greatness, but every scene is about Ferris in some way. The side plots with Rooney, his sister, his parents, etc, have nothing to do with Cameron.
I have friends that went on a trip together to Chicago. They were going to go down route 66. Two had corvettes 2017, 2019. Another had a Hellcat. They parked in a parking garage when they got to Chicago. Next morning the Hellcat and the 2017 corvette were gone. They were able to find them and retrieve the corvette but not the Hellcat.
Wisconsin here, so I've been to Chicago a few times, not recently, for obvious reasons (It was quite a bit safer in 1986, at least during the day). Actually, Edie Mcclurg is doing her version of a stereotypical Wisconsin accent for that receptionist role. One of our goto movies for watching on Sundays while drinking bloody marys after a weekend of partying when we were in our late teens/early 20s. Great movie, great reaction.
The music in this film was cutting edge. There's some oddball pieces... Twist and Shout, Danke Schoen, I Dream of Jeannie theme. But the rest was all new-wave pop such as the signature "Oh Yeah" by Swiss electronic music duo Yello and other bands Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Big Audio Dynamite, The Flowerpot Men, Dream Academy, Zapp... John Hughes never released a soundtrack album because he thought the music was too obscure and no one would buy it. All the posters in Ferris room were from John Hughes personal collection... Simple Minds, The Damned, Cabaret Voltaire, Bryan Ferry, Charlie Sexton, Flesh For Lulu, Killing Joke.. and the lone picture in Cameron's bedroom of U2's War. John also had fresh music in his other teen movies Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, The Breakfast Club.
Great reaction to a great movie from my (first) senior year of high school! Though in high school I was much more like Duncan in another great (if less well known) 80s teen movie called Some Kind of Wonderful, I admit that some parts of my 1986 year could have been used for this movie. I, like Ferris, had a knack for missing school days (I was counted absent 52 days my first senior year and more than that before I dropped out my second senior year) and altering the school's computer records (for a business econ class we used the school's computer to keep track of orders, expenses, sales, and profits. I changed my dad's work number to our home number and the home number to an out of the way pay phone at a nearby strip mall. Since it was just me and my dad at the rental house and I could erase messages from the school off of the answering machine before he got home from work, it kept him from knowing what a truant I was), though my best friend was a good student and I had no girlfriend, so I just went roaming on my own. 😀 My dad didn't have a Ferrari, but he did have a very nice black Alfa Romeo that I'd occasionally use when he was out of town for work. 😀 In spite of all that I became a mostly responsible adult. 😛
ALL John Hughes movies must be watched! He fid kid movies and coming of age, like no one else! His apex was either Curly Sue, this, or Planes Trains and Automobiles! Pro tops, his dad is in Planes! And the assistant, and the teacher!
5:13 Ferris does a lot, in this movie, to thumb his nose at authority for the day, but I think _this_ is the only thing he does that's actually all-out _illegal._ All in all, he demonstrates a curious aptitude for coming closer and closer to the line without actually _crossing_ it.
I missed a couple months of grade 10 because I had surgery. Which included the first week of a new semester. There were a few new students in class. When I went back a couple of them were like who the hell is this guy lol.
Chicago deep dish pizza is amazing. My favorites are Lou Malnati's and Giordano's. I like both of those, depending on my mood. Others have different opinions. It's an experience, to be sure! Some folks from out of town who have never experienced it before don't seem to care for it, preferring more traditional flat pizzas. We have those, too. But sometimes the real meal of a deep-dish just hits the spot!! Be prepared to really like cheese, and sauce, and crust, and toppings: because there is a lot of everything in every bite!
Just imagine what that 250 GT would be worth today. Doubt they did the stunts with a real one but the showroom one looks legit. Good taste in cars Amelia, red ones always go faster.
This film and "The Blues Brothers" I think are the biggest love letters to the City of Chicago ever put on film. There have been some other movies set here (and many more filmed here, set elsewhere- like Chicago standing in for Gotham City, for example), but those two have showcased the local sights, attractions, neighborhoods, and flavor more than any other. They're both from the 1980s, and it'd kinda' be nice to have one more recently, to show off what our fair city looks like in the 21st century... If anyone else has opinion on that or other films that may compare, let me know; I'd be happy to add to my list.
Along with John Hughes, several of director Andrew Davis' films are set in Chicago too- most notably The Fugitive..starring fellow Chicagoan Harrison Ford (and about a dozen other cast members are from Chicago)

