This is outstanding. I am Catholic, my cousin is Orthodox. I remember he told me he doesn't have so much a theological issue with the filioque but that the Western Church did not have permission to do such a thing. I remember when Pope Benedict removed the title of Patriarch of the West from his titles. He did this in an effort to remove the bloviated titles of the pope. However, the Patriarch of Constantinople issued a rebuke as this was seen by the east as an attempt by the pope to be the patriarch of the world. It is fascinating. At the end of the day, we humans just have too much pride.

    • @Nutrition_Nut
      @Nutrition_Nut 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

There are theological reasons though outside of you can't change the creed. Mainly that if I understand correctly, that when speaking of the Trinity, it either has to be true of all of the members of the trinity, or only true about one. Thus you can't have the Holy Spirit coming from both the Father and the Son without (albeit inadvertently) calling into question the divinity of the Holy Spirit.

    • @charlesmhorn
      @charlesmhorn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

@@Nutrition_Nut It's language. The Greek and Latin mean different things. Recent conversations suggest that both the west and east believe the same thing. The Holy Spirit is generated and proceeds from the father. The word proceeds in the west does not mean generated as it does in Greek. Rather I proceed out of my door but my house did not generate me. Christ can also send the Holy Spirit. However, in the Greek, it is better not to use the term as it would suggest Jesus generates the Holy Spirit. He does not. So the Catholic and Orthodox Church agree. John 15:26. Last note, this addition to the creed was added to fight heresy in the west that sought to show that Jesus was not fully God but that the Holy Spirit was another name for God. Anyways, I've read a ton on this. I have found that most people do not give an honest take of the various arguments. Language is a sticky thing. Words mean different things in different languages.

I'm Eastern Orthodox and a Scot (Orthodox Christianity came to Scotland through St. Ninian who died in 432 AD). You did a good job here. Thank you for that.Sometimes people ask me if we Orthodox believe in Christ or read the Bible. It's pretty pitiful how little people know about Christian history. They must think the Bible fell from the sky!A few basic questions might be answered on the 'Theoria' TH-cam video's done by Fredrika Mathewes Green.

The people who have asked me about Orthodox are shocked to find out that the the western Church, known as the Roman Catholic, was the result of the schism. And many do not know of the resulting splits such as the Lutheran from the Roman Church. NIce to see other Orthodox here. Blessings.

Bonnie Johnston, that claim about St Ninian is totally false and crazy . It;s like you claiming that St Bede the Venerable was a secret Russian monk. Total fib! St. Ninian was a Briton who'd trained in Rome. His Episcopal See was named after St Martin of Tours ( Latin Church ). He was ALWAYS part of the Latin Church and ALWAYS obedient to the authority of the Pope. He had nothing to do with what you refer to as "Orthodox". That term was not in use when St. Ninian was alive. There's no association between St Ninian, what you now call "Orthodoxy". Next you'll also claim that St Patrick was a secret Greek cleric.

As an Orthodox Christian I have to say that this is one of the best presentations of church history I have seen. A lot of historians have maintained that the eventbin 1054 was an excommunication of the entire Eastern and Western halves of the Church but in reality it was between just Humbert and the Patriarch. Thise excommunications were rescinded in the 1960's I believe.

I don't believe those "lifting of anathemas" have any force; The RC's are still estranged from the Orthodox Faith, and show no signs of repentance; In fact, in the last century or so, it's gotten worse.
I believe the best we can hope for is individual conversions to Orthodoxy.

"Goodness" requires a likeness to that which is Good; In the case of the Orthodox Christian, Who; The God-man Jesus Christ, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit.
I daresay that without faith in God, the Holy Trinity, and in particular the person of the God-man Jesus Christ and His death and Resurrection, with the fullness of the Orthodox Faith, you have no justification for your worldview.
On what basis do you logic? On what basis do you science? What foundation have your morals?
The most important question: What is going to happen when you die?
Nothing good, I'm afraid. The same goes for me, in my current state: An Orthodox Christian lacking repentance towards God. I am the worst man I know... Yet God, in His mercy, provides for our sustenance, gives us to rise each day for another shot at repentance...
Maybe today is the day that you give up your false autonomy, and cry out to Jesus Christ to save you from this bitter life full of death and decay. He stands at the door; Do you let Him into your life?
God is everywhere present and fills all things; the uncontainable, uncircumscribable, immaterial(excepting the human nature of Jesus), all-merciful, all-loving, all-powerful God, Who, in this moment, holds you in existence despite your unbelief in Him.
      Your whole life He's been angling for your attention; He's hidden in His Commandments, and I'm sure you know some of them by heart: Do not steal, do not murder, honor your mother and father... Love your God with all your strength and all your mind and all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself;
There are times that you've done good and you've known it. There are times that you've done evil, and you know that it was wrong. Your conscience, the voice of God inside you, which cries out when everything inside and outside is silent...
It is why you drown yourself in noise, in pleasures, in company, in sleep; Anything to push away the silence and the thought of your death, like the yawning void it represents in your future existence...

