Antonio McDyess: He went from OFF-THE-RADAR to future TOP 2 PICK in LESS THAN 2 WEEKS | FPP

- Antonio McDyess was the definition of raw talent coming out of high school, but by the time he was playing college basketball for the Alabama Crimson Tide, he was one the nation’s greatest while possessing an NBA ready body. He hadn’t done anything incredible in his first two years Alabama, but all changed during the 1995 SEC Tournament and 1995 NCAA tournament, as McDyess put together a 4 game stretch that put him on the map and eventually got him selected 2nd overall in the 1995 NBA Draft. He spent his early years in Denver as a lone bright spot after the departure of Dikembe Mutombo, until he was traded to Phoenix for one great year alongside Jason Kidd. He would end up back in Denver after the Infamous Free Agent story of McDyess choosing the Denver Nuggets over the Phoenix Suns due to Dan Issel pulling out all his tricks. McDyess excelled over his next three years in Denver, but a knee injury would steal most of his ’02 season, then another would steal his full ’03 season; when he did come back his trademark athleticism would only be seen in spurts. But he would re-invent his game and become a great sixth man and serviceable starter for the great Detroit Pistons teams of the 2000s, before finishing his career with San Antonio. McDyess was a power forward in the mold and playstyle of a Shawn Kemp when he got to the league, but was serious about becoming a complete player and would do so by the second half of his career. His peak was short lived and he was a tier below the all time greats like Kevin Garnett, Dirk Nowitzki and Tim Duncan during the Golden Era of Power Forwards which Mcydess’ career overlapped. But regardless of what stage of his career he was in, Antonio McDyess was a highly valued and respected player who often gets overlooked.

This is who Amare Stoudemire reminded me of
that 98 team with Kidd, KJ, Nash, Chapman, McDyess, Cliff Robinson played a really solid Spurs team with rookie Duncan and Robinson, shows how loaded the west and league was at that point
That's a fast starting 5 for the Suns.
That 97-98 team is one of my favorite teams of all time. I was so disappointed when he signed back with Denver during the lockout shorten season.
@@edwinthaartist I think that team reaches the semi-finals only. I don't think this team beats the Lakers, Jazz or Spurs.
This man is the definition of no talk but just work. No matter what the roles gaved to him, he delivered without complaints. The most well.disciplined player we saw in the game. Even he became off.the bench he contributes a lot for the betterment of the team. We rarely see this kind of player in this modern nba
That’s cause team basketball is not a priority, this generation of nba players are hyper-individualized a stud like mcdese in todays nba prolly couldn’t accept lesser roles to be apart of winning teams
In that sense like another Antonio: Antonio Davis.
Antonio McDyess was one of my favorite players of the 90s. That free agency story at the Avalanche game was pretty wild.
Another one of my childhood favorites. Dude was so ridiculously talented.
Also, damm.....I didn't realize the squad Denver coulda had with Dikembe, Tonio, Rose, Abdul-Rauf etc.
Erick Dampier was understated through his career and deserves some recognition in a video at some point. Great rebounder in college and the NBA.
He was decent with the Warriors before he was traded to the Mavericks.
Dyess was a high flying beast on both ends of the ball. The injury slowed him down, but reshaped his game to be a top notch goon and role player.
Yeah his hips and power were crazy! When Blake Griffin was dominating college dunking, pre NBA, Antonio was the guy he was being compared to the most.
I love McDyess on Pistons. Huge heart of that core group
No doubt. I wish he would have won a ring with the Pistons.
@@Doknot-tb9ey they absolutely should have beat the Spurs. Rasheed doubling Ginobili in the corner and leaving Horry open for the game winning 3 will forever haunt my memories 😫
@@wolfwiles It continues to haunt me too. Rip was guarding Manu so Sheed just needed to guard Robert Horry.
@@Doknot-tb9ey I can still see it like yesterday. What makes it even worse was that Manu had already picked up his dribble and was stuck pinned in the corner. Tbh Sheed bailed the Spurs out. It was about to be a desperate heave at the buzzer 😫
@@wolfwiles Yeah, but those Pistons were so fun to watch.
Dude, keep doin' what you're doin'. You've got great talent & an impressive work ethic!
💯
Appreciate it!
@@ForgottenPlayerProfilesforreal this is 1 of my favorite sports channels on TH-cam now great work sir
McDyess was a Dawg.
