Usually doesn't damage anything but random display drop-outs and interference in the middle of benchmarks isn't a fun time. Once again, not really an AMD issue. Not defending them, they frustrate me like everyone else but I wish he'd stop jumping conclusions about AMD cards when the problem isn't specific to them.
So even if that goop was put on by the manufacturer, why do you blame AMD for it?....AMD didn't make that card, Asus did. As mentioned, that's probably an LN2 card and that goop is probably liquid tape, and in that case no wonder that card is a mess. BTW I have a CNC mill, I hit you up about a 1080ti repair, I actually have a couple more likely broken 1080ti's on the way.......maybe we can work something out.

I never saw that kind of goop on any GPU cards exept wierd experimentation by users like LN2, oil tanks, etc... When you apply rubbing alcohol, the adhesive residue will lose its adhesion and will precipitate. This can also work with acetone, or nail polish remover. Keep in mind that alcohol or acetone may damage painted surfaces, so be careful when using these substances.@@northwestrepair

My amd experience has been so good on rdna 2 with my rx 6800, max of 75c on the hot spot with a mild fan profile in a good airflow case playing star field, my vram never hits over 60c everything running super good. I used to run nvidia gpus my last one being a rtx 3080 I was gifted but at the time I had a rx 6800xt I could not believe how much better the 6800xt looked in games it was a breakthrough moment for me nvidia cards look bland to me and blurry. I knew right then and there amd from now on not only looking better pulling less power and having more vram but not costing 20-40 % more money for features I do not care for.
I agree although I use an ASRock 6700xt 12 gb version witn two fans I did however change the thermal paste on the chip it self since hot spot was hitting 105 when avarege was 65 and I do mean every single temp sensor was showing that under load and in re4 remake so now I'm from 75-80 degrees on the die hotspot it self which is 5 degrees difference under load which is the same as in idle
Everybody is entitled to their opinions. When working as a RV solar tech, I saw the way most manufacturers made their coaches and it would confirm to me not to buy that brand or brands. When your working on the guts of something and you know your stuff. The bad things stick out like a sore thumb. But in this case, that board was most definitely plastic dipped. Can't blame AMD for that one. Personally, I'm on my 3rd AMD card and they have all been very good. Were they built great? No, heck my second XFX card was bent from one end to the other cooler and all. Still worked great but was wonky. My latest Asrock 6800xt is much better built, but it is one of their higher end cards. It's really hard to judge AMD for what third party vendors make.
*TIP* Get yo self a set of hot tweezers and when you need to remove a Chips Solder array from the PCB's Cut a short piece of solder wick and clamp it with yo HOT tweezers and use the wick as if it were a brush to soak and clean the Chip &OR PCB solder array/s with barely any "if not any damage" to the PCB/Chips Solder Mask &OR Conformal Coating/s.
I know the red substance is cement/glue to temporary hold components in place as the board makes its way through the reflow oven. Perhaps the black substance is a conformal coating sprayed over the board after it cools down? Maybe it oxides when heat is applied in the presents of oxygen? It has to be from assembly process, crap is all over the place sometimes, its like they preheated the crap out of them during assembly and baked the crap on or something.

only one . my first one bought in 2021 for $1102usd on ebay . but sapphire replaced it under RMA and got a Sapphire Nitro+ RX 6800XT 16GB for replacement .. hehe and still got teh old gpu back (by accident lol) so i said *screw it ... i replaced all GDDR6 and walla. works fine now lol

30:50 thats not right, with an oven you got a nearly closed system which will be much smaller than your room obviously. With an hot air blower the system pretty much is your whole room. So which system will need more energy to heat up by 5 degrees celsius? Right! Your room! So your loosing energy consistently with a blower into the room while an oven is an insulated system. Time is the only thing you are saving here. With an oven you can also avoid some/most of the soldering gas that may be harmful. In the older days the people used soldering tin already mixed with a flux called Rosin or collophony which smells like pine woods and is less harmful than other flux that is used by the industry. This soldering tin was intended for "home-use" and is gone nowadays. I think they found cheaper alternatives that are also harmless.
that my friend is not factory , that GPU was Water cooled or they used liquid nitrogen on it and before using doing that they paint on either Nail polish or Liquid plastic dip so that moisture doesn't get into all the nicks and crannies and cause a short or fry the GPU from moisture !!! they do it with motherboards too when Overclocking and trying too set records and such on benchmark runs !!! ironically if the customer didn't know a GPU miner probably did it then sold him the card ..
Techpowerup posted a review (asus radeon rx 5700 xt strix oc) and there's a clear view of the pcb and there's no red paste on any of the display port and there's no black goop on any of the vrams and caps. Chances are this is not from the factory but from the end user or from the previous repair shop. Quit trying to blame AMD for every single thing, makes you look kinda pathetic.