I grew up 20 minutes north of the city. Of course have had plenty of deep dish, but these days, that is mostly consumed by visitors. Tavern style is what the locals mostly prefer. Discovered that after moving back 5 years ago from living in small towns all over the country for 16 years. BTW, most of John Hughes movies take place within 5-15 minutes from where I grew up. lol The high school that Ferris attended is in our conference. And in the movie Risky Business, the movie theater that they drove by multiple times when Joel was in a car chase with "Guido the killer pimp", I saw the movie IN that theater. lol
Loved Risky Business. If you haven't seen Tom Cruise in his first big Hollywood movie I'd recommend watching the 1981 film Taps. George C Scott and Timothy Hutton were the lead co stars. Sean Penn and Cruise had their first success with Taps.

Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago. Those from the actual city usually consider us suburbanites "not real Chicagoans," and they have a point. But when speaking to anyone from another state, one just has to say, "I'm from Chicago," because nobody is going to know the suburbs by name. It's the same with any big city / metropolitan area: locals consider themselves of a very specific area, even down to the neighborhood or the block. But anyone not familiar with the area just needs a big city to go by.
Overtime, I've come to realize that Ferris is actually an anti-hero and Rooney is the beleaguered victim, trying heroically to protect the wellbeing of his students. Anyway, John Hughes was an entertainment icon for me growing up. His movies are often set in the Chicago suburban neighborhood of Northbrook, where he also grew up. I agree with a previous post - Cameron is the true hero. He comes into his own over the course of the film and by the end, despite or perhaps because of circumstances, you realize he's going to turnout ok.
Yeah, he recklessly breaks into a students home to 'protect the wellbeing of his students'. In what way are the students in danger by Ferris not going? If he can still legitimately pass his classes, what difference does it make?
One of my favorite fourth wall breaks is from the end credit scene of the Bill Murray movie Scrooged. There's a suggestion for Christmastime, if you haven't already seen it.
I'm sorry, but that is legitimately insane. The show is a thousand times better than the movie. Even counting the worst parts of the show, like season 6 and all of season one except the finale.
Fun film. Though the scenes with the Principal trying to get into a house to get to Ferris sure become even creepier since Jeffrey Jones was revealed to be a... well... y'know. Still, everything else is fun. :)

As a Chicago native, I must stress that deep-dish is overrated. The heavy crust drowns out the toppings. The best Chicago pizza is thin crust cheese (aka “pub-style,” rectangular instead of round)-ideally Vito and Nick’s on the South Side. Actually, the “Windy City” moniker has been disputed. One of the earliest origins has been traced to New York and Chicago's feud over who would host the World’s Fair circa 1900, and some New York columnist said that Chicago politicians were “full of hot air” and “windbags,” which evolved into “Windy City.” The other explanation is, of course, based on the harsh, cold winds that slam the city coming off of Lake Michigan. Those wintry winds, indeed, can be troublesome. When my wife and I visited my dad circa 2000, I took her downtown to show her the city (she’s a Texan) and wanted her to see the view like in the movie, atop the Sears Tower-----but it was too windy that day and they had to close the observation deck over safety concerns! The other classic Chicago film you must see is “The Blues Brothers” (1980). It’s got comedy. It’s got music. It’s got action, and a whole lotta blues, soul, jazz, and R&B jams and legends, with just as much Chicago attitude and as many sights and sounds as “Bueller.”
I didn't like how they portrayed Chicago cops as provincial dopes who wouldn't consider new evidence, though. Never good when you wind up rooting for the feds. Two Irish cops married into my Italian family, and they never would've been that reckless and crooked.
Deep Dish is usually meh, but it's better cousin Stuffed is amazing! Giordanos is the best chain with Stuffed pizza, but they gave up and just call it deep dish. It's still rare we get it in Chicago because Tavern Style (thin crust at any mom and pop place or bar) is Chicago's true best pizza. Hope these tips from your friendly fat guy help haha

Ferris had a knack for having a good time. He was known all around town. This is a great one. The principal is funny. Kind of like the coyote in the Road Runner cartoons. It is well worth the in time you spend.
Fun trivia: the Beatles version of "Twist and Shout" heard in this movie is not only a cover, but it's a cover of a cover. A group called The Top Notes did it first, then the Isley Brothers did a slower rendition, and **then** The Beatles did a version based on the Isleys' version.

