He found writing songs for records really tough because he always expected more from himself. He could never live up to his own standards. He still writes music, mostly just instrumentals, just not for publication. To him the music is enough the words are extraneous. To fully appreciate how talented he is you need to check out “New York State of Mind” live from the Old Grey Whistle Test. It is an amazing performance.
This song and the songs Billy did around this were so classic and loving to a certain type of American music. There are many types of classic American music, i.e., jazz. This was in no way negating those influences, but paying tribute to the songs our parents and grandparents grew up with. Very well executed. A love song to doo-wop.
You are right about what Billy said, he hates the songwriting process but he loves performing. He stopped making albums when he was having the least amount of fun anymore. He made 12 (pop) albums, the last one in 1993, but he's still performing to sold out crowds to this day! 74 and living his best life, tbh. Have you checked out Scenes From an Italian Restaurant yet? Studio or live version (Live from Long Island is my fave) you can't miss.
He does hate writing. Unfortunately for him and fortunately for us, he's so damn good at it. He's one of the great greats who pays tribute to classic American genres, with his own creative spin.
Great song. Joel has a Christmas-themed song, "She's Right on Time", if you're looking for something seasonal. Otherwise, I recommend "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" for your next song from him.
Beethoven was the same way about composition, BTW. As powerful and soaring as his music was, he sweated and strained over every note. Ultimately that's why Billy Joel eventually quit writing new songs. He didn't think any of his compositions were good anymore, so he just quit. He still performs, but he doesn't put out new material.
Billy Joel recorded all the vocal parts for this song himself. His band acted them out for the video.
Each fantastic voice is Billy! ❤
Did not know that, thanx for the info.
The song features Joel on lead vocals, all backing vocals, and percussive sounds such as finger snaps and hand claps
paying homage to the 50s doowop groups. Billy recorded all vocals himself.

My man yearbooks I've got 'em from K - 12. Still on my bookshelf.
Getting out of school was the parole board, not time for a good education. High school was like Lord Of The Flies.
Always love Billy Joel! Recommend Big Shot next. I think you'll dig it!
Beautiful song ❤
I went to 8 different schools in 11 years and We lived in the same house all that time. It was Chicago in the 60's. {bussing}. I hated school too.
Congratulations for breaking the 50k mark.
Epic tune 😎

Doo wop music is what I think it's called. I like Billy Joel.
One of my dad‘s favorite Billy Joel….. I was in high school
You got it! Acappella, no instruments at all!
Hey Girl by Billy Joel
Thank you. I never missed it either. Life is so much better now. Going to five different high schools probably didn't help matters.lol

He says he likes having written but not the writing process.
I don't miss school either. Check out My Life by him
Like in Rocky.
Doo Wop/Rap.
