That mother seemed incredibly calm considering there were so many lions around her and the baby, it's like she hadn't really bonded with it. I hope the park rangers will keep a close eye on their future bearing in mind the decline of the rhino.
So unfortunately it was found during the intervention that the mother was carrying an infection from birthing the calf. Both the mother and calf were treated accordingly and in the days that followed the scientific team did indeed keep track of their progress to make sure all was fine.
I believe the Lions knew the mother was sick and that the baby was very vulnerable. All the mother could do is use her size to back the lions off. You can tell she did not have a lot of energy and the lions knew it. Carnivores definitely know when animals are not acting their normal self. Looks like it was a training lesson for the young cubs. Adult lion was not to active in the take down, maybe being cautious also. The Mother Rhino was calm and was saving her energy for when it was really needed. Lucky the assistance was there to protect the Baby Rhino, usually that is not the case. Some animals are close to extinction, maybe that was the reason rangers assisted. Baby Rhino lived to see another day....let us all wish a long life for Momma and baby.
You are spot on in your observation regarding the mother of the sub adult females (I use the term sub adult loosely as they were around 2 at the time) and their 4 year old male older brother. However, what saved this rhino was a series of fortunate events where a harem of zebra came over a rise and distracted the lions for long enough for the mother rhino and her calf to move out of the area. Certainly, the decision was made by the scientific team to intervene due to the endangered status of rhino’s due to Rhino poaching. It was during this intervention that it was realized the mother was carrying an infection from birthing the calf which is why her response was so lethargic. Really appreciate your comment and input. @lordbottaro5449. What's bold when NONE of the lions tried to distract the mother given how much of them there was ? what's bold when an adult lioness showed fear or a tiny calf ? look at the distance sometimes between calf & mother & yet they failed, those coward clumsy lions all put together don't even have the brain power of that lil rhino calf.😂
Are you for real? A lumbering Rhino couldn't defend this calf against a pride of lions in a hundred years. They would simply wear the calf down over a few hours. It was only human intervention that saved it.
@@KrugerGoneWild I see, so sad that the Lions actually hurt it, I thought otherwise. I'm so glad that you guys intervened! Honestly, even if the mom wasn't "lethargic" I think it would have been good to step in, just b/c they are endangered. Such a magnificent animal.
Just sent through my last comment right before your intervention. In a way glad to see but didn’t think this was condoned behaviour by wildlife park staff. Happy to see both baby and mother get a second chance and the lions should look for some other prey I hope 👍
Thank you so much for taking time to watch the entire video and your comments are certainly appreciated. I agree with you fully, I also believe that we let nature takes it course and that we don’t intervene unless the animal has been impacted through human element. However, due to the critically endangered status of Rhino’s, interventions in cases like this do occur and these decisions are made by the scientific team. The intervention took place two days after this incident so the lions weren’t impacted at all. Upon darting the mother, on assessment it was realized that she was actually carrying an infection from birthing the calf which is why her response to the lions looked extremely lethargic. Hope this helps your understanding of the video and the events which took place 🙏💪
100%. It was certainly an intriguing sighting. Regardless of the health of the mother, in reality, if the lions have the desire and the persistence, they could’ve worn her out in good or bad health. What’s amazing about this Pride is that it’s certainly a learnt and specialized behavior. We’ve seen it a number of times where the sub adults (they have almost reached adulthood in this video) have taunted and teased full grown rhino’s with zero chance of success whilst that male (who’s quite young himself) and his mother watches on. It’s a behavior which has started to pay off in circumstances like the above where mothers are isolated with new born calves. Fortunately in this case, a harem of zebra came from over the rise and the mother lioness turned her attention towards them instead. Had these lioness’s been fully grown I have no doubt that this calf wouldn’t have made it that day. It’s the lack of experience of the young lionesses and the unwillingness of the mother to potentially injure herself that most likely caused them to divert there attention. This allowed the Rhino’s enough time to move off. Ultimately though, the mother being sick certainly had a huge impact on this particular case.
I’ve watched plenty of similar videos and never seen an adult rhinoceros behaving so calmly when under attack by a bunch of lions. Especially with a baby there too. Is this rhino sick or been sedated??
You are 100% correct. She was carrying an infection from birthing the calf. Over and above that, it would be almost impossible to isolate the calf without tranquillizing her.
As is his right. He’s the one that keeps those females alive or hyenas would just be wiping out female lions left and right. When the males are away, hyenas will follow the pride of female lions and steal every prey they kill.
How did they get rid of lions at last? I mean how did the lions go away etc. we needed full footage😒 And furthermore how did you assist them there should be complete video 😑 This was so sooo interesting to watch but i was so curious to watch more of them huh i am really sad😓
Sorry for that. Essentially a harem of zebras came up and over the rise and the lionesses turned their attention to them instead. This gave the Rhino and her calf just enough time to get away from the lions. The intervention took place two days after this incident. They hid themselves in a drainage line in quite a rocky terrain so took a while to track them down. Essentially the mother was treated for her infection from birthing the calf which caused her lethargic response to the lions and the calf was treated with anti biotics as well as had his wounds disinfected.
OMG!!!!!! Please help and protect the baby and the mama from lions!!!! Don't leave them alone what if the mama might be sick from her wounds and the lions come back?????!!!!
The scientific team and vet did intervene and assess and give appropriate care and meds to both the Mom and Calf. It was found on assessment during the intervention that the mother was carrying an infection from birthing the calf and this was treated as well.
@jason not necessarily. It only takes a lion to jump on the back of the rhino and by distracting it, the other lions take the calf. Seen it happen in countless other videos such as elephants and buffalo. The mere distraction is normally enough.
@@afrofeast kudos to you recognising that they're different animals. Without your preeminent observation, none of us viewing that animal would have been any the wiser. 👏
I see your point and it would certainly guarantee it’s survival to adult hood but there has to be a line and it’s one thing intervening as custodians of these endangered animals after the fact, it’s another to completely remove a calf from its mother and therefore completely affecting the natural order. Ultimately, the intervention was about giving an endangered animal the best chance of surviving in a normal natural habitat rather than to guarantee its survival if that makes sense. I think if there numbers had to drop below a certain number, where it was certainly life or death for the species, something drastic like what you’ve posed would then certainly be required. How that number is decided though is another thing completely. One could say, it’s better to do sooner rather than later. On that note what do you think about private owners being able to breed, dehorn and sell these horns in to the market? It would certainly drastically drop the price and also increase the Rhino population.
Agreed, there are cases where lions have predated on larger herbivores like the ones you’ve mentioned but it’s a rare phenomenon rather than a daily occurrence as you say. These animals are highly opportunistic and they certainly saw an opportunity. In saying that however, this Pride are certainly adapting their behavior as I have witnessed them playing and toying with Rhino’s a few times. Most of which are more out of curiosity but it is interesting to see that they are starting to find a niche and in circumstances like the above, success.

