Excellent tests! Now, for one more test, after Dwight takes off and flies away, pick up the landing mat and put the bottle cap there, then put the mat a couple of feet away and see which spot Dwight lands on.
Couple of comments on precision landing. It is definitely using the sensor camera to scan the terrain. While you're hovering at or above 24 feet, you can see that the colour camera is looking horizontally. It also returns to horizontal about six feet above the ground on landing. With that in mind, the scan view is in B&W, not colour. That's why Dwight doesn't care what colour the pad became while he was out flying. Since the scan is done at such a height, the picture is quite wide. In the case of the bottle cap, the scan included the big painted line and many other features - twigs, rocks, etc. The computer has a lot to choose from to get the landing right. Now you have to do a video where the only thing you change is whether you do the auto takeoff or start the props and raise the drone yourself. Lots of fun. Thanks for taking us along. Is 40:31
Heck yea man! That explanation makes total sense to me. I’m pretty certain the little bit of info about it in the manual says the same thing but I like your explanation way better. I’m not sure why I didn’t at least try a manual take off once during that whole video. lol. I’m definitely adding your suggestion to the future test list and really appreciate your info. Sorry for my delayed reply, brother. One of those weeks. lol. God bless!
lol orange has always been one of my favorites and of course everyone knows why. Haha. I think the blue mat is cool though so I’m torn. Thanks for watching as always, Shaun. Every time i see your blue guy emoji up there I think of Cookie Monster and want a cookie. What’s up with that?
Hahaha. Thanks for watching as always, brother. I’m still pretty confused on what changed here. lol. Sorry for my delayed reply man. It’s been one of those weeks again. I’ll get caught up eventually. Hahaha. Yea right!
Pretty conclusive that auto take off seems to work pretty well. I’m sure we discussed this some time ago 😁 I think it’s a mixture of scanning the terrain and the use of gps locking on take off. Great video Kevin 👍
lol oh I’m sure we did. What haven’t we discussed about these drones? Hahaha. I agree it’s definitely a combination of all of the above. I’m still really surprised it did so well on the precision part. Dwight did a complete 180 from last flight.
Thanks again, Doug! Dwight did good this time which is really weird considering how far off he’s been for the past several weeks. It’s a head scratcher.
Great success with the precision landing. My thoughts are that it uses GPS to land perfect specially when it hovers steady in one spot where it takes off from. But the vision sensors are cameras too so it could be taking pictures of the landing area as well. Awesome test anyway. God bless.
these drone cameras are all in black and white, it doesn't see color, in short for the drone it doesn't matter the color of the take-off location, but the GPS coordinates
lol it’s hard for me to say, man. I’m still convinced it takes a picture of the terrain but it has to use the GPS and GNSS stuff to get itself close. It’s probably a combination of everything but I’m in no way qualified to make that determination. lol.
Hahaha. I showed Kristi the bottle cap the other day and she was awe for sure. lol. Dwight does have some magical powers man. That’s the only explanation!
lol awesome! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. I was really pleased with the results for sure but more surprised of how well the drone did a complete 180 since the last flight. Thanks again for watching and sorry for my late response. It’s been one of those weeks. lol. God bless!
Hey cool looks like the trick might be the auto take off. For the bottle cap trick I was hoping you would have kept the landing pad out just move it away from the bottle cap and see if Dwight would land on the bottle cap or on the landing pad.
lol yea the auto take off seems to have helps a lot but I’m still trying to comprehend how much of a 180 Dwight did from last test. Really strange. I just hope it continues. Oh, and your idea is going in the future test list for sure. Awesome idea!!! Again!!! lol
Alright brother, antennas up, battery label up, great start haha! Well Dwight absolutely nailed it today, he wasn’t messing about, no way he was being tricked ! Great tests as always mate and I agree with you that’s the way to take off and get the Rth locked in! Faultless! Well done Kev , see you on the next one, have a great week! 👍👌🙂
lol we were on top of things here I reckon. I had to be on top of my game to fool Dwight but it still didn’t work. I’m really still confused why he did so well this time. He did a complete 180 from the last flights. I guess there’s something to that method for sure, eh?
