  • In this video I have a look at a customers 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage with 1200cc's of thunder! He has been battling this EVAP code for a long time now but none of the crappy aftermarket parts have stuck so he's throwing in the towel.

*FOLLOW UP-* The fella did call me about a week later after running a drive cycle and said now that EVAP system works it did flag a code for a small leak. Not sure if he fixed it himself at that point or what but he did not come back to me to see the job through. He did mention when he was working on it initially that he had a few mishaps underneath with some hoses or something like that. Any how just thought you guys should know.

I tell you something. When you put your foot down and release all those horses you are pushed back into the seat. I kept pushing the floor so hard it did push me back and sure enough I slowly got up to speed, just in enough time to have to break. Certainly a city car but I live in the country and went back to my Grand Cherokee, parking the Mirage for a couple months till I sold it to my niece as a first car. The CVT really hurts it.

    • @xrisdavid785
      @xrisdavid785 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

" I need some coaching on these computer systems" ...... Well, for sure ya need diagrams.....either parts or wiring.....because cars are just rolling computers where various sensors tell the "brains" [ECM] to switch active parts ON or OFF. It's all this fancy stuff we're payin' for when ya buy a new car.
Take for instance the windshield wipers. Ol' skool was having a 3 position switch [off-slow-fast] connected directly to the wiper motor. New sh1t has a clickable rheostat that feeds the ECM which sends 12v to the wiper motor in various duty cycles....so ya might have 5 different speeds to set & the ECM sends the 12v to the motor in increments of time [duty cycle]....basically a square wave that changes "length" as view on a scan tool oscilloscope....which a good one can run ya $400 up to $2000. Hey !!! .all these "improvements" are somebody's cash cow....don't ya know

I had a 1991 and it was fixed by that time. My '15 Mirage is still going strong, being driven by my niece. Only things I've had to replace over the years has been a gearbox & shocks in my 1983 Sigma, breaks & tires, exhaust, a cat in the '99 Verada, few batteries, belts, coolant hoses. Did have to fix rust in the Sigma, but all others had no rust. All were garaged except for the Sigma, a 1994 Magna, 1998 Express van.

These cars are pretty popular in my area and to their credit, even with a CVT, power train failures are pretty low, sometimes you get one with high mileage and the engine is a little noisy, but I've seen it a couple times that it's just piston slap when the motor is cold in the morning, maybe Mitsubishi missed the mark a little with their NVH, my only dislike for those cars is how fragile they look, they look like you can run over a paperclip and you'll snap the control arm in half or something.

Or too cheaply built.

When I was young whatever I could afford was the part(s) I installed, (my own car, no others). As I became more successful I was able to purchase better quality parts. I have found over the years that there is a direct correlation to how many times you have to do the job to the price of the part.

Funny… I had an evap code a few months ago and replaced the canister vent valve with a cheapo Amazon part. The fix lasted a month before I got the code again. Just before watching this video I ordered another valve from Amazon - but this time I made sure it was a genuine Denso :)

Nice straightforward diagnosis of the EVAP system. They really aren't that complicated on non-turbo vehicles, but that one uses ORVR so it's a little spicier. Something I rarely work on since my county doesn't have emissions testing. But when I do it's usually the purge valve stuck open, making the engine rich and hard to start after a quick stop.

Hilarious! SMA posts a video about a Mitsu with evap issues, and I'm over here dealing with a bad control wire to the vent solenoid on my Eclipse 😂. Thankfully I'm not out of inspection as like in this video, so I was waiting for warmer weather to start tracing the wire and find the fault..

Your friend at Pine Hollow had the same complaint recently with the new coils someone put into a Subaru he was diagnosing that wouldn't run when the alternator was connected. Found out the coils were just junk aftermarket and wouldn't work right when the voltage was above 12 volts which is always the case when the alternator is charging the battery. Of course, once OEM coils were put in, all was right again.

That was an interesting case study... 2 & 1/2 videos on the fake ignition coils 😮
(The last was the OEM radio/HVAC control module assembly causing the parasitic draw)

I've bought a couple of surplus non-fitting OEM oxygen sensors and treated them as universal parts by changing the plugs. They were approximately half the price of an OEM sensor with the correct plug. They were durable and effective. I leave the generic ones where they belong.

Couldnt agree more with you about Amazon parts. I've recently been guilty of doing just that for a faulty ABS sensor and both were faulty out of the box. Sent me on a wild goose chase but proper testing confirmed they were faulty and a quality oem part sorted the issue

E! Your timing never fails. The money light popped on the Mrs. Corolla last week. Same code!
It's been a minute since I've worked on an EVAP system (they don't break often on Toyo's)😉
Thanks for the refresh on how these operate. You know these models are kissing cousins.
Hopefully all of your regular viewers know better than to buy Chinese junk online. You know they sell us DOA parts on purpose!
Rock Auto is the only place I'll use online. The few times I've had issues with their parts - customer service sent out a replacement before getting the return back. Sometimes you can save on OEM parts from dealers by using their online parts department. But stay away from 'authentic' OEM parts on EGAY!

Hey Eric! Just a suggestion, you should put banana jack leads on your load testing test lites, then you can use your AES wave terminal leads...no more "gingerly front probing". I've been doing it for years and I'd highly recommend it. Cheers!

I've been bit by Chinese parts. Had a dual tank Ford pickup with in tank fuel pumps. One quit so I pulled the tank and swapped the fuel pump and hanger assembly. Return check valve was non existent or stuck open though so that tank would overfill when using the other tank. New pump hanger under warranty, pulled the bed that time as it's easier than pulling a full tank. Same thing. Luckily I left the bed off. Returned second Chinese hanger and bought a $400 OEM one. No issues. My guess is the Chinese one was reverse engineered from a Bronco one (single tank) so it didn't have a check valve.

Great lesson Eric! When I was a Chrysler tech for years, I always, and still do, preach about using quality OEM if possible, parts. I not just trying to sell MOPAR stuff as OEM is the best quality 90% of the time. This does not mean name brand High Performance parts are bad, though as some are better made than OEM because OEM was designed for the average everyday driver.

I agree with the online vendors quality. I also chuckled at the filing cabinet covered in Rock Auto magnets (one per order) It really does depend on what you're buying. Rock Auto is about the only online vendor I will buy from..again..being smart about the brand names they offer is key.

And at the opposite end of the Chunesium fake parts spectrum is the neighborhood "chain garage" that just tried to charge a buddy of mine $800 for four stinking ignition coils. I told him about fakes, ripoff shops, and pointed him to a source for OEM coils and told him I'd put them in for him. So frustrating.

local parts retailers sell the same garbage they sell on Amazon and Ebay, I often have to hit the forums to find the places that sell parts that were made by the same companies that made the OEM parts for my old Jeep and these places often have an Ebay store. Obviously a $15 oxygen sensor is gonna be a wast of time, but I have had more problems with parts purchased from local retailers than online.