1 Rasheed Wallace 2 Shareef Abdur Rahim 3 Antonio McDyess great stuff the 90s and 2000s were great for power forwards other very good power forwards you should also cover Chris Webber Zach Randolph Elton Brand Antawn Jamison Vin Baker
McDyess before injuries was like a combination of Shawn Kemp and Amare. He was explosive like Amare, but was a better defender and shot blocker, and was a nasty dunker like Shawn Kemp. I was glad that he rejuvenated himself with the Pistons and I wish he would have won a ring in 2005.
One of my Favorite Denver Nuggets players when they had dark days. If knee problems he would be one of the best
He had a good run. Heard his name a lot during that era. And an part of NBA Jam.
He still came back as a solid player after these knee injuries. Dice was tough and skilled.
Damn Tonio, you pulled out a gem with this one..
He was pure class. After his injury he basically turned into Charles Oakley.I remember Knicks fans were so hyped when we got him thinking he’d be dropping 20/10 again. He still had a great career and deserved a ring.
He was like the new Kemp for awhile
Facts & Correct
yup, not as flashy nor the agility, but that's what he reminded me of.
Absolutely!!!
Good thing he changed his name to Brian McKnight and started singing.
😂😂
Brian McDyess
Wtf😂😂😂😂😂.
😔😂
😂😂
Ms has had some great players come from there
interesting connection as McDyess and Nash would leave the Suns in 98, and in the years ahead would trade Kidd for Marbury and then trade Marbury for McDyess's expiring contract and use that freed up money to sign Nash
He was a Power Forward who was ahead of his time, like Shawn Kemp, they paved the way for guys like Amare Stoudemire and Blake Griffin, *high flying, power dunking PFs* can we get Joe Johnson, Antwan Jamison and LaPhonso Ellis!
Joe Johnson? He was a SG
@@lukesmith9692idiot I'm trying to get a Joe Johnson video, smart guy 🤨
this is a beautiful priceless channel.
I didn't know he was like this. Ik the old heads always praised him but didn't know why until now
I really didnt pay attention until he joined the pistons they was saying back then. He use to be a star it wasn’t a you tube back then to check this stuff out
Well, as a UK fan we remember him quite well in my nightmares.
he was the illest that year in phx, we witnessed greatness. Total shame he was manipulated into not staying in phx to build something special. Such is our luck as suns fans, usually getting the short end of it all. Not that the league is fixed or anything or that betting officials who weren't "gambling" stold a few rings from phx... certainly a far contest. But that year with JkiDD and Dyess was super special, as a suns fan I appreciate every ounce of hustle from him and all payers....
Thanks for the videos. I love 90s NBA. Greetings from Uruguay 🇺🇾
good stuff, excellent content; please continue to include as much highlights as possible.
How did I not find this channel before! Just scrolled through to see your content. Subscribed!! Thank you.
I wish him and Jason Kidd worked out like him and Mark J did in Denver
Thank you 😊
As a Nuggets fan, I'm sorry the franchise didn't give him the support he needed. Those were dark years, but Dyess showed up every night. He deserved better and I'm glad he got some shine in Detroit and San Antonio later in his career.
The Nuggets got worse when Mt. Mutombo left until you guys got Carmelo.
@@Doknot-tb9ey Agreed. That shows how important ownership is. The late 90s Nuggets were owned by a media corporation who let Mutumbo leave for nothing in return. Stanley Kroenke bought them in 2k. Some think last year's championship was a miracle. The real miracle was that the Nuggets stayed in Denver during those dark years.
McDyess is a beast!
Should have a gotten a ring 💍 but Rasheed blew it by not picking up Robert Horry when he passed the ball in bounds who got the ball back in hit the shot to send the game to overtime and tied the series instead of going up 3 games to 1 against the Spurs
My 2nd favorite player behind Kemp growing up. Despite the injuries he kept at it and came close to winning a chip. I liked his explosiveness when he was young but he was always humble and had that "hard hat/lunch box" work ethic with his rebounding and defense. Too bad injuries slowed him down in his prime.
He was the original Amare Stoudamire. Him and Kids were a pitifully underrated lob threat duo.
Dice was on par with Kemp at one point with the athleticism. You gotta do Vin Baker & K-Mart
For some reason I thought McDyess was on the Pistons championship team in 04 but he wasn't.
They had Okur and Corliss as his predecessors
The knees injuries killed his potential and he deserved more all-star appearances but Unfortunately there was just a lot of competition in the west
I remember him coming out Incredible, then fading fast. Reminds me of Sprewells career...
