    This video inspired me to go out to my firewood pile and find a nice almost flat piece of cedar to start working. I've been out in my garage with the hand planes for about 2 hours now. I've got a ways to go but I think it's turning out nice.

    Ive been watching you mill logs for a long time and enjoy seeing the grainin the boards. This is the first time I watched you make something useful like the charcuterie boards. Awsome display of how you go about making them in batches. I learned the steps to make my own boards thanks for an excellent teaching class.

    Matt,
    I love it. I’m a creator of artisan charcuterie along with a good friend for our own use. Your boards are beautiful and perfect for the fun side of displaying thinly sliced charcuterie Coppa, Brasola, salamitties, prosciutto etc. Fun stuff salute 👍🏻🇺🇸

    Great job as usual Matthew, beautiful firewood. Just a suggestion, if you throw that piece of noskid you use when sanding in the wash with a load of blue jeans it’ll be a lot more grippy, like when it was new.

    I am really happy you did this. I have been watching a lot of sawmill videos recently trying to learn all I can and so many sawyers toss so much wood in the burn pile that can be used for smaller items than a slab table. It could be sold as is to woodworkers even. Maybe not for much but to pay the fuel bill!

    my week before christmas gift for everyone is brazilian cumaru coasters. Ive made 60 of them, only 18 are actually finished so far, 3 sets of 6.
    They are end cuts from some amazing teak hard wood flooring I installed. I preserved the flooring finish on the top and routered out the bottom for feet and rounded off all the sides. Finishing wax and done.

    These look like a good project to batch out. Seeing your “batching” process helps. This year I batched out turned ice cream scoops for the first time. It was a real learning process because batching things out is a lot different than just making a single item.

    I was told by an old timer, as a rule of thumb for drying out wood to work with, you should allow around 6 month for every 5 to 6 inches. So, if you have a log that is 12 inches in diameter, you should wait 12 months before using for any projects. That's why it's a good idea to build up a supply of wood so you can have some ready to use.

    There's one thing left in woodworking that I don't understand:
    How does one make this type of product such that it stays flat in changing humidity?
    For example: Where I live, last years annual average humidity was 70%. If I air dried the board and sent the gift to Alberta, it would dry more over time and distort.
    The same happens vise versa, when kiln dried hardwood is imported to the island, it absorbs moisture and deforms.
    in house humidity is equal to outside humidity during the warm days, but on winter days it drops to 20%. I made a workbench out of flat sawn lumber in my workshop. When I started have a fire in to warm the place up, that bench would not stay flat no matter how hard I tried. So I collected quarter sawn pieces and made a butcher block bench.

    Hello! I am not a wood worker, I play guitar, acoustic, which is perhaps where my love of wood comes from. I do not have a sawmill in my backyard, the idea of getting my fingers anywhere near one of those things terries me! I'm going to subscribe to your channel, because it is so blatantly obvious you love what you are doing. that's enough for me and then had your honest sense of of "funny".. I had to watch this again as I want to make some myself. I did notice you have a USPS tote in your shop. Don't get caught with it. The PO is pretty firm on fining people with them at $200.00/ tote. I'm a retired PO inspecter and handed out my share of tickets. But seriously if you only have one or two they usually let you pass and ask that you return them. I've gone to homes with literally a garage full of USPS totes. It adds up to millions of dollars each year and being a private company, that is a lot of money. And that is just the totes!

  • @fpoastro
    @fpoastro 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    For the fun of it, It would be an interesting exercise given the comments with regards to making some extra cash to apply some values to procuring/sawing the slabs even though they are slabs and could be gotten for free. The machine and shop costs of the processing. Abrasives, the finish, wax, cleaning th shop, and marketing/delivering. Would be interesting kick around some approximate total cost per unit out of the shop. Im sure it would vary wildly from region to region but comparing to a wholesale/retail price range.

    • @mcremona
      @mcremona  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      it certainly would be. probably much easier for someone who runs a production shop to throw some numbers at.

    • @fpoastro
      @fpoastro 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mcremona To the contrary I think it would be far more beneficial to nearly anyone to apply some basic numbers to the process so they can get an honest accounting of what their true costs are for items coming out of either a productions shop or a home shop. They both have nearly the same costs and overhead but of course completely different accountings with regards to profitability.
      The point was moreso to wonder about what is the retail value of the board in varying marketplaces in comparison to the cost to get them out the door. Gifts are always wonderful and something where any form of accounting is typically secondary. Brand recognition aside, the question was more to the point of 16 minutes a board in labor, adding another 10 minutes a board for the other "stuff" puts each at 26 minutes out the door. Given a retail, or selling them wholesale, scenario,... what is the cost of that 26 minutes to cover overhead?
      And a further honest question, what does a surfaced and sanded "slab" with finish command at retail at various retail marketplaces around the country ? I could imagine in an urban area or with some established branding it could be higher than one would expect. Then I wonder in a rural-ish environment where most anyone would see such items as stuff they put in their woodstove daily in the winter, they would pay far less if at all.
      In my world 20-30 minutes a unit out the door would head towards a retail price of $60-$80 if selling them wholesale. If selling direct it might be a few dollars less but not much accounting for packaging, delivery/pickup, collecting and paying sales tax, and so on.
      Its always interesting to hear how people account for their "costs" for a given batch of work.
