You leave out a few important facts. One of the popes (I can't remember which one) in effect ordered Catholics in England to carry out a "hit" onElizabeth (assassinate her) so that the Catholic Mary Queen of Scots could replace her as England's Queen. A small group of priests, some English and some from the Continent, did meet somewhere in England and "conferre dabout carrying out the plot. But they were detected and arrested. A few of the foreign priests managed to escape back to the Coninent, either Italy and Spain. But the English priests were subjected to the truly barbaric punishment of being "hanged, drawn and quartered." In effect subjected to death by a long , slow, extremely painful torture.

You removed from the comments my account of the "Babinton plot" to free Mary Queen of Scots , imprisoned by Elizabeth in England, to escape to her relatives in France, and follow up this "operation" with an assassination of Elizabeth.
