Hi Dave, a great demonstration of this tent in action thank you. Great to see you actually measure wind speed and see the tent perform in real world conditions.. As you know wind is probably a tents greatest challenge and I hear so many reports of certain tents being out in so called wind speeds when the truth of the matter is that the wind speed actually experienced at the tent is way less than forecast..Few TH-camrs are also testing tents in some form of consistant measured way, so fair play to you for doing it. People are going camping with a false sense of security due to this and this puts their safety more at risk... Great also to see in the comments that many have ordered this tent.. Compared to a Hilleberg Soulo its very competitive and anyone thinking of a Soulo I am sure will now consider this tent at a much lower cost.. Best wishes Tom
You know Tom, I often don't believe how low the wind is reading myself. I have been in a measured 50 ➕️wind and its pretty distressing, never mind pitching a tent. But I know on Lukes mountain 30 plus is the starting point.
It's just the beginning but my confidence in the new Vern 1 is increasing all the time. Will be great to see some other tests appearing on YT.

Great to see a first proper test of the new Vern 1 and also really enjoyed your initial ‘show’ of the tent with a down to earth and honest delivery. Super excited to be receiving mine very soon.
I also had the same issue with Sea to Summit mats getting cold spots and promptly moved the black winter one on and replaced for the NXT. I did however keep the silver one for warmer seasons as I personally found it to be the most comfortable one I’ve used as an active side sleeper.

I’ve changed my view. Weight vs knowing is important in winter particularly if you are travelling. Excellent film sir. Also interesting you had the Fjern event jacket on. Trialled my green one on Dartmoor at the weekend. It was evil. Excellent jacket for the money. Less sweaty than my goretex 3 layer. Thanks for the excellent content.

About time people stopped fussing on measuring every gram. a shelter should be chosen on the expected conditions. if a shelter is built for stormy conditions but has heavier duty materials thats fine.
its when a shelter is heavier but crap you should start worrying.

I know I'm late to the party and so many have already aid but that tent does look like a Soulo killer in many ways. Similar looking strength and about half the price (boom!). Slightly heavier but not by much. Love the twin doors allowing you to adjust for wind direction plus get panoramic views when the weather allows. I wonder if new souo will come out with twin entrances?
I like the venting but I am concerned how that might be affected by heavy snow fall or snow build up. Not that the UK will offer much of that.
I am in Japan and mountain tents here often feature an air sock/tunnel like protrusion from the top side or back, to aid with ventilation, especially when the outer fly is covered with snow at the bottom, effectively sealing it in.
As for seam sealing, I think Nortent use a special thread that expands when wet so that kind of helps seal the seams a bit. Possibly different to Hilleberg (using cool jet to try to shrink the needles to shrink the holes they make as it's sewn?).
One thing I noticed was I think Nortent recommend putting the cross pole up first, so its under the 2 lengthways poles. I noticed yours seemed to be over. I'm not sure if that will make much difference. I have the same dilemma with my Soulo and in have heard Hilleberg say it doesn't really matter.
Another difference between this and the Soulo (sorry to go on but people are going to compare these 2 tents as boy, are they similar!) is that the soulo has the option of the red and black label tents, the latter meaning stronger poles and fabric but heavier at the same time. I think this Vern 1 has the option of doubling up the poles? I wonder how the fabric will hold up to extreme weather that requires double poles.
I also like the fact that there are more pockets in here. Hilleberg doesn't give many options in that regard. Also love the built in clothes line. A lot of nice touches to the tent that make it very attractive.
Just the weight being a negative but if you want a solid tent that can take bad weather plus is built like a tank, then you are going to be in the 2.5kg category unless you want to spend mega bucks or forego some functions.
I suppose all those guy lines needing much more space to peg out might be limiting for some pitches like mountain top cliff edges, etc but for most of what the UK offers, it looks fantastic for 4 season weather.
It looks like overkill until you need it and then you are glad you took the effort to carry it!
I was cursing bringing my soulo up llyn y fan fach in the beacons on new year but boy was I glad I did when the wind was screaming at me through the night.
Now, if they come out with a 3 season mesh inner, then that would be awesome.
I am too scared to ask about 'tent fish'.
Hi, thanks for the detailed comment. Travelling to Japan is definitely on my bucket list. As regarding the rest, yes I agree on all of your points.
Check on a video by Scott Thompson as he does a good comparison to the Soulo and the Vern. Though I dont hold much hope in hilleberg making an updated Soulo as change seems not to be their thing, unless you know different!
Tent fish 'found me' on a lake district hillside many years ago and always like to come on camps. You can't ask about tentfish, as tentfish does his own thing and just 'is'.

Very good test for the tent. Got to say though, I found it scary just how close you had that stove to the flysheet... I envisioned it ending in tears at any moment! Glad it didn't.

