I found Mbevi's insights though-provoking as I found myself in her examples. Seeing only the positive side of people on social media makes us think that there is something wrong with us and the constant flow of these thoughts can indeed drive to mental issues especially in teenagers. Social media can always control what we see if we let it be that way. The worst part is that it is hard to control what to do in social media when it has already found your interests and provides you with the content that can take your attention for hours. I would hardly find any videos with such content on other platforms, but when I do, I try to convince the algorithm to suggest me more content like that. I think it is a small but a significant step towards trying to use social media in a better way. Although I disagree that building a strong value system will help us in this challenge. Most of the time, teenagers find their values in other's content and become addicted to watching others living with their values rather than working towards it. What about the collaborative creativity, I find it hard to determine people's intentions through social media. Only seeing them speaking positively doesn't convince me that they have positive intentions. It is not easy to see the backscreen of these people. Maybe taking advice or hearing someone's opinion on a certain topic is a good reason to follow people who try to make changes but it is not the best idea to collaborate with people who's true intentions will never be seen. Overall, this speech can be helpful for seeing the problem which is a big step towards solving it.

@@devonmitchell4651 there is a broad definition of mental illnesses, some are clinically and others could very well be self/SOCIAL MEDIA induced, take your pick on which she was referring to and do YOUR research.
I think now our days social media is one of the most distracting things in our life because social media is not really good for our health and I think she is saying the truth we shouldn't spend too much time on social media we should spend more time on ourselves and stop comparing with each other on social media because it doesn't matter if you look good or not
I strongly agree with you. I feel like history repeated itself that speech she delivered was not authentically hers, even some of the personal expressions were exactly similar to Bailey
Katanu is a student at Brookhouse School doing BTEC with a passion for marketing who spoke at a Ted talk in an effort to bring awareness to the “positive and negative impacts” of social media. This talk is balanced in a very general sense. Katanu talks about the Negative affects of social media: Insecurity, Social Currency, and Fear of Missing Out. She also proposes an action plan with three distinct steps: Build a strong value system, Collaborate creativity, Be yourself. While she seems to have all of the proper information in place she only really touches on these problems without including too much detail. She deserves credit for participating in her own action plan by spreading awareness about the issues affecting so many teens in our generation. The truth of these issues is shown when she lets us know that 60% of teenagers spend about 2 hours a day on their phones and says whether we like it or not this is bound to have a significant impact on our lives. Katanu is actively promoting the dignity of the human person with her action plan. She pulls relevant experience from her own life and things her mom used to tell her that made her feel better about herself, more dignified. This is important because in order to feel dignified and to trust in good things that should make us feel dignified sometimes we want proof. In this case it was a shirt her mom gave her that said “No one is you and that is your power”. I believe this talk was skillfully developed in the way that it was aimed towards the younger portion of our generation. While that may not be helpful for the older side, it may be useful for parents try and utilize this information. However, the young people are the people who will be hit the hardest by this social media craze, so it is indeed skillful. I think as a younger person, Katanu is extremely inspiring. We may not always feel confident enough to stand up for ourselves and defend our own dignity, especially with all of the need for approval stemming from social media. But she is an example of a strong woman who has found it in herself to overlook whatever she may hear in the media and she wants to spread awareness so that others can do the same.
Is it just me or does anyone else think some things she said were very similar to another Ted Talk on this topic? I can´t remember the last name, but I remember that the name of the woman who did this other Ted Talk was Bailey. I don't know, it reminded me of it.
There are thousand reasons to not to like social media. But, still I put up with becase I can stay connected with them. However, it is true that social media could be the source of your anxiety and depression.
