Here it is guys the best ever redfin lure for the lower reaches of the Werribee river. E.G. Below Melton Weir all the way to the Multby bypass viaduct in Werribee. No need to buy expensive lures as you can lose heaps in this snag filled river. Big redfin do not hunt in the middle of this river, never ever ever. Big redfin hide under banks and snags right at the waters edge, that's right the first foot or so right along the edge, so sideways casting only for the big boys and a closed faced reel is a must in these situations. Casting into the banks of deeper and wider pools at the end of small flowing streams is there favorite hiding spots also reeds and weed cover. Sure cast into the middle for the little guys for a bit of fun with the kids. As we are only casting a minimum distance along the banks we only ever used small red feathers from a feather duster tied with a small weight attached to a set of trebles, our most deadliest ever fantastic home made lure.
Yeah, its bad when your like me and you like collecting and testing so many lures. Gets expensive really quickly. Especially with many of the lures being $20 and over these days
Great video again Alan. Wish we had those video cameras in my day Alan so I could personally show you our great catches back in the day in the Werribee river. It was a lot more fun for us guys back then experimenting and succeeding with some of our home made lures. We were making home made tackle back recovery weights long before they were introduced to tackle shops also, they didn't work well when stuck up high in trees though lol.
Thank you !! Yeah would have been epic to see the big reddies caught there back in the day. Even more interesting would have been seeing those home made lures. Well before its time.
Great video Alan. I might go shopping. Idea for you could do a tutorial on how use different lures. I remember when I was a kid I had no idea how to use lures.
Thanks Nicky, yeah im working on some content currently for how to do this. The next vid will over what rods to use for what lures and how to work them. Some vids after that will go into more detail so stay tuned for those.
Zman Slim Swim in Bad Shad rigged with a jig spinner. Strike Tiger 1 inch nymph or 1.5 inch grub in Whitebait Pearl Tassie Devil Bladed Spinner Halco/RMG Crazy Deep diving lure for trolling
Yeah it sure is, every brand has pretty much the same variation of lures these days. I remember when i first really got into lure fishing how overwhelming it was to walk into a shop with thousands of different options. Hopefully vids like this make it easier for anglers to narrow that down and make choices a bit easier.
Yeah it sucks when you lose a paco spoon or wasaby spoon. $20 bucks down the drain just like that. However i have caught some of my best redfin and trout with those spoons.
Redfin are a beautiful fish to catch and eat, The best way to dispatch them is there is a bloodline that runs near the gill plate under their throat area. When you break that they pass quickly and bleed out which also makes them better to eat. I never show dispatching fish in my vids as many kids and families watch the show but I hope that helps
Planning a trip from the Hunter Valley NSW to Victoria to find my bucket list big redfin. Can you recommend 4 lakes/dams (reasonable travel distance from each other) where you would target them. Have a boat or landbased.
Thanks Alan, I bought the 12g Wasabi just a week ago and first catch was a stocked trout with the original giant treble...?! I've been really getting in to the Strike Tiger gear in the local stockies in Ballarat and love it, today though I got a small redfin on the 2.5" T-tail homebrew and for a little fella he damn near swallowed it all. Looking forward to more Reddies as the weather warms up.
That's awesome to hear, well done on the catches and experimenting with some new lures. Yeah the redfin fishing will only get better over the coming months as that water temperature gets up, so exciting times ahead.
heaps of good options but does depend on a few things. Are you planning to fish with bait or lures, and what your budget is. I just bought a stradic SW 5000 and its perfect for fishing in the surf you can see that here th-cam.com/video/EgJWul0aBk4/w-d-xo.html very light, great handle and can fit heaps of line on the spool. For rods plenty of good options like the Daiwa sandstorm or sebass, Penn Prevail, Savage 1DFR
@@fishingmad thanks for the reply, i believe Penn Prevaill 2 12ft is good, but the reel you suggested is bit expensive for me, can you suggest some cheaper one
This article I wrote should help greatly. It covers different reels in different budgets fishingmad.com.au/review/best-spinning-reels-2021 something like a Daiwa BG, Shimano Nasci, Shimano Vanford, daiwa exceller might work great. cheers
Do people here blunt the barbs on their lures? It's something I've always done when bait fishing to limit damage to the fish. Does it actually cause a lot of lost fish?
The colorado jig head comes all pre done, just tie the line like a normal jig head. The jig spinners are a little different with them you tie the leader to the small circle on the middle
@@fishingmad I've also witnessed a few that are much bigger than 500mm, just never landed one! The really big ones only eat other fish- yearling trout are thier favourite over here.