Brian Grant
Do theo Ratliff
He was like Amare Stoudemire, but a much better defensive player.I always said Amare was the universes way of paying back the Suns for losing McDyess
That was a terrible situation for the Suns franchise.
Mississippi legend!!
Love your work! Could you make one for Joe Smith from the same draft class?
Great Player
Mcdyss was great on the nuggets when I lived in Denver. I remember going to autograph day for the nuggets. I saw the line was super long for mcdyss, so I went and got an autograph from brant stith instead. Seemed like mcdice was the only bright spot on those nuggests teams
Lets goooo
“Best years on bad teams” damn you said it brother
van exel and mcdyess
Q-Town’s Finest. My oldest brother played with him growing up
P.S. The high school you had pictured in the beginning is wrong. That was Quitman County, not Quitman the town. I know it’s confusing, but it’s a Quitman County AND a town named Quitman.
Damn my bad, appreciate the correction
@@ForgottenPlayerProfiles It’s all good man. A lot of people out of state make that mistake just because they didn’t know. I just appreciate you for shedding light on Antonio’s career
Back in the day there was a card set released that changed the play as you moved it … cost 8 bucks and I had his… a game with pho he destroyed LA on nba on tnt and it ruined my night lol
So underrated on the pistons
Staudmarie who also played on knicks & nuggets sorry if misspelled but it was Mcdyess and i think same injury to same leg on a dunk i was fan of both when they got hurt i was WTF !!!!!
Denver should have kept dyess in 09 for bodies to throw in vs bynum, gasol and odom and the lakers. he was still starter material. it would be great if he ended his career in denver with melo and billups.
Great video! Just FYI, He went to Quitman High School in Quitman, MS. Not Quitman county.
Yeah thats my bad. Someone else let me know that was the wrong high school too.. didn't know there was a difference
pistons fan here. i didn’t forget
Dice!!!
Can my guy Josh Howard get some love ❤️ please?
The original Zion type player
Do the plasticman
Yes Stacey Augmon.
Do a Chauncey Billups profile
would of been a hall of famer if he doesnt suffer tha major knee injury
Bro please do Clifford Robinson
Not a few years, but at least 5 years of his prime, maybe 6. He had a chance at the hall of fame if he stayed healthy n landed on a championship team before he hit about 32.
Can i get a Buck Williams profile please and thanks 💯
If he never had all of those injuries..... Top 20 all time.....
I loved mcdyess! Awesome as an undersized pf! Are you secretly a Pistons fan? Lol i feel like a ton of the players you cover are former pistons
I'm Heat fan, actually. But I did love watching those pistons teams
@@ForgottenPlayerProfiles that's what's up dude, makes sense now with your profile pic lol
@@ForgottenPlayerProfiles The best was when that Pistons team dominated Kobe, Shaq and the Lakers in the 2004 Finals
Real fans remember Dice and having to look up boxscores in the newspaper to get his points for your fantasy team.
Dice had a similar career to Shawn Kemp. His prime was so short. But I thought Kemp had a better career than Dice though
Hello sir, can you do one on Rick mahorn please?
There's one former player I would say McDyess reminded me of...Len Bias
Antonio Mcnuggets
Make a Josh Smith video next
👍mcydess good player
Thanks for the info, I knew about him but not a whole not of him.
Too bad his knees gave up on him. He was supposed to be one of the best PFs of his generation.
Detroit Pistons NBA Championship 2004
It’s time for a Shannon sharpe vid
Gonna really try to be more consistent with football. But if I'm being honest, I gotta give Sterling a vid before Shannon
@@ForgottenPlayerProfiles Sterling is more forgotten than Shannon. Sterling only played seven years and left a lot on the table before the neck injury.
I didn't know Jay Electronica could hoop.
Denver Dice was a monster. Just a not so good nuggets team
Mydyess was built like a karl Malone
yeh he damner averaged 10 points with a bum knee imagine what he did wit healthy legs..he played damner a decade after tge injury n was healthy …
Miles Plumlee is 2 inchs taller and has 1 1/2 inch less vertical. I don't understand how both didn't have better careers. McDyess seemed lazy on the Suns.
Lebrons older Bro
Mc nasty
Antonio's move to the Knicks was a huge flop for him.
Don't blame ol boy for not standing for the b.s. national anthem, why should anyone do that anyway more if you're a American citizen! People coming in illegally are American citizens nowadays!!!
I do not remember McDyss being good at all, and I saw a lot of his denver games.
Do Laphonso Ellis!