When you walked up on that Soulo it looked as solid as a rock! So did the Vern when you tensioned it, both awesome, Im looking at a Vern 2, my use is for my 4WD overlanding, I get into remote areas of high winds in NZ South Island high country, your need a good 3season like MSR or Hillberg, possibly a 4 season tent is overkill but I would rather have more than less and I have had some rough times in less, I been camping since I was a kid, army and adventures ever since, usually not always I'm in a spot for a night 2 at most, depends on the location I get to. Sometimes with our 4wd club have a Easter trip planned long distance for example multiple nights many locations! Or mostly on my own, I did have my dog with me for my current 2person tent, but his time ended at the start of this year, his lour last trip together after 17years together he was a month off 17 years old. Now its time for a new tent that one I have had since 2017, I have others big and smaller, but not on this level, so time to step up to the big boys level, I'm 55 and while I'm not into glamping I want more stability in winds, less faff, no concerns about tent strength durability or water resistance! I have watched your V2 vid and a couple of the V1s, the price is very attractive and Nortent say 4-5 days to deliver to NZ which is amazing as its very hard to get anything good this good for value (still up there but not Hilleberg up there) So its prob # on my list, I have it in the checkout ready to go with extra pegs, footprint and stove window, something the Hille doesn't offer, I don't need it, but he thought maybe id try a stove sometime as well and its future proofed). That all said one thing I do notice from vids only is with the Hille they have really nice tensioner guides on the ropes for guy tension and the pole sleeves for tensioning the poles, and the peg loops look on Hille also highest quality, something I always notice as superior to any other brand I have seen! The Nortent look plastic, the peg loops will they be durable?
So questions do the tensioner straps seem or look and feel as strong easy to use and comparable to Hillebrg?
Are the guy rope tensioners on par or better quality and ease of use, Hilles are very good in this respect?
And do the peg loops look like they will hold up to as you know pegging cops allot of abuse?

Hi there, there is no need for metal tensioner nowadays. The Nortent ones are fine. Yes the pegging points are good. The mid panel elastic ones will fatigue over time, but these are easily replaced. Enjoy the tent in NZ! Thanks for commenting. ATB

Would love to see a comp VS one day this a 2P Hille vs the new Vern2 and the MSR Access 2 also a readily available tent here and reasonable price! Have you heard of AB camping here in NZ? he inspired my obsession with Hilleberg, but now I have one with NT as well, maybe its my Scandinavian blood, also my causes my love of outdoors lakes rivers and mountains and forest and sea! A very informative test especially the pack size reduction. As someone considering this tent for multi day hiking I'm pondering using an ultra light stuff sack for some additional grams off the total.

Tent seems to work very nicely. I would definitely love to get one. I was even looking for the 2P version, but that thing is heavy and unsuitable for a backpacking imho.
Nice test. Looks like it did as well in the wind as I would expect with the pole design. I have the PC version and its performance in the wind is very impressive. Also nice to see it tested in the rain before seam sealing it to get a better idea of the quality of the sewing. All things pointing to this being a pretty impressive tent Enjoyed the video 👍 ATB

@@Fellmandave1 I really love how silent the PC version is in the wind and the fabric feels fantastic. It performs better than any other breathable single skin tent I’ve used, however you absolutely have to think about the conditions in which you pitch it. I was very unlucky the first time I camped with it and experienced pretty bad condensation but the conditions were horrendous for condensation (camping on snow with no wind and rain all night). Any wind helps significantly though. The silnylon version is a welcome addition. It’s just a bit nicer not having to worry about condensation as much in a double wall tent.

Certainly does in their own specifications. 20 for the New Vern 1 and 24 for the Vern 2.
This looks to be a grand tent. Fine as a go-anywhere tent for UK backpacking, but it comes at a weight penalty for those who prefer something lighter when conditions permit. My Scarp 1, by the look of it, isn't going to perform as well in the nastiest conditions, but then I avoid such conditions if I can, so the c1kg weight saving is worth it to me. I see this appealing very much to those who need something for serious weather and don't want to pay twice as much for a (slightly smaller) Soulo!
Good to see you measuring the windspeed with a proper instrument. It shows that 30mph is quite some windspeed, and confirms that those TH-camrs who 'guesstimate' usually wildly overestimate.
No problems with my XTherm (Reg) either - it's all I need for anything outside the warm season (when I use the XLite). Again, you make a valid point about ground temperature being relevant.
But, if I may voice one criticism, I still wouldn't cook inside a small tent, even on something as stable as a remote canister stove (my winter option and agreed much safer than a canister-top) or my usual alcohol cone. At most, I will open the outer door wide and cook under that space. Flare-ups and clumsy accidents can and do occur, as I learnt the hard way when I torched my tent some years back in wildest Knoydart.
And you're also right about the 'hiking meals'. Overpriced junk. You can make much better yourself from supermarket ingredients at a fraction of the cost.