Some really good points there, I agree that the good redfin like to hold the banks and structure.
Great video can't express enough how glad I am to see the lures up close
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks, got some good vids like this for bream and flathead aswell worth checking out too
spot on, just what we needed, thanks Alan, we are off to the tackle store.
Thanks Matthew !! Yeah I keep spending a small fortune at all the tackle shops lately too.
My favorite Redfin lure is the 2.5 Z-man motor oil grub
Yep the ever reliable motor oil grub catches just about everything in any situation
Another great informative video. Looks like I have some shopping to do now LOL

Top 3 in order
1. 2.5inch paddle tails in orange or pink
2. 5-7g blades (even cheap Temu ones)
3. Love the inline spinners
Standard Ondex Spinner and a purple/pink combo stump jumper my go to Red fin lures.

Can't go past a bullet lure redfin and trout love them great review
Agreed, they are brilliant. Do you prefer the 3-0 or 5-0 minnows
@@fishingmad I prefer the 5:0 myself I find the 3cm invites the tiddelers
Awesome, yeah I caught a few big models on the 5-0 in the hot pink and yellow coloured ones some time ago
Fantastic , thanks mate ...subscribed !
Brilliant, Thanks Tim. Heaps of helpful content stuff on the channel I hope you will enjoy
I have been waiting for this video
Awesome, I hope you found it helpful
Interesting video mate. The range of lures these days is mind boggling. I remember when it used to be Rapala and not much else.

large pink and blue mepps spinner. AND even better is the full pink medium size stumjumper, i caught 40 one night on it
Awesome suggestions, Thank you !!
Love those paco spoons! Ironically I lost one to a monstrous snag just this weekend. 😩
Yeah it sucks when you lose a paco spoon or wasaby spoon. $20 bucks down the drain just like that. However i have caught some of my best redfin and trout with those spoons.
Hey mate
Redfin is my favourite fish and ive been wanting to eat one for a while but im unsure how to dispatch them humanely

hi Alan I am looking for a rod and reel setup for fishing. Bank fishing for redfin. Keep up the great work!
Great video, what size hook is good for the 3inch curl tail
Thanks, I was using a 1/8 2/0
hey you should do a review on the hawk sniper 60s hard body lure in the redfin colour
I like the halco crazy deep , 2.5 slim swim , vortex spinnerbait
Great option there, that's for sure !!
My is red zman swimz
Hi Alan, great video. Just wondering what size Colorado jig head you’d go for a 2.5 Zman soft plastic ? Thanks
For 2.5 inch grub or paddle tail i usually use a 1/0 or 2/0. The 2.0 also works really well if you jump up to the 3 inch slim swimz or 3.5 inch grubz
Trout magnets seemed to be loved by the small ones
Savage flick tales blades jackall mask vibe tenersea shad color
Awesome suggestions !!
Got some gear heading to the dam now hoping to catch a few reddies. Using a blade and 2.5 inch grub
Good luck, I hope ya catch a few good ones
Got a few nothing too big though still a lot of fun
Not to worry, It will fire down there over the holidays, so make sure you give it another good crack
Used the same 2.5 inch grub orange colour got 13 reddies in an hour great fun

What size jig heads do you use for the Slim SwimZ?
Usually 1/8 size 1/0 or 2/0
what size hws jig head do you use on Slim swim
1/8 2/0 usually

Blunting the barbs is a great idea, we do it often and haven't lost to many fish in the process. Its a great way to ensure the hooks come out easy.
Are red fin fish a pest fish in Australia ,i heard they are a bad fish in our waters
Where do you connect the line on the colorado jig head?
The colorado jig head comes all pre done, just tie the line like a normal jig head. The jig spinners are a little different with them you tie the leader to the small circle on the middle
I can catch two dozen redfin in an hour... and not one of them will be bigger than the palm of my hand!
often happens in systems with to many redfin in it, thier growth gets stunned.
@@fishingmad him kind of hoping its a side effect of low water levels from the drought. Everything is around 10-15cm. Fingers crossed they get bigger
wow thats interesting, is it a small system ?
I use 120mm lures...minimum.
wow the big stuff. I like it