Yea I’d definately say it was that process brother , he was definitely on his game doing it that way and didn’t miss a beat, those were precision landings for sure , couldn’t of got any better ! Another great video as always Kev , have a great week brother 👌👍
lol I bet Kristi would disagree with your first sentence. Hahaha. Dwight surprised me on this one. It’s weird how he totally reversed his precision landing on these flights. Totally unexpected
Hey, I just watched your video and that’s exactly what some people were saying on my test. Use the auto take off and then go up to the 24 feet. Great video. I can’t wait to test mine. I didn’t have time today. Probably will have time tomorrow after work.
Nice to watch another of your videos. Thanks for sharing. Ps. For a guy that doesn’t like orange you might consider buying a blue t-shirt 😂😂 Pps. Nice to hear you use the metric system even though it was just once 👍
Ok, so maybe I can try this myself but you do such a great job :-) Similar to the bottle cap test. Exactly the same test BUT instead of hiding the landing pad in the truck, just move it about 4-5 feet to the side of the bottle cap. Now, Dwight will have to "decide" is GPS where the bottle cap is located the "correct" spot OR is the landing pad (4-5 feet away) but part of the picture it takes the correct spot to land? Curious minds want to know. Hope that makes sense.
lol thanks, Randy! Sorry for my late reply buddy. It’s been one of those weeks. You know. BUT in a bout 6 weeks I won’t have anymore of those weeks. lol
Hey Kevin! I think Dwight was hot and thirsty and figured if he landed on the bottle cap then he just might just get a cold refreshing beer ! 😂 More good stuff you've created ! Hope all is well. 👍
Hahahaha. Yea Dwight seems to be a rebel nowadays and does what he wants normally so I guess he was looking for a reward. lol. Thanks for watching again and for the awesome comment. You Dman! lol. Sorry yea I know. Lame. Haha
As always a great video from you Kevin. I've been thinking for a few days now about the maximum achievable accuracy of GPS devices and previously thought it should be somewhere between 15 and 30 feet. Today I read that multi-band GNSS receivers can achieve an accuracy of a few inches. What do you think of the following idea to find out whether the accuracy of the precision landing is actually only achieved by the multi-band GNSS receiver or whether the lower cameras actually memorize the terrain and the Mini 4 Pro uses the memorized image for landing? Do the test at night and switch the auxiliary light from automatic to off.
Dude that’s a great test idea. That would definitely tell if it relies on a picture or Gps stuff, eh? I’m gonna add this to the list of things to test but there’s one minor problem. I’d either have to stay up past my bedtime or wake up before wakie wakie time. Hahaha.
Awesome!!! Thank you so much for watching and commenting, buddy. We really appreciate your support and always love to see when someone enjoys the videos. I can totally add this to the list of things to test. We have a good bit of trains in the area around here so the trick will be to find a spot and wait for one to pass. lol. Thanks again for watching. God bless! Kevin
@S-teamwork definitely. It’s on my list, brother. Can’t promise it’ll be next week but I’m gonna give it a shot. This is what I really enjoy about our channel. Viewer suggestions keep the fun in this stuff. Yea!
Nice precision landing test. I noticed your MP4's focus was way off in one of your flights (3rd? - around 9:50 ). It seems to have focused on something close then never adjusted in flight until it was ready to land. Mine does that every now and then too. If I notice it before I capture blurry video, I can tap the screen and the drone will refocus.
Awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting, Tom I noticed the same thing but not until I was editing the video. lol it’s almost like it was hung up in a manual focus for some reason. That’s weird cause I only use auto fixes. I have no clue what I’m doing with that stuff. Hahaha
ok so i heard it takes a picture too..... when you did this, that big white line was right in front of you for reference, i think you should do this again in a grassy field and just move the pad 1 ft and see if the drone shoots for the center of the pad or if it shoots for its original spot
Ahhhhh. Yea I never even noticed that big white line. Dwight had to though. Hahaha. I really like the idea of moving to a grassy field for this. It would possibly take all those other landmarks out of the equation, eh? I’m adding this to the list of future tests for sure. Thanks, brother! God bless.
lol it came from Amazon. It’s actually part of a bike handle bar mount for the RC2 but I haven’t used it that way yet. For now it makes a heck of a kick stand. Haha.