If you’re Catholic, these Bible truths are shared out of love for you, because you may not know what God has declared to you in His Holy Word.
Read through the list and see what the Bible reveals about the leaders of the Catholic Church.

The Bible foretold that the church of the antichrist would be are arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with precious stones.
“The woman (apostate church) was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication.” Revelation 17:4

The Bible foretold that the Harlot (false Church) would assert power over ALL of the Earth.
“Then he said to me, ‘The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues.’ ” Revelation 17:15

I wont claim that Rome always is correct but just as Satan inflitrated the RC with peodophile prelots I think he also inflitrated the EO with bitterness and lack of desire to reunite. If our churches could come back think of how strong we could be to muater against new atheism or the attack of Islam. So by papal authority I mean the power the pope has to act as the head of the church and make disputing bishops sit down and talk it out with councils. Like a parent making two fighting children ait down amd make up after a fight. The unleavened bread is purely about the Passover in Exodus 12, with the unleavened bread and unblemished lamb consumed to make the journey to the Promised Land. The Passover is symbolic of our spiritual journey (hopefully) to Home, called Heaven. Christ, our Lord and Master, spoke of this in John 6:31-33. Manna was unleavened. Symbolism is important to our Lord. It is a mirror image of the Truth Eternal, or what is TRULY Sacred and Holy. That which is symbolic of Eternal makes it holy and sacred on earth, a reflection of IT. Human marriage is sacred and holy BECAUSE its mirrors [reflects] the Eternal, the Marriage of the Bridegroom, Christ, to the Bride, the Church. Christ is the Bridegroom of your soul, your true Eternal Lover. The Church is perfectly One in Heaven by this very possession of our souls. But only through the Immaculate One, called Mother. Mother speaks of an Eternal, if only in Christ. The Incarnation of the Word took place FIRST in Her Heart and Soul, Virgin EVER!

It is interesting that the Devil character is entirely absent from the bible and is a post biblical invention, using ideas borrowed from Hellenism and then applied in error to misunderstood passages.
Satan simply means opposer or adversary and is a role or function, not a name. We might think of it as a 'devil's advocate' whose job is to be a contending voice in debate.
Lucifer is even more fascinating. It comes from two incorrect translations laid atop of each other.
Firstly, a translation of a Hebrew phrase in Isaiah, “shining one, son of the dawn” which was a sarcastic reference to a Babylonian king with delusions of grandeur.
It was translated into Greek by the Septuagint as Theophorous which was another name for the planet Venus, also known as the morning star.
Later, in his translation to Latin, Jerome used the word Lucifer, which was the planet’s other name.
From all that we get the idea of Satan as person and Lucifer as Satan, and the post biblical development of the Devil came to be associated with the word Satan and the name Lucifer but all of it is the invention of men, after the bible was written, and is merely folklore.
So, your funny comment just shows how men can create their own demons and then convince themselves they are real and that is why only Christians are possessed. It’s in their minds.
      Have a good one.

