I only vaguely understood open gate before watching this video and now it's crystal clear and more useful than I first thought, so thank you for the great explanation with examples! I'm still learning about anamorphic lenses and the first thing I learnt is that I probably can't afford it :D
I need some anamorphic in my life! I’ve just backed the Moment anamorphic adapter on Kickstarter, seems like good bang for buck as you can use it on many lenses. Still pricy tho!
This is such a good hack, my little mind is properly blown! There is a whole saved list in my Amazon profile that I can now confidently just delete, a metric tonne of equipment that won't end up in land-fill. Thanks for this! Now I have to start practicing...
So far, the main thing I've done with open gate is to set up a stationary camera with a wide lens at a live event, and then add movement in post to simulate a 2nd shooter.
Thanks for the very explanatory video. You highlighted three advantages to open gate. I suggest there is a forth: Open gate leaves wiggle room not just for re-reframing, but for shake removal in post. IMHO, the decisions of most camera companies to limit video saves to EXACTLY 1920,x1080 or EXACTLY 3840 x 2160 pixel resolutions makes no sense. With exact in-camera crops to delivery resolution, ANY shake removal done in post involves a crop followed by an upres. ANY reframing in post involves a crop followed by an upres. In either case, image quality inevitably suffers. With open gate, or even a mathematically simple down-res/resampling to something beyond delivery resolutions, more of the resolution of one or both of the sensor dimensions can make it to post. Consequentially, a degree of "wiggle room" is available is available during editing.
Kudo's to the hybrid manufacturers who are providing open gate. I suspect it, or something approaching open gate, will be eventually be a ubiquitous option on ALL higher end hybrid cameras.
I watched a 20mins video on open gate /gh6 just before yours (I have a GH5ii). I have to say: yours makes it very easy for someone with no clue about what open gate is to make sense of it! Thanks!
This was very clear and helpful -- thank you! Now here's a situation: I'm shooting a GH5m2 in open gate, 3328 X 2496, at 60fps. I can't seem to find a field monitor that supports it. When I take it down to 30fps my monitor works, but 60 is my preference. But I got it sorted out, hopefully, by using a phone or an iPad mini as a monitor. Yay.
Just found your channel, with a lens review. Was not really looking for excuses to spend even more money so very pleased to find videos about how to get more out of what I already own! Am now going to binge watch everything :)
I really like the iphotography 1-shot take you shared with us here. I am hoping to use open gate with my BGH1 as I want to capture a little more of an image.
Thank you for another informative video about my beloved GH5! Just tried this with my Meike 3.5 Circular Fisheye, and wow! Now I can actually record video of the full circle! No more crop, woohoo!
Hi Craig! Is it possible to use an external monitor when recording in open gate mode? Are there guide lines available on the external monitor to frame 16:9 or 9:16?
One thing I'll add is its great for rolls/rotations (in post or with gimbals) as you have more of an image "square" to play with. Open Gate is such a versatile option to have on the GH6, I'm really getting use out of it.
thanks for this! Would you recommend editing a video with the timeline clips as 3:2 and then changing the sequence settings to your desired resolution when you're done OR Setting the sequence settings to your desired resolution when creating the project from the start?
Hi Afotey. Is it possible to use an external monitor when recording in open gate mode? Are there guide lines available on the external monitor to frame 16:9 or 9:16?
@@locoqueno yes, it's totally possible to monitor while shooting open gate. I do it literally every time I turn my camera on and shoot with my anamorphic lenses. And the GH5 Mark II does have guide lines for all those aspect ratios, as does the GH5/GH6.
I used to have a Kind of open gate function when making time lapses - I Pan and tilt slowly to make it more interesting . And I feel so restricted when this feature is not available with my older Panasonics. So I decided to make all videos only in HD Quality so I can add movements when filming in 4k.