It's all to do with GPS and compus coordination that's why you have to let it hover for awhile before you fly away the camera is only to let the flyer see where the drone is going to land.
makes total sense to me.. especially after doing this test.. So, did we really learn anything in this video? NOPE!!! hahaha I'm glad we're just here for entertainment and not the informational purposes. People would be in a steady state of confusion... lol Thanks so much for watching and for the info, brother.. God bless!
How do you do the videos with the GoPro and drone video what editing software do you use I would love to do a video like that and use my voice thanks I love your video?
Awesome comment and I’m sorry it took so like for me to reply. It’s been one of “those” weeks. lol. We use Wondershare Filmora to edit the videos and record most of the non drone footage with a GoPro hero 9. It’s a good bit of work but it’s a fun hobby for sure. Keep us in the loop of your progress and definitely ask us if you have some questions. God bless!
Being a retired programmer, if I programmed for DJI, I would make the drone recognise the 'H'-pad if there is one reasonably close to home point, and land spot on it. Maybe they did just that?
Holy crap that would be a really cool thing to do. I’m nothing even close to a programmer so I would have no idea what that would take to do but o bet DJi could figure it out, eh? I’m not sure how Dwight did what he did on this video considering how off he’s been recently. I’m happy about it though. lol
@@WeretheRoberts Well, with what they already have, it could not take much effort to add. Maybe they already did? Idea for next test: Start without H-pad, when drone is away put the pad about 1 yard away from exact start point, let drone go back to home and see what happens
@@pjotrekselol maybe they have. I’m usually out of the loop so nobody will inform me hahaha. I love your idea on the landing pad so it’s going on the list of future tests for sure. Thanks, brother!
Hi Kevin, I have just purchased my Mini 4 Pro unlike you I live in South Australia so it is winter here so it is cold. Anyway I can I now throw away my landing pad and just use a bottle cap, should I have 2 of them I could paint 1 blue and 1 orange, as my mini 4 is a baby only done 1 very small flight I should be able to confuse it unlike Dwight who is a very experienced drone and can't be easily fooled. Love your videos.😄
Hahahaha. That’s hilarious, man! Congrats on the drone by the way. Once it warms up a bit you’re gonna have a blast. I’m sure you’ll be out there even in the cold though. Who can resist flying a new drone??? Hahaha. I do like your landing pad replacement idea with the bottle caps. I may just have to do the same. I could use a Pepsi cap and an orange Crush cap. lol. Thanks for watching and commenting! God bless!
Dang man that’s a great idea. There have been a few of you guys mention this so it’s definitely going on the to do list. Awesome! Thanks for the suggestion, buddy. God bless!
lol it’s not an issue. I look out the window. I always fly forward so I can see the drone out of the windshield or driver side window. It works out pretty good. Thanks for asking and for watching. God bless!
Dwight is smarter than skull trickery lol, I would guess Dwight takes a launch point image perhaps similar to a finger print with multiple markers in grey scale, so if there are still a sufficient quantity of marks at the landing point Dwight should still be able to perform like a trooper as was the case with the Birkenhead cap... outstanding test with a color bust on top
Hahaha. Yea he’s definitely got some things up his sleeve. Weird part is I’ve never see him wearing a shirt. I think you’re totally right about the markers. Do you think it may all work in conjunction with the gps info, too? It would have to right?