This is a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder. To just call it "an extraordinarily valuable car" is to _detract_ from its value, a bit. I also see a much _older_ model car, there, in the garage that strikes me as probably a good deal _more_ valuable.
Now, _museums_ keep inventory this valuable in stock, but not just under lock and key. Even in the '80's, with the most sophisticated alarm system in the world, they took it a step further. They secured it by keeping it under 24-hour _watch._
To do less than that with inventory this valuable is to _beg_ for it to be stolen.

With a mother like that, it's no wonder Jean turned out the way she did. When she did the emergency stop near the end of the film her mother didnt think that maybe she had done it for a genuine reason, in fact she didn't even bother to look up to see if there was a genuine reason. She just immediately started berating her daughter.
If this is an indication of what the Bueller home life is usually like then no wonder Jean feels second best to Ferris. Now that he has sorted out Cameron's life, Ferris's next project shoud be getting better treatment for his sister and through that, helping her loosen up a bit.

WOW!!!!! There was a small theater maybe 1.5 miles from my house. A couple kids would buy tickets then open the back door for rest of our friends. (about the same age, born in 1972) Those were the best days of my life. Not that things are bad now the '80s were just a magical time to be alive. 😁

The '80s were a very special decade for so many of us who lived through it. Amazing music, amazing movies and more, with none of today's nonsense. It really was the end of an era and I sure do miss it.

With a televised baseball game and jumbo screen, Ferris Bueller certainly counts as a warm up for baseball films Amelia plans to watch. Always need a good warmup game before the season starts. Delightful reaction and home run by Amelia!

I grew up in Wilmette, the south end of "The Shore" aka the North Shore. I've been to all those places they went. Looks like Ferris and Co. lived in the high-end part of Kenilworth or Winnetka, just a few streets back from Lake Michigan. I lived just west of the tracks. The ravine that swallowed up the Ferrari at the end was part of a feature we kids fondly called "the ravines." I'm not sure how far they extended parallel to the lakefront. You could hang out in the ravines, and no one could find you or ever know what you were doing all day. Fast Times at New Trier High. Fifty years after I moved away, I still have dreams set in that area. It's usually about trying to get out but I can't find a way.
So _Ferris_ lived in Shermer, Illinois (the fictional town where most John Hughes movies are set) but in reality the house, high school, water tower etc. were in Northbrook, Il (where Hughes lived as a kid, basically the real-life Shermer). You're pretty close in other words :).

But I do remember the trees near the shore were much bigger and formed a canopy that blocked most of the sky, so yeah, it must have been further west than where I said. Northbrook bordered the Ravines too I see on the map.
First reaction with Amelia. I came over from Criminal Content where Coby is hogging all the action. You are adorable and charming.😍 I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. John Hughes' movies meant a lot to young people in the 80s. He just seemed to "get" us. Also, he cranked out so much quality material in such a short time, both as a writer and director. All his characters were very human, and he obviously loved his adopted hometown of Chicago.
Ferris' mum and dad fell in love IRL and married after meeting on this show. Charlie Sheen was awake for 24hrs before shooting his scenes.
The outfit that Ferris was wearing, disguised as Sloane Peterson's dad, was similar to what Matthew Broderick wore in the live action version of Inspector Gadget. At least to me, thet looked similar.
Many people don't get the subtle subtexts in this movie. Ferris lived a charmed life. Partly perhaps luck, partly just plain initiative and intelligence and clever, but mostly confidence in himself he never doubts himself or his choices, he's just go go go. Perhaps a touch of the sociopath. Lol my favorite scene is the wicked smile.he gives the camera at the end. But then you have Cameron who has zero confidence, zero boldness, and struggling with mental illness because he was seriously depressed. Possibly on verge of suicidal. Ferris tried to save him in his teenage confident way, a day out. It was all for his bff. This movie still resonates too bc I literally saw a billboard somewhere a month or two ago saying in a world if Camerons,v be a ferris.vbe bold.
31 Flavors is indeed Baskin Robbins. I'm always surprised to hear it called that in those movie. Maybe a copyright thing but they call it 31 Flavors in Japan.