Great video and really nice shots. I really like shooting open gate on the GH6, I do wish Panasonic would allow you to put multiple frame markers on the screen though, that would be really handy, just as a quick shortcut reference for framing. Just for something like having 9:16, 16:9, and even 1:1. I know it would be a mess but I would find that really useful.
Hi. The gimbal clip in open gate. Did you use Auto focus? Wondering if the Panny could have kept up with the dynamic shots. I have a GH5 and would love to do something like that. .. thanks for your response. I know it's already been a year now.
It would be good if a firmware update for the G9 included this feature. I occasionally film Rock Choirs and edit the 16:9 footage in an anamorphic format and also pan and zoom the 4K footage.
As an amateur I find that that extra space really useful for smooth top-down (or opposite) views. Although image stabilisation helps a lot it is not to maintain consistant panning speed. You can also sort of set a movement of viewport in editing software in a bezier curve manner and achieve a satysfiing ease-out with a good framing and without any fiddling with framerate.
Thank you so much for the video! I am looking into buying a GH6 mainly beacuse I want to take advantage of open gate but I at this point quality anamorphics are out of my budget so I am looking into Meike lenses, can you still get a 4:3 image using Meike? Is there a crop? Thank you so much, and keep on the great content!
Hi nice video.. I have some doubts though. Recently I wa steering the s5M2. I shot in 6k open gate. But I am not sure how to edit it. I use fcpx. I am not sure what should be the project timeline resolution and all that. If you can make a video on that, especially the editing part .. that will be a huge help. 🙏
If you want to make the most of the ability to punch in and reframe then the video timeline should stay as normal, in a 16:9 ratio 😊 I edit in 4k 16:9 which is 3840 × 2160
IMHO, being able to shoot in 4:3 open gate gives us another reason for the MFT being a great format. 👍Although you can also do this with full frame (A la S1H, which is an even more amazing camera), it allows a MFT camera to be capable of up to 6K resolution, which is simply amazing ! I loved the running swish-pan sequence you did for that industrial video you showed ! This was quality work.👀👌
Great video as always. We just got the GH6 and open gate footage just does not play well on our PC with Resolve Pro. What are you using to edit successfully (software and hardware)? Are you transcoding at all before editing, or direct import? Thank you so much

Do people not use the whole image frame and post that on youtube, rumble etc..? I get Move screens are 16x9 but does everything have to look that way? Seems like a was of a sensor. Also what if you want to get everything in from top and bottom? Do you have to squeeze in the image and make it look funny?
Hey there thanks for this video it is really insightful, appreciate it! I have a question as a GH5m2 owner. If I shoot open gate in 4k and crop in post am I losing quality as opposed to just shooting in 4k with the regular 16:9 aspect ratio? Does Panasonic do any enhancing when cropping in 16:9 that is missed when going open gate? Or am I just doing in post what the GH5m2 does for me when selecting a 16:9 aspect ratio. Thanks!
So, not sure on the gh5m2, but on the gh6, the open gate settings are 4.4k at 60p and 5.something k at 24p so you don’t lose any resolution 😊 check the resolution and see but I assume it just makes the longer edge higher resolution to fit the full sensor and you won’t lose anything
I recently got a GH5M2, since my computer can't easily move the 422 footage I still haven't decided what video settings in terms of video quality I should use... except "FHD 24p 420/8-L + VFR" for 120fps... Would you do a video explaining the settings for this OpenGate thing? Thanks!!
I used Open Gate for the first time this week with my anamorphic lens which was sitting on a shelf unloved for a year. I decided to go out and film the solstice sunset. Not exactly a riveting, on the edge of your seat subject matter, but I wanted to have a play. The world of pain came when editing. Do you know how hard it is to learn/research how to de-squeeze footage? Easy it is not. Even the "Anamorphic on a budget" channel made gleaning the information difficult. But I got there. 😀

@@mica.motion ProRes is really easy on the Mac operating system. Have you tried using Proxy files? That helps a lot to speed things up, but takes up a bit more storage space
Not everything, but sometimes it’s really handy. It is only 4:2:0 so some of the other choices in the camera are higher quality in trickier lighting situations.
