🤔 It's interesting. You seemed to give Phil more of a "pass" in the first part of his journey than I've seen from most other reactors, but then you were harder on him in the back end than they were.
I thought the mentioning of his bad behavior became tiresome. It was obvious early in the film that he was that sort of person. I almost felt as though there was some resentment of men going on here. I would have liked to have heard more commentary on the comedic aspects of his journey. I don’t understand how she thought this occurred over only a few days. He learned to play jazz-piano like a pro, ice sculpt, etc. One of my all-time favorite movies.
Fun touch 'groundhogging' us near the beginning with the looped remarks on the opening credits. 👍 Thanks for the reaction, glad to have found your channel. Good fortune!
Groundhog Day is one of my favourite films of all time, and I've seen it lots of times. I enjoy it so much, I re-watch it every February 2nd! I've always liked Bill Murray anyway, and this film is a lot more complex that it at first appears. There are so many layers to this film exploring themes about time and eternity, death and destiny, choice, self-realisation and development, etc, yet there's also romance and humour in there and overall it's a wholesome, feelgood film. Phil goes from scared to self-indulgent to manipulative to desperate to depressed, but it was only when he learned to stop being self-focused and genuinely started to care for Rita and improve himself for the benefit of others that he was released from the 'captivity' of groundhog day. You mentioned Phil's actions being about an ego boost for him, but in fact that was how he was earlier, when he was 'faking it'. By the time he was saving the falling boy and helping the old ladies with their car, etc, he had actually changed and was being genuinely helpful and altruistic. If you watch the extra commentary on the extended DVD, the director Harold Ramis (who also plays the neurologist in the scene at 10:53) says that Phil was probably stuck in that same day for many, many years, although as with much of this film (like why it happened in the first place), it's left to the imagination of the viewer. Sadly, Murray and Ramis fell out during the making of Groundhog Day and didn't talk for years (which is why Bill is not in the 'Making of' features), but fortunately Murray relented and they made up just before Ramis died in 2014. th-cam.com/video/2d7kkecft4w/w-d-xo.html
Chris Eliot (Larry/Roland) was on Late Night with David Letterman back in the 80s. He also had a short-lived sitcom called Get a Life, but his movie Cabin Boy is fantastic. It's pretty weird, but one of my all-time favorite comedies.
He was also a bit part in everybody loves Raymond, and his first part I can remember was a serious movie, the second Hannibal lecktor movie, Manhunter! The first being Brian DePalma, dressed to kill. And in Something about Mary!
I like the twist on “treat every day like it could be your last.” Perhaps, in this context, more accurately phrased as “don’t take tomorrow for granted.” Happy Groundhog Day!
I like the part where Phil gives the married couple wrestling tickets and the girl kisses Phil on the lips, then her husband kisses Rita on the cheek and the girl gets upset about that.
17:15 No, Phil. This was a mistake. You don't want the woman you're courting to feel like she's being courted by _herself._ Drink what _you_ want to drink.
Really liked this reaction! Most reactors have heard of the general premise so it was really cool to see a reactor who had no idea whatsoever what was going to happen and was truly going in completely blind.
That was Harold Ramis' ORIGINAL idea, based on Buddhism (where it's said to take 10,000 years for a soul to be perfected), but it later got dialed back to 30-40 years, and then calculated to just short of 34 years.
He would cease to resemble a human being after that much time. The 35 years estimate feels right. After 10,000 years he would have befriended, slept with, married, murdered and eaten every man woman and child in that town. 10,000 years is not something a human mind can deal with.
I've heard estimates that he repeated the same day between 35 years and 1000 years. It's said that it takes 100,000 hours of dedicated practice to become an expert at any skill. Some people dedicate their entire lives to mastering one skill. Multiply that by the number of skills he learned: piano, ice sculpting, French language and poetry, medical, every gust of wind, the details of the lives of every resident, etc. Then add all the days he couldn't drag himself out of bed, or how often he killed himself, or robbed the bank, or just tossed cards into a hat, or tried to drive out of town as far as possible. My guess is the lazy days would be 10 times more than the dedication days. There's one mistake that bothers me, though. At the end, the piano teacher shouldn't know that he's her student. If he had bothered to go for a lesson on that day, she would have said there's nothing she could teach him because he's already an expert. More likely, he stopped going as soon as he learned enough to practice on his own.
@@johnpaullogan1365 There was also the piano at the party, which happened every night for him. All he had to do was show up and he could practice as much as he wanted.
