Being constantly sexually abused by her father, Jenny is damaged. Some people hate Jenny, but she is the same Jenny that treated Forrest with love, respect and gentleness. It's just that she's only learned that love causes pain.

P.S. what Forrest says when the mics cut out is: Sometimes, when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs, and sometimes they don't go home at all. And that's a bad thing.

A great movie to pick. I’d hate how some ppl tend to think this movie is conservative with its admittedly simple retelling of American history and that Jenny is so annoying.
      1. The movie from one video analysis is actually a retelling of the American myth is as the years go on by. Forrest IS America’s spirit. Forrest sees desegregation, the effects of Vietnam, the presidents from 1960-1980s, Beatles, drugs, entrepreneurship, the effects of space travel, and even the running craze of the 70s-80s. I all of these things Americans lived through, trying to find meaning or just being swept by the culture.
      2. Jenny was abused and as Forrest out “sometimes there jsut ain’t enough rocks.” Jenny had issues, and the story refuses to simply say “oh poor her. Look at what was done to her.” As we are living in Forrest’s perspective, we can’t ever get a full picture.
If you want another heartwarming story that does tell history with memorable characters, plz watch the free TH-cam series: History if the Seattle mariners .

@@killinglonliness88I guess it's paraphrasing then. Either way people got the idea.
I wonder why they didn't include his short speech in the movie. It was well written but maybe the audience alreadybknew how he felt and they didn't want Gump to become political.

@@killinglonliness88 I understood perfectly what he intended, knowing the original line. I am mentally disabled. I am not upset with the paraphrasing or not using the exact quote.
It's like being angry at paraphrasing "I study war so my son may study science so his son might study arts" rather than saying the full quote. It has the same impact.
Either way, it's also rude to point out these simple mistakes, as it shows that you are ableist and expect perfection from others.

And she apologized for pushing Forrest away in the end, and they made up after she was able to heal somewhat and recover mentally.
When did Lt. Dan apologize after pulling Forrest to the floor to yell in his face in the hospital, insulting him, and treating him like garbage for some time? He and Forrest made up along the way and worked together in the end. Yet Lt. It's nice to see a reactor actually understand Jenny instead of bashing her, which is the popular hot take. The thing about Jenny that is easy to miss if you're not familiar with sexual trauma and its effects on a person, is that her literal personality bedrock was shaped from childhood to believe she was damaged and less than, only deserving of abuse. She didn't feel good enough for Forrest, she didn't feel like she deserved true happiness. That's part of what creates the repeat abusers cycle and the horrible self-care with drugs and risky sex, etc.

When Lt. Dan caught up with Forrest in New York, there’s the scene of them crossing the street. You missed that one. It’s a not so subtle nod to Ratso Rizzo in Midnight Cowboy… ANOTHER movie you should see. BTW: that line “hey, I’m walking here!” wasn’t a line in the Midnight Cowboy script. That was Dustin Hoffman actually mad. They didn’t have the budget to shut down a Manhattan street so there were real cabbies coming and going. That was a pissed off Hoffman. 😄 They left it in the movie.

Jenny didnt want Forrest to be her BOYFRIEND. That doesnt mean she didnt care about him.
She knew she was troubled bc of her bad, abusive childhood. She didnt want to involve Forrest in her messed up life.
Also. Forrest was mentally slow. Its ok for a person of "normal" intelligence to not want to be in a romantic relationship with someone who has the mentality of a child.
She always loved him. That doesnt mean they were supposed to be together as a couple... and i always find it so weird when people are nasty about Jenny and say "why didnt she get with Forrest shes so mean!" Completely ignoring or missing the fact that she has low self esteem. Ptsd from childhood abuse, no plan in life, and she KNOWS that. She protected Forrest FROM her, bc she knew she shouldnt be around him til she got her life together.
Also, no, ot wouldnt be better if Lt. Dan died, he just had some stuff to work through.

She couldve come back and he wouldve done it-took care of her no questions asked. But bc she wasnt selfish, she didnt, she gutted it out on her own.
She wrote Forrest once she had her shit together & was taking care of herself bc she had a little boy-Forrests-to look after and wasnt goung to be around long term. That was her looking after her child, not herself.

What I love about this movie is how everyone around Forrest is surving tremendous trauma but since he thinks in such a sequential way, it doesn't really affect how he views them. His life story is incredible, but underneath it all, his mother was a single mom in the 50s raising a neuro divergent son, Bubba was a poor, black neuro divergent man who grew up in the deep south during segregation, Lieutenant Dan was dealing with the trauma of being an amputee and questioning his faith in God, and Jenny was a victim of such horrible abuse that she self sabotaged because she felt she didn't deserve to be happy. Those personal details would shape our perception of these people, but Forrest didn't see it that way. All Forrest saw was that they were good people who needed and deserved his love. It's a simple concept that we all could learn from.