Having been a manager at Gino's East Pizza in Chicago, and also eaten deep dish at Uno's, Giordano's, and others in Chicago, I suggest you eat deep dish at Gino's East. I do believe the serve the best product.
And, visit The Museum of Science and Industry. It sounds, on the surface, that it might be boring and specific, but I assure you it is neither.

Great reaction Amelia like always, love this movie its a classic, and some fun-facts about it. All the characters who have cars, (except for Cameron's dad whos car license plate says NRVOUS) have license plates that are abbreviations of John Hughs movies. His Mom’s car has a license plate that reads “MMOM” which is a reference to 1983’s Mr. Mom which Hughes wrote. His Dad’s car has a license plate that reads “VCTN” which is a reference again to 1983’s Vacation. His sister’s car has a license plate that reads “TBC” which is a reference to 1985’s The Breakfast Club. Lastly, Principal Rooney’s car has a license plate that reads “4FBDO” which translates to “For Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. As you may have detected by the soundtrack, John Hughes was really into new wave music back then. All the posters in Ferris' and Cameron's rooms were his personal collection. Cameron only has U2 Boy, but Ferris has Bryan Ferry, Simple Minds, Killing Joke, Blancmange, The Damned, Charlie Sexton, Jah Wobble/Holger Czukay/The Edge, Flesh For Lulu, Cabaret Voltaire, The Rave Ups. There is actually a band Save Ferris named of course, after the charity theme in this film. You can see them make an appearance in the movie 10 Things I Hate About You. Also not sure it's been mentioned, but a Fun Fact about this movie is that the actors who played Ferris' parents met during the making of that movie and ended up getting married in real life. My interpretation in the end when the sister rushed home to catch Ferris before he could get home so he would get in trouble. Then she overheard the principal telling Ferris that he would have to spend another year in high school. Another year with the two of them at the same school was the LAST thing she wanted, so she covered for him instead. If she wanted to cover for Ferris as a result of her chat with Charlie Sheen, she would have driven slowly to ensure he got home first after she saw him in the street. Keep up the good work.

One of the many films that proves that John Hughes was the 80s. There's just something about his understanding of that era that's impeccable in almost every iteration, and Ferris Bueller is near the top of the list of his best.

I've been to Chicago. Four of the years I served in the Navy I spent stationed up at Great Lakes; I got down to Chicago every chance I could. I like your comment about wanting a red car. For me, my dream car is a 1968 Ford Mustang GT-390 Fastback, hunter green in color, because that is the same car driven by my favorite actor, Steve McQueen, in the 1969 film Bullitt. I loved your reaction to Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I was 15 the year it was released, and it is still one of my favorites.
I am a firm believer in the theory that Ferris Bueller's Day Off, the Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles not only take place in the same universe, possibly even in the same week chronologically, but the characters (Farmer Ted/Brian, Samantha/Claire, etc.) are virtually interchangeable film to film. I also believe Claire/Samantha dumped Jake for Bender, that Farmer Ted/Brian ended up with Caroline, and that Andrew and Allison are still going strong. I also subscribe to the ancillary theory that Weird Science might also be part of this universe, with Anthony Michael Hall being the dimension-traveling random element.

Apart from the chronology, you know this is true right (or "true" at least :) ?
It's not your head-canon or a theory in other words, almost all of John Hughes' movies are set in the fictional town of Shermer, Illinois and the high school in all the movies you mention (including 'Weird Science') is Shermer High. That was Hughes' canonical intent.
When I was a kid? I loved Ferris Bueller. But I watch it now? And he see every relationship he has? He manipulate's and controls evey relationship he has. His family, his girlfriend and best friend. The movie is still classic? But people like that in 2024 are not my style. And this was John Hughes best movie.

