    Could we please explain how the diaphragm is described as being used for support of sound when singing or playing a wind instrument when it can only function as a muscle to use for inhalation? Is it that we are furthering a term for the purposes of conceptual visualization when it is not anatomically correct?

  • @TotalSinging
    @TotalSinging 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    You talk about dispelling myths but your first statement is a long standing one - that we cannot actively control the diaphragm. We most certainly can in many ways. Then you proceed to say we need to train "correct breathing techniques". If we cannot actively engage the diaphragm there cannot be "correct" or "incorrect" breathing.
    1. the idea that just expanding the ribs activates the diaphragm is incorrect. One can breathe without chest expansion (done in Yoga) and one can expand the ribs without breathing (using the intercostal muscles). These two movements - ribcage expansion and diaphragm expansion are not connected. The diaphragm descends FIRST which pushes out the floating ribs (side expansion), only after the lungs start the expand do the ribcage intercostal muscles activate.
    2. The lungs do not actively "take in" air. As the diaphragm descends, suction pulls the lungs downward, which draws air via negative pressurization. When we release the diaphragmatic suction, the lungs release that expansion and air is exhaled.
    3. Extending the arms upward does not pull the ribcage open in any measurable sense. You would need to have resistance via weights to actively pull the ribs apart. This is sheer nonsense.
    If you don't want people using the phrase "sing from the diaphragm" you shouldn't have titled your video to perpetuate it.
    you're well intentioned Kerri, but you lack some solid anatomy and neurological knowledge of how the body works; your points are all anecdotal and not based on actual science.

      I know you're just giving your logos-driven opinions, but please stop. I've seen your comments one the last three videos I've watched for diaphragm use and basically all you're giving is opinionated thought. Her video actually helped me so stop bashing her.

    • @TotalSinging
      @TotalSinging 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Katie Klokwork um no - I NEVER give
      "opinionated thought" when it comes to vocal technique. Its 25 years of study & research - in other words - facts.
      a big problem with your generation is anyone that doesn't agree with someone is now "bashing" or "hating". Its called "disagreement" - get used to it.

  • @scorwitz
    @scorwitz 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are incorrect. The diaphragm is a muscle that can be voluntarily used. When you lower your diaphragm, your rib cage expands. It isn't the expanding rib cage that is pulling the diaphragm down.

    • @freeze111201
      @freeze111201 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kind of agree with this. :)

  • @beatlesfreakk2025
    @beatlesfreakk2025 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I thought you were supposed to voluntarily tense the intercostal muscles immediately after you've inhaled?? Most videos say you have to squeeze the muscles around your rib cage... I'm confused

  • @magicarp6802
    @magicarp6802 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Isnt breathing with the rib cage the opposite of breathing with your diapraghm? Then is singing with the diaphragm that or actually singing with all muscles(diaphragm and full rib extension)?

    Hello, good day! I would like to ask for advises about my singing. I haven't been in a vocal training lesson or any kind of these. I'm actually concerned because whenever we go to karaoke, do covers, etc., I need to change the pitch in order for me to sing it properly because I cannot get to most of the notes of all the songs in every songs. My friends don't have this kind of issue and certainly not most and also, after singing 3-4 songs, my throat hurts. Then I assumed, maybe I'm doing something wrong. Then I noticed, not recently but as long as I can remember, the thing called singing using your Diaphragm. I think this is the thing that I need to practice. I'm doing covers and I want to make more covers without hurting my throat. Any advises would be grate. Thank you. :)

    • @KerriHo
      @KerriHo  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi there Leinard! Yes, you are correct, proper breathing is definitely going to help you. When singers don't use good breath support, they tend to push more from the throat and this would account for your voice hurting after only a few songs. Your throat should feel light and free when you sing. Here's a video to help you sing more effortlessly - th-cam.com/video/caKwH-Xv754/w-d-xo.html

    Fantastic video -- but might I ask that you be clearer in something. You can't correct semantics if you don't use them yourself >.< Vocal cords are not "cords" at all, they're folds. I'm sure you know that, but your viewers may not. Understanding how your vocal folds work and that they actually sit running horizontally might be helpful. :) Cheers.

    i dont think the biology side of things is correct here our diaphragm contracting and relaxing is actually what pulls the air in and out (with help from the muscles on our ribs) so it is literally what we breathe with. The lungs are where the gaseous exchange takes place but the air going in and out is down to the diaphragm. the diaphragm is a lot lower than what you said and it doesnt flatten because the ribs expand, the ribs don even expand, the chest cavity does (you would not want your ribs to expand because they are supposed to be attached). Thee diaphragm flattens because its contracting and that happens every time we take a breath, we wouldnt be breathing otherwise because the diaphragm contracting is what pulls air in. it doesnt just happen if you breathe a certain way which is what you seem to be implying here. I dont know about the abdominal muscles but the other things i do know.

    hi kerri i hope you will see my comment , i am not a singer i just learned singing lately i wassinging last yr very good but this year i really have problems i am straining a lot and when i use the diaphragm i dont feel any support and it hurts when i exhale y tummy out when i inhale and i feel like theres a barrier in my throat singing P.S i suck now T.T

    • @KerriHo
      @KerriHo  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there Ian- I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems. I don't advocate pushing the tummy out and pulling it in as you sing- this can create too much force and cause throat problems. Expanding in the rib cage sideways (like when you do a big yawn) is a much more efficient way to breathe and is wonderful support for your voice. Then, don't push the ribs in as you sing, but allow them to stay open. I sure hope this helps you Ian! =)
