    Norwegian style knitting makes everything better from ribbing, stockinette stitch, colourwork to brioche. If that is not your preferred method it really is worth giving it a go and continue to practice until it is! Also no wrapping yarn around fingers to tension. Simply hold it against the needle and it is tensioned all that it needs to be without changing the spin of the yarn. So many things I have learned from you about actually making stitches that become beautiful fabric. I enjoy my knitting so much more now.

      Oh! Oh! Oh! I couldn't see that Arne was holding the yarn against the needle. I thought, well, I don't know what I thought. Gotta try it. Thank you!

    I never thought I would be able to knit in the norwegian style. With practice it has become surprisingly natural and smoot.. Whenever I try to "throw" now, it will feel rather "jerky". Thank you Arne!

    I don’t get the ladders anymore since I have learned Norwegian...thanks to Arne! The knit stitch was easy, but I had to think about doing a purl. Now it feels natural to knit this way..I was a thrower...so it was a bit of a change. Guys have a good evening.

    I learned to knit continental style, wrapping the yarn loosely around the slightly lifted left index finger and sort if weaving it through the rest of the fingers. Tension is controlled by the fingers of the left hand working together. Whilst I barely ever had ladders even when knitting on three needles, it is quite unnerving when knitting with more than one colour. After seeing you knit your way a while ago, Arne, I started doing colourwork the Norwegian way. It speeds up the work immediately and I love to see the patterns develop (rather than being unnerved by the constant need to unwrap - wrap - unwrap....) So, many thanks! It is always a pleasure to learn from somebody so friendly and relaxed.

    Arne, I’m so very proud of You! Your tutorial was clear and concise and Your English is getting much more on point.
    When knitting continental/Norwegian, there is no room for ladders because as You mentioned the Yarn is pulled closely so there are no ladders.
    I love You both! And I love those dpns what brand are they? They are super cool 😎
    Have a wonderful day/evening, and in all things be and stay Blessed 💙🦋

    If you're throwing the yarn, you need to hold the yarn so you can regulate the tension, then you knit the first two stitches quite firmly on each needle. It works very well once you get used to it.

    • @thingsretiredpeopledo3060
      @thingsretiredpeopledo3060 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thank you Beatrix, I knit English Cottage style and the first two stitches of each needle must be knit firmly. As you say, you get used to it and don't even notice you're doing it. I love Arne but he's basically saying, "Knit the Norwegian way and you won't have this problem!" lol

    • @virgorising7388
      @virgorising7388 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm a natural English/American knitter but it doesn't stop me from trying Continental. I just don't have the same coordination with my left hand. I notice that I never have to try hard to get the gauge on Kim Hargreaves patterns so I don't feel any need to change. :-)

    • @Giantkiller130-t
      @Giantkiller130-t 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I've learned to tighten the first two stiches on each needle and that's helped me avoid ladders. I didn't even realize this is what I had been doing until I saw your comment, and I was like oh well wow I actually already do this!

I've watched lots of videos, but have never seen anyone purl like you...and now me too! 😊 Thank you!

    I am delighted to find your channel. My mother taught me to knit English Flicking method before I knew it had a name. No one else around us knit, so who knew. But I migrated to Continental then I started knitting Combined, then I discovered how to make a purl without using Combined purl which had better tension and did not get loose. Turns out I knit just like you do. This is the part which I find interesting -- my father was first generation in the USA, born of two parents, both 100% Norwegian! How's that for one of life's coincidences.
    I've begun knitting socks of late as my husband and I retired this year and I've always knit everything for everyone else and rarely for myself. My feet are like ice cubes when I retire. Wanted good woolen socks but can't find them in Southern California where we live. If it wasn't that my feet got cold like my mother, I would not have found your channel. Good grief, hardly think I'd have survived a winter if I lived in Norway with no ability to keep warm feet!
    Anyway, love your channel -- ooh so many videos. Love it. And I sit and look and compare to my dad and his brothers as to what they looked like and how you look and I can see how Norwegian I also look. I have always looked more like my dad than my mother.
    Funny in the USA blondes are stereotyped as being "stupid", but I've said, that if you can survive where winters are so long, you can't be stupid. All that takes planning and dedication to doing it right or none of our ancestors would have left offspring.
    Any way, delighted to have found your channel and thank you for being so gracious as to share your wonderful skills and techniques. Sally

    Switched to continental knitting because "throwing" seemed a wasted movement. Boy, has my stitching speed rocketed since switching. I too "pick" the yarn from my finger, as it seems more intuitive. My remaining fingers fold over the yarn to maintain the tension. Love your work, and because knitting socks makes me forget the basics, I run your simple sock video each time I make a heel!