I got lucky, I had a company send me to Chicago for a couple days for a conference. On the first day over the travel time from California we didn't make time for lunch, and then Deep Dish is so massive it took like 90 minutes for our order to make it to the table, I thought I was going to faint I was so hungry. The pizza was delightful.
After the conference our VP took the whole IT Team out to rent and ride Segways. We rode them from downtown to Soldier Field, on the way passing the start of Route 66. It was one of my favorite touristy days ever.
The trick with deep dish is the sauce has to go on top, otherwise the cheese would burn due to the long cooking time.

Being able to afford the fancy restaurant: Ferris and Cameron both have rich parents ( we don't know about his girlfriend ). Ferris has an expensive sampling keyboard, a nice stereo system, and a nice ( for the time ) computer.
In 1991 there was a short lived TV version of Ferris Bueller, probably inspired by the success of Parker Lewis Can't Lose. While It's fairly forgettable, in it Ferris' sister was played by "success is just a year or two away" Jennifer Aniston.
My parents used the recral thermometer to discourage the faking sick.

The parade featured toward the end is the Von Steuben Day Parade. Baron Von Steuben was a Prussian military officer helped train the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The troop of choreographed dancers is a salute to another classic Chicago movie- The Blues Brothers, which featured a similar scene with people dancing in the street. The parade is filmed in the same area as the scene in The Fugitive which takes place during an actual St. Patrick's Day parade.
The fancy restaurant Chez Quis, is a pun on California pizza chain Shakey's- also a nod to The Blues Brothers who featured another fictional restaurant Chez Paul.
The scene where Ferris hacks into the school computer is sort of a callback to his earlier film WarGames where he does the same thing.
The greasy guy from OK Parking Garage and Charlie Sheen appear in another Chicago movie together - Eight Men Out, about the 1919 Chicago White Sox.

I don't know if it was inspired by this movie, but you may find this interesting...
Someone created a computer program to deal with telemarketers that's similar to the doorbell trick in this movie. They took recordings of an old man saying generic lines that sound like half of a conversation, and wrote a computer program to play them in sequence. It answers the phone and says "Hello, this is Lenny.", and as the other person speaks, it waits for silence on the other end of the line, and plays the next recording. Each one is generic and vague enough that it really sounds like "he" is responding to what's being said. Eventually it runs out of lines, and starts over, but since there's so many of them, most people don't catch on for a while, or they just think that "he" is senile.
At one point, there's the sound of ducks coming into the house and "he" says to hold on while he deals with them. Sometimes the calls last long enough that this gets repeated 2-3 times. I once listened to one that was a five-duck call. The woman on the end started getting annoyed at that point, "Oh lord, he's playing with the ducks again!"

If you pay attention you'll realize this film is really about Cameron.

Not true. It’s all about Ferris. Ferris didn’t skip school and get Simone out for Cameron. He did everything for himself. The film is about a kid that manipulated everything around him for their advantage. The “helping” Cameron was just him imposing his beliefs on how you should live on another.

No. The film is unequivocally Ferris-centered. Cameron is a foil, which by definition alone is a character meant to help illustrate the character of the protagonist. I think what you're saying is a critical component to Ferris's character's charming greatness, but every scene is about Ferris in some way. The side plots with Rooney, his sister, his parents, etc, have nothing to do with Cameron.

I have friends that went on a trip together to Chicago. They were going to go down route 66. Two had corvettes 2017, 2019. Another had a Hellcat. They parked in a parking garage when they got to Chicago. Next morning the Hellcat and the 2017 corvette were gone. They were able to find them and retrieve the corvette but not the Hellcat.

Wisconsin here, so I've been to Chicago a few times, not recently, for obvious reasons (It was quite a bit safer in 1986, at least during the day). Actually, Edie Mcclurg is doing her version of a stereotypical Wisconsin accent for that receptionist role.
One of our goto movies for watching on Sundays while drinking bloody marys after a weekend of partying when we were in our late teens/early 20s. Great movie, great reaction.