I'm not so sure both need to be cleansed or corrected first. I think the most important thing is that both churches accept who the actual head of the church needs to be. Hint hint, it's not the Pope. And it's not the Patriarchy either. (It's Jesus.) It's a shame the schism has lasted so long, given that this has come up before. See Luke 22:24 etc. Point is, fighting over who will be the greatest is the wrong fight. And really, fighting over who will be the greatest is the primary factor in the divisions that have happened in the church.
More or less, the Protestant Reformation was the result of people realizing just how much the Catholic Church had been corrupted. They had invented theology, kept the people ignorant of their special relationship with Christ, weakened Christ's power over death, and muddied the Gospel with idol worship. At the time, much of the Catholic Church agreed with the reformation. They were ousted from the church prior to the Catholic Reformation, which cemented the view to be the polar opposite of the reformation. It's all just power grabs.
The thing is, most of theology is pointless to squabble over. Will Christ come pre or post tribulation? Should we remember notable historical figures or not? What should be the place of tradition in the church? These are important, but they are not worth the division that exists within the church. The only thing of importance within Christianity is Romans 10:9. "If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." That establishes who is the lord of the church, and from that there's not much room for infighting.
I question whether or not the Catholic Church has strayed too far from accepting Romans 10:9. The Pope is not the head of the Church. The Pope does not save from sin. And neither can any Saint or other Christian. And, you can not save yourself from sin through works. Nor are works required to save. (Nor do they aid in salvation.) So long as the Catholic Church dethrones God for a man with a shiny hat and denies the saving power of Christ, how am I supposed to justify calling them Christians? They are no different from pagans. They worship a fancy pantheon of human men and believe that their own deeds are meritorious enough to grant them access to heaven. But I somehow doubt that all Catholics truly believe the theology of the Pope. Romans 10:9 isn't that well hidden, nor is it the only passage that conveys the same meaning (both testaments scream the same thing on repeat... it can get a little annoying, even). It's just a very concise version of it.
If the Catholic Church ever decides to accept Romans 10:9, then there really isn't any reason all of the churches can't finally reunite under one banner, which is Christ. If all report to Jesus alone, why are we calling ourselves different names when in so doing we hinder others from finding Christ? Christ's mission is to spread the Gospel and make Disciples not to convolute the Gospel and scare people away with complex history lessons in minutia nobody cares to sit through just to learn that none of it really matters. Yeah, your history lessons are fun for the history nerds, but most people are not history nerds. Myself excluded, apparently.

The very secret they keep from people is that they are divine in their own right and like Christ in the flesh. They built a church of stone and Christ god built a temple in us. The 7th Ecumenical Council, held in Constantinople, condemned iconoclasm as a heresy and reestablished icons in worship. This is a commonly venerated council between Orthodox and Catholics.

I'm very familiar with this history. It seemed the last time the Eastern Roman army did anything for the Bishop of Rome was coming to the Italian peninsula to oust the Ostrogoths. When they got there, the Ostrogoths mysteriously disappeared never to be heard from again. The Byzantine army went back to Constantinople and then the Pope and his Catholics faced another threat - the Lombards. That was when they called upon the Franks for assistance and the Franks eventually became the militant guardians of the Roman Church and of course, this led to the formation of the Holy Roman Empire with a Frankish king as its emperor. This is why the conversion of the Franks was so vital to the survival of the Roman Catholic faith.

The pope often exercised authority outside of his own jurisdiction but the scope can occurrence can vary based on the time period and political factors that are involved.

Thank you so much for this concise, balanced and illuminating history of the 'Great Schism'. I always felt that it was more about authority rather than theology as so many divisions in the various churches typically are. When I was studying Theology at university I was required to argue the separation only through the lens of Theology rather than History. I found the study empty as I was looking at the issue with one eye covered. Thank you for allowing me to see the issue with far more clarity. It would be good to hear your thoughts on the 'Historicity of Jesus'.

Sure this video is for historical purposes but I remind people the words of Paul:
"I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose. For some members of Chloe’s household have told me about your quarrels, my dear brothers and sisters. Some of you are saying, “I am a follower of Paul.” Others are saying, “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Peter” or “I follow only Christ.”
Has Christ been divided into factions? Was I, Paul, crucified for you? Were any of you baptized in the name of Paul? Of course not! I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, for now no one can say they were baptized in my name. Oh yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas, but I don’t remember baptizing anyone else. For Christ didn’t send me to baptize, but to preach the Good News-and not with clever speech, for fear that the cross of Christ would lose its power." 1 Corinthians 1:10-17
"Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong. For instance, one person believes it’s all right to eat anything. But another believer with a sensitive conscience will eat only vegetables. Those who feel free to eat anything must not look down on those who don’t. And those who don’t eat certain foods must not condemn those who do, for God has accepted them. Who are you to condemn someone else’s servants? Their own master will judge whether they stand or fall. And with the Lord’s help, they will stand and receive his approval." Romans 14:1-4