Hello Amelia! Shout out from the US Marine Corps! I love your reactions! This movie was one of my favorites as a kid! 02:06 Not this year! It's actually predicted to be an early spring! Hello! It’s a great movie with a really great subliminal message! I’m definitely looking forward to an early spring as well! Thank you for your service and Oorah! ❤️🤍💙💛
Great reaction Amelia like always love this movie its a classic. There some fun-facts about it, While different times have been mentioned over the years, is subject of much debate, the time Phil spent in his seemingly endless time loop. Some have estimated that Phil spent a total of ten years in his cycle. However, Ramis (The Director) indicates that the time spent was more like “30 to 40 years.” The film was not filmed in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, but actually in Woodstock, Illinois (just fifty miles from Bill Murray's hometown of Wilmette, Illinois). There is a small plaque that reads "Bill Murray stepped here" on the curb where Murray continually steps into a puddle. Bill Murray was actually bitten twice by Scooter, one of the groundhogs. The bites were apparently so deep that Murray had to received anti-rabies injections to prevent serious complications. Brian Doyle-Murray who plays Buster Green in the film, is actually the elder brother of Bill Murray. The two have previously co-starred in other features such as ‘Caddyshack’ and ‘Ghostbuster II’. Keep up the good work.
I stood at the top of the Wicklow Mountains at Ten O' Clock at night and saw the sun setting through the Glendelaouh valley. I saw the moon and Venus reflecting off the Mediterranean Sea like a mirror. I've seen a total solar eclipse that made me want to cry. Nothing compares to you, my gosh, you're not even from this world!!! Who are you??
6:36 "I mean, it's always six more weeks of winter." Yep. Because Groundhog Day is Feb 2nd and the last day of Winter is the Spring Equinox which can vary a little, but is always around March 20th, give or take a bit. So that's like six and a half weeks, literally, based on the calendar. I guess groundhogs don't bother too much with the extra half week.
What I think is oddly amusing is when he takes piano lessons, the teacher kicks out her prior student. That poor student will get kicked out over and over and over as he continues to takes lessons...
I have this theory that everyone in the town subconsciously remembers their interactions with Phil because the piano teachers considered him her student even though clearly she didn’t train this man in one day
6:34 "Six more weeks of winter." I mean, Groundhog Day is February 2 and Winter officially ends on March 18. So yes, that's a little more than six weeks. 🤷♂
8:41 Why did this happen a _second_ time? Phil, by now, has picked up on the fact that Groundhog Day is _repeating_ itself. He should've remembered that puddle.
Weatherman enters 2nd February with free will. Weatherman enters 3rd February with PTSD and living his life under conditions of permanent cosmic blackmail.
Lots of theories on your movie, but the one i think about is the ned ryerson theory. On the last day, he bought insurance from ned. Ned is the devil and Phil finally made a deal with him.
"When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn't imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter. From Punxsutawney, it's Phil Connors. So long." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Michael Shannon. Time Loop Fact: There are exactly 38 days depicted in this film, either partially or in full. The actual time Phil (Bill Murray) spends in his loop can only be guessed at. Art Imitates Life Fact: The idea of Phil Connors reading to Rita Hanson (Andie MacDowell) while she sleeps came from Bill Murray. His wife drank too much champagne on their wedding night and fell asleep early, so Murray read aloud to her until he too fell asleep. Location Location Fact: The film was not filmed in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, but actually in Woodstock, Illinois (just fifty miles from Bill Murray's hometown of Wilmette, Illinois). There is a small plaque that reads "Bill Murray Stepped Here" on the curb where Murray continually steps into a puddle. There is another plaque on the building wall at the corner that says "Ned's Corner" where Phil Connors was continually accosted by Ned Ryerson (Stephen Tobolowsky). During the Ned scene the sign for "Woodstock Jewelers" is clearly seen in the background.
How familiar are you with the TV show _Stargate SG-1?_ In 2000, they had an episode called _Window of Opportunity_ that had a lot of the same kind of humor.
Great Movie. I heard Phill stayed 10 years in the town. Fun fact the mayor of the town is Bill Murray real brother. Also there was suppose to be a scene that there was a witch who cursed Phil but they decided not to put it in and leave it open. Another movie with same time loop story but more serious and sci fi is The Edge of Tomorrow 2014 with Tom Cruise. Another great Bill Murray sarcastic comedy movie is MeatBalls.
