Solo fall canoe trip in the BWCA Wilderness 2023, Kawishiwi Lake entry.

  • October moose calling and shed hunting in the BWCA. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a brooding, eternal land of elemental rock and water that beckons canoeists with the promise of wilderness and solitude. A place where it seems time has stood still for hundreds of years. A place that holds the possibility of sighting a moose on a portage trail, the tug of a lake trout on a fishing line or the sound of wolves howling at night. Join me as I leave civilization behind and lose myself for 10 days of paddling and portaging through this ancient land of majestic pines, crystal clear waters and ancient rocks in search of the icon of the North Woods, the regal bull moose in all his glory during the fall rut.

      @@nemadjihermitYes, EP37, August 22nd. Still trying to find at least one people to go with. But I'm willing to go solo. Just a bit concerned about food. I like to fish and would need to rely on catching an eater fish once a day.

    Just finished watching your 2023 Fall solo. Great video. After decades of going to the BW, this June I found my first set of Moose antlers. Great you found so many and got to see several Bull Moose.
    I know it's hard work making these. Hopefully, you will continue to do so.
    I noticed the ending credits show Wonder Lake just west of Sawbill. I might check that lake out this August returning to Sawbill on my solo.

      @@airmorse Thanks for the great comment. I just finished two back to back trips so I will have a couple of new videos out soon….I do enjoy making them not only for TH-cam but also for my own personal enjoyment.
      Bush whacking in the spring and fall has been one of my favorite activities for a long time and stumbling across antlers every once in a while makes it all the better.
      I fell in love with Wonder Lake when I discovered it a few years ago and decided to make it my spirit lake. It’s a beautiful lake with a great campsite and best of all doesn’t see a lot of visitors.

    I give you a ton of credit... I did a 2 week solo in September and could not get the camera work right, it started detracting from the trip and vibe so I stopped. Trying to release a 15lb northern, camera, waves was a mess lol. Great video as always

    • @nemadjihermit
      @nemadjihermit  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Lol…Yes trying to manage all of that can be a handful and I’m not always successful either. I just keep at it because I like the results and it’s nice to have a record of the experience. Practice makes perfect. I know what you mean about detracting from the trip, always thinking about camera angles and getting the shot does get tiresome and can feel like work. But reliving the adventure and putting together a coherent sequence of events once I’m back in the comfort of my home is pretty rewarding and it gives me an extra incentive to get out there and do more trips and who doesn’t like that…But anyways, thanks for the compliment and I’m glad you enjoyed the video.

      The other thing I was wondering was if that was a littlbug stove? I guess i have one other question 😬…. Sorry to hit you with so many questions but do you think it’s possible for a sit on top kayak guy like me to pick up single blade canoeing? I can tell youve been single blade paddling something since you were about 5😃. Ive been kayaking for about 20 years and the biomechanics of it are very soothing for me.

      No worries.. it is a littlbug stove. It works great and I absolutely love cooking with it.
      As for paddling with a single blade vs a double blade the only thing I can say is just get out there and start using one. I kayak and canoe and I don’t have any problems switching back and forth. I think you’re pretty much using the same muscles.

      You’re welcome and thanks for the comment. That’s a great area to get into the heart of the boundary waters. Yeah, hit the gym and put on about 50 more pounds of muscle. I’m of the opinion that you should just slow down and enjoy the portages as much as the lakes, there is plenty to see there as well. If you feel like you’re in a hurry you have two choices, either allot more time for your trips or don’t be so ambitious.

    Awesome video catching the colors and beauty of the BWCA especially for the ones that have never experienced it in person. This is about as close as it gets to being there. I've only been to the BWCA once with a group of 4 traveling from Missouri in June of 2022. This next year and I plan on doing my 1st solo in the fall of 2024 and in that same area you were in this video. What was your route on this trip? I'm guessing you entered at Entry #37. Where do you stay the night before you enter?? Looks like you must of entered very late in October by the looks of the foliage. Did you see much traffic beings it was so late in season? DId you have any luck fishing?? Lots of questions but I'd like to learn from the best! Thanks so much for sharing your adventure!

      Thank you very much for the kind words. This trip took place in the middle of October and I only saw people on my first and last day. I felt like I had the whole place to myself. I didn’t do any fishing on this trip. I only live few hours away so I can be on the water before noon when leaving from my house. My entry point was indeed #37, but on this trip I’d rather not give specifics on my exact route out of respect for the moose and to keep my shed hunting locations under wraps, they were hard earned. Besides it doesn’t really matter where you go in the BWCA, it’s all beautiful no matter where you go. I’m glad you enjoyed the video and received some value from it.

    Excellent video, thanks for sharing! I've had several summer trips, but a late fall trip looks beautiful. What were the temps? The only logistic I havent worked out is the footwear - I generally wet foot during travel and it would be too cold for that in the fall. Are those rubber boots tall enough to keep you dry? I seem to have been over my knees a few times this year!

    • @nemadjihermit
      @nemadjihermit  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the compliment, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. In the spring and fall there’s always a chance of bad weather, I have experienced snow few times, so you need to plan accordingly. But the beautiful weather, lack of bugs and fewer people makes it worth it. When the water is cold I do wear rubber boots, you do have to be careful about not going over them but it does happen. In my opinion fall is the absolute best time to visit the Boundary Waters.