I agree with most of the folks re the GPS plays a huge part but when Dwight was trying to land on the back of the truck cover with the high wind ruffling the bed cover Dwight may have had trouble figuring out where ground zero was causing the unsuitable landing msg and throwing off the precision landing maybe! Hard to test that one
Hey there! Sorry for my delayed reply, buddy. It’s been a pretty busy week and all that stuff. lol. I don’t have the Air 3, but precision landing is definitely one of its features. With the way Dwight handled this weeks video, I bet he could beat an Air 3 though. Hahaha
Hahaha. My brother in law gave me the hat last time we visited in May. We are probably gonna be moving up there after I retire (not immediately) but eventually. Kristi’s whole family is up there near Des Moines lol
@@WeretheRoberts Awesome!! 👏🏼 Right on! We would be happy to have you here in Iowa!! I’m in Carroll, NW of Des Moines. Where hwy 71 and hwy 30 intersect! Hence the name! 😉💯
@@seventyone30lol that’s funny. I told wife where you were and she said, oh yea that’s Nw of Des Moines. lol. So, do you have a camper spot for us? lol
lol it’s actually part of a bicycle handle bar mounting bracket. That part attaches permanently to the controller with a couple screws and really acts like a great kick stand. Haha. I still haven’t used it for what it was meant for yet but I plan to soon. I got it from Amazon. Here’s the link if you wanna check it out. a.co/d/hFzAQAD
Are you talking about your Mini 4 or Dwight? I was pretty amazed how accurate he was on this test. The trickery didn’t screw with him at all! lol. Thanks for watching, Jack!
Hi kevin, this was another great video. It seems that your controller is suffering from stick drift. I don't think it's your gimball going to the left, which you see in the beginning of the video. You can test this with the option to calibrate the controller. I'm very curious. I accidentally posted this comment to Shaun the drone. Your absent-mindedness is probably contagious via the internet. 😂😂🤣🤣
Oh wow that’s a really good possibility. I’ve been having this issue for a while (along with all the other issues lol) and haven’t even thought of what it could be. I may need to try this on a new video, eh? Thanks so much for the advice. I’ll definitely look into it and see if it helps. I’ll know right away because it happens every time I lift off now. It’ll correct itself pretty quick but it may also affect the precision landing. Maybe maybe. lol
Hey Kevin, now you’ve gone and done it… Not only are you testing Dwight with all the latest Firmwares, you’ve escalated to tricking him…😂 I had to test my Mini 4 Pro too “Maverick”, but I didn’t try to trick him.🤣 DJI Mini 4Pro RTH & Precision Landing Fail or Pass ? th-cam.com/video/1UCyKsiXiQ8/w-d-xo.html Thanks for another great video brother… Keep on doing what do.
lol these new firmware updates are becoming questionable again. lol. I’m not sure why but this time it seems like it may have helped! Very suspicious. lol
Its time to pit a stop to this non sense, i am an electronics and communications engineering, it all depends on the GPS satellite is locked in, doesn't matter what color, its the the the coordinates where its locked in. You're welcome
these drone cameras are all in black and white, it doesn't see color, in short for the drone it doesn't matter the color of the take-off location, but the GPS coordinates
OK, Mr. Expert, then you can certainly answer this question: If the accuracy of the best GPS devices is between 15 and 30 feet, how was it possible to land within a few inches four times in a row?
Definitely a possibility. I’m definitely not an expert and have no real scientifically supported explanations here but my thought is it takes a “picture” of the terrain and uses the gps and GNSS to get it back to the general location then tries to match the terrain from take off to dial the landing spot in. However it works for sure, DJi knows and ain’t sharing. Hahaha.
Excellent tests! Now, for one more test, after Dwight takes off and flies away, pick up the landing mat and put the bottle cap there, then put the mat a couple of feet away and see which spot Dwight lands on.
Yup, great suggestion. That will be really interesting. Don't let Dwight read this @WeretheRoberts.
lol see, Gary? I always miss something. That’s a fantastic idea so consider it done. Haha. And IamHerk, I’ll keep it a total secret. lol.
Thanks for watching and commenting! God bless!
Move the mat 1 fot to the side - see if it lands on the mat or not
Dang man that’s a great idea. There have been a few of you guys mention this so it’s definitely going on the to do list. Awesome! Thanks for the suggestion, buddy. God bless!
How do you maintain VLOS sitting in your truck? Or is that not an issue?
lol it’s not an issue.
