I think he would have been a great sixth man. I could have seen him winning multiple sixth man of the Year awards if he had been more willing to take a backseat on a good team.
I grew up in the Antelope Valley where Rider ended up playing and going to college before UNLV. He was in trouble long before UNLV. IIRC he is originally from Oakland, got into trouble there, came out to AV high school (which is a wasteland where no top prospects would go). The fact that no academies wanted to pick him up and give him a scholarship is very telling. He couldn't even get into a division 2 college. Rider went to AV community college (a division 3 school) after high school. Jerry Tarkanian's son was the coach and told his father about Rider. That's how Rider ended up in UNLV. This guy was a giant red flag from day one. All the talent in the world, but not desire for greatness. Best Rider story. When he got pulled over in Portland and he was busted for possession of weed, Rider was asked by the cop for his ID. Rider pulls out his basketball card and not his drivers license.
What I love about Andy hoops is that he goes out of his way to find actually interesting nba stories that many people don’t know, instead of just talking about current media hot topics like so many other nba TH-camr.
Many of the players who went pro in the 1993 NBA Draft struggled with injuries and personal issues during their playing days. Chris Webber, Penny Hardaway, Allan Houston, and Jamal Mashburn were All-Stars whose careers were cut short due to injuries. Isaiah Rider and Vin Baker were also very good NBA players, but they were plagued by personal issues.
The 90s in general had a lot of guys like that. Larry Johnson, Shawn Bradley, Grant Hill, Alonzo Mourning etc. Lots of potential great talent that would've helped carry the torch after Jordan and his era of legends aged out and retired.
I grew up in Minnesota during Rider’s time. I very much recall them trading him after Garnett’s rookie season specifically to get him away from Garnett so he wouldn’t influence him. Garnett and JR had become friends. They also traded Christian Laettner halfway through Garnett’s rookie year to pave the way. Two good moves they made in an otherwise embarrassing collection of personnel moves attempting to build around KG.
They should've kept both of them really. Certainly keep Laettner. Her grew long hair and got caught up there in Minnesota Smoking Bud so that is why their bad management traded a very talented 6'10 250 player they had just drafted 3rd.
@@JimBrave-ri1octhat deal actually worked well for Leattner with him getting an all star nod with Atlanta. Some players needs to be drafted to a perfect situation inorder to thrive and the culture with the wolves was much different from Duke under Coach K and I don't think it fitted well with his personality
@JimBrave-ri1oc Nah, both of those guys were too toxic in their own way. Laettner hated Minnesota when he got drafted and was very rebellious against the organization. When McHale drafted KG in 1995, Laettner disliked it and he got traded. I started watching Minnesota during KG's rookie season. Rider was a problem. I remember that season he had great games against the 72-10 Bulls. Minnesota lost both, but the first one was close and Rider drained a bunch of threes. The second game was close too... until KG talked trash to MJ and the GOAT put the Wolves away in the 4th. Haha.
So in response to the question if another team has ever gotten rid of their leading scorer, the 94 Hawks did. At the deadline they were the #1 seed at the time and traded away Dominique Wilkins to the Clippers for Danny Manning and then lost Manning in FA at the end of the season. Wilkins was 34 coming off an Achilles tear but was putting up All Star numbers and the FO/ ownership didn't want to pay him. This would make for a good video imo as this is one of the worst trades a team has ever made at the deadline. What other team that has had a shot at a championship trades away their franchise player for nothing?
The 2002 Pistons traded their leading scorer (Stackhouse) and won the title 2 years later. Number of points to scored is vaguely connected to being best player.
@@75aces97 I forgot about Stackhouse. The Hawks weren't a bad team they still finished with 57 wins, tied first with the Knicks, but Wilkins even at his age was still their best player. The trade looks even more horrendous after the fact because not only did Manning leave after the end of the season he never became the star people thought he'd be so he wasn't even worth giving up not only their best player at the time but their second best player in the history of the Hawks franchise.
@@CrazyxEnigma I completely forgot Manning only stayed for the end of that season, and had no memory of where he played after that. I guess he thought he fit better in Phoenix? But by the time he got there the key players were old and in fast decline. Leaving was bad for Atlanta, but not good for him either. But while Dominique's recovery was amazing, he was pretty washed by the next season, so I thought the trade was a chance worth taking.

Agree. This is just one of those myths that just kept getting repeated enough to become accepted. Rider was 4th in the league in scoring with the Hawks when the trouble started. He was vocal about the Hawks' slow start & started knocking heads with Lenny Wilkins & the front office as soon as it was realized the Hawks weren't going to contend. He was "eating" though.