Well said David. The cooking thing in the vestibule is definitely risky. But in the video it looks closer than it felt in reality. Overall, not recommended and perhaps I am getting complacent, so a timely reminder my friend.

Lots of people comparing this with the Hillebergs at a cheaper price but what about the long term durability and support.
If you bought a soulo 5 or even 10 years ago you can still get replacement items for it.
Are Nortent still going to support the previous Vern 1 or will they no longer produce spares for it.
Interesting how they have also released a 4 season tent at virtually the end of winter so chances are this wont be tested properly till next winter
Its a very valid point and time will tell. The good news is a four season tent can be used in 4 seasons. I am not sure where you are located but there is still lots of winter left.
I also got the vern 1 but not had the chance to use it, its strange as there have been one of two reviews lately and they have shown the poles have snapped and bent in high wind of around 50 mph but then other people have not had a problem with them.
40mph with a buffer of up to 50 is the way to go. But, gusts and winds are so variable eh.

When this passed I contacted Nortent and they are now saying that even though I am in the first batch list I should have a tracking number by Tuesday Wednesday next week.

Hi Curt, the storm star is £100 more. Some good issues and some not so good ones. The fly on the SS does reach far enough down, so spindrift comes in and the door plus vestibule is really low, so quite pokey. really stable though.
My Storm Star arrived in Scotland from the USA in 6 days, no customs duties (they take care of that), and no bloody seam sealing! It cost £520 including the footprint, gear loft and delivery in the recent sale. Prior to the Storm Star I was using the Hilleberg Jannu, plus a plethora of other tents over the past 20+ years.
Was the thermarest a wide? How did you feel the length was? Were you able to keep from touching the sides of the tent?
Hi HB! Yes, the mat is a 25" wide. I personally was able to keep from touching the sides, the mat had light contact with the sides at one corner, possible to avoid though. I don't think a wide long would be a good fit though.

I am hoping to get the Nortent vern 1, 2024, or a couple of them. I am wanting to set up a walking, hiking, wild camping group to help with staff mental health and well-being. Working on the frontline can be very stressful.

As always, an enjoyable watch. But I have to ask, since your initial video did not quite cover that. If you were 5cm taller and perhaps a few shoe sizes larger, how would you fit in it lengthwise? Is it long enough to fit a 190 cm sleeping wild camper with clown sized feet 😊 ?
Cant see it being a problem, but the squirty flower could be an issue.

Both are great in the wind. Not sure about the difference.

Between the Hilleberg Soulo and the Vern 1 which has the most useable length internally? I'm 197cm tall with size 13 feet so normally I'm over the size limits for a lot of these one man tents.

@@Fellmandave1I’ve got one of these tents, I’m 6ft 2” and have size 12 feet. Length wise and width wise, this tent is fine, however it’s not high enough for me, to sit up in, so you will definitely find it too small height wise!
How do you think it compares to the storm star
I am contemplating a comparison on these. The stormstar is quote a lot more expensive now and has quite cramped doors. Great tent though!
hey i noticed you camped next to the Gorse and wondered if you've see any evidence of Snakes as i had it on good authority that Adders where on increase at least on the hills in Scotland according to park rangers however the weather of late has turned with colder temperatures and this may effect there prevalence but when conditions where cooler some years back they where as stated said to be "on the increase"..So the question is has anybody seen any Adders of late?

Being cold-blooded, reptiles need sunshine to bask in for a while to get going at all, and they hibernate over winter (which it more or less still is in Northern Britain, the days are only getting started here in Grampian, for example). Your best bet for finding an adder in the hills is to be near South facing rock on a warm day, which isn’t that often to be truthful. The ‘ulterior motive’ is the more likely explanation for the parky’s ‘warning’. It’s a ‘tragedy of the commons’ thing, fuelled in part by, er, well, we won’t get into that now!

Can anyone recommend a nice cosy tent for me. 😂 I'm off my head looking at tent reviews. I'm 46, I'm pretty fit and healthy and starting to hike, with plans of climbing as many munros as possible this year. I'm 5ft and dont want to be carrying a big heavy tent but I need to be totally protected from the Scottish weather. Can people with experience give me some recommendations. I'm happy to spend up to 400 quid on a tent.
Nortent are bringing out a lighter weight version of this tent. If you can't wait, tarptent Scarp 1 is a good shout.
Hi, if you want a really tent you will need spend money. I live in the Swiss Alps, here we don' t play with the mountains so if we want spend the night outdoor we take good tents with us, example: Exped, Hilleberg, Fjallraven,etc. Expend good money in a good tent. Cheaper twice expensive. Cheers

Different tents, different conditions. Sometimes the single pole is great, sometimes not.
Your 700/900 single pole is not enough for Snowdonia or Lake District in the Fall/Winter, let alone the North Pole. I know for personal experience with my Lanshan 1.
What's wrong with some so called modern men that they are incapable of carrying a few pounds of tent. 🙄