If you like video games, there is one called "Shadow of Destany" or "Shadow of Memories" if you're in Europe, that has this type of reliving the same moments. It was fun trying to unlock the various endings. Someone should make a video game of "Groundhog Day".
Just a little movie trivia, Andie McDowell actually slapped him each time. Bill Murray talked about it in an interview, he said she didn't hold back at all with the slaps

why do so many reactors use such low volumes on the film part. I don't want to always have to wear headphones with YT volume at 100 just to watch stuff
Amelia, i think it’s safe to say you work in “the biz” from your comments. However, never link G&E together, that’s disrespectful even though we work closely together. The grips are the knuckle draggers that try to get you onto their truck to party. Not us. We tend to be more nerdy and less “bad boy” like the grips. The electricians (aka Lighting technicians, as we are now known as) are the civilized, non-malodorous guys and gals. That’s how you can tell us apart when we’re grouped together.
Why did the old man always recognize him? Why did he die in different ways? Why did phil call him dad and pop? Why does the bartender seem to know something? Some math folks on the net seem to calculate, for him to get good at everything he did, plus know people's histories, and know the town so well, and everyone know him, he was in this loop over 30 years. I say, 2 things had to happen. 1. A completely unselfish and happy day. 2. Rita had to give all she had, because she WANTED to be with him. The doctor guy, Harold Ramis. He and Murray worked together since late 70s, with Ivan Reitman and Dan Akroyd. Ramis hated Murray for his stuck up, misogynistic ways, but they did make movie magic together, with this, Stripes, Ghostbusters and other movies. Lots of writing producing directing acting etc., movies with Bill. Such as Stripes, Ghostbusters 1-2, and others. It was a story originally written, very dark, and him being in the loop like 10,000 years!😮😮😮 Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman, reworked it to make it a bit funny! But u must ask urself? Did he really leave the loop completely? He's staying with rita, in the town he knows everything about, he's going to live there, everyone else knows him extensively...also watch his movie, Scrooged! or worse thought, what if he became the owner or master of his own loop, and now everyone else is in it?😮😮 The real trick is this, the story was written long ago, and much darker. It's a psychology study. Think of every character in this, on screen longer than 3-4 minutes. They all have very distinct and different personalities. Who are u? Hannah is unchanged start to finish, like Rita. And Ashe? Just go back and listen to his comments because he is very much bad Phil!

Enjoyable reaction! Sounds like you have some industry knowledge, or at least some existing interest? Interesting also to see how your take on his behaviour at the midpoint and near the end was essentially the reverse of the 'conventional' interpretation.. unusual but each to their own 😊
Danny Rubin, the writer, said that, in the script, Phil relived the same day for 10,000 years. Harold Ramis, the director, tried to say it was less. However, since it isn't stated within the film, I go with the intention of the writer. He was the one who created the whole story. So I always go with 10,000 years regardless of any argument people try to come up with to say otherwise.
Phil basically was. He learned everything about everyone in town. Also, in the script, the way he kept track of how long he was trapped was going to the library and reading a single page from a book each day until he read the entire library.
@@Joker_JAK Interesting - how'd you get a copy of the script? Is it out there? I bought Danny Rubin's book "How to Write Groundhog Day", which his brother (who is an acquaintance) recommended to me.
I will be reacting to Ghostbusters in the very near future! I saw parts of it a very long time ago but I was too young to really understand it. So that’ll be coming very soon!

Nancy Taylor 😍😍
The kids were in school of course! 😉
It’s not funneh I’ve got schooooooool
It's thought that it's been 10,000 plus days. It takes 10 years to learn the piano well...
Great reaction!
Glad you enjoyed!
Heh, that repeating intro clip was a nice touch.

How’d he see his Shadow⁉️
How familiar are you with the TV show _Stargate SG-1?_ In 2000, they had an episode called _Window of Opportunity_ that had a lot of the same kind of humor.
How come the blizzard doesn't happen everyday?
Great Movie. I heard Phill stayed 10 years in the town. Fun fact the mayor of the town is Bill Murray real brother. Also there was suppose to be a scene that there was a witch who cursed Phil but they decided not to put it in and leave it open. Another movie with same time loop story but more serious and sci fi is The Edge of Tomorrow 2014 with Tom Cruise. Another great Bill Murray sarcastic comedy movie is MeatBalls.
*10,000 years
This is a real event, and takes place with the top hats and Punxsutawney Phil in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania
If you like video games, there is one called "Shadow of Destany" or "Shadow of Memories" if you're in Europe, that has this type of reliving the same moments. It was fun trying to unlock the various endings. Someone should make a video game of "Groundhog Day".
