Ford Fusion - ECM Coil Drivers Up In Smoke

  • In this video I have a look at a customers Ford Fusion with the big 3.0 that will not run. The car was already looked at by the owner and he thinks it needs an ECM and we just have to make sure that is the case. It has a strange failure that side tracks me for a moment but we get it figured out in the end.
    -Enjoy!

*PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT* - If you are watching this video on 4/7/24 or 4/8/24 and you don't fall asleep before the end screen and you see part II is listed as "Members Only." *DO NOT PANIC* Do not send me nasty emails, don't unsubscribe, don't tell me I am an asshole or a sellout in the comments and *DO NOT CALL MY SHOP* to tell me you can't watch it. The part II will be posted on the 9th at 6am just like *I ALWAYS DO.* The reason it says members only is because there are some folks that support our TH-cam channel by becoming a "TH-cam Member" and it gives them early access to all videos I put out. 4 years of college, graduating as a master ASE cert mechanic. The Instructors regularly play your videos in their presentations for all the students. I, now happily have my own mobile auto repair business, and continue to watch all of your videos in my free time. My favorites are the electrical diagnostics. Amazing how much you know, how well you explain, and how great your videos are. Your nickname at my college is “South Main Wizard”. LOL. Anyway, everyone loves what you do, keep it up! We appreciate it.

Mr O. It has been my privilege to employ and work beside some incredible technicians over 40 years. The ones who were the best ALWAYS suspected themselves when fault finding, consistently checking input/outputs etc. and being totally transparent when explaining themselves. Just like you, so don't be too hard on yourself as you have completed a first rate investigation. You also smiled the whole time.

The best reason to watch an SMA video is the last spoken sentence, "Remember viewers, if I can do it, you can do it." This always comes right after we have watched a Grand Master Mechanic perform an act of Super Genius. Hearing this feels to me, like watching the interviews after an NBA Championship game, and Seth Curry says, "Remember viewers, if I can do it, you can do it." Yeah. Right. This SMA video, like many SMA videos, features a car that has been worked on by another professional mechanic, who, finding themselves stumped, sends the car to Eric O, while saying, "Remember viewers, if I can't do it, send it to Eric O."

There is a TSB from ford on the 3.0 engines in the Escapes, Fusions, Mariner, and Mazda Tribute, for the coils failing and knocking out the coil driver for that bank in the PCM, and the TSB states to replace all 6 coils, spark plugs, and the PCM.

    Good catch Eric!
Something similar happens to NA Miata's. I bought mine as a repo from a bank. Their customer told them it had a blown head gasket and they could take it. First thing I did was check no water in coolant and no coolant in the water. Next I traced it back to one fuel injector that was always on (dumping unburnt fuel into the cat and making large clouds of white smoke which caused former owner to think it was a blown head gasket). Turns out that the capacitors in the old ECM's are known to fail and burst. When they burst, they leak conductive or corrosive chemicals down the board and cause odd behavior depending on where they leaked. I was lucky (my car is a one year only California Emissions NA 1.6 version) and found a used ECM on Ebay. I also had my electrical engineer cousin look at the old ECM. He ended up replacing the blown capacitors and cleaning the traces in the damaged area. Now I have two working ECM's.

An indicator that the coil driver circuit parts inside PCM are probably replaceable is the fact that Ford has the PCMs in stock. Since you know that Ford is NOT manufacturing new 2008 parts of any kind, Ford must be opening up core-return PCMs, replacing the Coil Driver parts, sealing it back up and reselling it. What that means is you can probably get your PCM repair guy to do the same fix at a fraction of OEM replacement cost. I don't remember the name of the tech company that Eric O uses for PCM repairs. Anyone else remember?

Superb, Mr. Obrochta. It would only have been a booboo if the wires were indeed shorted and you had replaced the computer...that would been the end of your spirit life. One will have gone to the woods in his mind and begun to sing the death song, lest he bravely forge ahead with the 'why' question...a nightmare scenario for a guy like me. The lesson to learn here is to attempt to isolate why the ECM failed...including proving that the wiring harness is intact so did not short it's drivers...hmmm, attempting to discover why a module fails before replacing it means looking for any shorts that could have done it in. Now where have we heard that? Call me knocklehead.

There is a saying but I don’t remember it exactly, lol. I’ve not seen this issue with Fords PCM coil drivers staying open but I have seen the injector drivers being open on Fords that causes flooded engines and some cases hydro-lock. I am guessing the driver is probably an IC package, if it saw over current it usually takes out the package and the chip many time shorts to VCC or 12 volts. I worked on a couple of GM ECM's back in the day for the "quad driver" failure and it was a 4 section device. My friend took out 3 new ECM's before I helped him find a shorted EVAP solenoid. The IC had a hole blown in the front of it. I think on newer coil package designs the ECM doesn't handle current on the switch side of the coil, the ECM sends a low level signal to a power FET in the coil thus protecting the ECM from this type of failure.

Just had one of these towed in. Turned the key on to scan for codes and two of the coils popped just sitting there. I was super excited since I had just watched this video and could now play along at home :)

"I don't know how I've never made this connection" (28:29) I had to laugh (you didn't the PCM did). I like how concerned you are that your original approach may have lead you astray, shows you are always honing your skills.

I’ve crystallized my knowledge more and more watching our dear sir Mr. Eric O. Yet I find I’m helping A LOT of co workers. I work at a restaurant and after work I’m in the parking lot looking at multiple cars. All “favors”. No $. It’s getting to me, quite quick, but I like to help people. I think. Lol But ya know.

I like to play a game when I watch an SMA video. Its called " What is Josh doing?" Only to know what's going on in the other bay, Lol. Thanks for sharing, Eric. Have learned so much from the " If i can do it, you can do it!", mentality.

It's good to remember - you got this car second hand. The mystery could have been induced. Great troubleshooting. Looking forward to Part 2. Thanks