Yeah I'll never skimp on a good set of tweezers, You can't get the quality from the higher end ones, Don't forget you get what you pay for.. And with cheap tweezers you're going to be dropping chips caps and resistors constantly because of alignment issues and the tweezers not functioning properly..
Asus definitely had some poorly made 5000 series cards, some of the TUF branded models I believe. They released a revision for one or two of those models at one point. I think it was the memory cooling which was considered very inadequate on the original versions. Not sure what's going on with all the crap on this card, doesn't seem likely to be explained only by poor memory cooling.
So you met my mortal enemy, the Underfill. I do microsoldering on mobile devices and ALL of them have underfill under the CPU, if you aren't super carefull and heat up the board a little too much you have to reball the cpu because the balls short out when the underfill expands under heat.
This reminds me of the MRE (meal ready to eat) that we have in the Military. I'm surprised that you can make it indoors, the heater pack produces a high concentration of hydrogen gas and can be dangerous in small areas. love your videos btw.
On the chip with the mask two other ball spots have trailing out of area marks. I have seen them before to no effect but seems a ball joining path if chip is moved up or down not side to side. I mean the tiny movement to return with surface tension back home. Probably not the same with memory compared to ic's. Larger balls?
They are getting tons of RMAs so instead of redesigning and fixing the actual issues, aka board flex, they're trying bonds and underfills to hold components in place long enough to make it through the warranty period. Like NWR said in an earlier video, the best possible thing to do for your product life extension is to mount it vertically.
My whole Gaming PC is a Gigabyte build the only component I removed was the graphics card after having two Gigabyte cards in my build they are pure dirt .
That compound is ATC compound it is desighned to swell under heat amd tear pads off chips and used to deter technicians from fixing their cards in order to sell more cards
i think someone in the assembly line left or been dropped some piece of duct tape or something and that over time due to heat melted and wrapped arround the components inside gpu,or some third party but it looks been there for a looong time
liquid cooling failure residue? very interesting crap to find under electronic parts, i know some smd elements are glued with red glue if you flow solder big pcb on both sides but that stuff is nasty
BTW, Hakko CHP 5B-SA are good fine tip tweezers, not sure if they are small enough for handling balls (lol) but I use them to place 0402 and 0201 components
I think that card was in a fire and the fan holder melted + etc...., and cleaned it up a bit and installed a replacement; The motherboard looks terrible, she needs a good sonic cleanser Maybe you have a headache due to a leak in your solder extraction system, test it with a smoke system dudes
I wouldn't necessarily say its amd cards in general, i would blame the board partners like asus and gigabyte. saphire, powercolor, and even the new xfx models seem like good options. I'll be going with amd once my current gpu dies on me, granted after i send it to you 1st to get it fixed and hopefully get some more milage out of it 😅.
If you are looking for a reflow oven there is an interesting device that helps you convert a kitchen oven to reflow oven. The name of it is Reflow Master Pro. Of course there many arduino or other MC based DIY projects.

funny.... iv never had and AMD card fail but one , a sapphire Radeon RX (AMD Reference) 6800XT 16GB (but during the shortage) and was probably heavily used for Ethereum Mining( 2021)( GDDR6 Died ) replaced all teh ram and GPU worked fine.. hmmmm

Even though I love great hardware, for example I bought Lenovo Legion 7 gaming Notebooks, but they don't look like frikkin Gamer Laptops, they have great design, elegant and not too obnoxious, even with the RGB lights on full rotation a Legion laptop still looks classy. As for the Hardware, I think the best GPUs are Sapphire NITRO+ for AMD, don't know if they also make Nvidia GPUs. The best were EVGA, but they are gone, because NVIDIA sucks and hates their Board Partners do cool stuff, so they limited them so much that it got basically pointless...