Rider had the attitude of Lebron and Iverson put together. He thought he was bigger than the game, thought he didn’t need to listen to his coaches, and had the off the court issues. Problem was, he wasn’t as good as Iverson and wasn’t 6’8” and catered to by the league like Lebron has been.
this is a blasphemous statement as far as comparing him to iverson. youd never hear Iverson complain about not getting an all star nod. hed just go out and drop 50 while getting fouled 15 times.

You asked whether any star player or leading scorer had been traded by their team. I'm not sure if he was the leading scorer or not but the New York Knicks traded Carmelo Anthony who was also known as a very selfish ball dominant kind of player. I can't think of anybody else on that Knicks team that would have been scoring more points than him but I'm sure it's possible.
In 1994 the #1 seed Hawks traded their leading scorer and franchise player Dominique Wilkins. He had come back from the Achilles tear still a star, until KD he was the only one, and him being 34 ownership wasn't interested in paying him so they traded him to the Clippers for budding star Danny Manning. The kicker is Danny Manning left the Hawks in Free agency at the end of the season so they had a shot at the title and gave away their franchise player for nothing, one of the worst fumbles by a FO in NBA history!
In my opinion, this is where T'Wolves messed up. They drafted Laettner the year before. Arguably the greatest college basketball player of all time. He was arrogant but still discipline. Rider was good but not disciplined. Wolves would have been better served by drafting another discipline player like Cheaney who had Knight at Indiana or Hurley who was Laettners teammate at Duke with Coach K. Wolves also had bad luck in lottery. In 93, they had #4 pick, #3 pick was Jamal Mashburn. In 94, they had #4 pick, #3 pick was Grant Hill. In 95, they had #5 pick, #4 was Rasheed Wallace.
i remember hearing college basketball analysts talking about this guy as a freshman at north carolina saying he they were starting an nba team the first player they would take was jr rider. sad that drugs took their toll on him
Another example of wasted talent. This guy was a force that should of been a 25,000 point scorer who should of been a lock for the HOF based on his skill level.
Jr . Rider is from Oakland, He used to run with these Cats from the Town, Steve Rankin an Hook Mitchell , All 3 of Them had Nasty Hoop Talent an All 3 of Them Lacked the Discipline to become Superstars which was in Them Naturally
Used to try imitate the Rider heave from the sideline as a kid with my friends, we didn't have the internet then so our game of the week and 30 mins of NBA action was all we had to watch in Australia lol.. Good times
what is an illegal cell phone lol? and yeah i remember using the pop cans to smoke in high school, easiest quickest way to make a pipe, just need a knife and 1 minute
We played him in 88 at the Gridley tournament Encinal V Tokay. Won the dunk contest but broke his arm going up for a dunk in the game. He was their center and was the best player in the tourney by far
I never understand when these high profile athletes have the world in the palm of there hands and they throw it all away. I guess it’s an example of too much too soon without having the maturity to recognize the opportunity that is enigma presented.
I actually remember him more for his 2K apparences, he was in the 2001 Lakers and that team is a must in every 2K game ... so yeah, he is really good as a role player. Too bad that was his last season.
The highlight at the 10:54 mark was called a travel lol. Rider joined the Lakers in 2001 and won a championship with them against the Sixers. That fact should’ve been included in this video.
I am one of the few who actually got to watch J.R. when he was playing for Encinal High School in Alameda, CA. Why was I "one of the few"? Because over his four years at Encinal, he only played about half a season. The rest of the time, he was off the team for either disciplinary or scholastic reasons. The one game I did see him play, he was disinterested, drifting through the game at half-speed. Barely played defense unless the play came right into his area... Scored 20 or so without much effort at all, and his team lost by 10. His obvious talent and physical supremeness was completely wasted. He'd get into trouble for silly things, like getting caught pitching pennies on the street corner, etc... And his excuse would be "The 'Man' is always out to get me" or somesuch. For awhile at junior college and at UNLV, it looked from the outside like he was starting to figure life out, but nope... Too bad. In my estimation, he could have been a truly great superstar on the level of Jordan, Magic, Kobe, etc. Hope this more recent news shows that he's finally started to get things on the right track.
If this was blackballing, then Rider did what he could to keep himself out of the league. When youre a dunce and a headcase but youre young and talented, people think it's cute. When you're 30 and still do it, people get tired of you. As for a team trading their best scorer, Denver traded Kiki Vandeweghe and went to the conference finals the next year. The Pistons traded Jerry Stackhouse in 2002 and 2 years later won a title. Seattle traded Xavier McDaniel and steadily got better for the next 5 years. Sometimes its best to sell high on a guy with good numbers while you can still find a chump to bite.

@@JimBrave-ri1ocBruh what lol. Did you really just say players then were more athletic???
I actually wanted Robert Pack to win that dunk contest in '94!
Great video, but can I say how smooth that Manscape transition was? 😂😂😂
500k subs, congrants Andy 👏
Whoever gave JR a 9 on that dunk in that time period is a hater to end all haters lmao. Anyways, it's good he's turning his life around a bit.
