    Once again a great video. May I also offer an often missing ingredient for consistently singing in this way. Focus and Mental intention. You have to mentally gear up, or psych yourself up. You have to really want to go there, because it requires a lot of energy and confidence, and as Kerri mentioned the development of specific skills and strength.

    "...how to engage the other, bigger, muscles in your body so that you are not relying on the teeny tiny muscles in your throat." -- Support feels exactly as she describes it. I love how expressive and tangible her speech is.
    For whoever finds it helpful or just interesting, the resonance she speaks of is caused by the epiglottis partially closing off the wind pipe, compressing the air in the voice box (which is not the same as straining).
    I definitely have to work more on my head voice. I am having trouble dropping the "weight" to go higher (F#4 and up), probably because I am having difficulty identifying my head voice. I can go up to E5 doing... something, but I don't think it is a useful tone.

But you are the person who has the best words to explain how to improve my voice :-) At the same time I feel reassured that my teachers are giving me the good exercises, and you are a good complement for giving me hope and the will to improve. Thanks, Kerri! I'd like to know the title/source of your new intro music (and also of the old one--the piano riff that plays at 1:17). They're catchy. The piano riff is familiar to me, but I don't know where or how to find it.
    I should also point out to the other viewers that you have good posture. Misaligning the neck causes a squeeze in the pharynx. Thus, keeping it straight makes singing high a lot easier. :) I believe this is the gist of the "neck anchoring" taught by Estill teachers. Another important thing is the idea of subtly narrowing the vowels (with the back of the throat, not the lips) around the break, the area where we usually start applying the chesty mix. Correct vowel modifications reduce the effort needed to get through that pesky break.

    I have a question about head voice: I can do the opera singing (kinda) like you in the video, but I do it completely without chest voice and it sounds like a woman. My sisters are always all over me with my voice, cause I'm just horrible. I rarely have good times with it, so I think I can be helped. I never practice before songs. My practice is a song that does my voice good. No lip trills or nothing like that. But I want my voice to get better. Did my voice get damaged from not practicing, or my mom says 'I'm growing'.

    • @KerriHo
      @KerriHo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Eimi! Really great question. Your chest voice is the part of the range of your voice that is closest to your speaking voice. Your head voice is the higher part of your voice. Try this- place your hand on your chest and say in your normal speaking voice - "I am feeling wonderful today!" - leave your hand on your chest and say the same thing but really high, like Minnie Mouse. What do you feel? Do you feel a vibration in your chest with the first one but not in the really high voice? Chest voice resonates mostly in your chest - head voice resonates in your head. =)

    Hi Kerry. I was wondering how realistic do we have to be about how high we can sing? For example I'm a guy and I know I can't sing like Mariah Carey. So where do I put my benchmark? I also was wondering how I would make the transition from my chest voice into my head voice smoother? Sometimes I have to stop and change to head voice and if I don't sometimes my voice cracks.

      hey, basically we are in the same boat but listen... it may take real effort but your voice is capable of reaching the note. right... bear that in mind. you have to practice and have the confidence. its not just cliches but it is the truth. its kinda difficult so go in your room an reach the notes that you can do. youtube 'how to sing head voice' that will train you... after all you can already reach.

      Hi there Joy. It's really important to use care and never force or push your voice. Learning to sing high notes requires good breath support and using resonance (which helps take pressure off of the vocal cords). You also don't want to push your chest voice higher than it wants to go. Instead, allow your voice to go over into head voice, but work on techniques to strengthen your head voice - th-cam.com/video/L-zv1dpom94/w-d-xo.html and also to bridge your vocal break - th-cam.com/video/uCD4E-chJ_U/w-d-xo.html. It's also important to warm up your voice before you sing- th-cam.com/video/0NzEHSHvuRE/w-d-xo.html. Thank you for your question Joy! =)

    Can you help? I'm a countertenor but my head register only goes comfortably to around C6. I have sung up to G6 before but I can't do it regularly and it doesn't sound good when I do. I'd like to sing Phantom of the Opera but I can't reach that high E with comfort.

      +Desiree Sandoval - Come back on volume, but make sure you have prepared your throat and have good breath support. Visualize that you are floating in clouds as you sing, and keep your voice free and easy. Try these tips to sing light and clear!