I mean, these statements are kind confusing to me that I also endlessly watch repair videos trying to get more knowledge in fault finding methods. I found online, owner of 6900xt finding it on his gpu - asking about it, another owner of 6950xt made by XFX... I think GamersNexus did a teardown of Sapphire 6950xt finding the same "hotglue" being used. Why did they decide to use glue? I really don't know, many are saying to prolong gpu life, but idk about that - LOL there's a broken gpu in your hands. So would it break earlier? 😂 Kinda bad manufacturing solution when it comes to repairing I hope they don't do it any more 🤷♂️ I haven't seen the glue in person so I can't say anything from personal experience, just from what I saw online ...

why not use paste instead of balls? in most of rossmann's videos that i've seen they always use paste to solder ssd nands and ram on the macbooks they fix. just curious if there are any significant differences between balls and paste in regards to GPUs.
It's not AMD, it's Asus. Their quality has degraded over the comming years so far such that JaysTwoCents had to cancel them, and literally ban them from all the future sponsorship he would get from them. It's just how Asus is now.
My guess... someone spilled something on this card. Pulled apart countless GPUs and I've never seen anything like that that couldn't be explained by something having been spilled on it by the user. Neither the black or the red substances are anything I've even seen on a card from the factory. This is on the use end.

And AMD cards are not that bad bc in all repair videos i saw from different channels 95% were nVidia cards. So what i have noticed about AMD cards is they broke less, cost less, using less power and have the old power connector that wont fail.
AMD cards sell way less than Nvidia. Obviously they will go less for warranty. I thought everyone who is into gaming knew that. Steam's PC spec survey shows this clearly..the problem with card in this video isn't about Asus or Amd..prolly the user did extreme LN2 cooling but didn't clean off the liquid LN2 tape or something leading to residue

I didnt pay attention to amd cards so I was kinda out of the loop. I overpaid for basically 8gb of ram. Can you mod a card to 16gb and what would you charge for it ? its guarded in drivers, its posible to do (in theori, and has been done on some youtube channels) but you will get a ton of issues running useable drivers proberly. Also doubtfully worth it with current prices on new cards. Sad to say but you got punished for not understanding supply and demand. Plenty of indicators upto the RTX3k/RX6k launch that it would be cards worth getting on day1.

memory chip shifted at 44:00 because it was never aligned to begin with. Solder was just doing its job and pulled the chip in line 1 row off.

that chip did not shift. it was in the wrong place since the begining
that was not factory. too random and messy. it was from user error. something happened in pc to cause it

Yeah I'll never skimp on a good set of tweezers, You can't get the quality from the higher end ones, Don't forget you get what you pay for.. And with cheap tweezers you're going to be dropping chips caps and resistors constantly because of alignment issues and the tweezers not functioning properly..
If you’re going to buy an AMD card, stick to the AMD exclusive makers. There seems to be more problem with the multi brand makers.

Asus definitely had some poorly made 5000 series cards, some of the TUF branded models I believe. They released a revision for one or two of those models at one point. I think it was the memory cooling which was considered very inadequate on the original versions. Not sure what's going on with all the crap on this card, doesn't seem likely to be explained only by poor memory cooling.
I wonder if that card was water cooled... Could that goop be some dried up water based coolant that leaked all over?

So you met my mortal enemy, the Underfill. I do microsoldering on mobile devices and ALL of them have underfill under the CPU, if you aren't super carefull and heat up the board a little too much you have to reball the cpu because the balls short out when the underfill expands under heat.

On the chip with the mask two other ball spots have trailing out of area marks. I have seen them before to no effect but seems a ball joining path if chip is moved up or down not side to side. I mean the tiny movement to return with surface tension back home. Probably not the same with memory compared to ic's. Larger balls?
They are getting tons of RMAs so instead of redesigning and fixing the actual issues, aka board flex, they're trying bonds and underfills to hold components in place long enough to make it through the warranty period.