The music in this film was cutting edge. There's some oddball pieces... Twist and Shout, Danke Schoen, I Dream of Jeannie theme. But the rest was all new-wave pop such as the signature "Oh Yeah" by Swiss electronic music duo Yello and other bands Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Big Audio Dynamite, The Flowerpot Men, Dream Academy, Zapp... John Hughes never released a soundtrack album because he thought the music was too obscure and no one would buy it. All the posters in Ferris room were from John Hughes personal collection... Simple Minds, The Damned, Cabaret Voltaire, Bryan Ferry, Charlie Sexton, Flesh For Lulu, Killing Joke.. and the lone picture in Cameron's bedroom of U2's War. John also had fresh music in his other teen movies Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, The Breakfast Club.

Though in high school I was much more like Duncan in another great (if less well known) 80s teen movie called Some Kind of Wonderful, I admit that some parts of my 1986 year could have been used for this movie. I, like Ferris, had a knack for missing school days (I was counted absent 52 days my first senior year and more than that before I dropped out my second senior year) and altering the school's computer records (for a business econ class we used the school's computer to keep track of orders, expenses, sales, and profits. I changed my dad's work number to our home number and the home number to an out of the way pay phone at a nearby strip mall. Since it was just me and my dad at the rental house and I could erase messages from the school off of the answering machine before he got home from work, it kept him from knowing what a truant I was), though my best friend was a good student and I had no girlfriend, so I just went roaming on my own. 😀 My dad didn't have a Ferrari, but he did have a very nice black Alfa Romeo that I'd occasionally use when he was out of town for work. 😀
In spite of all that I became a mostly responsible adult. 😛
ALL John Hughes movies must be watched! He fid kid movies and coming of age, like no one else! His apex was either Curly Sue, this, or Planes Trains and Automobiles! Pro tops, his dad is in Planes! And the assistant, and the teacher!
5:13 Ferris does a lot, in this movie, to thumb his nose at authority for the day, but I think _this_ is the only thing he does that's actually all-out _illegal._ All in all, he demonstrates a curious aptitude for coming closer and closer to the line without actually _crossing_ it.

Chicago deep dish pizza is amazing. My favorites are Lou Malnati's and Giordano's. I like both of those, depending on my mood. Others have different opinions.
It's an experience, to be sure! Some folks from out of town who have never experienced it before don't seem to care for it, preferring more traditional flat pizzas. We have those, too. But sometimes the real meal of a deep-dish just hits the spot!! Be prepared to really like cheese, and sauce, and crust, and toppings: because there is a lot of everything in every bite!
How cool is it to watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off with Tara Reid? Very, I say, Very indeed! ;-)

This film and "The Blues Brothers" I think are the biggest love letters to the City of Chicago ever put on film. There have been some other movies set here (and many more filmed here, set elsewhere- like Chicago standing in for Gotham City, for example), but those two have showcased the local sights, attractions, neighborhoods, and flavor more than any other. They're both from the 1980s, and it'd kinda' be nice to have one more recently, to show off what our fair city looks like in the 21st century...
If anyone else has opinion on that or other films that may compare, let me know; I'd be happy to add to my list.
Along with John Hughes, several of director Andrew Davis' films are set in Chicago too- most notably The Fugitive..starring fellow Chicagoan Harrison Ford (and about a dozen other cast members are from Chicago)

I grew up 20 minutes north of the city. Of course have had plenty of deep dish, but these days, that is mostly consumed by visitors. Tavern style is what the locals mostly prefer.
Discovered that after moving back 5 years ago from living in small towns all over the country for 16 years. BTW, most of John Hughes movies take place within 5-15 minutes from where I grew up. lol The high school that Ferris attended is in our conference. And in the movie Risky Business, the movie theater that they drove by multiple times when Joel was in a car chase with "Guido the killer pimp", I saw the movie IN that theater. lol
Loved Risky Business. If you haven't seen Tom Cruise in his first big Hollywood movie I'd recommend watching the 1981 film Taps. George C Scott and Timothy Hutton were the lead co stars. Sean Penn and Cruise had their first success with Taps.

Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago. Those from the actual city usually consider us suburbanites "not real Chicagoans," and they have a point. But when speaking to anyone from another state, one just has to say, "I'm from Chicago," because nobody is going to know the suburbs by name.
It's the same with any big city / metropolitan area: locals consider themselves of a very specific area, even down to the neighborhood or the block. But anyone not familiar with the area just needs a big city to go by.
Overtime, I've come to realize that Ferris is actually an anti-hero and Rooney is the beleaguered victim, trying heroically to protect the wellbeing of his students. Anyway, John Hughes was an entertainment icon for me growing up. His movies are often set in the Chicago suburban neighborhood of Northbrook, where he also grew up. I agree with a previous post - Cameron is the true hero. He comes into his own over the course of the film and by the end, despite or perhaps because of circumstances, you realize he's going to turnout ok.
Yeah, he recklessly breaks into a students home to 'protect the wellbeing of his students'. In what way are the students in danger by Ferris not going? If he can still legitimately pass his classes, what difference does it make?
One of my favorite fourth wall breaks is from the end credit scene of the Bill Murray movie Scrooged. There's a suggestion for Christmastime, if you haven't already seen it.

The blonde student, Simone, was played by a young Kristy Swanson. She's the original, (and in my opinion, the ONLY REAL), Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
I'm sorry, but that is legitimately insane. The show is a thousand times better than the movie. Even counting the worst parts of the show, like season 6 and all of season one except the finale.
Fun film. Though the scenes with the Principal trying to get into a house to get to Ferris sure become even creepier since Jeffrey Jones was revealed to be a... well... y'know.
Still, everything else is fun. :)

Yeah. Ferris may have just played a little hooky, but Rooney has broken several _laws._ He has _trespassed,_ he has drugged the family _dog,_ he has parked his car in front of a _fire hydrant,_ he has spent the better part of the day neglecting his responsibilities as the _dean,_ and he has probably broken _more_ laws that will occur to me after I give it some thought. He is in no position to go criticizing _Ferris._

As a Chicago native, I must stress that deep-dish is overrated. The heavy crust drowns out the toppings. The best Chicago pizza is thin crust cheese (aka “pub-style,” rectangular instead of round)-ideally Vito and Nick’s on the South Side.
Actually, the “Windy City” moniker has been disputed. One of the earliest origins has been traced to New York and Chicago's feud over who would host the World’s Fair circa 1900, and some New York columnist said that Chicago politicians were “full of hot air” and “windbags,” which evolved into “Windy City.” The other explanation is, of course, based on the harsh, cold winds that slam the city coming off of Lake Michigan. Those wintry winds, indeed, can be troublesome. When my wife and I visited my dad circa 2000, I took her downtown to show her the city (she’s a Texan) and wanted her to see the view like in the movie, atop the Sears Tower-----but it was too windy that day and they had to close the observation deck over safety concerns!
The other classic Chicago film you must see is “The Blues Brothers” (1980). It’s got comedy. It’s got music. It’s got action, and a whole lotta blues, soul, jazz, and R&B jams and legends, with just as much Chicago attitude and as many sights and sounds as “Bueller.”
Vito and Nicks makes the best frozen pizza as well. (The Fugitive is another great love letter to Chicago)
I didn't like how they portrayed Chicago cops as provincial dopes who wouldn't consider new evidence, though. Never good when you wind up rooting for the feds. Two Irish cops married into my Italian family, and they never would've been that reckless and crooked.

Deep Dish is usually meh, but it's better cousin Stuffed is amazing! Giordanos is the best chain with Stuffed pizza, but they gave up and just call it deep dish. It's still rare we get it in Chicago because Tavern Style (thin crust at any mom and pop place or bar) is Chicago's true best pizza. Hope these tips from your friendly fat guy help haha

Why does every reactor watching this film somehow do not get the fact that Rooney knocks the dog out with the vase of flowers, he did not poison him with the flowers or the candy.