White chocolate is great!
3:47 I've never seen that show but I always hear people say Chris Elliot is in it. I know him from his old show Get A Life and his movie Cabin Boy.
The sarcasm is part of bills charm he’s a scamp
Just a little movie trivia, Andie McDowell actually slapped him each time. Bill Murray talked about it in an interview, he said she didn't hold back at all with the slaps
No, it's not like live each day like it's your last. It's live each day however you want because you know it will happen again.

I tried to like this reaction but I couldn't hear the actors.
When I set the volume for Amelia, I couldn't hear the dialogue.
When I set it to be able to hear the dialogue, Amelia was blowing out my speakers and my ears.
You guys really need to fix this so the host and the movie are similar volume.
Actually...for 2024 the groundhog says there will not be six more weeks of winter.
Great reaction! For more romantic comedy and more Andie MacDowell try Four Weddings and a Funeral.
please react to midnight run. a great comedy with much heart in it.
why do so many reactors use such low volumes on the film part.
He's staying with rita, in the town he knows everything about, he's going to live there, everyone else knows him extensively...also watch his movie, Scrooged! or worse thought, what if he became the owner or master of his own loop, and now everyone else is in it?😮😮
The real trick is this, the story was written long ago, and much darker. It's a psychology study. Think of every character in this, on screen longer than 3-4 minutes. They all have very distinct and different personalities. Who are u? Hannah is unchanged start to finish, like Rita. And Ashe? Just go back and listen to his comments because he is very much bad Phil!
Based on the skills he acquired I'd guess it was about a year
No, for almost 34 years he was stuck in the loop.

Harold Ramis said it took 30-40 yrs
Thank you. Your reaction was great. I'd like to see you do Lost in Translation, Animal House, Meatballs, Ghost Busters and Star Man. Thanks.
Star Man yes!! Great movie and I've never seen anyone react to it.
You should react to The Hitcher, from 1986. It's a fairly unknown gem.
Enjoyable reaction! Sounds like you have some industry knowledge, or at least some existing interest?
Interesting also to see how your take on his behaviour at the midpoint and near the end was essentially the reverse of the 'conventional' interpretation.. unusual but each to their own 😊
Ah man, you look like Kelly Preston. Another cutie pie. Yeah. Peace
Haha I don’t think I’ve ever gotten her before! I’ll definitely take it though! 😃
Please check out the Coen Brothers film, A Serious Man. (Dark comedy)
Does the popcorn have a pulse? based on what I endured of this reaction, not one laugh to one of the funniest movies, I would say no.
10:58 who are you gonna call, certainly not the Ghostbusters
I watched Punxsutawney Phil today. He did not see his shadow!
After 10,000 years, you’d think you’d have the time to learn everything. EVERYTHING. You’d be an oracle of knowledge in the other side.
Phil basically was. He learned everything about everyone in town. Also, in the script, the way he kept track of how long he was trapped was going to the library and reading a single page from a book each day until he read the entire library.
@@Joker_JAK Interesting - how'd you get a copy of the script? Is it out there? I bought Danny Rubin's book "How to Write Groundhog Day", which his brother (who is an acquaintance) recommended to me.
that van over there, its full if ham sandwiches
It’s from 1993.
Nice catch
@popcornroulettereactions It happens.
Can you please please react to the movie "Hard Candy" 🙏🏻🙏🏻??
Starring Patrick Wilson
ground hog see shadow 80% of the time...he only right about 35-39% of the time...
he did not see shadow this year...
Now, watch Bill Murray again in Ghostbusters series. Because Frozen Empire comes out March 22nd.
I will be reacting to Ghostbusters in the very near future! I saw parts of it a very long time ago but I was too young to really understand it. So that’ll be coming very soon!
In the first draft, Phil would spent 10.000 years in loop. Thet real account is 33 years and 350 days (12.395 days).
I thought you were British.
Today, February 2nd, is my BIRTHDAY! THIS is my BIRTHDAY MOVIE! It was great watching this with you!
Ironic because Happy Death Day is my birthday movie and it has a similar premise to Groundhog Day.
Love that and so glad you enjoyed! Hope you had a wonderful birthday! 🥳
@@Joker_JAKI’ve seen parts of Happy Death Day (haven’t watched all the way through) and I mentioned to one of our other reactors that I noticed how similar they were!