    Thanks, Arne. I knit English style. I just make sure the transition stitch is nice and snug and that works most of the tie. If the pattern is suitable (not likely to mess up my stitch count) every few rows I shift an additional stitch onto the working needle so the transition stitches aren't always the same throughout the project.

    Thank you Arne. I tend to get ladders when I alternate knit purl knit like for ribbing or in seed stitch or basket weave pattern. I knit continental and keep the stitches tight but still end up with them periodically. Can you help me?

    What kind of needles are you using?! Because I love them! They look really well made! And I’ve been wanting to try out dpns again, just wondering the brand for future reference???

      Hi Rayce, I managed to spot the brand name in one of the close up shots.They are from the brand called Addi, 9mm thick and 20cm long. At 5:01 there is an upside down shot 😉.

    Thanks to your tutorials I can knit the Norwegian way for a while now. But with the purling I've still got some trouble. I can do it, but when I come to the knitting, the stitches are not the same. The stitch has turned. The first part of the stitch is at the back of the needle and the second part is at the front (hard to explain, but I hope you understand). so, I knit the purl the way I learned it at school in Flanders and the knitting I do the Norwegian way. But the purling is not so easy on short needles or on the circular needles. We learned to stick a needle under our right arm, to keep it steady, but with the short needles you can't do that and you always have the needle to let go, and this is slowing everything down. I hope you can understand my explanation. So, I'd like to know how I can avoid the twisting of the purlstitches, so I can knit them the Norwegian way too. It really goes faster and it's less tiring. Your hand doesn't have to do such big movements. I just love your tutorials, I learned a lot of you. And I'm knitting for over 50 years now. So you're never too old to learn something. Thanks :)

    I am a thrower. I pulled my last stitch tight and have no ladders. But when knitting the Christmas balls it is in the top decrease section that the ladders appear 😳 I wonder if I should use smaller needles to close the gap 🤔

    I get ladders if I knit with 4 dpns (triangular) but not with 5 dpns (square). Will try this method next time I feel I have to use 4.

    The last time I watched one of your videos about tension, I tried the Norwegian style, but the yarn wouldn't stay around my finger. Any tips besides "keep trying"?

    • @paulagrnsy
      @paulagrnsy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found an answer below, I think. You hold the yarn against the needle!

    I only get ladders when I do knit one purl one ribbing. The only way I have ever avoided it was to knit several stitches past the end of each needle so the place the ladder would be keeps moving. Is there a better way?

      @n.ayisha 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i do that too. that way, even if there is a tiny ladder at the end of each needle, they don't stack up in one column, so it never shows.

      I knit continental-style and my left index finger in the air:
      at the first 3 stitches I pay attention to the tension. When I knit a cuff... 2k / 2p as an example, a needle ends with a purl and starts with a knit.

    Since switching to Norwegian knitting I've stopped getting ladders between the stitches when knitting DPNs, but the first stitch on the needles is wide and looks like a ladder, I've tried increasing my tension and decreasing it and I can't seem to avoid a loose/wide first stitch of each row. What could I be doing wrong?

    • @ARNECARLOS
      @ARNECARLOS  ปีที่แล้ว

      You should tighten it, you can also slip the first stitch

    • @user-hf9sj2jv1w
      @user-hf9sj2jv1w ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ARNECARLOS when should I tighten it, because I try to tighten it as I knit into the next stitch but it still ends up loose, even though it seems like I'm pulling really tight (also thanks for replying, I can't believe you take the time to reply to comments on videos even from four years ago!)

    Norwegian is great for avoiding ladders, but how do you keep it from bunching up at the corners when working with two colors? That's the problem I keep having.

      You need help on slowing the video? Right under the screen you will see a little wheel... you click on it and one of the options it gives you is speed... you choose... click and see what is best for you... to slow it down I thnk you`d have to click on 0,75 or even slower, 0,50.Right now it reads "normal". Hope you understand Gigi, but don´t hesitate to ask if you don´t.