Are you for real? A lumbering Rhino couldn't defend this calf against a pride of lions in a hundred years. They would simply wear the calf down over a few hours. It was only human intervention that saved it.

@@KrugerGoneWild Most welcome :) Have a wonderful evening!
Was that blood shown, on the baby Rhino? (almost at the end of the Video) 😢
Great question, it’s an anti septic which was applied into the puncture and surface wounds.
@@gonicito - the mom was lethargic never seen a rhino mom that doesnt react to defend her youngster - quite unusual ...
@@chrisschopenhauer6261 She was lethargic due to an infection.
I was wondering why mom was not reacting at all. From the comments I found out that she was sick. So baby had to defend himself on his own. …
@@KrugerGoneWild Wow! You are awesome. 💯👍
Right to live. Best support for the wildlife.
That mother Rhino I think was not feeling well
Why?

Amazing vide ❤
Thank you my brother 🙏🏅
I’ve watched plenty of similar videos and never seen an adult rhinoceros behaving so calmly when under attack by a bunch of lions. Especially with a baby there too. Is this rhino sick or been sedated??
See my response on your latest comment 💪
Don't panic Mamma has a poker face. I'm confused though did they sudate her? Was she sick?
You are 100% correct. She was carrying an infection from birthing the calf. Over and above that, it would be almost impossible to isolate the calf without tranquillizing her.
@@KrugerGoneWild I'm glad you were able to help them!

I noticed how the male lion just sat back and watched.....if the lions had caught/killed the calf he'd have rushed in and eaten it himself....
As is his right. He’s the one that keeps those females alive or hyenas would just be wiping out female lions left and right. When the males are away, hyenas will follow the pride of female lions and steal every prey they kill.

Surprising when these power blocks are next to each other without conflict
How did they get rid of lions at last? I mean how did the lions go away etc. we needed full footage😒 And furthermore how did you assist them there should be complete video 😑 This was so sooo interesting to watch but i was so curious to watch more of them huh i am really sad😓
Sorry for that. Essentially a harem of zebras came up and over the rise and the lionesses turned their attention to them instead. This gave the Rhino and her calf just enough time to get away from the lions. The intervention took place two days after this incident. They hid themselves in a drainage line in quite a rocky terrain so took a while to track them down. Essentially the mother was treated for her infection from birthing the calf which caused her lethargic response to the lions and the calf was treated with anti biotics as well as had his wounds disinfected.
would the baby rhino get drowsy from drinking the mother's milk after she was tranquilized ?
Brilliant question, the amount of sedative that filters through to the milk is almost negligible and therefore won’t have any effects.
@@KrugerGoneWildthanks... i was wondering if the little one would be able to keep up with mom being drowsy !! and glad you saved it !!!
@@KrugerGoneWild Thank you so much to kind-hearted scientific team and the veterinarians who helped this poor little family!!!🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️

Great people. God bless you
As long as the mother is there, lions have no chance
@jason not necessarily. It only takes a lion to jump on the back of the rhino and by distracting it, the other lions take the calf. Seen it happen in countless other videos such as elephants and buffalo. The mere distraction is normally enough.
@@967mviews2Well, elephants and buffalos aint Rhinos. There's a reason she's called a RHINO!

@harrykey2448 if @afro hadn't kindly pointed out that it was a rhino, then I would have thought it was a blue whale.
If you are going to intervene, wouldn't it make more sense to raise the calf till it's large enough to defend itself, then release?
When the baby is lying down with the guy filming with his phone with looks like a bandage, there seems to be a black fury thing moving on his , is it his neck. I don’t know but maybe I’m going mad? Subscribed by the way. Never knew this channel existed
Thank you so much for subscribing 🙏💪 So if I’m correct and you’re referring to when the guy is crouching over the Rhino Calf with his phone in his hand; I think what you’re seeing moving is the Rhino Calf’s ear which is popping out from the side of the bandage? Hope this helps.