It is tragic that Our Lord Jesus echoed the words of Isaias repeating the warnings about men setting aside the Commandments of God for the teachings of men: "Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men" (Isaiah 29:13) "This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me but in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." @@leonardopavese4551 I mean, does the spirit beget the son? Like the Scriptures to say that the Spirit came over the Virgin and she conceived of the Son. The issue of the filioque are that if you assume the logic of the father and the son being one (which no one denies) which means that they both spirate the spirit eternally (which florence and lyons teach btw) how then is the spirit not subordinate? Unless you say the spirit also begets the son (see my argument above for that). At which point, you're really just missing the point that the spirit is spirated from the father alone, from eternity, and the Son is begotten from the Father alone eternally. The balance of the Trinity is maintained. Furthermore, the council of ephesus clearly condemns any changes to the Creed! it anathametizes those who change the creed. So even if the theology is worked out through some mental gymnastics, you still have to face the music that it is flat out wrong to change the creed as a single person or patriarchate

I believe every denomination has their strengths and weaknesses, when we unite we are capable of doing the impossible by HIS power. We, being many (denominations), are one body in CHRIST...(Romans 12:3-8)
I am keen to reach out to those who are deceived by the belief that JESUS CHRIST is not GOD or those who question THE HOLY TRINITY concept, or those who believe there is no hell. Those people really need help, they are lost and there are many...

Thunder Thumbz a “diet” is something to live by to keep your body in shape by filtering bad so you only take in only the good. I said spiritual diet... and how we live here on earth is absolutely going to be discussed when we kneel and our tongues confess and betray us.
Loving God is common through all denominations, but cleansing our sins and forgiving everyone is very important. If your denomination believes that there is nothing left to do after being born again... you may want to rethink it. Jesus lead by example... and he trained the Apostles who were the first Bishops that wrote most of the scripture. Jesus gave the keys to the kingdom to the Bishops... to bind or loosen sin in heaven. So if your denomination eliminated Bishops... you may want to rethink your spiritual diet.
Choosing this spiritual diet is the most important thing that you can do, so make sure you chose one that is similar to the original diet of the Apostles and that would be liturgical.

You forgot to mention the difference between the Eastern Orthodox view of the Trinity. The East follows the model of the Cappadocian fathers whereas the West follows the Augustinian model. Also, the reason why the Eastern churches use leavened bread as opposed to unleavened is that they believe the last supper to have occurred on the Thursday night and not the Friday (bearing in mind the calculation of a day as beginning with what we would consider to be the previous evening). On whichever day the last supper took place, Christ was not in the tomb for 3 days and 3 nights if he rose on the Sunday morning. I'm surprised no-one has ever highlighted that point.

I who don't live in the cities didn't know they existed until I learned about Vladimir Putin who is offically a part of the Russian orthodox church. @@nicodemuseam I’ve studied Catholicism pretty hard for a few years, but as we know, EO is WAY harder to “study” from the outside. One cannot consider that church’s theology without +actually going+, and no two churches are really the same. This is sorta what Protestantism is like now, since they’ve largely discarded the Bible as the supreme authority. That said, the “bath water” is energiea(s) and elevating Mary and the deceased-of-this-world saints to creation that is elevated to omniscience and omnipresence. We are never promised little-g godhood. Rather, we are promised no tears and suffering and being with Christ when we pass from this life. We are promised *in this life* that *Jesus, the Christ* intercedes for us. I don’t need to ask non-omniscient and non-omnipresent beings, for anything in prayer. To me, that’s bathwater with no baby, as the Christ offered there is a weak Godhead to require the intervention of created beings. That said, I do understand the experience, smells, bells and rituals are great.

I am sad to say that "historians" these days have a propensity to put the spotlight on themselves and how amazingly righteous they are by implementing their current, modern understandings and ideals upon the characters and life-examples that history has to offer. Give us the facts and let us determine our own understanding. Great job Mr. Reeves.

In 1054, Pope Leo IX sent a letter to the Patriarch, citing a large portion of the Donation of Constantine believing it genuine.[3]
"The first pope who used it [the Donation] in an official act and relied upon it, was Leo IX; in a letter of 1054 to Michael Cærularius, Patriarch of Constantinople, he cites the "Donatio" to show that the Holy See possessed both an earthly and a heavenly imperium, the royal priesthood."
Some scholars say that this letter of September 1053, the text of which is available in Migne, Patrologia Latina, vol. 143, coll. 744-769, was never actually despatched, but was set aside, and that the papal reply actually sent was the softer but still harsh letter Scripta tuae of January 1054.[4]
Leo IX assured the Patriarch that the donation was completely genuine, not a fable or old wives' tale,[citation needed] arguing that only the apostolic successor to Peter possessed primacy in the Church.