That compound is ATC compound it is desighned to swell under heat amd tear pads off chips and used to deter technicians from fixing their cards in order to sell more cards

liquid cooling failure residue? very interesting crap to find under electronic parts, i know some smd elements are glued with red glue if you flow solder big pcb on both sides but that stuff is nasty
BTW, Hakko CHP 5B-SA are good fine tip tweezers, not sure if they are small enough for handling balls (lol) but I use them to place 0402 and 0201 components

I wouldn't necessarily say its amd cards in general, i would blame the board partners like asus and gigabyte. saphire, powercolor, and even the new xfx models seem like good options. I'll be going with amd once my current gpu dies on me, granted after i send it to you 1st to get it fixed and hopefully get some more milage out of it 😅.

If you are looking for a reflow oven there is an interesting device that helps you convert a kitchen oven to reflow oven. The name of it is Reflow Master Pro. Of course there many arduino or other MC based DIY projects.
Man, you should always avoid heating those caps too high. A reflow oven is not something I would use to repair a video card.

funny.... iv never had and AMD card fail but one , a sapphire Radeon RX (AMD Reference) 6800XT 16GB (but during the shortage) and was probably heavily used for Ethereum Mining( 2021)( GDDR6 Died ) replaced all teh ram and GPU worked fine.. hmmmm

Even though I love great hardware, for example I bought Lenovo Legion 7 gaming Notebooks, but they don't look like frikkin Gamer Laptops, they have great design, elegant and not too obnoxious, even with the RGB lights on full rotation a Legion laptop still looks classy.
As for the Hardware, I think the best GPUs are Sapphire NITRO+ for AMD, don't know if they also make Nvidia GPUs. The best were EVGA, but they are gone, because NVIDIA sucks and hates their Board Partners do cool stuff, so they limited them so much that it got basically pointless...

I mean, these statements are kind confusing to me that I also endlessly watch repair videos trying to get more knowledge in fault finding methods. I mean, for me it looks like they do share some knowledge maybe not everything but they do otherwise people who are completely noobs in electronics wouldn't be able to do repairs. Of course the most important is to have the spirit in you, to read about electronics to practice and to learn from your faults.

I've read somewhere online that AMD gpu manufacturers did use glue on memory chips to make them more secure....whatever that means.
I found online, owner of 6900xt finding it on his gpu - asking about it, another owner of 6950xt made by XFX... I think GamersNexus did a teardown of Sapphire 6950xt finding the same "hotglue" being used.
Why did they decide to use glue? I really don't know, many are saying to prolong gpu life, but idk about that - LOL there's a broken gpu in your hands. So would it break earlier? 😂

why not use paste instead of balls? in most of rossmann's videos that i've seen they always use paste to solder ssd nands and ram on the macbooks they fix. just curious if there are any significant differences between balls and paste in regards to GPUs.

It's not AMD, it's Asus. Their quality has degraded over the comming years so far such that JaysTwoCents had to cancel them, and literally ban them from all the future sponsorship he would get from them. It's just how Asus is now.

My guess... someone spilled something on this card. Pulled apart countless GPUs and I've never seen anything like that that couldn't be explained by something having been spilled on it by the user. Neither the black or the red substances are anything I've even seen on a card from the factory. This is on the use end.

Pls stop blaming AMD cards. I mean this kind of hate speech damage your reputation and some of us will not send you cards in for repair. And AMD cards are not that bad bc in all repair videos i saw from different channels 95% were nVidia cards. So what i have noticed about AMD cards is they broke less, cost less, using less power and have the old power connector that wont fail.
AMD cards sell way less than Nvidia. Obviously they will go less for warranty. I thought everyone who is into gaming knew that. Steam's PC spec survey shows this clearly..the problem with card in this video isn't about Asus or Amd..prolly the user did extreme LN2 cooling but didn't clean off the liquid LN2 tape or something leading to residue

I didnt pay attention to amd cards so I was kinda out of the loop. I overpaid for basically 8gb of ram. Can you mod a card to 16gb and what would you charge for it ? its guarded in drivers, its posible to do (in theori, and has been done on some youtube channels) but you will get a ton of issues running useable drivers proberly. Also doubtfully worth it with current prices on new cards. Sad to say but you got punished for not understanding supply and demand. Plenty of indicators upto the RTX3k/RX6k launch that it would be cards worth getting on day1.
At that time AMD cards were highly overpriced too. You wouldn't get an AMD at good price either, unless you lived only in US.