I’m confused on the charge of illegal phones, what makes a phone illegal?
i remember hearing college basketball analysts talking about this guy as a freshman at north carolina saying he they were starting an nba team the first player they would take was jr rider. sad that drugs took their toll on him
Are you confusing J R Rider with
J R Reid????
Rider played at Unlv
@@phillipcotton833 yep i think i am thank you for correcting me.
@@danielcorreard3746 no problem 👍
As a Kings fan, that behind-the-back save into a made basket lives rent free in my head 🥲
Another example of wasted talent. This guy was a force that should of been a 25,000 point scorer who should of been a lock for the HOF based on his skill level.
At least now we have Anthony Edwards who is basically the reincarnation of Isaiah Rider
That ad transition for Manscaped was fitting ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Jr . Rider is from Oakland, He used to run with these Cats from the Town, Steve Rankin an Hook Mitchell , All 3 of Them had Nasty Hoop Talent an All 3 of Them Lacked the Discipline to become Superstars which was in Them Naturally
He has a ring with Shaq and Kobe. I’d say that’s a fantastic career.
Love Rider man, first jersey I ever owned. That old 34 Timberwolves
Congrats on 500K well deserved.
Oh yes Isiah Rider was wondering what happened to him
I remember him playing it. It's still sad how no team wanted him 😢
JR Rider was dope back then 💯🔥🤙🏾
He was a role model and inspiration for me in my troubled youth. Overhated, and underrated #34 RIP SR🫶
Used to try imitate the Rider heave from the sideline as a kid with my friends, we didn't have the internet then so our game of the week and 30 mins of NBA action was all we had to watch in Australia lol.. Good times
Nice new font on the captions! May I know the font as well? Loved it! Been following you for years now. More power to you
Oh yeah thanks Andy!! Appreciate it!!
Completely forgot about this guy until his inclusion in the NBA 2K’s MyTeam mode
Josh Smith got amnestied after being a leading scorer
Love your videos❤
Best channel for nba IMO
In my Rick James voice...Cocaine is a helluva drug🤣
0:17 That shyt was a travel💀
what is an illegal cell phone lol? and yeah i remember using the pop cans to smoke in high school, easiest quickest way to make a pipe, just need a knife and 1 minute
Such a timely video.
Jr Was a BEAST!!! Enjoyed watching Him & was a Lil Disappointed in how He Pissed away what could've been a HOF Career!!!
We played him in 88 at the Gridley tournament Encinal V Tokay. Won the dunk contest but broke his arm going up for a dunk in the game. He was their center and was the best player in the tourney by far
2:10 W Face reveal! Up u til this point, I Never knew what Andy hoops looked like. He got swagger!
Andy hoops , you went from fat to skinny , you came up bro
I never understand when these high profile athletes have the world in the palm of there hands and they throw it all away. I guess it’s an example of too much too soon without having the maturity to recognize the opportunity that is enigma presented.
Hahaha, I remember cutting class and smoking weed from a soda can.
I remember his whole career. I was 10 years old when he was drafted
Such wasted potential, basically. Some are just unteachable and uncoachable.
Damn I never knew any of this and Ik a lot about nba history 😱… great video/info Andy as always!
This is your funniest video bruh 😂
2:29 is this Andy?
This dude is every NBA 2k MyPlayer
I actually remember him more for his 2K apparences, he was in the 2001 Lakers and that team is a must in every 2K game ... so yeah, he is really good as a role player. Too bad that was his last season.
Rider wasn't a good player as team player. Period!
Kidnapping your own child is the goofiest charge I ever heard😭
Rider is definitely a underrated player I need to see more of🔥
Andyhoops about to hit 500k!
There's goes the main man,
Mr. Andy Hoops!
The highlight at the 10:54 mark was called a travel lol.
Rider joined the Lakers in 2001 and won a championship with them against the Sixers. That fact should’ve been included in this video.
6:34 What’s this illegal phone in 1996?
Rider was so good, they made a movie about him. If I remember correctly, it was called "Easy Rider."
Hard Rider is the correct film name for him.
I fcking love Andy hoops. Favorite nba channel and have been for YEARS
Saying he had a drug problem and trying to give him drug counseling over WEED is pretty damn hilarious and stupid.
Holy crap i remembered during the time that rider was one of the up and coming guys in the league then suddenly fell off a cliff.
Yoooo wtf is an illegal cell phone? 😂
Jaylen Brown your next video Andy Hoops 😤😤😤😤😤😤
Bro, unexpected face reveal lol
I never knew he was Asian but now after seeing him, I definitely hear an Asian accent. I might stop watching his videos now
@@holdmyweight3597 lmao dammmm why???
Man playing GTA irl