My parents got the soundtrack, a 2 CD set, when it was new, and I agree that it is excellent, though the Jackson Browne song (Running on Empty) is conspicuously missing.
Though it isn't my favorite film, it is among the best made ones that I have ever watched. The special effects with the historical footage into which the main character is inserted still impress me, which is especially remarkable now that the film's debut is nearly 30 years old.

When Jenny tells Forrest that he didn't know what love was, the irony is that it's Jenny who doesn't know what love is and only realized she loved Forrest as more than a friend when she was dying. She married Forrest, I believe, because he had always wanted to marry her. She knew he would be the most loving father to their son because he had always been so good to her. While he suffered losses, Jenny ultimately gave him the ultimate gift--a child born of their love (and a child who would never be abused as she was and would receive the parental love she never had known).

Jenny‘s behavior throughout her life is a direct result of her being molested as a child. It is not unusual for victims of child molestation to wind up as drug addicts, prone to suicide and have low self-esteem. Jenny did not believe she was good enough for Forrest because he was so sweet and she was damaged goods.
For many years people would blame the victim for what happened to them rather than blaming and punishing the pedophile so the victim lives their entire life thinking that it was their fault they were molested.

Actually going to a Bubba Gump Shrimp is on my bucket list.
(And random note, Lt Dan said "Danger Close" on the airstrike. That means go ahead and drop it on top of me. Target is already on top of me. So aim well if you can, and if you can't I'm ready to accept whatever happens.)

You are correct about Jenny. In a lot of cases, people who are in emotional pain don't want to burden anyone else with their pain and sorrow because they don't want anyone else to feel like they do. I know this all too well. I suffer every single day from what my ex-wife and her family did to me. There are days that I don't get out of bed until I've come up with 3 or 4 good reasons not to completely give up and.....well......"end the pain." But I just keep my head down and soldier on for my 2 daughters. I refuse to let them grow up without me. But once they become adults.......who knows lol. But you're right, Jenny didn't feel like she deserved someone like Forest because of what she went through. If you hear people say that you are worthless enough times, you start to believe it.

    1. The music rights alone must have cost a small fortune💲💲
    2. Kurt Russell did the voice for Elvis.
    3. IRL Sally Fields is only 10 years older than Tom Hanks.
    4. Having gotten his degree Forrest would have gone into the Army as an officer like Lt. Dan. Not a recruit. His ASVAB kills that.
    5. He actually saved Lt Dan twice. Once in the field and again to get him out of his post war funk and Dan turned his life around.
    6. Normally an enlisted Army person would be fully aware of his/her separation date.
    5. Jenny did indeed give him the best gift ever (it wasn't the shoes)😋
    8. Jenny died of Hep-C from dirty needles when she was in Caliphony..
    9. It's ironic that Lt. Dan told the guys to take care of their feet because he loses his.
    10. At the rally Forrest says, "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that."
    11. You have had a ride through recent US history and culture. From Elvis, John Lennon, Abby Hoffman to Vietnam and Watergate. Even the jogging craze of the 70's. About the only thing left out was streaking.
    13. "Sometimes I guess there're aren't enough rocks"
    14. Haley Joel Osmentt/Forrest Jr. steals the show in "The Sixth Sense" with Bruce Willis.
    15. Often when he's finishing a segment about death, he ends it by saying "That's all I have to say about that"
16 Keep in mind if Jenny wasn't wasting her life seeking men like her father and was with Forrest he/we wouldn't have had this incredible journey.

Here's a historical error. When Jenny is snorting coke in Studio 54, the song "Get Down Tonight" by KC and the Sunshine Band is playing. This song was released in 1975. But Hurricane Carmen happened in 1974.

I'm happy you can see what I see about Jenny. I've seen alot of other movie reactions and there were people that talked bad about her. She was no angel, i know, but she had issues she didn't ask for. Mostly men that were angry at her but anyways i enjoyed your reaction. 👍

It's funny. Everyone that reacts to this movie has the same reaction about Jenny. I never got mad at her though. I knew she was messed up because of her abuse and had a different life which was better Forest not be a part of. I think she kind of knew that too. But she always cared about him.

Jenny told Forrest to get away from her because she didn't want to corrupt his innocence. She was treated like trash by her abusive father and that's how she saw herself. She didn't think she was good enough for someone as good as Forrest. But of course, she was genuinely happy to see him after he'd returned from Vietnam which is why she called out to him and gave him a hug. He was her best friend after all.