@@rickkenyon8486wonder if a leaf blower could help out in this situation. Hmmmm. Lol
Worth a try lol
I don't have a landing pad for my original mini and I use auto takeoff and it landed at the same spot.
lol I wonder if the landing pad is used more to confuse us than the drones? Hahaha.
Does the Air 3 have the precision landing?
Hey there! Sorry for my delayed reply, buddy. It’s been a pretty busy week and all that stuff. lol. I don’t have the Air 3, but precision landing is definitely one of its features. With the way Dwight handled this weeks video, I bet he could beat an Air 3 though. Hahaha
Iowa Hawkeyes!! 🫶🏼🤘🏼
Hahaha. My brother in law gave me the hat last time we visited in May. We are probably gonna be moving up there after I retire (not immediately) but eventually. Kristi’s whole family is up there near Des Moines lol
@@WeretheRoberts
Awesome!! 👏🏼 Right on! We would be happy to have you here in Iowa!! I’m in Carroll, NW of Des Moines. Where hwy 71 and hwy 30 intersect! Hence the name! 😉💯
@@seventyone30lol that’s funny. I told wife where you were and she said, oh yea that’s Nw of Des Moines. lol. So, do you have a camper spot for us? lol
@@WeretheRoberts I wish, lol.
But we live in town, haha. 🤦🏼♂️
What kind of mount do you have on the controller? Never seen that before.
lol it’s actually part of a bicycle handle bar mounting bracket. That part attaches permanently to the controller with a couple screws and really acts like a great kick stand. Haha. I still haven’t used it for what it was meant for yet but I plan to soon. I got it from Amazon. Here’s the link if you wanna check it out.

Dwight is a clever boy lol or maybe he likes a beer?.....
Hahaha. He’s pretty much a rebel and does what he wants apparently so I’d say he likes beer. Lol
@WereTheRoberts, your TH-cam account description is WAY OUT OF DATE. 😅
lol yea we should probably update that stuff. I forget how to do it though. Hahaha
In all of the landings, the target was right in the center of my phone's screen.
Are you talking about your Mini 4 or Dwight? I was pretty amazed how accurate he was on this test. The trickery didn’t screw with him at all! lol. Thanks for watching, Jack!
Dear Florida state troopers, please disregard the audio 0:56 wherein Mr. Kevin factually stated he was doing 63 in a 55 zone. 😅
Hahahaha. And Florida!!!!
That should be bottle cap LOL
Hahaha. I knew what you meant.
👍👍👍😎☕
Awesome! Love the coffee! Haha. God bless. 😁
Maybe maybe. lol
Hey Kevin, now you’ve gone and done it… Not only are you testing Dwight with all the latest Firmwares, you’ve escalated to tricking him…😂
I had to test my Mini 4 Pro too “Maverick”, but I didn’t try to trick him.🤣

Thanks for another great video brother…
Keep on doing what do.
lol these new firmware updates are becoming questionable again.
So, I guess you've not read the user manual?
these drone cameras are all in black and white, it doesn't see color, in short for the drone it doesn't matter the color of the take-off location, but the GPS coordinates
OK, Mr. Expert, then you can certainly answer this question: If the accuracy of the best GPS devices is between 15 and 30 feet, how was it possible to land within a few inches four times in a row?
@@Cayldan
drones do not only use GPS system for Mini 4 pro
Global Navigation Satellite System
GPS + Galileo + BeiDou
Electronics and communication engineers that confuses GPS with cameras.....
but... you shudda moved the pad over but close to where it took off.. thats the test of what its looking for when landing
lol you’re absolutely right? I’m adding your suggestion to the list future tests for sure. Thanks, buddy! Hope you enjoyed the video. God bless.
It uses gps
Definitely a possibility. I’m definitely not an expert and have no real scientifically supported explanations here but my thought is it takes a “picture” of the terrain and uses the gps and GNSS to get it back to the general location then tries to match the terrain from take off to dial the landing spot in. However it works for sure, DJi knows and ain’t sharing. Hahaha.