Abandoning 4:3 was the worst thing ever. I love 4:3. Whenever I see a 16:9 monitor or movie or picture or whatever, it looks just like a tank rolled over it and made it too flat. It's like looking out of a window that has blinds and you peek between those. One of my monitors on my PC is still 4:3 - reading and writing texts is so much better, you have to scroll much less. Ah, err...yes, to the topic: Idk, but I just shoot everything with 4K. Because nobody needs 4K anywhere, nobody has such good eyes and the TH-cam/Facebook/Netflix/whatever-compression kills any advantage anyway. So there is always a great amount of headroom when downsizing the video to 1080p. But maybe this is a pure online-creator's point of view 🙂
I totally get that! I think for my videos, as a lot of them either have photos in, or are comparing different types of footage, there is a benefit for uploading in 4k for that extra pixel-peeping goodness, but yeah, the average video you can hardly tell.
I can't believe I've been using my GH5 for so long and had no idea this was a thing! I just thought that setting was for anamorphic lens shooting. This is a gamechanger. Are the downsizes just that the files are a bit bigger? I guess less frame rate options too.
Riddle me this, will Sony ever release a firmware update for the A7S3 that allows for open gate. If they claim there is a hardware limitation... They're lying. So very annoying
Oh I just thought buying a GH5 for this purpose. Is it possible to use an external monitor when recording in open gate mode? Are there guide lines available on the external monitor to frame 16:9 or 9:16?

It can be done on the S5ii, you have a 3:2 open gate so a slightly different ratio but it works great still
@@MicroFourNerds Gotcha. Thanks. I get mine tomorrow at Yodobashi Camera UMEDA. The greatest electronics shop in the world.
A totally under estimated channel !
Thank you very much 🙏
How hard is it to edit 6K open gate footage?
Do you shoot everything in open gate?
Not everything, but sometimes it’s really handy. It is only 4:2:0 so some of the other choices in the camera are higher quality in trickier lighting situations.
Sadge I don't have OPen Gate on my EOS R
Strange that Panasonic haven't created a multi social media markers grid
I would love it if they did
Abandoning 4:3 was the worst thing ever.
Ah, err...yes, to the topic:
Idk, but I just shoot everything with 4K.
Are you me? Haha, pretty much exactly how I feel about it all.
I can't believe I've been using my GH5 for so long and had no idea this was a thing! I just thought that setting was for anamorphic lens shooting. This is a gamechanger.
Are the downsizes just that the files are a bit bigger? I guess less frame rate options too.
Yes no downsides at all just larger files and different codec/frame rate options etc. it’s really handy!
Great! .lovely contents..congratulations I have gh4 gh5 gh5s bgh1 and gh6 and I've got a lot of fun here in Rapanui Happiness and blessings
yeah great way
People may not know, arri alexa cinema camer also shoots 4.3 if i remember right.
Open gates? Wich camera are you talking about?
In mft, the Lumix GH5, GH6, and possibly some of the cameras that have the 4k/6k photo modes 😊
If you film at open gate in 5.7k and export as 4k you have room to keyframe left and right, and up and down.
Well put!
Excellent point thank you 😁
@@MicroFourNerds You are welcome!
@@EmberSkyMedia Thank you!
I never realized how many features I had but never used
Riddle me this, will Sony ever release a firmware update for the A7S3 that allows for open gate. If they claim there is a hardware limitation... They're lying. So very annoying
on the GH5 Open Gate is trash, very poor codec. Sure it's 10 bit, but the bitrate is ridiculous and it's 4:2:0.
Oh I just thought buying a GH5 for this purpose.
Is it possible to use an external monitor when recording in open gate mode?
Are there guide lines available on the external monitor to frame 16:9 or 9:16?
